The Empress pardoned them for their help against Kali-Ma. The Empire would be destroyed without them. They helped because they were loyal to Daigotsu and Fu Leng. After the war, Daigotsu ascended to become the Lord of Jigoku. He made the Taint less severe, too. But the Spider do work for Jigoku, spreading Taint and plague when they can. They are a family of samurai. It would be super dishonorable to go back on a bargain, especially since the Empress is a representation of Tengoku, the Celestial Realm, which is the embodiment of Bushido.

Legend of the Five Rings was also the "featured campaign setting" of the Oriental Adventures expansion to the third edition of Dungeons & Dragons, but this book and the line of L5R material based upon it is now out of print.

Must kitsune tuck it in somewhere. Anyone with high spirit (such as a medium) will be able to sense it still, though.

I have the conversion guide for L5R 3rd Edition to D&D 3.5. I also have the conversion guide for D&D 3.5 to Pathfinder. And it is quite simple to convert L5R 3rd Edition to L5R 4th Edition. So yes, you can mix them all to your heart's content. I could probably also convert D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder to L5R 4th Edition, but that might be a little harder.
