Some of what lies beneath...
Appearance (Apparel): While off duty he wears neutral grey cargo slacks, black boots, a form fitting white shirt and a black leather jacket with the patch of the USS Ulysses sewn on the right shoulder beneath a Federation Special Operations patch.
Background: Commander MacQuarrie was previously a member of the Starfleet Intelligence and Special Operations Division. Before his post on the USS Ulysses, the Commander served on the Special Services vessel, the USS Braveheart on high-risk mission in to parts of space the Federation usually was not allowed. Much of his service history is classified and he is sworn under oath to not speak the details of most of his missions, as the details of such missions would incriminate the Federation of Planets with not only the Romulans, but the Klingons and several other races.
On one certain mission, Nathaniel MacQuarrie was a 1st Lieutenant at the time and he was on a ground team in Klingon space. The mission was a snatch-and grab operation on a minor Klingon separatist colony. The political disarray was something the Klingon hierarchy did not want getting out, and it didn't, not to the general public. On this high-risk infiltration mission, MacQuarrie and his squad were assigned to rescue a small batch of political hostages. The mission went well up until the last stage when the Klingons had upgraded their security, a detail that the Intelligence operatives had failed to report. Tripping security, MacQuarrie and his squad came under fire from Klingon separatist forces. MacQuarrie and his men held off the attackers as the Braveheart locked on to their beacons, the locking time delayed due to disruptor arrays set up by the separatists. When the group started to get beamed up, Macquarrie was partially trapped in an explosion as the was getting beamed up, not to mention the several phaser burns suffered in the midst of the firefight.
Back aboard the Braveheart, MacQuarrie was quarantined to sick bay, sustained on life support until the Braveheart docked at Deep Space Nine where the highly skilled trauma doctors there were able to save Nathaniel's life, but not without him leaving with more than he came in with. Much of his tissue was damaged beyond repair in the explosion, so synthetic and cybernetic components were implanted to replace and improve Nathan's physical and mental capabilities. For his actions in the line of duty, he was offered the Medal of Honor and the Medal of Valor and was given roughly a year of leave so that he could acclimate to all of his new body parts and systems. When he returned to active duty, he was given the rank of Commander and was assigned to the USS Ulysses as First Officer.
Personality: Used to operating under high stress situations, Nathan MacQuarrie can seem unflappable at times, keeping a cool head and occasionally a cavalier attitude towards situations that would have some other Starfleet officers wetting their jumpsuits. He is not immune to every situation, by any means. Still plagued by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, around Klingons he is very uncomfortable and possibly volatile. Furthermore, he can be very uncivil in the early hours of his shift as he does not sleep well and his implants have the tendency to give him terrible headaches. He is a brusque and honest man who is not afraid to speak his mind
Other Important Information: He frequents the ship psychologist on a [minimum] weekly basis as ordered by the surgeon general.
