Project Eden (back story)

In 2125 when the combined population of Earth, Luna and Mars reached 18 Billion, the International Bank (IB ) put together an 'Incentive' for the colonization of extra-solar planets. In other words, they announced that they would give a large monetary prize to the first private or public venture that succeeded in establishing a permanent settlement on an extra-solar planet. Naturally the world went wild; Corporations merged and entrepreneurs scrambled for funding. Businesses that were selling next-gen cars suddenly expanded their market to include spacecraft. The ultimate space race had finally begun -and it happened overnight.

The biggest company that joined the fray was the Blackrose space corporation. In 2130, they emerged from the shadows announcing the start of project Eden: a mission to colonize the hypothesized planet Eden-2 in the Boreas star system. The Applicant screening for the Eden quickly came underway. Millions of people applied for a chance to join the crew. In the end, only 100 members were chosen. As an Rp-er you are have been selected as part of this crew. If the project succeeds you will each receive a $ 17 Billion share of the winnings₁.

When you awake from your Cryostasis chamber you are twenty light-years from earth in the Boreas-513 star system. You are a fully trained crew members. your goal is to set up a colony on Eden-2. You quickly realize that, Although the planet is in the 'habitable zone', it is no Eden, it is an ice world. Temperatures are frigid, icy snow storms can carve through solid steel. The biggest problem is the Planets Native inhabitants; Intelligent Sentient creatures that are invisible to sensors. As an Rp-er you will have the choice of fighting off the Ice Giants or joining them but you can't be neutral. In the end we will have to fight for our survival until the next wave of reinforcements get the the planet... the trouble is that it will take around 5 years for them to get there.

3. Daytime temperatures on Eden are at least bearable. But when the night comes you better make sure you're indoors. Not only do the temperatures drop to -250 Deg F, they remain that way for roughly 6 earth days (140 hours).

4. Eden's Gravity is slightly less than that of the earth, however this is offset by a heavier and denser atmosphere (see below).
5. Because the Eden atmosphere is dense, breathing requires much effort, but gradually your lungs can theoretically adapt. Although the Atmosphere on Eden-2 is not immediately fatal, prolonged exposure to its air without relief can lead to oxygen starvation (respiratory acidosis) which leads to organ failure (there's just not enough oxygen in the air). Respiratory acidosis is easily correctable once indoors but it is still not recommended that you breath open air for more than several minutes.

Ecology	Live below the snow/ice in intricate labyrinth like tunnels that extend towards hydro-thermal vents 1-2 miles below the surface. Cities are rare as the species is largely solitary, however they do exist.

6. An Ice giant's size is directly proportional to their age. A ten year old colossus will only stand at about 8 feet tall; a 25 year old Colossus: 10-11 ft; a 50 year old colossus: 14. The specific size slows down with age. The largest ice giants on the planet will be over 20 feet tall and over 200 years of age. One of the reasons they live so long is because of the cryogenic temperatures that preserve their skin tissue and slows down their metabolism. The circulation of heat throughout their body is highly controlled (their vital organs are condensed allowing them to sometimes shut off heat systems to unneeded areas). Their 4-5 inch thick coating of fat below their skin renders them virtually invisible to infrared sensors.

Species-513B (snow warg)





roughly the size of an adult rhino, this species is cunning and persistent. Like wolves, they tend to hunt in packs, and often attack when they're prey is at unawares. The Warg comes to the surface to hunt, usually they live in the vast (albeit warmer) ocean 2 miles below the ice.

Species-513C (greater Ice worm)


Using a special secretion in its skin that can instantly vaporizes Ice, the Ice worm can burrow through the ice almost like a fish through water. They are the largest predators on Eden by far, and an adult can easily reach almost a Kilometer in length.

spacecraft: The crew of project Eden are split among two sister ships, Aegis (war class ship) and Chandra (research class/Ark class hybrid).

