View Full Version : Getting used to the battle system

That's a Carrion Crawler?
Avenge Eccawen, my fellow warrior! I put up one hell of a fight against it. If it's arms aren't restored, you should only have 3 tentacles to face. The saving throws suck, but severing tentacles was the best part. Almost made being paralyzed worth it. Almost.

The cheers rain down on the lizard men who won the fight. The crowd love them. In fact, they want more -- so two newt-like creatures appear as the next challenge against any would be champions.

Valeria stayed to the back of the party, drawing her bow and flipping her hair to the side. She hoped that maybe, just maybe, she could bring one down, or at least make it easier for the others to take out.

Um.... I actually get to strike before anyone. My technical initiative is -1 due to my DEX and racial bonus
Meinolf
10-20-2011, 05:58 AM
Correct. Anne, you can flourish as much as you want in the details, but let us know what you are doing to cast these spells. For the moment all of your spells have a cast time of 1, I think, but you might want to get into the habit of posting that detail as well. :)
Anne Bonny
10-20-2011, 05:59 AM
Yup, totally forgot that part too. Will do on my next turn I guess, for it to work on the following turn?
Meinolf
10-20-2011, 06:05 AM
Naz: Alright, I am really tired at the moment. Are you saying your total initiative is -1, or that you get a -1 bonus to your initiative? In any case, without knowing your class, I can't tell you if you go before Anne or not, so I will just trust your word on the matter. Have at them newt-men. :)
Anne: I'm sorry, I didn't quite get the question. Are you asking if you need to make two posts to detail the casting of a spell?
Anne Bonny
10-20-2011, 06:06 AM
No no. I mean, my first turn I'll say I'm casting it, and then everyone else goes, and then I do my spell, right?

Torvah, restored somehow from his previous ordeal, looks at the newt men and the arena. Apparently fighting isn't a choice once you enter the ring, you're forced to do it for the enjoyment of the crowd. I wonder if there is anyway out of this hellish place? he thought, but he knew now was not the time for such thinking. Placing the thoughts out of his mind he prepared himself for battle.

(Alright, since this is a battle meant for learning I feel I should mention this. Head-shots add a -4 penalty to your attack rolls.)
Arrows flew past the newt-men, cooling their still wet skin from the breeze of their passing. However, that second knife truly hit harm, sinking in to the hilt inside the left eye of newt-man 1.
Attacking from the left side of the newt-man 1 is now considered the same as attacking from his rear: +2 to your to-hit.

I don't want to get too heavy into a lot of the penalties and bonuses for the ICs. Called shots aren't at a penalty and do no more damage than a regular hit. Plus, I would rather allow for the roleplay aspect as well for how things hit know what I mean. Trying to keep the essence of the game while keeping it all simple. And we do have a few new people to DnD and almost everyone is new to 2E
Shepherd
10-20-2011, 06:35 AM

Nazgul
10-20-2011, 06:42 AM
I get the reasoning behind it, but in the end, as I will post the monsters getting hit, I can decide how successful the attack was. At least for now. Further down the road we may decide we want to amend rules as we get better at doing all this. And, don't want to confound the new people XD Ah, to be a DnD newb again. Those were fun times.
Meinolf
10-20-2011, 06:45 AM
(I have no qualms with it, it is just that with every successful called shot I have been aiding the players all the more -- without them actually knowing the mechanics behind it. For instance, Missy made a successful called shot on the carrion crawler earlier and reduced its number of attack by 2/3. I never once told her about called shots, I just took what she told me and added in my own thoughts on penalties and bonuses. I only mentioned it to Korvis because she kept saying she was going for the head -- I wanted her to know why she was missing when her character has such a high thac0 rating.)
Korvis
10-20-2011, 06:46 AM
thank you :D i thought it was odd that i was missing so often on relatively high numbers, lol.... i just figured if i was throwing something, i should obviously go for the head, lol...

