The Dragons of Pelinoir
I'm not entirely sure if this particular one belongs here or in fantasy, because it's post-apocalyptic but with some fantasy themes in it (namely dragons!) If it belongs somewhere else please move it there.
The lands were shattered. Jagged rocks jutted up in the sky like the crooked teeth of some fallen giant. In the wastes that remained of the great lands of Pelinoir, there were small gatherings of people. They were all that remained of the civilized world, and they were barely better than the savage bandits that roamed the land preying on the weak and the innocent. They often scorned those who left the safety of their broken hovels, and branded them "Wanderers", people who had no home, and no hope. There were several such bands, as there was strength in numbers.
It was in these times of darkness that a glimmer of hope remained brightly shining. A blacker than black rock oval shaped rock rested against the base of one of the jagged rocks. It was one of many scattered about to most, but to some, it was an object of salvation. One particular band, dubbed the Extraxi, collected rocks that took that shape, and often had their children touch these rocks. It was their belief that one day, a child would be born who touched one of these rocks and lead the lands back into their former glory.
They were correct.
A child was born who touched the stone and awakened what was inside. This child was born to a small village named Khvaril. His name was Korrux, and he was the first Dragon of Pelinoir. The Extraxi had heard of Khvaril's child, and immediately began to head that way. Upon arrival, they discovered the village in ashes, and a massive black dragon resting nearby, unharmed. The Extraxi were terrified of the dragon, and wished to kill it in its sleep. The beast awoke when the arrows rebounded off of his thick scales, and the Extraxi fled. The beast fell asleep, and the boy, Korrux, who was merely a teenager at the time, awoke terrified by what he saw. His village was in ruins, and he did not know why. He soon discovered a black scale had grown over the back of his neck, and this terrified him. Where did it come from? In time he learned that he had Awakened his Dragon Spirit. He is now searching for others with the Dragon Spirit.
