World Building: Space Opera

I just poked my head in, but I am somewhat interested in this... kinda thrown off by the word "opera" but since it had space... and I AM a space cop...

Shows like Firefly, Star Trek and so on where people routinely travel between planets and solar systems with faster-than-light drive are usually referred to as "Space Opera", thanks to some handwavium in the hard sciences department. The movies Avatar, Pandorum and to a lesser degree the Aliens franchise, interstellar travel takes years, so ship crews and passengers use some sort of statis tubes or cryogenics to keep from aging on the voyage, so are seen as more realistic by the hard sciences.
