I was given that image as inspiration to make this story:
Like any other day, the sun hung high in the air as the waves crashed against the shore, spraying salt water in the air. A young girl walked along the shoreline, as she did everyday about this time. She looked out into the ocean, as she did everyday, and pondered on the days to come. What does she want to do with her life? Will she ever find the one? When will everything change for her?
The young girl always thought of these things do to her life at home. Though she lived close to the beach, she lived in the poorest house you ever will see, with her parents. Both parents were nothing to society. They were both on heavy drugs and alcohol and had no jobs of their own. They barely squeaked by.
She always dreamed of one day actually living a life. Maybe she'd get lucky and win some kind of lottery? That was only a pipe dream. She never had the cash to buy a ticket anyways.
So she stood here on the beach, everyday, wishing that something would happen in her life. Something that would change everything for her and her family.
Something hard hit her feet in when the waves came up. She looked down at something that was half buried in the sand at her feet. It looked old, but it had a certain shine to it. She reached down and moved the wet sand off the object. What she found took her breath away. What she held in her hand, was a small locket. The locket was not shut, nor locked, so it opened into an even more beautiful inside. The colors mixed and spiraled into the most gorgeous and unique pattern. She instantly fell in love with it. She looked around to see if anyone had lost this object or seen her pick it up. When she saw no one was around, she pocketed the gem and headed for home.
That night, as she lay in bed, she looked up to what was left of her ceiling and thought about what she had found today. They didn't have dinner that night, since no one had any money for groceries. She was starved, but couldn't keep her mind off the object. Though, it was beautiful, she had to worry for her family more. Tomorrow, she was going to an antique shop and see what it was worth.
Morning came, and she was the first to wake. She slipped through the front door and ran into town. It took her awhile, but she found a store that takes these sort of things. When she walked in, a rather healthy looking old man sat behind the counter and smiled at her.
"What can I do ye' fer, young'n?" The man's thick accent was rather charming. She walked up to the counter shyly and put the locket up on the counter.
"I want to know how much this'll go for." Her said in a small voice.
The man picked up the object and examined it for a long moment. A minute or so passed and he set down the object before her.
"This, little guy, will go fer $20. No more, no less." He seemed assured and the girl believed him. She wanted desperately for it to be worth so much more, but that money will at least feed everyone for a few nights. She thanked the man and took off home with the money.
When the girl left, the man picked up the locket with a smirk. "Boy, that girl sure did find sumthin'.. This'll be worth tons t'the right person.." He chuckled to himself..