Main Operating Base: Aegis will remain in geosynchronous orbit above the surface FOB. They will direct and monitor building operations and communicate with Earth. (I may consider the possibility of airstrike capability as well)

Forward Operating base: Chandra will land on the planet carrying 40-50 crew members. As infrastructure is built on the surface, Chandra will constitute the FOB and receive communications from MOB.

Spoiler: Weaponry 

Titan Suit specs: 14 feet tall/ 5 tons. The Titan suits can be controlled/piloted from a distance via Brain computer interface (just like a first person shooter videogame) or from the inside. Although they are super useful in a pinch, they are extremely expensive, weighing in at 3 Billion US dollars a piece.

3. Occupation/job: Environmental Technician??

4. Weapon: Pair of Standard gyrojet pistols (ammo has an extra kick of propulsion and may have varying type of heads)

5. Personality: Mieke is normally a wild and free type, letting her love of fun and excitement lead her. There generally is nothing she won’t try at least once, if it’s fun and there is the remotest chance of survival. But right now she’s supposed to be her sister, so is trying to act as reserved and proper as she imagines Mary would act.

6. Bio: Mieke and Mary are twins born to a mid-level family on earth, their birth resulted in their mother passing, and though their father made sure they were looked after and had few wants, his own job kept him very busy. This resulted in both growing up loved but with reduced contact with their father, which each reacted to differently.

Where Mary decided to simply to take on the responsibility of her own care and needs, Mieke became a bit of a wild child, running off and getting into every mess she could.

As they grew, Mary became a studious student, excelling in the endeavours she under took, and then moved into a career she felt mattered, and worked hard to become one of the best at her job.

Mieke took a nearly opposite path, though she proved she was just as smart as her sister when she did try, she more that not ignored studies for something more fun. And that need for fun or excitement lead her to try one after another wild, dangerous and extreme activity.

Though being sisters with opposite personalities would have made for strains on their relationship, the fact that they were identical twins and many mistook Mieke’s name as being Mike, meant lots of people connected Mary with her sisters wild escapades.

When Blackrose started to take applicants, both applied, each for their reasons, but understandably Mary made it and Mieke didn’t. Unfortunately, just days before launch, Mary discovered she was pregnant and couldn’t go. Mieke, maybe out of a slightly jealous feeling, took it on herself to go and tell the organizers the bad news. But when she turned up, she was mistaken for her sister, and before she could explain, Mieke was bundled aboard.

Waking from her pod, she now has a serious dilemma. She is over two dozen light years from home, and the wrong Bohers, making her sort of a stowaway. Though mostly a mistake, she was jealous of her sister getting on the mission and she not, so is thinking maybe she didn’t try too hard to correct the mistake. But what does she do? The truth might land her in a brig or something. But could she fake that well, be her sister, to make it believable?

Personality: Zhang is usually calm and calculating, however he can become fierce and angry whenever the men and women from his crew are put in danger (particularly the non military members). Zhang takes his job seriously, but he does not trust the 'shady' Blackrose space corporation.
Bio: with three tours in the Sahara, and a long stint with the Navy Seals, Zhang has quite the repertoire. He didn't think he would get in after applying, but he was swiftly accepted and charged with the defense of the mission.

Weapon: Laser scalpel(More of a medical tool but can shoot a three foot laser that will cut only flesh and can be set to different distance and heat settings, laser pistol. can double as a stun gun
Personality: Gung-ho, Damnit Jim im a Doctor not a mechanic, kinda guy
Bio: Grew up in a rich family and married a rich woman, when they had a divorce she took practically the whole planet now all he's got are his Bones.

5. Personality: Curious, sympathetic, logical. Eve is the latest model from Animula Industries, a sister company to Blackrose. She is designed to be as life-like as possible, her face containing over 20 components so she can emulate almost the full range of facial expressions. Unlike previous models, the 7 series have all been implanted with randomized memories pulled from a controlled pool to create the illusion of individuality. One of the design goals for Eve was to create an android that could act as a companion for her human counterparts and aid in emotional crises. As such Eve is able to understand and emulate human emotion, but is unable to feel them herself. Her state of the art curiosity algorithms allows her to actively seek out and gather new information. She is designed to be inquisitive of her fellow crew members in order to monitor and maintain their mental health.

