Default [M] Monster Hunters International: New York Div. Chapter 1

Rated [M] Mature for blood, gore, language, violence, drugs, sexual scenarios and everything else that may give some readers nightmares.

“Evil Looms. Cowboy up. Kill it. Get Paid.”

-Mission Statement from the MHI Company Handbook

“....It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business…”

-Monster Hunter International, Larry Correia (Author)

Monster Hunter, International. MHI is a private, for-profit organization that collects paychecks for the removal of monsters. Primarily, they are paid by the US government through PUFF payments. A secondary income is derived from private organizations with monster problems. While it is tough to recruit without violating their non-disclosure permit, special individuals are often recruited after surviving attacks. Considered (at least by themselves) the premier group in the industry.

    …..the short story?....

They are Monster Bounty Hunters, and are the best at at.

    The Plot

New York has been seeing more activity as of the past year. Enough where the closest MHI teams are having trouble keeping the monster threats in check there and in their own region. Reports are coming back to MHI Headquarters in Alabama about werewolf and vampire attacks that are becoming more frequent in rural areas or in numbers found elsewhere.

After a team was brought in from Atlanta and most left needing hospitalization, if not a cremation, it was decided to that a team was needed to be established in the state of New York. Three experienced hunters that would make up part of this NY team, have recently come down to MHI Headquarters after over seeing the out fitting of the new base. To join the other team leaders from around the United States for the end of Newbie Training. Where after a few days of scouting the recruits. The Team Leaders would crowd into a conference room to wheel and deal over the soon to be graduates. New York having an edge up from the others just because of being a new team.

The newbies on the other hand, were focused on getting a MHI Hunter's Patch for their armor upon graduation. That is after 8 weeks of brutal training, mentally and physically, while testing their will to surpass anything thrown at them. Little did they know, these last 4 days would be the hardest ones yet.

Spoiler: MHI New York Division's Base

    Spoiler: MCB and PUFF

Getting paid is quite simple: After a mission, kills are counted up and charged via the PUFF chart. Unless pre-determined amount was set. From the total bounty awarded, it gets divided up first to MHI Business. (Got to keep going somehow) Then the rest is awarded to the team. (Individual kills are awarded solely to that team member instead of the team.)
--Note that this is just for general information the characters would already know from MHI Training.

Spoiler: Standard Issued and Specialized "Derp" Weapons

    Spoiler: MHI Issued Body Armor

Name: Genitaa (Genie for short) Klausner
    Age: 27
    Species: Human
Profession before MHI: Ski Patrol, Avalanche Emergency Response.
    Spoiler: Appearance:

Weapon: FN SCAR Assault Rifle, Remington 870 Shotgun, Beretta Pistols, Combat Knife.
    Armor Color: Black
    City/State came from: Vail, Colorado

How were you recruited to MHI- Gargoyle fight- Turns out on the day she went to Vail's Historical Theater, the stone gargoyles weren't just statues anymore. Dynamite works great in a pinch. MHI Denver immediately contacted her while she was in the ER for stitches that night.

Personality: Straight forward with a "no bullshit" attitude. She is all about the 'tough love' approach. Great charisma and people skills, she is sneaky in getting information out when one least expects it coming. Love for dynamite as it saved her life when we was Ski Patrol. A true "Snow Bunny".

Background: Immigrated to the United States at the age of 12 with her family from Sweden. She grew up in the Rocky Mountains at Vail as her parents owned one of the local ski shops in town. Her mother also being a teacher at the local college for French and Swiss. Her English is very good though she will always have an subtle accent. Genie got her US citizenship at the age of 20. Wanting to stay where as her siblings wished to go back to Switzerland soon as they graduated high school. Graduating college with a Master in Languages. She remained still up at the slopes as the snow was the best place ever for her.