Torvah walked cautiously up to one of the sleeping creatures. It would be a waste to kill it now, it was no longer a threat, but he seemed to have little choice in this arena. Might as well give the crowd what they want, he thought, at least I can make it as quick and painless as possible.
"May you find a peaceful end in the next life," he said as he readied his scythe. Turning it away from him he brought it down into the center of the monster's chest cavity, where its heart would be. Like a miner with a pick axe, the blade cleaved deep into the creature's chest. Its eyes fluttered open and it let out a quick hiss, high and sharp, and then it fell silent forevermore.
(I'm assuming I just get to kill it and don't have to roll?)

The blast of the fireball sends both Eccawen and the Toad flying, flames licking at both of their bodies as they land yards apart.
Eccawen is unconscious, not bleeding to death, but flames are still all over her.
Gilder, it is your turn.
Lord Tully
10-20-2011, 07:06 PM
Ok let's try this.
As the Toad landed on the ground Gilder let loose yet another arrow from his bow, aiming again for the toad's head, before rushing over to Eccawen to aid her by putting out the fire.

As the flames are patted out on the still unconscious Eccawen, a disembodied hand floats over the elf maiden ...
Eccawen has been restored to 1 hit point and is now conscious again. Missy, I need you to roll for initiative.

Eccawen used the man's arm to pull herself up after the flames were patted out. Her robe was burned to pieces with little bits still attached to cover personal areas. "Thanks," she mumbled, reaching for her short sword. Leaving her rapier on the ground, she approached the bleeding, 3 legged Toad as a giant fireball was forming. Taking the short sword in both hands, she gauged where its heart would be, and thrust the blade forward, angled upwards to jam it through its chest cavity if successful.

Grabbing what little solid bits of robe remained on her back Gilder pulled Eccawen back to a safe distance and fired an arrow at the toad's throat sac hoping to prevent it from letting loose the fire ball building up. Eccawen smiled despite herself from being blocked by the other elf. The growing fireball in the toad's sac looked menacing, and she knew she'd surely die. Inhaling deeply, she hugged Glider from behind. "Been nice knowing you," she said before the fireball collided with Glider's body. She flew backwards, flames licking at her skin. Her head hit the ground pretty hard, knocking her unconscious. She could barely hear the sound of Glider falling to the sandy floor near her.
She faintly heard the sound of someone talking near her, and the refreshing feel of water splashing onto her burning body. She ached all over, but the water splashing in her face was enough to wake her up. She blinked, looking up into the dark eyes of the rogue she saved yesterday. "Hi..." she coughed.

What happened after he fired the arrow, Gilder wasn't sure, he just felt and extreme burning all over him and the sensation of flying through the air before falling unconsious.
"AHHHHHHHH!!!!!" Gilder shouted as he regained consciousness, completely oblivious to the torch Kass had tossed at him, Gilder writhed in pain for several minutes and continued shouting adding a few incoherent obscenities here and there throughout.
"I am never fighting a toad EVER again." he said once he was able to speak normally again, and waited laying in the dirt for the healer to come patch his skin together again.

Miss Fortune
10-20-2011, 09:21 PM
Well, from what I learned to actually hit a target, or for them to hit you, you have to roll higher than their AC. For example, mine is 7. I was told to hit me a person/monster has to roll a 10 or higher. So if you roll a 17, the math is 17-7 = 10, which is a hit. If you roll a 15, you'd most likely miss because it's not higher than 10 when you subtract it from my Armor Class.
Correct me if I am wrong, you should be able to go back a lot of pages and find either Meinolf or Nazgul explaining that to me. I'm still iffy about healing, save throws, etc.
Edit: I am not to sure on the matter, so if Nazgul or Meinolf is still online, you could send them a VM or PM asking about PvP, and how high a To-Hit Roll has to be for the damage to hit you.
Meinolf
10-20-2011, 09:55 PM
Take your thac0 minus your opponents a.c. to get what you need to roll in order to hit.
Korvis: To hit Sprinkles, you need to roll a 13 or higher. When using your throwing daggers this is reduced to 11 or higher, because you get a +2 to ranged attacks from an 18 Dexterity. You also add a -2 bonus to your initiatives (remember lower is better) because of that fantastical Dexterity. You get two attacks a round, whether you are throwing daggers or in melee, because you are dual wielding. Your daggers do 1d4 points of damage. When dual wielding, you suffer a -2 to your to-hit for your off-hand (again, your dex score is helping you here).
Sprinkles: To hit Korvis, you need to roll 16 or higher. You get two attacks a round with your bow, or one attack a round with your mace. Your arrows do 1d6 points of damage, and your mace does 1d6+1.