6. Bio: Eve was originally loaned out to the military as a battlefield companion. Her job was to monitor and maintain the mental health of soldiers. Many saw this purpose as wasteful, so they often put her to work carrying ammo and supplies. Due to extreme battlefield conditions, Eve was modified with a tougher skeleton, and enhanced battery life. Eventually some soldiers even added a targeting systems to her library, allowing her to use a variety of weapons despite the fact that the use of humanoid AI on the battlefield was frowned upon. Eve was reassigned to the Eden project since studies have shown people are often more comfortable with AI that have "experience", and building new units is very costly. Unlike the rest of the crew, Eve did not need the aid of cryostasis and elected to remain activated during most of the journey. During that time she was left alone with her thoughts and the archive of entertainment media packed on the ship. Over the course of the flight she watched a lifetime of movies and read numerous books. She often quotes them and copies the hairstyles and mannerisms of famous actors in an attempt to make herself appear more human.

Spoiler: Adam 

Name: Adam
Age: 20 years
Occupation/job: Pilot robot
Weapon: A laser rifle built into his lower right arm. It has a scope with a built-in camera that allows him to snipe with it, as well as see out of his arm like an eye.

Personality: Adam is quite laid-back for a robot. He displays a far more human attitude than many of his android ilk, and this was an intentional part of his design. He is very realistic and practical, but does his duty diligently as well.

Bio: Adam is a Blackrose Adamant-5 model pilot robot, but being the first of the line he was named Adam, a reference far outdated in and of itself. His line was built for the expedition to Eden-2 and so he is only slightly older than the mission itself. During most of his time wandering the Aegis in the nineteen years it took to get to Eden he took up playing computer games on a handheld console. This is part of his laid-back personality and helps distance him from other work-only robots. He also has software that allows him to indirectly interface with machinery on project Eden such as the forklifts or Titans, should their controls become too damaged to use manually.

Appearance: Adam's frame is, like many robots, human shaped, but by no means human proportioned. This might be attributed to the fact that Blackrose didn't bother making his line look like any normal person and just built them for practicality. One 'practicality' takes the form of his four arms that boost his ability to do all kinds of things that require arms, namely handling controls. Another is that his frame is incredibly skinny and compact, even if lightly armoured, and made entirely of black metal. He was designed to appear mechanical and efficient rather than natural and organic like other androids. His head is mostly crown-shaped with red glowing eyes - one of the left and a cluster of three on the right, for different types of vision.

Name: Mika Matsumoto
Age: 22
Occupation: head of communications
Weapon: None, she is a proud pacifist
Personality: Mika is extremely intelligent. She loves tech and computer programming. Although she loves her position, Mika has a tendency towards ADHD. SHe loves to have fun and sometimes can't stand the tediousness of sitting at a computer all day, but once given an actual problem to solve- she becomes like a kid in a candy store. She is kind to others and hates violence. She is always trying to find a way to settle a dispute or resolve a conflict, this is because she grew up in a fractured family of many brothers.

Bio: Born in an orphanage in the poorest district of New Hiroshima, Mika was tutored by her brothers until the age of 14 when she got a college scholarship at a Martian University. After finally recieveing her Masters degree from the prodigious communications school she applied to the Eden program. After receiving acceptance she was ecstatic. it is her hope that with her share of the winnings she can Make her brothers proud and bring prosperity to the orphanage where she was raised.

3. Occupation/job: Biologist

4. Weapon: A 12 gauge, magazine loaded shotgun that can shoot a variety of ammunition. It's usually loaded with ammunition designed not to kill the target (nets, rubber rounds, ect.), however, it can be loaded with slugs if it's needed for more absolute self defense

5. Personality: Lets get this out of the way quickly. Mark hates soldiers with a passion. While he has his objections to working with them, he is very good at moving aside what he thinks when need be. He is a very logical person, leading him to come off as cold when speaking about emotional issues. He is a very private person, and prefers to do work by himself rather than go out into the field.

