Although on the surface he looks calm as he placed the apple on top of his head, Stephen's thoughts went from why-are-we-putting-apples-on-our-heads? to are-you-freaking-mental?! at light-speed. Chris is asking a 15 year old girl to shoot the apples off their heads from a hundred yards with a freaking rifle sniper designed to kill enhanced beings. Stephen was expecting a training exercise, but this is too risky even for Guardian's standards. This is a freaking execution. Did the superiors even authorize Chris' exercise? Because if they did, they're more crazier than he thought they already are.

But maybe... maybe Avery won't miss. If she was chosen for a task force at such a young age while training, then maybe she is a damn good sniper who's capable of shooting a small apple off someone's head without killing them. Plus, Chris is probably a reasonable man. He just got this squad, he wouldn't risk his squad's lives just to prove an individual's skill.... right?

Just when the thought was about to comfort him, he heard Chris mutter "..for the love of God, don't miss...". Stephen's eyes flung open. You're not sure about this too?!

Earnest certainty withered away to a stoic mask-Avery's equivalent for pure terror-as the CO went off on another spiel. The fear was entirely irrational, harboring no doubt in her abilities. It was not due to cockiness, but rather the fact that she practiced every other day with all sorts of distances so that she would not make a rookie's mistake. Her aim was true.

But why should she be the first victim of team-building? Her, the least trustworthy of everyone as the only agent with red staining her name? It anything, she would not blame him for fearing she might turn her back and kill the new team on the spot. He was not just risking his position and his squad, but he was risking the lives of everybody in the vicinity. Even she was questioning his decision right then...

Just as the confusion was about to break through to the surface, she caught the sight of Quinn. Green apple balanced a little too far left on his head, he stood to the side, completely at peace. He was trying to ease everyone's tension with his own calmness, Avery realized. She hefted the rifle to her shoulder with a toothy grin. There was nothing to be afraid of.

"Just that far? What, do you want me to do a little dance at the same time?" she hollered, doing a little shimmy and laughing. With the distance between her and the others, any remark they might have made went unheard by her part, and she was prepared to crack another joke until Quinn yelled out for her to hear:

"Make the shot before I take off tis apple and throw it at you!"

The response Avery made was instant and instinctive. "If you're gonna be a brat, then I'll shoot you first!" She didn't even bother to crouch down, only needing to make five easy shots. "Following with the Good Doctor, Demolition Girl, Field Agent, and the Bossman! So be ready!" No sooner had the words left her mouth, she cringed. She really needed better nicknaming skills. A disapproving frown Quinn was probably making itself at home on his face.

Taking aim, Avery was forced back only four inches when she knocked the fruit straight from Quinn's head with a bullet. He looked back at the spot the apple hit on the floor and held out a thumb in the air. Perfect shot, as usual.

Quick work was made of the rest of the targets, and it only occurred to her once she was finished that she needed to clean up the mess she had made.

Ravenna wasn't all that surprised about the commanding officer's decision, it just made her think he was as crazy as she thought he was but she'll follow orders. Putting the apple on her head she could see how freaked out Stephen was but how oddly calm Quinn was giving off mixed signals for her to pick up on. Though she wondered what could of possibly made him make such a rash decision to start off with so early and what kind of crazy idea did he have waiting in the wings to test everyone else. "Going on faith," she said softly not sure if anyone could hear her. Before Ravenna let her thoughts get any further away from her while she did her best to focus on the task at hand, staying still so the bullet hits the apple instead of anything else though she was still nervously clenching her fists.

'Well I guess it's a fair trade considering if their lives were on the line then she had to be up to the task just like if someone was going to kill me I would hope Avery would save my life,' Ravenna thought to herself as the apple was shot off her head. She took a deep breath of relief to see Avery was successful and no one had a bullet in her head. Her hands fell loosely at her sides wondering what would possibly be next on the commander's agenda to bring the squad together.

Once Commander Peterson pulled the apple out of the bag and handed Avery the sniper rifle--a gun that was meant to take down Enhanced with one precise shot--Celeste had an idea where his mind was. And she didn't like it. As if reading her thoughts--and more than likely everyone else--Commander Peterson turned around and gave a little speech with the basic underlining message that actions speak louder than words.

At least that was something that could be agreed on.

With one fluid movement, Celeste pushed herself off the wall and followed the team down the shooting gallery. Arriving at the 100 mark Peterson then instructed the team to place the apples on their heads. The urge to flat out resist was overwhelmed by the years of training that had been installed. Taking the place next to Corvinus, the apple was then balanced on the center of the head. If anyone had been paying close enough attention, then they would have seen the tension building in her muscles and shoulders. There was no way she wanted to do this. But orders were orders.

Peterson's voice then echoes through the training hall as he commanded Swift to start. The girl responded, but it was hard to make out due to the distance. Celeste didn't even get to blink before the sound of a round went off, and the four more following it. During the process, the apple that had been resting peacefully on top of the light brown hair was sudden removed and splattered against the back of the wall. After the sound of firing stopped a quick glance was taken down the line. Everyone was still standing. Looks like Swift had been successful. Despite that Celeste could still feel the doubt lingering in the back of her mind.

What's next? Celeste thought, bringing a semi-cautious gaze back toward the Commander. Or maybe I should be asking who?

