You may be wondering right now, what is Divinity and what are Purviews? Well, they are quite simple to be honest. Divinity is your measure of Divine Ichor within your body. It makes you immortal, and it is what fuels your abilities. It begins at 5% and has a maximum of 100%. Your actions in the world will help increase or decrease this number, as determined by the GM. But what does it do? Well, it determined how close you are ascending fully to godhood. Once a character reaches 100% Divinity, they have achieved everything they can and now ascend to become full-fledged deities. It also helps to determined how powerful your Divine abilities are.
Each character can have up to four Purviews, which must be chosen at start. Once your Purviews are chosen, you then divide your Divinity between them. This represents how much of your Divine Ichor is attributed to each Purview. The higher the number, the more powerful your Purview is. After this is done, you then choose a single Ability for each Purview. They MUST be related to your Purview in some way. They have the same % as the Purview they are associated with.
For Example: Let’s say Bob makes a character. He chooses three Purviews; Strength, War, and Music. He starts with 5% Divinity, and must divide them up between his three Purviews. He decides to put 2% into Strength, 1% into War, and 2% into Music. He then must choose three Abilities. One for each Purview. He chooses Super Strength for Strength, Incite Rage for War, and Battle Song for Music. Since Super Strength is based on the Strength Purview, it is at 2%. Incite War is based on War, and thus has 1%. Battle Song is based on Music, and thus has 2%.
Now let’s say he is in a wrestling competition with Jose, who has 3% Super Strength. He has 1% less than Jose, and thus is slightly weaker. If both were matched in Strength, it would more than likely be a draw. This isn’t to say he has no way of winning, as clever strategy and adept world play will generally get your further than just relying on sheer numbers. The more you struggle, the more you excel.
Whenever a character gains another % of Divinity, they allocate it to their Purviews just as they did at character creation, which further improves their Abilities. And as a Purview grows more powerful, that character may find new Abilities developing. When a character gets to 25% in a single Purview, they learn another Ability associated with that purview. It always has the same % as the rest of the Abilities associated with that Purview. The player gains another Ability at 50% and 75%, for a maximum of four Abilities in a single Purview.
Note: You will never lose Abilities for a % penalty, though they will be less powerful.
And that’s Divinity, Purviews, and Powers in a nutshell.
