Begin the legend here. "How should we be able to forget those ancient myths that are at the beginning of all peoples, the myths about dragons that at the last moment turn into princesses; perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us once beautiful and brave.
Perhaps everything terrible is in its deepest being something helpless that wants help from us."
~RAINER MARIA RILKE, Letters to a Young Poet
For as long as anyone can remember, dragons have ruled the lands. Perhaps they were here first, and only defend their home, or perhaps they have come to punish us from the evils of human decisions and trials; regardless, they are the bane of every village or house, any woman with child or man afoot in the forest, anywhere those mighty wings can reach. Their never-ending fire pours down from the sky onto wooden roofs, setting fields aflame and tossing fragile human bodies hundreds of feet into the air like fodder. Food stores burn to a crisp, leaving winters colder and less full than before. Young children go missing as they play in the meadows, with only a whisper of leathery-wings to ever have accounted for their existence. The roar from miles above sends people fleeing underground, in hopes of being spared from this reign of terror and fire. For as long as anyone can remember, hundreds upon thousands of dragons have ruled by fire and blood.
They have scales of every color. Some grow over centuries to be the size of a small castle, some hardly seem larger than a horse. Winds span to block the sun or seem to be non-existent at all. Most breathe fire straight from the shaking furies of hell, but some have rows within rows of teeth sharp enough that they would never be tempted to use their mighty weapon. Those without legs fly like an owl through the night, a demon on the wind, bodies coiled like servants, a silent monster. But those dragons with four legs, some even two, could land and run faster than any horse, using mighty trunks of muscles to tear down houses with a single fore-swipe, the ground cratering beneath their limbs.
There are bands of men who go about raising war with the dragons. Never has there been enough support from the people as a whole, maybe out of fear, for the Dragon Raiders to make a true and significant dent on the wild dragons. They specialize in sneaking into the dens that lay in hiding, putting knives and swords up the throats of young dragon-kin, while the scales were still soft. Occasionally, they found a wounded dragon from some mighty dragon fight and proceeded to murder it. More often than not, the Raiders could be found dragging these trophies to the village boasting of great fights and victory. In the recent years, the subtle victories of the Raiders have begun to spark a feeling of rebellion among the people. Several are joining the ranks, but the warnings from those in the sky have not been enough to stop their plans. The Raiders are fueling the fires of anger and hate in the dragons.
This is where the Legend of the Dragon Guardians begins.
The Legend would tell of a two men who spent their lives among the dragons. One made the drawings that would eventually be the foundation of all we know about all the winged creatures, the Book of Dragons. After fifty years among the dragon-kin, there was one elder dragon who had faith in one of the men, in his dream of stopping these wars between man and beast. Together they flew, speaking without words and with no hesitation between them, for there was instantly a connection beyond love between them. As she grew old and he grew wise, they decided there would be other humans, the humans who could begin generations of riders, who would done as they had done, become one, and make peace. They ventured from the land beyond the mountains, her with her seven fledgling dragons, only just beginning to stretch their young wings to reach the heavens, him with high hopes and faith. In secret, the trio roamed the lands, looking for those that the young ones would connect to, their Heart-String companions. They would spend nearly a year searching for the seven who would make their life's work and forever dreams a reality. Those that would stop the Age of the Dragon Raids, on human and dragon sides alike. They would make a peace that had never existed.
They would be the partners of dragons. The guardians. The kin and blood of dragon. These chosen beings would be Dragon-Riders.
Spoiler: About the Lands
Humans arrived by ship into what is now know as Port Jasper, part of what would come to be known as Celestra. Celestra holds the highest human population, with most of the land farmed in small villages here and there, with several major cities. To the left of Celestra is Utwan, the second land colonized. Armaretto stands as the largest city, governing all seperate regions of land. The Council stands in Armaretto. Beyond these two lands are less populated regions, due to the heavy population and attacks by the dragons. To the west of Chucagk mountains is Dragonia, where the Dragons claimed their home land against the humans in the first dragon age. Some people hold strong in the fortress that is Valenor, or spend their lives hiding in the Coldwind forest. In the Swamps of Misery, the gentlest of folk live, covered in mud and weeds to hide from the rare dragon. They live in the Swamps to be away from dragons and people.
