The Mature RP section is for games that fall under any of the following categories:
Excessive violence and gore
Excessive language
Sexual, sensual, or otherwise too “physical” for a normal rp
Approval from the gm needed for whatever reason
Anything the gm feels deserves a rating over PG13 (see rating system below)
Mature rp’s provide a lot of really great options for people who have evolved in their writing abilities or want more than what a normal game is allowed to have. But! Like all parts of the forum, there are a few rules that must be followed when creating or playing in one. Let’s see, shall we?
1. All mature rp’s must be RATED!!! This is sooooo important. The rating must be placed in the title of the rp so that everyone can tell what they’re getting into before joining/reading your game. Also, please put a reason for the rating in the FIRST POST OF THE OOC! That way, if someone is morally okay with characters swearing and blowing each other’s heads off during a game, but uncomfortable with reading about characters getting it on, they are fairly warned and can use the rating and description to decide if the rp is right for them.
The rating system is similar to how movies are rated in the US:
G – General audiences. Take this as suitable for kids to read.
PG – Parental guidance suggested. Brief language ok, hints at little sensual activity, maybe a bit of violence.
Note: If you rp is rated G or PG, you don't need to label it.
PG-13 – Parental guidance suggested for kids younger than 13. There can be mild language, violence, and sexuality. Depictions of graphic violence and acts of a sexual nature are prohibited, however references or "fade to black" scenes are okay. If you plan on having this sort of content in your roleplay, you must put the rating in the title, however you can still post these rp's anywhere on the forum.
The following rp's are only allowed in the private and mature sections:
R/M – Restricted or Mature. Now we’re getting into the dirty stuff! Sex, drugs, and rock ‘n roll allowed in here. Excessive violence. Excessive swearing. Excessive drug use. Frequent sexual interactions. Whatever your mind can come up with (within forum rules).
Keep in mind, these are not set in stone, and someone’s PG 13 is someone else’s R. So try to rate your games as properly as you, the gm, feel fit. And then put the explanation in the ooc! Please put your rating in brackets in the title, so that everyone can easily find them!
Here is an example of how to rate your game…
Title: [R] This is my game title here!
First post in ooc: This game is rated [R] because of potential violence, sex and drug use.
2. Stick to the rating. Seriously. Don’t go back and change your PG13 game to an M just because you’ve decided to add a couple of scenes. It’s not fair to other members who might not be okay with the content you are adding.
On the same note, if you join a PG13 game, don’t post M content. Duh. Join the game you want to play in. The gm can and will enforce their rating.
3. Sexual tension/situations are fine in mature rp’s. But sexy business has its own set of rules.
Spoiler: RPA rules about sex
Yes, I said it. SEX.
First of all, don't get your panties in a bunch. Roleplay adventures allows for mature content in certain areas of the forum, and intimacy is part of that content. If such things bother you, there are plenty of other places on RPA that are sex-free where you can still have a fun and fulfilling roleplaying experience.
Second of all, this is not a site for porn, cybering, or getting off on fetishes. Yes, there is a difference between allowing people to write sensually and allowing people to write erotically. While we are committed to allowing you to express yourself, have free speech, stretch your creativity and all of that, we've got to have a few limits here and there.
What are these limits, you ask? Well let me tell you!
1. You may not have an rp dedicated only to sex. In other words, you need to have a central plot other than just getting it on.
2. Detailed writing about any sort of sex will only happen in mature and private rp's rated R, M, or higher. That way if someone's not cool with reading it, they can easily avoid roleplays that have such content without being offended or made to be uncomfy.
3. Characters involved in sexual activity will be of age. RPA is based in the United States, and our laws in much of this country say 18. Therefor, please don't describe sex for characters under the age of 18. This goes double for nonconsentual sex. Nobody wants to read about child rape. Don't even go there.
4. You will not be crude. Let me explain this a little more... The painting of the nude woman in Botticelli's Birth of Venus is artistic. A photo of a naked woman in Hustler magazine is smut. They are both beautiful women, so what's the difference? Its the tone and feel of the way they are presented.