THAC0 is 20, so the dice roll minus the person's Armor Class equals how high you have to roll to hit the person you're attacking.
Korvis
10-22-2011, 09:57 PM
so your thac0 - your armor class is what i would need to roll to hit you?
Nazgul
10-22-2011, 09:58 PM
THAC0 minus the persons armour class.. And I apologize again, when I fixed the stats on your sheet Korvis, forgot to adjust your THAC0 to 18 for the knives.
So, in this case, as your correct THAC0 is 18, and Eccaen's AC is 7, you need an 11 or better to hit as 18-7 = 11
Miss Fortune
10-22-2011, 09:58 PM
Yes, to hit me you need to roll a 10 or higher since my armor class is 7. Unless it has been changed.
Edit: Yep, things were changed
Korvis
10-22-2011, 10:03 PM
ok then, would you like me to reroll? if not, i hit you with both, at 5 damage and 1 damage, with a 1(-2) initiative roll for next turn...
Miss Fortune

::edit::
im sorry!! >< i feel bad now :( dying in one hit is no fun...
Miss Fortune
10-22-2011, 10:08 PM
Naz might have to correct me, but since you rolled a 17, and a 15, subtract 7 from both of them, and neither equals 11.
Korvis
10-22-2011, 10:09 PM
i thought yall said it was thac0-armor class = what i need to roll.
Nazgul
10-22-2011, 10:10 PM
Yeah, you're going unconscious unfortunately. And I'm going to be starting a new discussion thread very soon to do with combat positioning and movement. This will mainly apply to attacking ranged characters and the time it takes to close the distance on them and stuff, as it has been brought up to me sort of.
You subtract from the THAC0. not the dice roll.
Miss Fortune
10-22-2011, 10:11 PM
I must be confused.
You subtract from the THAC0 to get the number you have to roll to hit someone once you subtract the armor class from the roll?
Nazgul
10-22-2011, 10:14 PM
Think of it this way, the THAC0 is a constant number. If I need an 18 to hit AC0, then to determine what I need to hit any other armour class, I add or subtract form that number accordingly. So if my THAC0 is 18, and I'm hitting AC7 I need to roll an 11 or better as 18-7=11. If I had to subtract form the dice roll, it would make it so that everything becomes virtually imposable to hit,
Miss Fortune
10-22-2011, 10:17 PM
Oh, that makes more sense.
Nazgul

Gilder could show up with a magic sword, teaming up with Valeria and Kass and it still wouldn't be balanced. Irin is one tough Mofo

ok. i go first, then you.
before any special modifiers, you need to roll a 16 to hit me.
before any special modifiers, i need to roll a 11 to hit you with my throwing knives and 13/15 with my right and left hand daggers, respectively.
if any of that sounds wonky, you can double check for me. YOUR thac0 minus my armor rating = what you need to hit, and MY thac0 minus YOUR armor rating is what i need to hit.
::edit::
ill be back in just a few minutes so we can start... have to take care of something so we wont be interrupted :)
Lord Tully
10-23-2011, 01:35 AM
That seems right though I have no idea how you got your armor class down to 4, is that a Dexterity bonus or something? Cause if so I really should've tried for a higher DEX score.
Korvis
10-23-2011, 01:39 AM
i think its because im barely wearing any armor... in fact i asked about this earlier, but it was sort of lost amid conversation... it seems like having heavy armor doesent protect you any more than no armor at all.. it only makes it easier for you to be hit :\
help me remember to ask naz about this.
and also, would you like to fight me vs you? or us vs mobs?
i just thought... maybe it is calculated into your max hit points, because i notice you have several more hit points than i.
::Edit::
looking closer, the shield probably adds to your armor rating.