But Rhulak and Oerk are the lands of the dragons. The mountains separating the breeding grounds and nests of the thousands of dragons undiscovered are called the Fence of God, the people believing that their god put that there to keep the dragons locked away from their home lands. Sadly for the people, any dragons that leave the regions never go back after growing up, due to some strange mystery.
Our hero's story will begin in the city of Astel, the shining white heavily fortified military castle defending the two main lands from dragons where the mountains break.
Spoiler: The Magic & Lore
Humans can use magic, but only with the assistance of some more powerful creature. Humans using magic is primarily found in those who have bonded with their dragons; the more powerful the bond and connection between the pair, the more the human can channel of the dragon's powers. Most powers include increasing eye sight, strength, healing, accuracy, power, language, etc.
The more the dragon's powers are used, the more altered the humans get. In many placed near the dragon-lands, the humans seem to have changed; some go insane, some develop pointed ears and strange beauty, some give birth to only still borns. The effects of uncontrolled dragon-power are unstudied and feared, though it is known that being near dragons for too long will render one insane and mad.
It is said there are special creatures, legends other than dragons that roam the land, but few have been found.
Spoiler: FAQ
How fast do Dragons grow?
Your dragons right now are decently large. They are all 2 years old. Dragons always grow, just slowly. The number on the left is their height on the ground standing on the ground for an average dragon, the number on their right is their wingspan. Both in feet. Some dragons stay small, some grow large. There is no max size for a dragon, just an intensely slow age of growth. After About 5 years, their growth slows remarkably, and continues so each year.
I use the 1:3+2 based on old dinosaur’s wingspans, which was roughly 1 ft height is 3ft wings + 2.
For the dragons who make it past their first ten years, their most dangerous, most dragons live about 200 years. The largest and most blessed dragons will live into their four to five hundreds. The oldest dragon known to have lived was 602.
How do Dragons talk to humans? Doesn’t the Prince try to talk to dragons?
Regarding Dragon talk, dragon's typically will never speak to humans. In fact, only those of the very highest or those taught by the riders can learn to project their thoughts through magic to humans. It's difficult and takes practice. Even then, the dragons will prefer to speak through their riders than speak to an outside-human. The Prince drinks dragon blood, which allows him brief access to dragon magic, though at a great cost to himself. The prince believes that there is a way to communicate with the dragons, a way that is not going to cause war; the prince is obsessed with finding a way to communicate and drinks blood in attempt to understand the dragons. The blood lets him understand a word or two, just enough to keep driving him forward at the goal of communicating and enough for others to ever so slightly doubt him. The general folk think dragons are useless predators... Imagine living in a world with T-Rexes.

Kiala is 5'5, weighing a light 116 lbs. She often braids the front of her hair to keep in out of her face, but rarely ever puts it entirely up. Her clothes are standard for the women of her status, though due to heavy traveling, she chooses to wear pants instead of a dress. She wears dark fitted pants, easy to move in but not loose, with high laced boots made for her as a gift. A intricately carved belt holds up her most esstential healing equipment, which she never intends to be far from, the corset a pale green, as near to white as green can be, though sometimes she doesn't wear it. A loose shirt can be found often unbuttoned, and rolled up as she rides. She has a soft cape with a hood that fastened on her left shoulder in a dark green.
The more time she spends with and around the dragons, the more distinct the delicate points on her ears get.
Spoiler: Clothing
Brief Personality: Kiala is an a sensitive and curious girl with a warrior's spirit. A strong sense of right and wrong lives within her, strong enough to blind her in her own feelings, though she does her best to see the world through someone else's eyes. She has never, in any of her memories, been in a rage or hardly angry at all, but her overwhelming compassion and deep feelings for others leave the dark possibility. She loves being outdoors, and gets very fidgety if asked to stay still or keep her mind focused on one thing for too long. Kiala is gentle and refined outside of conflict, showing as much patience as she can. When a fight begins, she does her best to stop it without any physical motions, seeing too much damage through human anger and the dragon wars, though she remains secure and confident inside situations that must call for conflict. Once engaged in a battle, she seeks only to end it in a way that causes as little damage as possible. Always positive and hopeful, soft and strong, realistic with the slightest sense of optimism, she seems to simply be at peace no matter where she is. The hardest thought for her to think of is being alone in the world or the battles of life.