Apart of the Ski Patrol for years with Certification in Explosives for dynamite use with Avalanches. Genie was happy for years until she went to the theature for a Christmas Ballet with her Parents. Though the screams at intermission told that all was not exactly normal. Well normal was tossed out the window when she saw a lone gargoyle, separated from the others of his kind. Trying to grab a meal from the theature's lobby having crashed through the roof. Short story? She was glad that she only had enough time that day to change in the employee locker room and bring her bag with. That had a few sticks of dynamite from when she had to respond early that morning to an emergency avalanche call. Luckier that she forget to put the extra sticks back in the lock case at work.

Now nearly 6 years later she was one of three Team Leaders accepting an invite to establish a new base in New York State. Having been there now for 5 months setting things up with help from the NYC division. Currently in Alabama at MHI Headquarters during the last few days of Newbie Training with the other two making up the NY division to have a say with Harbinger on who they'd get for the trip home.

    Name: Harvath Wolfthorn
    Age: 28
Species: Paragon - Peak human, augmented by a magical artifact.
    Profession before MHI: AWOL PMC
    Spoiler: Appearance

    Spoiler: Weapons

    Armor Color: Urban digital camo
    City/State came from: Anchorage, Alaska

How were you recruited to MHI- Upon Harvath's return to the United States, an MHI squad attempted to intercept him at the airport terminal. His use of the Hu-shen amulet had drawn their attention. He was finally subdued after a long and arduous chase, and was offered the opportunity to keep the amulet should he work for MHI. Otherwise, they would remove the amulet from him, one way or another.

Personality: Harvath's presence alone is one that commands respect, the bearing of a predator with a kind of primal charm. He is courageous, active, and self assured, hard pressed to be idle other than the short span of hours he requires sleep. Harvath has a tendency to be rash and passionate, which can sometimes spawn an ugly resistance to the authority of others. Bolstered by the supernatural power that roars through every fiber of his being, Harvath is fearless, blinded to dangers and often rushing headlong into territory where others would fear to tread. He does not do so with the brash bravado of a bull, but the practiced and lethal grace of an apex predator.

Background: Starting his armed service in the United States Marines, like so many naive and young patriots, Harvath opted out of a college education to take up a rifle for Uncle Sam. He fit well within the high-average demographic in most things, though his natural charisma and bearing made him potential leader material later on in his career, or at least he would have been.

Harvath's involvement in the Marines was short lived, though. The young soldier was ultimately broken in the Second Battle of Fallujah, where his platoon was scattered and he was taken prisoner. Subjected to the barbarism of the insurgent forces in Iraq for six months without rescue, he had given up hope of ever seeing home again. Shaped by his time as an insurgent prisoner, Harvath had become increasingly jaded and desensitized to death and the horrors of physical and psychological torment. On the eave of the day he was meant to be beheaded on camera, a team of Private Military Contractors swept in and razed the insurgent stronghold to the ground, extracting Harvath as the lone surviving prisoner. The PMC's commander was impressed by the young Marine's grit, and handed Harvath a business card before he was rushed to the corpsman for diagnosis and treatment.

With his request for discharge granted, Harvath left the Marines behind and joined up with the PMCs that saved his life, and started down a much more interesting, if not much darker, path on his life. Given access to a wider range of weaponry and gear without general military conduct or conventions to get in the way, Harvath developed into a brutal and efficient combatant. From 2005-2010, Harvath participated in a variety of missions, from playing suit-and-tie security at a bar mitzvah to raiding taliban weapon caches, he did it all, racking up a frightening body count along the way.

In 2012, he partook on a mission in Tibet, tasked by private Chinese businessman to vacate a particular village nestled in the peaks of Heng Shan Bei for the purposed of a 'archeological exposition'. Harvath's squad had not expected the violent repentance they got, and ultimately paid for it. The residents were savage, possibly even rabid. Whatever it was that they were on made them extremely strong, bare hands capable of tearing through kevlar. The combat took Harvath and his other PMCs completely by surprise, three men in the squad torn to ribbons before they could flick the safety off of their weapons. They were scattered by the ferocity of the attack, some men and women fled in hysteria, others crumbled into a quivering mass before the ravenous predators, but Harvath, so hardened by his experiences, withdrew with composure into the shadows. Fighting only when he had no other choice, he found himself at the central village of the shrine, quickly getting surrounded.

