The Devil's Wake: Chapter II

Rated Mature for mass amounts of violence, blood, and gore.

"I've seen the God of Death himself sweep onto the battlefield, wrap his wings around my comrades and fly them to the River of Sorrows. I've seen surfs fight for horses, while knights simply fled. My countrymen praise me as a warhero, when in my heart and soul I know for certain that the Nine Devils are waiting to drag me to thier depths."

Plot Synopsis

One year ago, from the massacre which occurred at the Gray Plains to the unjust burning of the humble town of Ool, these crimes against humanity only served to fuel the fires which spawned a new nation. Central Ishtaria. Tristan Cyril, or who is better known as Tristan the Betrayer, was at the center of this revelation. It was clear not only to him and his peers, but to the people of this land that the war that had been fought by the Empire and Colonies wasn't going to end soon by themselves.

Central Ishtaria has already gained many supporters and is currently launching a campaign against both opposing nations, but in its foothold of Byzanthea it's nobles ignoring the reason for their cause in the first place fight over who should be king over this new regime.

Meanwhile, in the background a cult that has only been revealed as the Black Friars put sinister plots into motion that somehow have a connection with the war that had started nearly nine years ago. All that is known however that their members are powerful to say the least. This Gabriel Lok, a vampire who had possessed the body of the Holy Arch-Bishop Biaggio, still sends shivers down the spines of those who had witnessed his horrors and all in the name of one only known as "Master."

Existence began with the Flames of Creation, whose magical spark had spawned the first, and mightiest of all the gods, Ae. Extinguishing the flames, Ae used their power to create the Sea of Yggdrasil, where he began to create his vast universe one plane of existence at a time.

There are quite literally hundreds perhaps even thousands of deities over the different realms but the most widely worshiped religion within the Material Plane is the Heavenly Pantheon. The Church constantly travels to other regions ranking in converts. Despite this many regions have their deities which seem to thrive well enough

Spoiler: Heavenly Pantheon

After the Heavenly Pantheon was created there was an ambitious god who didn't wish to share power, and so he sought other sources of power. Maddened by his ambitions he created Stygia a nightmarish realm of chaos that countered the peace of Elysia, and within this realm he created daemons, along with the original Nine Devils. It wasn't too long however until his twisted creations overcame him, and locked him away in the frozen realm of Cania. His name is forever to be considered taboo among gods, devils, and mortals.

The Nine Devils rule over Stygia, and seek nothing more than to conquer Elysia and the gods. The almost eternal war that has been waged between the devils and the angels is known through out the universe as the Great Astral War.

It is split up into thousands of many layers which form a chaotic maze, although the largest of these layers are controlled by the Nine Devils.

Name: Liaman Russvik
Age: 38
Occupation: Ranger and General [badass]

Armor: Liaman has forsaken his Inquisitor plate for armor a little less durable but much more flexible. He wears a padded wool shirt and dark leather slacks beneath his armor. His shirt acts as a gambeson and protects him from damaged rings in his steel scale male shirt. Over his scale male he wears a brigandine of thick, boiled leather with thick plates of steel sewn and bolted in to pockets in his armor. The tails of his brigandine reach down to his knees. On his right arm he wears thick steel plate from collar to wrist. On his left he wears a steel plate gauntlet. He still wears his favorite black boots with rosy brown knee toppers, but now he sports the addition of steel grieves.

Casual Wear: Liaman wears a long sleeve burgundy tunic, brown leather slacks, a black leather jerkin, his same boots without the armor, and a half-cape that drapes over his right shoulder.
Other Items: He wears his old wedding ring on a thin chain around his neck.
Appearance: He stands as a very intimidating sight, the scars from his battle at the cathedral mark him deeper than the flesh, and that is evident. He appears to bear a heavier burden on his shoulders now, but even with his shoulders slumped, he towers over most.

Spoiler: The new and...troubled... Liaman

Personality: While his temperament towards Mages has greatly improved, Liaman has become less of a people person than he was before. His faith has been crushed with the events of the past year. He has renounced his faith and joined Tristan in seceding from the Empire. He views the Empire as a kingdom of lies to be slain to the last and he sees the Colonials in not much of a better light. With the loss of his ability to heal, Liaman finds himself helpless much of the time, and drowns his sorrows in drink. Now more than ever, his family is all that he really holds on to. Liaman remains distraught over the shattering of his beloved greatsword, Ice. The broken sword lies in arranged pieces in Liaman's manse, on a black-and-gold fabric covering what was once the grand alter in his home.