Yes, we understand that this is very much open to interpretation, especially since everything we do here is through text. To assist in drawing the line between steamy and dirty, the staff have made a list of words that are off limits for use in roleplays when describing sex. Please not that these words are not banned from RPA completely, they just are not allowed to be used when writing sexual, sensual, or intimate scenes. Also note that these are not set in stone - we can choose to edit, modify, add to or delete things from this list as we, the staff, sees fit.
Spoiler: no nos
pussy, cunt, cock, dick (insert more words here if/as needed)
5. Also in the crude category: you may not describe sexual organs that are located between the legs in detail. Giving us an idea of what's happening is one thing. Telling us exactly what every bump and curve looks like is quite another.
Spoiler: do and don't
Things you may not describe in detail: penis, vagina, anus
Things you totally can describe: breasts, nipples, butt, lips, tongue, hips, legs, fingers, hands, arms, belly buttons, etc
6. You may not describe actual penetration. This rule applies during sex, oral sex, anal sex, and digital sex (fingers).
7. Let's talk about non-consensual sex. This subject is touchy, and we understand that. But it does and will come up in roleplays, and that's okay as long as the writers of the characters have agreed to the act and are aware of what's happening. (In other words, don't god-mod rape). This sort of sex is the only kind we do not allow you to actually write through. You may describe the things that lead up to the event, and the character's thoughts and feelings after it. But you may not write about the actual rape itself.
Spoiler: a very general example...
Female character walks into a dark alley. She is surprised by a masked man. He says a few crude things and pushes her against a wall.
Fade to black.
She wakes up in a hospital.
8. Now let's talk about fetishes. Hey, we're not going to judge you or your characters if they're going to do more than just standard sex, as long as its within reason (see below). BUT the rules still apply. Write about it as you would any other sex scene, please, using the rules above.
A few specifics: Bestiality. RPA allows writing of humans with huminoid creatures. Human-like aliens, werewolves, catgirls, mermaids, etc. Again, follow the rules. BUT don't post about a person and a dog. Or something like that. Please.
Bondage. Please be very careful about the line between kinky sex and non-consensual sex.
Fetishes that are not allowed: things that involve excrement in any way, children, rape (see above), necrophilia.
9. Photos, drawings, cartoons, or other pictures of people getting it on is still a no-no.
As always, the staff is more than willing to help explain and/or give examples of how to properly write sexual scenes if there is anything you're unsure of. If you don't know if something's allowed, we would much rather you ask us through pm before just posting it and everybody getting upset later on!
***Also - coming soon! Be on the lookout for a new class for how to write sexual interactions in a safe and exciting way!***
4. Gm’s can require approval for their games. This is a big deal in this section, more so than other sections. Ask for approval by pm or in the ooc thread BEFORE posting in the ic. Do not post in the ic and plan on deleting it if you’re not approved! Seriously! The gm of a mature game has every right to accept or not accept your character into his/her game. You do nothing before that. Period.
5. While the gm’s have more power, that means more responsibility. (Spiderman?) Anyway, as a gm, you must enforce ratings, keep up on approvals (don’t leave members wondering if they’re allowed in!), advance the plot, etc.
6. Follow the forum rules too. Racist, insulting, etc language is still not allowed. Don’t godmod, etc etc etc. We know these rules by now, right?
This rule is to include anything else that might possibly be deemed unfit for a public forum as viewed in the staffs opinion. If you are uncertain as to what is and is not acceptable please contact an administrator or an rp mod for further clarification.
8. Don’t forget, if the staff feels that an rp that was previously posted in a general section contains too much mature content, we reserve the right to move it to the mature section. Better than getting it shut down for not following the rules though, right? And don’t worry. We’ll leave a note saying that we moved it, so your game’s members won’t get lost.
So there you have it. Not so bad, right? After all, it’s called the “Mature” section, so I think we can all agree to be mature and handle things well. The Mature rp’s can offer a lot of freedom for some really great games and some fantastic plots, as I’m sure most people have already discovered. And don’t forget to ask your gm or any of the mods/admins if you have any questions in a game!