Backstory: Kiala's father, Hammond, was a young man when his daughter was born. He was given the baby fresh from the mother's womb, to raise as his own, on his own. All he would ever tell Kiala when she pressed of her mother was that she loved her daughter. There was only one subject he would not sit and discuss with her to her heart's and never satiated minds' content, and that was the woman who gave birth to her. The fair blonde woman was raised traveling from village to village to offer medical services with her father. As she learned the healing arts that were all he had to offer to the world, Kiala saw the ruin dragons could do. One day, a village they had been to only a month ago, was left charred and burned, along with its people; the next day, the next city, it was children left with no skin and men with only one limb. Despite healing burns and making as many people as comfortable as she could, she never blamed the dragons for the raids, just as much as she never placed the glory on the raiders who would drag the carcasses of small dragons into the town squares.
This lifestyle, raised by a quiet gentle doctor, going where they felt they were needed and when, has left Kiala with her strong sense of self. She has never been challenged or injured, always protected and in the security of those around her. Despite his being around, Hammond insisted on her learning to defend herself, not from the beasts of the sky, but the "most threatening danger of all", the humans around us. She was taught hand to hand defense techniques, never attacking, always defending. Her weapon of choice, though she did her absolute best to never think of it as one, was a hand carved wooden staff, The young woman has traveled so much she had no friends but the two horses who draw the wagon and her Papa.

If you think that you are done with this life, that the pain is unbearable, then maybe it's time to give your life away to Jesus.

Appearance: For you Visual Thinkers Her Shape is Similar to This She is built for cutting through the air like few others her body long and slim with a deeply barreled chest, a whip-like tail, and an elongated neck and head making aerodynamic maneuvers come naturally to her (Once she's learned to Fly that is). A dual row of triangular flaps along her spine, made of the same material as her scales, increase her maneuverability along with the extended wing membrane that connects from the wing joint to the base of her tail. Her scales share the same iridescent rainbow of colors as white opals the base color gleaming like pearls, her eyes are a whirl of lavender and ice blue with slitted pupils, leaving the only dark spots on her body the delicately curved talons and thin spiraled horns which share the same onyx black color. She has four legs all slender and easily tucked against her bodice in flight, her long wings are separate from her forelimbs and each individual wing spans nearly the same length as her body, the edges are lined with spines where the bones run through the membrane to give it shape.
Personality: She cares for those she gets to know and becomes highly protective them, bordering occasionally on jealously aggressive. Her age makes her somewhat reckless though she will wisen up given time, rarely making the same mistake more than twice before she either asks for help or figures out a solution. She can be easily embarrassed and defensive at times but she is eager to learn new things given the chance.
Attack Propensity: Magic
Secondary Skill: Flying

Name: Gareth Wayne Gender: Male Age: 26 Appearance:
Spoiler: Gareth Wayne
With eyes that mirror pools of sapphire and hair as fiery as the sunrise,Gareth makes for an odd first impression. He stands at a fair 6' even and weighs 195 lbs. His body, from head to toe, is a visual map of the adventures and encounters he had while in dragon lands. Silvery lines criss and cross in an exotic art display, allowing his demeanor to look far more alien than other humans.
Brief Personality: A heart as golden as the scales of a dragon resides within the chest of Gareth. A look of mirth always alight in his eyes, and the hints of a smile always playing at the corners of his lips. He is a generally happy person, one that loves the land around him and the creatures that inhabit it. He has a healthy respect for the elderly and often times will help those in need. He is an adamant defender of dragons, and will be the first to stand up to a raider or amateur hunter. He believes that dragons are to be honored and respected - but more than that, they are to be left alone to their own ways. He believes that dragons do not wish to harm humans, but they will not hesitate to defend their own kind, and their young-lings.
Though he appears to be kind and soft, he can become a tempest of anger, if one pushes him to that point. His anger has always been his weakest flaw - always leading him into trouble more than out of it. His anger is what drives him to become the defender of dragons, but it is also when he is at his strongest.