As soon as the apple fell from his head from the impact of the bullet, Stephen took a huge breath of the air he thought he would never breath in again. With legs still wobbly, he turned and looked at the apple behind him. He can still see the hole the bullet made as it passed through it. It looks like it went through the apple at it's center. And that was at 100 yards, Stephen thought in awe. He began to appreciate Avery's skill, knowing she'd be an excellent addition to the squad.

Even though everything went well, Stephen still felt like breaking his Commander's jaw. He understands that Chris' reason for doing this exercise was to get us trust each other and it's damned right working. However, that wouldn't change the fact that he just risked his teammates lives for a simple training exercise. Stephen braced himself for what's about to come next.

As soon as she flicked the safety back, Avery ran straight to Quinn, practically hiding behind his taller frame. She could not allow to show how shaken she was, not for her shooting but for the reactions of the others. As far as she could tell, Quinn was the only one to respond positively. Everyone else appeared more relieved that they were still standing. Once the adrenaline faded, would they be angry that she took Peterson's order?

As if he knew what she was thinking-and he probably could-Quinn reached back to pat her shoulder for comfort. "You did well. And I think you've just made an ally out of yourself with that stunt o' yours," he said as he observed the body language of their coworkers. Knowing him, he was seeing far more than what she observed. Although Avery's eyesight was impeccable, Quinn's talents always lied in finding the meanings behind the sights, sounds, and smells he took in.

Just her own heartbeat had begun to settle down, another realization made it jump yet again. Peterson was not through with them. Her wary eyes fell on the commander, similar to everyone else.

"Commander-Sir... With all due respect... If we're doing more of these weird 'bonding sessions,' then I think I speak for all of us when I suggest that you'd better go next," she piped, figuring that the snark in her tone was well-deserved after being told to fire at the people she was supposed to protect.

Chris could feel the uneasiness. He'd expected this. When you ask a team to put their lives on the line for no apparent reason it makes sense that they'd be a little pissed. All eyes were falling on him, as they nervously anticipated his next move. Then Avery spoke up, and he listened intently.

“Nice shooting by the way Swift,” the team leader said, about to pat her on the shoulder before deciding she didn't seem like a person who liked being touched, “And you have every right to ask me to take the next “bonding exercise”. Here's the thing, you're a sniper so I asked you to shoot. When we're in the field this team needs to know that you can make the shot. I forced them to put their lives in your hands and you delivered. You earned their trust and their respect, because you proved that you could do your job.

“My job as your CO is to lead you, to make the right call when your lives are on the line, to understand your strengths and weaknesses and to design a plan that plays to those, to know when to fight and when to withdraw, to know our enemy, and most importantly, my job, at the end of the day, is to make sure that I get you all back in one piece. That's my job, and just as you need to know that Swift can make a critical shot under pressure, you need to know that I can make a life and death call when the time comes. So the question is, what do you want me to do?”

    "Ryan Winchester?"

The seventeen year old looked up at the officer in his doorway, never ceasing in the act of sharpening one of his many knives he carried at all times. Silent observation told him that the man sent for him was a messenger from the higher ups among the Guardian Project, rather than one of the instructors. The news would be of great import, and unless he identified himself as the person the officer was looking for, he wouldn't get any information out of the man.

    "Yes sir."

"Peterson requested your selection for the Echo Squad. They met about an hour ago, you can meet them down in the shooting range."

Ryan raised an eyebrow. "Why wasn't I informed before the meeting, sir?"

The officer shrugged. "The request had to be processed, and there was some discussion as to whether or not to allow it; some believed you more of an asset as an independent recon unit. Regardless, they're at the range. You are to report there immediately."

A few minutes later he walked into the range, spotting a group of teens like himself in various ages around Chris Peterson, a friend that had managed to worm his way to acquiring his trust, as well as being the one to nickname him "Wraith" after watching him dispatching multiple other classmates brutally in a training exercise without being spotted. He stayed back, not interrupting the proceedings as he reached into the pocket of his leather jacket and withdrew an apple that he proceeded to take a bite out of until addressed.

"What do you want to do?"

If Celeste had to name a reason as to why she chose to work with demolitions this would be a perfect demonstration. People were complicated. Their actions and words could be interpreted with two, or even more, completely different meanings. Bombs weren't like that. They didn't ask questions, they didn't have body language. They just sit there until they're told what to do and when to do it. Wether that be going up in flames or whatever else happens to be inside the container.

Suddenly, there was movement out of the corner of her vision. The attention that had been once focused on Commander Peterson shifted to the new person patiently standing just inside the doorway of the shooting range. The light brown gently swayed due to the movement. Could could he be a new teammember? Brifly thinking about it she came to the conclusiong that it could just one of the reasons that he was here; although it was the mostly likely one. Clearing her throat, Celeste mentioned toward the stranger indifferently, "We have company."

Chris looked over his shoulder and smiled. When he had first got word that he was going to head up a special unit, his first order of business was to put in a special request for someone who knew to be the best in his field. Chris had known Ryan for a long time, they had grown up together. He wasn't an easy guy to befriend, a loner for the most part in fact, but training side by side for the majority of their lives had formed a bond.

“Well it's about time,” Chris said, moving over to his friend and slapping him on the back, “How you doing Wraith? It's good to have you here man, I'm glad Command finally came around to see things my way.” Chris turned to face the rest of the team.

“Everyone this is Ryan Winchester, the best damn infiltration specialist you'll ever meet. Trust me when I tell you that this team is a hell of a lot better off with him on it. Wraith, anything you want to tell the troops? Oh, and Swift, I haven't forgotten about what you said.”