Spoiler: ancient history

Sired by the high born family of Russvik in the city of Byzanthaia, Liaman was treated differently than other children of his stature. Liaman was a bastard child, though the fact was kept tightly guarded within the walls of the Russvik manse. The Rissvik's always played the part of the zealot for the Imperium, donatign gold to line the coffers of the church and even seeing a few of the young men of the Russvik line join the ranks of the Inquisition. Liaman was to follow such a path.

He squired for the Inquisitors at the age of eight, caring for their armor and horses while being trained in the ways of sword and taught in the ways of the church. Discipline was always swift and harsh, and the lash of the church's whips flayed the youthful joy of Liaman at a premature age, turning the boy stoic and coarse at the ripe age of ten. He became a man at the age of twelve, by the seductive coersions of a woman who fleets his memory. That very day, he was to join his master on a Purge of a nearby village.

Liaman was annointed to the rank of Inquisitor and annointed with the Five Oils, the mark of the faith forever branded in to his sword arm; Liaman as ninteen that day. That very year, he wed a nobles daughter, Catalyn. They were happy together, and she was the one constant thing in his life that could make him smile, even after the countless horrors he had seen in his line of duty. Liaman and Catalyn sired five children before a stillborn took the beautiful Catalyn to an eary grave. The physician was dumbfounded at the trajedy, expecting a completely healthy delivery. Sickness was not rampant in the High Born district of the city. Many said that it was the will of the gods that Catalyn be taken, but Liaman refused to settle for the bullshit that was fate. Everything happened because of something or someone.

Sure enough, poison was laced in Catalyn's drinking water. The poision was very distinctive, bearing many herbal extacts from the realm of Shahid. Liaman knew of one person who employed assassins and facilitated such subtle and acute poisons. Liaman's master, High Inquisitor Bran, the very man that Liaman named his first son after, was behind Catalyn's death. Bran said that she was a distraction that needed to be removed. Such fanatical and absurd claims drove Liaman in to a frenzy, and hacked his own master to pieces in a fit of rage. With Bran dead and accused of heresy and treason, Liaman was elevated to he rank of High Inquisitor.

To represent his station, the church had a greatsword forged for Liaman out of the finest steel, folded over a hundred times for peerless durability and craftsmanship. The Russvik direwolf head adorned the pommel, carved in silver. The Russvik family mantra, "Non Dormio" - I Never Rest - was engraved on to the blade. Liaman named the blade Ice. The blade and its wielder are both highly regarded and feared. The Russvik house crest bears a snarling direwolf on the hunt - this has earned Liaman Russvik the nick-name of "Dread-Wolf of the Church".

Liaman has broken off from the church along with the rest of the Empire with Tristan for really no other reason than to keep his family protected and to repay the debts he owes those he has wronged. With the founding of Tristan's Central state, Liaman became a general to help ready Central Ishtaria for impending attacks form both the Colonials and the Empire. His anger has a new outlet on the troops and on the field of battle, retaining his reputation as 'the Dread-Wolf', but now he is the 'Dread-Wolf of Ishtaria'.

His body has been improved greater than it was before, his tireless fighting and self-exertion in the past year has made him stronger. However, even with his new responsibilities, he makes more time for his family than he was ever able to before. That was his condition to help Tristan with his foolish coupe - that for the first time in seventeen years, he may be allowed to be real father to his children, that they will be safe and comfortable.

Personality: Val has refined herself in the past year, no longer able to support her reckless a chaotic lifestyle. However this is only a cosmetic change inside her soul is as cold black and hollow as it ever was
Bio: Despite having very little to do with the events that transpired Val gained when the others in the ragtag group of theirs lost so much. With the Death of Biaggio Val assumed immediate power over the affair of much of the city. The power she gained allowed her to take full control over the City's Criminal Underground. Since the fall of the church and the damage done to Crimson Knights Val was able to rid herself of many of her competitors. She done much with herself in the past year maintaining control over her criminal empire and distancing herself from her servitude to beelzebub.

Armor: Haruko wears magically enchanted garments, made for him by Magi around the world, to withstand blades and the elements. He wears no armor, but can constantly be seen in his casual garments.