Approaching the altar nestled in the shrine, Harvath's hair stood on end, his body innately aware of the great power in the place around him. It was as if something had sunk hooks into Harvath, for no matter how hard he resisted, he was drawn to the altar, his hand taking hold of something that was icy cold to the touch, but at the same time filled him with a volcanic heat. A voice, deep and rumbling, echoed in Harvath's head.

"Destroy the seed of evil, or it will grow up to your ruin. What is the greatest evil?"

The response was sudden, lacking all thought. "When good men go to war." said Harvath, the fire spreading through his veins, turning his eyes into flickering pools of sapphire flame.

"Are you a good man?" asked the voice, shuddering with a powerful and etherial growl.

"No." Harvath replied. There was a snap of power, a magical tether bonding whatever the amulet was to Harvath. Somehow, it ended up around his neck, and he then lost all awareness in regard to the world around him. Everything became a smeared mess of color, sound, smell, and taste, a Pollock painting of the senses. For how long he remained in such a state, Harvath does not know, but after a time, there was darkness. In that darkness, there was silence. Peace.

The darkness receded to an ancient place, stones that whispered of ages before gunpowder and the airplane. Bars of rusted wrought iron caged Harvath. Despite the old appearance and ancient smell of the place, it was immaculately maintained. Harvath immediately focused on finding a route of escape, failing to notice that he was not alone until a gentle draft carried with it the gentle scents of incense. Seated in the shadows was a man of venerable age, wreathed in the grey-blue ribbons of incense smoke. The old man introduced himself only as Sifu, the master of the temple where Harvath was now being held. Sifu drew Harvath's attention to the amulet that now hung around his neck.

A Hu-Shen, it was called. One of many pieces, but one of the four most powerful, and one of the two most difficult to control. According to Sifu, the amulet was made from jade created from the essence of Bishu himself, the great white tiger spirit of the West. Bishu was a violent and ferocious god, one of feral and savage temperament, depicted as both benevolent and malicious throughout the ages. A creature of metal and fire, Bishu was one of the four aspects of the Shaolin and their chosen martial art. According to Sifu, only those of remarkable willpower can withstand the power of the Hu-Shen, which explained the savage nature of the people Harvath encountered. They had opened themselves to Bishu and the Tiger God had ravaged their minds and souls, twisting them to his will as punishment for their weakness. Harvath would not be permitted to leave the temple until he had proven his strength of mind, body, and spirit - his ability to resist the power of the Hu-Shen and control it, rather than let it control him. Every Shen amulet is a relic of great power, and one such as the Tiger or Dragon getting into the wrong hands would spell disaster for the civilized world.

Five seasons came and went, each day would begin with Harvath rising an hour before twilight to begin his trials. Each of them were specifically designed by the Sifu himself, to slowly crush Harvath under pressure. Not enough to break him, but enough to keep him on the dagger's edge of collapse, and like coal, Harvath would come through brighter, harder, and keener than ever before. Every week would grow more and more difficult by a staggering margin, pushing Harvath beyond his limitations, forcing him to adapt and evolve himself. Sifu and the other masters bestowed unto Harvath a distillation of their teachings, letting the ancient spirit of the Hu-Shen fill in the blanks. By the time of winter in the year 2013, Sifu deemed Harvath worthy to leave the Temple, if he so desired. It truly was a tough choice, but there was family and friends back in the United States that Harvath had not seen in a long time, and he wished to put their minds at ease.

Setting out on foot, Harvath took a series of small airplane flights, starting in Mongolia, and hopped his way back home. Upon landing in Dulles Internation Airport in Washington DC, a full squad of heavily armed troops awaited Harvath, their body armor printed with "MHI".