I'd rather fight monsters, but since your GMing this fight I'm fine with either.
Korvis
10-23-2011, 01:54 AM
okie dokers... monsters it is :D we will go with a giant gnoll. the giant gnoll has 15 hp, and is wielding 2 axes, each of which are 1d8 damage. it has an armor rating of 10. so to know if you hit it, you take your own THAC0 minus 10.
All the sudden, the ground begins rumbling, and one wall of the arena suddenly explodes, throwing debris everywhere. Out of the smoke lumbers a huge gnoll, lumbering toward us...

you know you can fire 2 arrows in one turn right? and you get a... i think its a +2 to your roll for being to the side or back of the creature.
Lord Tully
10-23-2011, 02:14 AM
I know, it's just the way I see it, the time it would take for Gilder to fire an arrow would take about the same amount of time as running to the side. I kinda want these turns to progress with an at least somewhat realistic sense of time, in preperation for fights in the actual RP, you know what I mean?
Oh and do you mean the To hit roll or the Damage roll?
Korvis
10-23-2011, 02:21 AM
the to-hit roll. possibly the damage roll as well, but i know for a fact you get a modifier for the to-hit roll.
The gnoll roars in pain as the arrow slams into its shoulder, blood spurting to the side, turning toward you quickly and throwing one huge axe with its good arm, aiming to take you out quickly before it loses too much blood...
it gets a -2 on the to-hit roll, and damage is 1d8(so its thac0 is basically 18.. 18-your armor rating of 7 is 11):

Gilder easily ducked under the clumsily thrown axe and completely avoided harm. Firmly planting his feet Gilder was able to notch and fire a pair of arrows in quick succession. Once they were away he dropped a hand down to the mace at his belt so he could quickly draw it and strike the beast.

The gnoll stops in its tracks... Making a low, vibrating groan as blood trickles down its face and neck, dripping to the ground...
It reaches up, grabbing the arrow stuck in its eye socket, ripping it out... and taking one step toward you, then falling to its knees, and then with a loud slam, hitting the floor, face first...
The crowd erupts into a roar of applause....
good job!! :D i am avenged!

i think its because im barely wearing any armor... in fact i asked about this earlier, but it was sort of lost amid conversation... it seems like having heavy armor doesent protect you any more than no armor at all.. it only makes it easier for you to be hit :\
Your leather armor sets your base Armor Class to 8, with a -4 bonus from your 18 Dexterity. Also, it is only in later editions that heavier armor restricts how much bonus your Dexterity gives your a.c.
Also, just to reiterate how to determine what you need to roll for to-hit, you take your thac0 minus their a.c. If the gnoll's thac0 was 20, it would need to roll a 16 or higher to hit Kass (20 - 4). If he hit you from behind, he would ignore your Dexterity granted a.c. So he would need to roll 12 or higher (20 - 8). If Kass was wearing elven chainmail (ac rating of 5), her total a.c. would be 1, meaning that gnoll would have to roll 19 or higher to hit (20 - 1).
Oh, and a nifty tip for those classes (warriors and cleric) that can use a shield: if you put one on your back, then even if you are not actively using the shield it will grant you a -1 bonus to a.c. from rear and flanking attacks. I've seen some warriors equip two shields at once: one on their shield-arm and another on their back, just to protect themselves from all sides of attack except for their sword-arm side.
you know you can fire 2 arrows in one turn right? and you get a... i think its a +2 to your roll for being to the side or back of the creature.
I know, it's just the way I see it, the time it would take for Gilder to fire an arrow would take about the same amount of time as running to the side.
Sprinkles actually has the right of it. If Gilder moves he can only fire at half his normal rate of attack. This also means that if Kass moves she can only fire one dagger at a time. While you might not lay waste to the enemies quite as fast, it is often wiser to maintain a sound footing.
Lord Tully
10-23-2011, 02:46 AM
Ok so at least we got most of it right. I was also wondering about shields worn on the back, cause I was planning to have Gilder use two-handed weapons later on.
