'Should you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.'
Spoiler: Recent History1994
The asteroid 1994XF04 was discovered by astronomers of both the Shellsbridge and Comona Universities on the continent of Usea. The Federation of Central Usea was informed of their findings, which indicated that the asteroid had a diameter of 1.6 kilometers and moved on a trajectory which bore a high probability of collision with Earth. It was speculated that the asteroid, dubbed Ulysses, would pass through the Roche limit on July 3, 1999 at 15:30 Usean Standard Time, likely to split into dozens of fragments which would strike the Earth across the northern hemisphere with the force of hundreds of nuclear detonations. Nuclear winter seemed to be the most likely positive outcome of the event, if not outright extinction. The FCU elects to withhold this information from the general public and the international community for political considerations.
1995
Following a lengthy and extensive economic crisis that cost the Belkan Principality billions in losses and great swathes of its territory, the Fatherland and Workers Party seizes power, embarking on a campaign of remilitarization that culminates in the Belkan War, as Waldemarr Rald sought to regain the mineral-rich territories of the Belkan breakaway republics. A titanic and devastating conflict, the Belkan War saw the involvement not only of the Osean Federation but also their rival, the Union of Yuktobanian Republics, a cooperative effort that would lead to detente between the two superpowers. By June the war had officially ended, but the rogue force known as A World With No Boundaries rekindled the flame of war in December, the apocalyptic organization seeking to utilize several of Belka's weapons of mass destruction to exact vengeance on the allied powers, an effort ultimately halted by the mercenary known as Cipher.
1996
Following the cessation of hostilities in the Belkan War, the superpowers of Osea and Yuktobania sought detente through what became known as the Yuktobanian Peace Treaty, ending the state of cold war that had existed between their nations, and leaving vast quantities of armaments and martial equipment to gather dust around the world. On April 20th, the Federation of Central Usea revealed the existence of Ulysses to the world, prompting the development of various anti-asteroid weapon systems, including Usea's 'Stonehenge' and Estovakia's 'Chandelier' railgun networks. Emmeria and other northern nations began on enacting disaster contingency plans, preparing refugee camps and evacuating areas they believed most likely to be hit.
1999
On April 3rd 1999 Ulysses entered earth's atmosphere as predicted, and dissolved into thousands of fragments that rained across the northern hemisphere. Usea's Stonehenge network fought admirably, but was not able to destroy all the fragments falling on the Usean continent, much less Anea. With the Chandelier network unfinished, Estovakia was at the mercy of Ulysses, and took the brunt of Anea's Ulysses fragments. Hundreds of thousands were dead, millions displaced, and untold billions lost as Estovakia's economy crumbled under the devastation wrought by the asteroid. Immediately Emmeria, Nordennavvic and other nations embarked on relief efforts, but they were unable to staunch the tide of despair and human misery brought in Ulysses' wake.
2000
The Socialist Federal Republic of Estovakia effectively dissolves between the lack of international support from its Yuktobanian allies following the cessation of the Cold War and the physical devastation of the 1994XF04 landfall. The remnants of the Estovakian National Army declare martial law in an effort to reestablish law and order, and large-scale aid programs begin to flow from the neighboring Republic of Emmeria. Military governments are established in the former Socialist Federal Republics and Semi-Autonomous Provinces, low-intensity skirmishes and warlordism runs rampant in the Estovakian territories.
2005
Central authority is reestablished under an interim 'Emergency Council' headed by a faction soon known as the Lyes United Front, a bloc formed in the wake of General Damjan Lyes bloodless coup. Lyes, partly Emmerian by way of his father, pursues a policy of close cooperation with their western neighbor, ensuring that a steady flow of relief supplies and aid flows to Estovakia.
2006
After months of back-channel negotiations deals, General Lyes secures an undocumented agreement between his government and the Emmerian Republic, exchanging vast portions of Granica and several of the southern Zemzaljan Isles in return for official recognition of the LUF government, Emmerian equipment and martial support. Tensions amongst the orthodox, pagan and socialist populations rises as Lyes grows closer to his Emmerian allies. Following the decimation of their republic's territory, citizens in Lozna, the capital of the former Socialist Republic of Granica, take to the streets in demonstrations. Lyes deploys civil defense to put down the riots, leading to sixty dead and hundreds more wounded. In response to the brutal crackdown in Lozna, the Semi-Autonomous Province of Gurza declares independence from Lyes' government, and the Posavina Territorial Defense Forces proceed to invade the rogue territory, laying siege to its capital of Gledina.