Backstory: Hailing from Cimbre the Circle City, the last free human settlement in dragon-lands, Gareth has always seen the majesty of the the great beasts of the sky and earth, magic and mystery. Even as a child, his mother would tell him stories of the prowess of the dragons and their gifts, and the colors of their scales that shimmered in the light of the sun and moon, scales worth more than all the gems beneath the Earth. It was seeing their forms in the distance, great colored spots on the horizon, that brought about his admiration for these mighty creatures.
His mother, seeing the dangerous admiration her son had towards these devastating creatures, packed their things and left the Circle City. It was with a great sorrow that he followed his mother from their home in Cimbre to the over-populated Armaretto, a decision that still causes him sorrow to this day, for shortly after their arrival in Armaretto, he learned that the city had fallen to the dragons. It was not the only thing he lost that day, his father and grandparents were also within the city as the dragons fell upon it with a fiery vengeance.
His mother, in a deep despair and great desperation fell into a silent-state, and failed to provide for her only living child. Gareth was forced to find work in Armaretto and labored through the years doing various skills whether it be: smithing, tailoring, or even cooking. He did what he needed to ensure the survival of his mother and himself. It was his duty, and his privilege. She was his last living relation, and if he were to lose her, he would be alone.
And, as fate would will it, his mother succumbed to her grief and left him alone at the mere age of 19. His life would be difficult from this point forward. There was no work to be had in the city with the massive influx of refugees from the surrounding villages and townships. The dragons seemed to be fighting back against something, and his suspicions were proven when a group of weapon-clad armored men stalked into the city brandishing the body of a young dragon with its throat cut and wings sheared off. The sheer sight of the young dragon dead brought a rage within him that was nearly unbridled, one that would serve him well in his future.
He was arrested a few short days later for the murder of the group who had previously brought in the dragon corpse, and sentenced to death. This would not deter his mission - the cells held him for less than three hours before he had escaped and left the city to escape their "justice".
He traveled the wilds, for many grueling days, being forced to survive on what little he could until he reached The Swamp of Misery, where he was briefly taken in by a rag-tag group of villagers who made a living in the settlement of Riverbend. It was the closest thing he had felt to a family in many years, his family being taken from him by Fate and Dragons fire. He remained in Riverbend for 3 years, and upon the age of 23 he left for the Rhulak-Zagul, the land of the dragons. He held no resentment towards the creatures who had taken his family from him - he knew why they were attacking human settlements: The Raiders.
They were the source of the problem for dragons and human relations, and for the next three years, his life would be spent protecting the secret nests and lairs of the beasts. It was a short lived mission though, as whispers began to reach his ears of dragon sightings in Astel and the surrounding area. And, so he would leave dragon-lands, but not unchanged by the untamed magics that run freely in that land. His appearance would be forever altered by the creatures of legend; his ears taking on the likeness of daggers in their shape, and his eyes became pools of sapphire - rivaling that of dragons scales color. His movements would also become more graceful and agile, his body able to sustain itself without food weeks longer than the average human would be able to survive. Weapon Propensity: Knives Secondary Skill: Survival
Both accepted and Naraness, I reserved a spot for you.
We still need riders and 2 more dragons and someone wanting to play the instructor.

Dragon Name: Mamoru (Meaning Protector) Gender: Male
Spoiler: Appearance.
When he is younger, his back legs haven't developed, making him look like a snake with arms. Mamoru has small sharp horns, not nearly as big as when he is an adult, but still moderately sized. Think of something similar to this
Personality: Often by himself as he is somewhat uncontrollable. Overly protective and aggressive, he wants to have friends but his aggressive nature most times pushes people away. He can be inarticulate in expressing his emotions sometimes. This constant alone time makes Mamoru even more aggressive, even lashing out on his supposed friends. However, when understood and treated fairly, he is considerate, kind, and tame. Always very curious, putting him in somewhat dangerous situations. Being the oldest of his brothers and sisters, Mamoru is very intelligent, often getting himself out of the dangerous situations just as quickly as he got himself into them. Mamoru's anger often makes people biased against him, fearing him, and wanting him to be chased away.