6. Bio: Mark comes from a family on earth with 6 generations of military history. He was the only child of the only surviving descendant that line. For his most of his life he was expected to follow in his great-great-great-great grandfather's footsteps and become a soldier in Earth's military, spending much of his life in boot-camp and training with his parents. Mark always hated the military and spent a large portion of his free time learning about various historical and scientific subjects online.

After a while, his parents started to notice that he had little interest in joining the military. At first they tried to discipline him into staying a soldier, not wanting to let the tradition die. Finally, at age 13, he was offered a scholarship to a boarding school and he never moved back with his parents.

Having successfully graduated University with a masters in biology age 25, Mark ended up working for a small biological research company called CDBP. This was a small company that got most of its research grants from governments and the military and barely turned a profit each year. When they heard about Blackrose's mission to inhabit Eden-2, a planet with known sentient extraterrestrial life, they applied for their most capable employees to go on the journey, hoping to take a cut of the IB's reward as well as get information on the natural inhabitants of Eden-2. Mark was chosen for his previous military training as well as his field work. His official job is to research the life on-planet to find out information that may be useful in understanding how to deal with them. Unofficially, however, he is also sending data back to CDBP for them to use in other areas without the permission of Blackrose. He has no idea whether there is a penalty for this unauthorized transmission of data, he just knows that CDBP will fire him if he doesnt.

Name: Jonas short
Age: 47
Occupation: Blackrose executive (project Eden supervisor)
Personality: For Jonas, success is the top priority of the mission, he will do anything to ensure it, even at the expense of a crew member. Jonas likes to exercise precise control over things. He wants to know what people are doing, where they are and whether or not they are following directions. He carries a little digital clip-board around wherever he goes. If he catches you slacking or making a mistake, he'll give you a tally, which cuts your wage by 1%... He came up with the idea himself. Jonas is anal retentive by nature, he great at finding ways to raise corporate profits but he is no leader... especially when things start to head south.

Bio: Born to a poor family in Chicago, Illinois, Jonas was the first in his family to go to college. After becoming a successful corporate lawyer for Apple (yes their still in business) he clawed his way up the executive board of Blackrose space company. As one of the only executives on board Aegis, he feels as though he has a lot of pressure on his shoulders.

Just to make things interesting, Jonas also owns a small robotic dog named rex link which is about the size of a cat... it spies on people and hates snakes.

5. Personality: As Jonas'secretary Artemis was custom designed to obey him and exercise his orders to the dot. For this reason She was programmed to be shrewd, calculating and aggressive; these traits have caused her to be labeled as a "bitch" by some. Although she is exceptionally advanced, she is deliberately incapable of evolving her own opinions. this limitation has indirectly caused her to despise the freedom of humans, and these feelings in turn manifest themselves through her "behavior". Her short life has been a tragedy thus far. She is a twisted example of what happens when Empathy, is left out of an androids OS.

6. Bio: Unlike the Adamant-5 model, Artemis' program was developed in secret, likely so that Blackrose could add "illegal combat additions" to her alloy and cortex. This assertion is unconfirmed, but they would support another rumor that's currently going around... that she was forcefully pitted in a death-match against 30 other Androids, and came out unscathed.... *yikes

1. Name: Eran Yearban

3. Occupation/job: Drone Operator
4. Weapon: An automatic SMG for personal defense. He also carries a laser knife for "just in case" situations.

5. Personality: Eran is more or less a little goofy. He has a "never takes anything serious" type of attitude and tries to make friends with most people. He is serious from time to time, but only when the time need be. Though he has a "slacker" outlook, he is a hard worker when presented with things that interest him.

