Remy’s eyes fluttered open at five am; at this point she had trained herself to wake up so early. It was a constant, even if she only got three hours of sleep she would wake up at five thirty. The teen sighed softly as she got out of bed begrudgingly, a little more sleep would have been welcomed but much like a mother she had much to do to get her household ready. First however Remy had to get herself ready so her normal routine of shower, brush her teeth, and wash her face had to be followed.
By the time she had finished with her cleaning session it was about
5:20 am. Remy stood in her room hair still wet from her shower, draped in a towel and on a hunt for clothes. It didn’t take much hunting however since all Remy did was merely grab the first outfit she could find in her dresser. After pulling on her undergarments, graphic T, and dark colored flare jeans she looked into the mirror that hung on her bedroom door. It seemed fine, the clothes were clean but something was missing. Remy grabbed a small ornate locket that sat in a bowl of jewelry on her nightstand. The locket contained a picture of Remy and her mother
(taken when she was about five) and on the opposite side was a picture of Remy and her younger sister
(Taken about a year ago). Once the precious item was secured, she walked out of her room heading directly towards the kitchen.
It was almost five thirty when she glanced at the clock near the kitchen stove. Her father would have normally been getting ready by now; the sounds of water running normally could be heard coming from the bathroom. However today it was silent and all Remy could think while starting the coffee brewer up was
‘yesterday must have been a bad day for mom.’ A distraught look came across her face as she continued to think of the subject grabbing several items from the fridge and placing them on the counter. The wonderful aroma filled the house as the coffee brewer’s hot water finally hit the grounds. The first drips of the wonderful beverage making their way into the contain that awaited them.
Since no one else was up as of yet she would simply start making a bagged lunch for her sibling. First up was her little sister’s lunch, which was quickly packed with her favorites, a peanut butter and banana sandwich, apple slices that were cut to look like rabbits, a blue kool-aid juice pouch, a mozzarella cheese stick, and a snack bag of crunchy cheetoes. The sandwich was made and of course placed in a box to make sure nothing smoothed it, the other items packed in around it. Remy smiled to herself as she pulled out a small note card and a sharpie, writing on it
‘Your smile is too pretty to never share it with the world.’ She then began to draw a
dinosaur the corner of the note card, coloring it in once the outline was finished. The note was then placed in her sister’s lunch box, which was then zipped shut and moved to the side.
Glancing over towards the clock once more, blinking when she noted the time was 5:46. The coffee that she had started earlier was now done brewing. Remy grabbed her
favorite mug and poured herself a cup adding only a small bit of sugar and cream. With her coffee in hand she walked into the small living room, turning on the television to the news before plopping herself down onto the couch. While she watched she sipped at her beverage simply letting time pass. Once it was six o’clock Remy removed herself from the couch and headed down the hall towards the bedrooms.
The door that always remained open was her little sister’s, bits of light escaped her room from the heart shaped night light. She stood there for a moment a smile coming across her face, she did actually enjoy taking care of little Lilly. Walking inside Lilly’s room Remy hovered over the small girls form before placing a gentle hand on her shoulder.
“Lilly wake up, today is your first day of school I even packed your favorite lunch” She said her voice emitting the same tones a caring mother would have. The small girl tried to hide under the covers as if trying to escape being awoken. This act made Remy chuckle before she shook the small girls form once more
"Come on if you get ready now I will have breakfast waiting for you. Scrambled eggs and bacon, I even have some apple juice you can drink.” As Remy spoke the promise of food seemed to make Lilly sit up in bed. She rubbed her eyes before looking up at her sister, moving out of the bed in an almost half dazed state of mind.
The little girl headed in a bee line for the bathroom; during this time Remy pulled out a cute outfit for Lilly, placing it on her bed to wait for her return.
Remy then headed back towards the kitchen, placing two cast iron skillets on the stove and turning on the burners. Bacon was placed in one pan and in the other, a small amount of olive oil. She grabbed four eggs, cracking them open into a bowl and stirring them until they were nice and mixed. The pan still needed to heat a little more so Remy placed three pieces of bread into the toaster over then hung near the oven. She continued to cook and prepare breakfast, and just as her little sister came out from her room dressed and ready for the day, breakfast was ready. Remy made her sister a plate, even putting jam on Lilly’s toast for her before making her own plate. The two of them ate in the living room in between bites however a small conversation grew.
“Are you excited about school?” Remy questioned after swallowing a bite of toast. Lilly looked over towards her sister before her grey-green eyes glanced back at her plate. A small voice then spoke
“I don’t know..” A look of concern grew on Remy’s face
“What’s wrong Lilly?…I thought you liked your school.” Remy nibbled on a piece of bacon as her litter sister pushed her eggs around on the plate before answering
“Well…what if my teacher is mean? What if she doesn’t like you being at the parent teacher meetings like last year?” The question itself was valid and last year it was difficult to explain to the teachers why Remy had to be the guardian in the current situation; however Remy made sure to fill out the proper forms so that she was registered in her sister’s school as a guardian. Remy has even been emancipated to avoid issues in her high school since her father was a bit too distracted to worry about signing papers.
“I promise nothing like that will happen this year Lilly, now finish your breakfast.” Remy said giving her sister a reassuring smile.
The two of them finished breakfast around
6:40, while her sister packed up her backpack Remy simply packed a thermos full of coffee and made sure her own messenger bag was ready for school. She had money for a small lunch and of course her notebooks and sketchpads were inside the bag, her wallet was their and in truth everything seemed to be in order. Remy put on her black converse, lacing them up, before helping her sister get a jacket on. Remy walked towards the door of the apartment grabbing jacket and lazily pulling on it before grabbing the keys next to the door. Behind her Lilly followed ready to start heading to school.
“Dad! I’m taking Lilly to school!” Remy called back before walking outside with her sister, locking the door behind her. The duo walked down the stairs, the cool morning air hitting their faces and making sure they were indeed awake. Lilly had her backpack and lunch that Remy packed for her earlier, Remy simply had her messenger bag and of course keys. Since they did live a good thirty minutes away from either school Remy left just before seven to be sure they both made it in time.
They walked down into the parking area of the apartment, finding the ugly aquamarine 1993 ford escort that Remy drove. First she unlocked the passenger side door for her sister, before walking around and getting into the drivers side.
The car itself was small, old, not the prettiest, and a stick shift but it was Remy’s car and no one else’s. Before the car was hers it belonged to her mother. Remy let her sister choose the music they listened to while they drove from the area around the hospital to school. As per norm it took about thirty minutes to reach Lilly’s school by using the free way. Traffic was actually fairly calm by the time they left seeing as how most people were already at work downtown by then. As they pulled up to Lilly’s school they stopped near the front entrance with little traffic seeing as how they were about an hour early. Remy then leaned over and hugged her sister
“Have a good day okay? If you need me call my school, if I need to pick you up I can alright? But only if it’s an emergency.” With that she kissed her sister on the forehead before letting her out. Remy watched as the little girl she loved so dearly walked into the school making sure she got in safely.
Once her sister was in school Remy turned off the music her sister picked changing it to a talk radio station. She sighed softly before driving off; it should only take about five minutes to reach her own high school. Giving her about twenty minutes to kill once she got there. Time passed and Remy drove, parking on the street just outside the school property, sure enough it only took five minutes. When she turned off her car the clock read
7:37. Remy stepped out, pushing down the locks to the door, despite her being sure hardly anyone could drive stick shift she still would rather be safe. Remy situated the messenger bag that hung from her shoulder, walking inside the school gate and preparing herself mentally for her last year of high school.
