The Morphos are a race that has been in existence since humans have. Originally, they were spirit protectors of the Earth – guardians of forests, rivers, hills, and valleys, with their purpose on Earth being to protect Mother Nature’s greatest gift: the natural resources of this planet. Originally, they have no physical forms, are were just small beams of green light capable of sentient thought, that roamed the planet in search of lakes, ponds, forests, and meadows to settle in. However, as the human race expanded, nature’s splendor was soon being annihilated in order to make room for this greedy race. Many Morphos were killed as humans drained lakes, chopped down entire forests, and polluted lakes in order to make way for bigger and better technology. As nature died, the Morphos were started to die along with it – but some Morphos decided that they would not allow themselves to disappear.
As time passed, in order to protect themselves, the Morphos learned to bond themselves with the soul of a human. In doing so, the Morphos would take over the human’s body fully, leaving the human as naught but an empty thought in the back of its own mind. Once the bond is formed, the human will stop aging, and will be permanently stuck at the age they are current in. The presence of a being of magic living inside a human’s host would not always be one that was accepted. Sometimes, the human’s body would reject the Morphos’ presence, effectively killing the Morphos, but also the human as well. Thus, Morphos must choose a host that is strong both mentally and physically. Morphos usually choose to bond with humans that are politically powerful, so they can play a hand in human government and attempt to stop the madness that humans are spreading across the planet. Other Morphos choose humans that are especially physically powerful, so that they can annihilate humans who are causing the planet’s destruction, instead of seeking a less violent solution. In the end, the choosing of the host is up to the individual.
When a Morphos effectively bonds with the soul of a human, they usually develop powers that take form according to the human’s alignment. Should a human’s soul be full of evil and malcontent, the Morphos gains control over shadows and darkness. Should a human’s soul be full of altruism and purity, the Morphos then gains control over light and goodness. Neutral human souls result in a Morphos gaining the power of defense, which allows them to create shields and barriers. Granted, all Morphos, no matter the alignment, have the ability to heal others. Granted, this power has drawbacks, for if a Morphos heals another human, it acts as a poison in their system and effectively kills them. They can heal animals, and people of other races (though Morphos have not seen any other races besides humans) but they cannot heal a human – it will, instead, kill them.