2007
During the Winter of 2007, aid and relief supplies are withheld from the city of Gledina as its governing council has refused all demands of surrender, stubbornly resisting Lyes' forces. More than two-hundred thousand civilians perish from squalor, disease and exposure. General Gustav Dvornik, military governor of the former Republic of Vukovar, also declares independence from the Lyes government in April. In short order Dvornik's 'Eastern Faction' is followed by parties opposed both to Dvornik and Lyes - the socialist Island Coalition, the Osean-backed Independent Tariff Federation, and the nativist National Highland Alliance. What began as a patchwork revolt against the increasingly tyrannical Damjan Lyes soon evolved into a full-scale, five-way civil war. Initially outgunned and crippled by mass-desertion, the Lyes United Front strikes back in the autumn of 2007 against the ITF and Dvornists, pushing both back.
2008
Following another frigid northern winter, the war rages on as the international community enacts a rather soft weapons embargo on the Estovakian Civil War, a measure conveniently ignored by major global powers and sidestepped by clever gun-runners. With their western border with Emmeria secure and Gracemeria's blessing, Lyes' government wages a four front war across the breadth of the Estovakian heartland, and eventually gains the upper hand, despite the defensive terrain of the northern highlands and the tenacious defense of the Dvornists and ITF. With most of the navy in their possession, the Island Coalition proceeds to harass their competitors and intercept several arms shipments from Osea, easily securing the backing of Prime Minister Nikanor and the Yuktobanian Republics.
2009
Following consistent LUF victories and the harassment of both the NHA and the Island Coalition, Dvornik's Eastern Faction soon becomes the weakest of the various struggling powers in the Estovakian Civil War, despite the valor of the men and women who fight for his cause. The Eastern Faction grows weary, spending exhaustive amounts and paying exorbitant prices to keep its forces in fighting shape, but only in August of this year has the Dvornist high command authorized what some among their number call a desperate gamble, the formation of a foreign legion. On paper they are the 19th Aviation Regiment, 22nd Tactical Fighter Squadron, but to the men and women of Kavadar AFB they are Orlok Flight, the unsung aces of the Estovakian Civil War.
Spoiler: The Setting
The Unsung Aces is set in the fictional world of Ace Combat, commonly referred to in the community as Strangereal(or StrangeReal), specifically during the Estovakian Civil War of 2007-2013. Our characters will be flying on behalf of General Dvornik's 'Eastern Faction', in what will be known as the Estovakian Foreign Legion, specifically the 19th Aviation Regiment, 22nd Tactical Fighter Squadron. Here you can find information on the various factions involved in the Estovakian Civil War.
Spoiler: The Lyes United Front
Easily the most powerful of the various factions waging war for control of the former SFRE, the Lyes United Front is a coalition of various civilian legislatures united under the principles of the free-market and democratic government, at least on paper. In reality the LUF is a martial bloc dominated by the demagogue Damjan Lyes and kept afloat by ultra-nationalist Catholic sentiment, heavily supported internationally by the Republic of Emmeria and her allies, both financial and religious. While they lost a greal deal of manpower and backing in the months following Gledina, they have easily recouped their losses through the flow of volunteers from abroad and some of the most advanced hardware sported in the theater, courtesy of their many allies.
In the waning summer of 2009, the Lyes United Front is focused, as it always has been, on the prizes of Gledina and the southern republics of Zemzalja and Vakonia, both of which remain firmly in the Independent Tariff Federation’s hands, and it’s no real surprise that such is where one will find the most intense fighting of the Estovakian Civil War as the lion’s share of the LUF’s forces attempt to bludgeon their way into the fertile heartland of the ITF. Against such lesser powers as the Northern Highlands Alliance and Dvornik’s ‘nationalist front’ the LUF spares the bare minimum needed to keep them engaged and distracted as they whittle each other down, expecting to sweep in with their veterans from the southern front once the ITF has been subdued.

The Federal Estovakian Air Defense Forces
Just as the Lyes United Front is considered by many to be the premier bloc in the Estovakian Civil War, so is their aerial force held in equal regard, and for good reason. Boasting some of the finest planes in the theater, the FEADF can consistently field the latest in aviation technology consistently, unlike their opponents, wherever they see fit. Their continued and frenzied assault on the southern bastions of the Independent Trade Federation have yielded both brutal aerial engagements and massive casualties, leading to only the finest pilots surviving to train the newcomers, be they volunteers from the Posavinan heartland or international ‘volunteers’, a deadly thing to pair alongside the hundreds of advisors coming from abroad to fly for the LUF.
Easily the most dangerous air force of all the warring factions, any engagement with the FEADF is not to be taken lightly.
