*The M4A1 carbine is a U.S. Military surplus. Late in the war, the U.K. began to import large numbers of American surplus firearms to bolster its military. Officers and “non-combat” personnel (such as medical experts), who would typically be issued pistols, were often issued these surplus U.S. weapons so that British L85A2 rifles could go to front line troops.*
History/Bio: Until the war hit home, Anna never imagined a life for herself in the military. Her childhood was nothing like those of many future soldiers; both parents were always home, except when they were going to work at the local high school. Christine Melanie taught English, and Robert Melanie taught biology. Neither of them had any inkling of military service, nor did they ever plan any such future for their daughter. Anna made straight-As in high school, struggling more with making friends than completing calculus homework. It didn’t take long before her years of high school were over, and excitable young Anna was headed off to Oxford University to study whatever would help her in her future plans. After only three years, Anna breezed through Oxford and entered the Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine in 2033, where she finally was given an opportunity to pursue her dream of a medical career.
Unfortunately, global events complicated her pursuits when a series of 2033 USF offensives in Eastern Europe, though failed, struck fear deep into the hearts of the British parliament. Resources were scrambled, factories were refitted to produce war goods, and massive enlistment campaigns spread around the country like wildfire. Production and recruitment in the U.K. continued at an unreal pace, but more than that was required to halt Russia. British, German, and French forces led the fights on the front lines of Eastern Europe, but more was needed. Western European nations began to purchase supplies from the United States, which was fairing, though poorly, a great deal better than Europe. Surplus M16s, M4s, M4A1s, and numerous other firearms, equipment, and vehicles flooded into Europe.
In 2036, out of feelings of loyalty to her nation, Anna signed an agreement to enlist in the British Army following completion of medical school. An “Accelerated Fellowship Program” set up by the government allowed her to complete all of the requirements for a medical degree by early 2038, and Anna graduated with her Cambridge medical degree shortly afterward.
Following basic training and officer school, Anna was awarded a direct commission to Lieutenant (1st Lieutenant in U.S. Army ranks), and shipped to an auxiliary base in northern France. Lieutenant Melanie never enjoyed leadership, nor was she much of a soldier. Her marksmanship scores had not been very high, not that she was a bad shot, she just couldn’t get used to handling a rifle. All of her time was spent in the rear lines anyway, working in military hospitals and treating injured soldiers, putting her medical talents to use rather than her military lack of talents.
And then, in 2038, Hell arrived to Earth. Nuclear fire decimated every major city on Earth, with her beloved home of London being the first casualty. Both of Anna’s parents and her boyfriend were killed in the USF bombing. Nuclear explosions littered Europe, destroying everything. Somehow, Anna managed to survive, traveling with a small group of civilians and soldiers of various nationalities to Paris, France, a city only a few kilometers from her former “base.”
Despite her wishes, necessity pushed Lieutenant Melanie into combat. Her first skirmish, in early 2039, occurred when a USF force launched an offensive against the Forward Operating Base where Anna was "stationed." A visiting colonel of the British Army, who had come to assess the FOB's tactical capabilities, was heavily injured in the attack before the USF could be pushed back. Lieutenant Melanie, the most qualified medical officer in the area, treated the colonel's injuries, and was rewarded with a promotion to captain from the grateful colonel. A few days later, the colonel succumbed to irreparable internal wounds. Now, one year later, Captain Anna Melanie still prefers to avoid combat whenever possible, instead focusing on treating injured soldiers, marines, and civilians. She spends most of her time withdrawn, remaining in relative safety whenever possible, and trying to keep away from people.