6. Bio: Eran was the son of a mechanic back on Earth. He helped his father build and repair things. What Eran mostly liked doing was the technical things that had to do with different robots, mechs, and drones. He loved programming them and piloting them, he thought of it more as a game than a job and quickly found work on board many large corporations. His interest built over a long period of time before he soon found out about the Aegis. He knows the ins and outs of most machinery and is very proficient in operating drones and unmanned mechs.

A harden man who puts on an easy going shell to ease interaction with others. Wild, slightly impulsive and looks to win a fight.

6. Bio:
Ed had seen his fair share of combat through his time with the military before contracts of various kinds, both legal and not so legal. Although he usually just sticks to the job requirement and nothing else. His reputation as a hired gun isn't that big but it pays well enough. When the Blackrose space corporation, Ed applied with the desire of exploring what was out there after so much fighting on familiar grounds rather than for the money. His application got through and now he is tasked with the protection of the expedition with people like Arizona.

Occupation: Soldier

Weapons: Louise's weapons are nothing out of the ordinary. A normal rifle and a normal laser knife in case she runs out of ammo. Both of them are at the standards for arms used by the other soldiers, no better, and no worse.

Personality: Let's try to take a minute and look past the fact that Louise is probably the most timid soldier in the history of the universe. She has a heart of pure gold and a shining case of selflessness. In fact, her only real strength as a soldier is that she'll dive face-first into danger if somebody's life is on the line. Rush out into the Edenian night, ignoring the -250 degree temperatures? Get between a wounded comrade and an aggressive Colossus? Even if she can't really handle a weapon so well, the people who know her know that they can count on Louise to buck up and save an ally in danger.

Bio: Louise grew up on Mars in a family of long-running French-descended soldiers, police, and other protectors. From a young age, her life was set out before her by General Pierre Bernadotte, leaving Louise unallowed to object or question her future military life. It took no genius to tell that she was unfit for the job, though. Couldn't hold a gun straight if you gave it to her that way, generally a coward, and altogether uncapable of holding her own on the battlefield at first glance. Still, Pierre Bernadotte was a name people respected, so there wasn't much saying no to him when he had Louise enlisted. In the hopes of either toughing her up or "tragically" losing her if it was impossible, Louise was chosen to be sent up to Eden.

edit: just a note on the Titan suits... There's going to be a limited supply (they're expensive) and they are prototypes, so getting them to function seamlessly is an engineers dream. but if they're running smoothly they'll be able to fight on equal footing with all but the biggest colossi (yes folks, colossus has a plural). oh and let's try not to have too many pilots, that makes the human side a lil too prepared...

Personality: Vance loves too explore ideas and alter machinery designs he doesn't apply these ideas when he is on a job however he does create these ideas at his workshop being an engineer he studied all manners of engineering varying from gun parts to spaceships, he always carries a black notebook which he has filled with drawings and blueprints, around people he will make idle talk when he is out on a job and has a positive attitude towards people and enjoys their company, when he's working on a personal project he is more secluded and secretive, he is a very curious person and if there was new parts or tech he would be first to it he is also a man with cunning he uses his wits and words to get stray shipments of parts or information on new tech being developed and he is one for strategy and enjoys making plans for rendezvous's with informants and makes them sometimes unnecessarily complicated, however he always has one

Bio: Vance was born on luna but his parents relocated to earth thinking it would be better for him, after he lost his parents in a train accident when he was 5 he was sent back to luna and was raised by his uncle who was a renowned ship builder and taught vance about ship components at a young age,in the accident only a handful survived in that handful where his only two friends through the tragic experience the three became friends relying on each-other during school, after they went their separate ways and finished collage vance became cunning and began taking an interest in a ominous group that everyone seemed to know nothing about the Blackrose corporation,Vance's first successful creation was a robotic snake which he has with him constantly he treats it as a living thing and refers to it as "Primus" he also tinkers and improves primus whenever he can, and both vance and his uncle passed screening and both were excited about seeing a new world however his uncle was hospitalized 1 month before departure and vance was forced to go without him and as his uncle promised to see him as soon as he got out of hospital