Casual Wear: Haruko will normally wear elegant clothing that shows his high stature in society. His boots are usually custom made, and are usually made of fine materials such as leather. They come up his leg and stop directly beneath his knees. His robes aren't loose fitting, they are tight and form fitting, making for quick and easy movement. He normally lets his hair hang at his shoulders but sometimes he will pin it up in a ponytail. His pants are tailored to fit him and allow for easy maneuverability.
Other Items: Being a ninja/assassin means that Haruko carries various throwing knives, smoke bombs and other accessories to get the job done.
Appearance:

Personality: Though Haruko is as kind as they come, and will do all he can to help an individual; he can be a bit headstrong and stubborn. He can be quite spontaneous as well, and has a degree of respect for authority. He isn't as rebellious as others his age, but he is very strong willed and determined. When he sets his mind to something, it would take the gods themselves to stop him from accomplishing it. Haruko can be a little sarcastic at times and is quite the optimistic young lad. He sees the glass as half full rather than half empty. Don't cross him and expect him not to react. Though he has some degree of respect for authority, he won't be pushed around by anyone.

During battle or a mission, Haruko is very deadly and calculative. He is fierce and seemingly bloodthirsty. He takes his time to wheedle out his opponent’s weakness and once the gash is open, he will repeatedly attack the weakness. He is rather calm during a battle or mission and knows how to keep a level head.

Haruko can be as gentle as a puppy, but as fierce as a lion. Complicated like a maze and ever fueled with the desire to become a great warrior magus. Haruko has a lot to learn, but he is determined to learn, and it is that internal drive that allows him to push forward even in the midst of a storm. He has a motto that he goes by. Treat others the way in which you want to be treated. He doesn't look down on others and sees everyone with a degree of equality. Because of his extensive training in various homeland fighting arts as well as the arcane and mystic arts, he can often be found searching for knowledge.

Bio: Born in the land where people worship dragons, a land in the Far East. He was abandoned at a very young age, approximately 5 years of age. He had no siblings, the streets of the Far East settlements were his home; however, he was eventually taken in by a wealthy gentleman who saw him as a slave rather than a son. He was taught to clean, cook and serve. He became submissive to the one man he considered his father. Eventually he began to develop mixed feelings towards his "father" mostly due in part to the abuse he had be receiving whenever he did something wrong. At the age of 8 he ran away, back to the streets where he found fighting to be his only friend. He had to fight to survive, and fight he did. As he ducked and dodged the many men sent to find him, he eventually stumbled onto a dojo. He master swordsman there took him in because he saw promise within the young man. When Haruko began his training, the sword master gave him two tantō. He informed Haruko that once he had mastered them, he'd receive another weapon as well as respect from his peers. Haruko was picked on and picked out by everyone at the dojo, except one person. As time went on he formed a brotherly bond with the boy who had been there many years before him. He began to consider the boy a brother. His brother helped him master the tantō and upon mastering the blades, was given the Naginata to master. Haruko gained the respect of his peers and began training with the Naginata. Haruko, though trained in the arts of weilding a Naginata, opted not to use it. Haruko and Mugen became inseparable, that is until the sword master separated them due to their training.

He barely had time for his brother, but truth be told his brother was the one who kept him inspired to reach the limit and beyond with his training. At the age of 18 he was fully accepted into the Attila Clan, and used his skills for their purpose. He was at the top of his class, the fastest they'd ever seen, and by far the lethalist mercenary aside from their earlier graduate Mugen. He would assassinate those the clan thought of as trouble, and would do so without even shedding a tear. When he graduated, it was then that he realized that his brother had just as much respect for him as he did. As the years went on, his brother eventually met a woman and Haruko began spending time with a wealthy gentleman whom had a bounty on his head, but Haruko never collected it. This wealthy man in fact began to consider Haruko his own son with the time they spent together. Finally he had found a father figure as well as an older brother. Life for him was perfect in a sense. Haruko never accepted the woman his brother started dating, and saw her as a threat to their relationship. It was he who informed the clan of his brother’s relationship, but what happened next was unexpected. When his brother went on a killing spree, Haruko stood back and watched. He was both shocked and amazed by what his brother could do. Even though they had been trained in the same arts, he still felt that his brother would surely kill him if he knew what he had done. When his brother left on his adventures, Haruko left as well. When news reached him that his old friend had passed on, he was very much surprised by the gifts left to him. He, at first, felt that he was unworthy, but he soon began to realize that he had been too hard on himself for far too long and it was time to enjoy life. Haruko gained the rich man's entire estate.

After the death of his old friend, and the acquisition of such vast wealth, he decided to stop his old ways. Eventually he was contacted by his brother. He decided to travel with his brother around the world. During their travels around the world, he separated from his brother and started hanging around the Colonies. While in the Colonies, he met Akira, a high level mage who showed him a great many things, and taught him a few tricks before vanishing suddenly. Eventually he met back up with his brother who was now serving a young lad named Tristan. Haruko immediately offered his blades and skills to help.