Spoiler: The Independent Tariff Federation
While neither the first faction to emerge after the Gledina incident or the foremost power in the civil war, the Independent Tariff Federation is not a force to be underestimated. Modeling themselves after the Osean Federation, the ITF is a direct counter to the Lyes United Front, a heavily Orthodox faction that espouses much of the same beliefs in free-trade and representative democracy, albeit trading the LUF’s Catholic spin for their own vitriolic Orthodox sentiment. Despite their respectable international backing, the ITF is perhaps the largest force in the Estovakian Civil War that can be called ‘domestic’, as their martial forces are dominated far more by their own countrymen than international volunteers or foreign advisors, though these elements are still present, albeit typically more politically than religiously motivated.
With the Island Coalition securing a vast portion of the former SFRE’s navy, the ITF has been fighting a desperate two front war against both the IC and the LUF, a dangerous balancing act where even the slightest miscalculation can result in defeat. With the majority of their military deployed to the north to hold off the LUF’s might, only rear-guards and reservists are left to fend off the Island Coalition and their harassing attacks, leaving the IC in quite the keen position to exploit the ITF and attain some of the industrial capacity and capital so desperately needed to keep their fleet, and by extension their war effort, afloat. The ITF sees this conflict as a delaying action in all regards, as they lack the capacity to go on the offensive after their initial pushes into Posavina were crushed in 2008, a bid for time until the international community, namely Osea, can recognize their government and intervene properly.

The Independent Estovakian Air Corps
The second-rate aerial power in the Estovakian theater, the IEAC is a competent and viable force, not to be under estimated simply because they are the runner up. A close second to the FEADF, the IEAC is one half of a two part machine that has kept the ITF from crumbling under the onslaught of the Lyes United Front, working tirelessly alongside the Independent Estovakian Armies to hold the northern front. Often fielding aircraft as advanced as the FEADF, the IEAC shares the Lyes’ forces strength through elimination, the dramatic and often apocalyptic battles over the southern front leaving only the strongest alive. Such survival of the fittest paired with a hardened determination to defend their faith and their homeland has imbued the IEAC with a fury the likes of which have been unmatched across the globe since the dark days of the Belkan War.
While not the strongest, the IEAC counts fearsome pilots and deadly aces among their number, a determined and nearly fanatical force to overcome.
Spoiler: The Island Coalition
An echo of an earlier time, the Island Coalition hearkens back to what many now look upon as a golden age, the era of the Socialist Federal Republic of Estovakia, before Ulysses. While not the most successful state, the rose-tinted lens of the past has leant a merciful air to the SFRE, and it’s the nostalgia of such a time and a promise of its return that drives much of the nationalist sentiment among the ranks of the Island Coalition. An undeniably socialist, and arguably communist, faction, the Island Coalition is the smallest faction in terms of territory held, but that is not to be mistaken for a lack of capability. In the opening months of the civil war, in the immediate aftermath of Gledina, the Island Coalition swung a vast majority of the former SFRE’s fleet into its camp, and it’s that mighty fleet with which they use to project their machinations across much of the theater. Now the dominant power in the east, only challenged slightly by the largely dormant Dvornists, the Island Coalition is poised to strike in any direction, and at any time.
For most of the war the Island Coalition has focused its efforts on harassing the logistical means of its opponents, all four of the opposing factions having felt its sting as their submarines send thousands of tons of material aid and support to the bottom of the sea and its destroyers strike countless transports from the sky. What definite martial action the Island Coalition has pursued has been at the expense of the Northern Highlands Alliance and the Independent Trade Federation, occupying and taking the Semi-Autonomous Province of Golitok from the former and beginning an offensive campaign against the latter to bring Estovakia’s largest island, Zetavina, into their fold.

The Estovakian Naval Air Arm
While a misnomer now, the Estovakian Naval Air Arm initially formed the basis for the Island Coalition’s air power, and even today, with the material support of the Yuktobanian-aligned powers and burgeoning land-based aerial contingents, their naval aviation is the core of their strength. Able to strike at any target along the eastern seaboard from their fleet, the carrier air groups of the Island Coalition are worthy of respect and cautious regard. While not as favored by international aid as the Lyes United Front or the Independent Trade Federation, and not as fanatical as the IEAC or the pilots of the Northern Highland Alliance, they are a battle-hardened force, as mobile as they are versatile.
From the open ocean to the littoral coast, the sky is not safe from the forces of the Island Coalition, and if given the chance to expand to the south, soon even the safety of the inland ranges will prove no obstacle to the fleet air arm.
Spoiler: The Northern Highlands Alliance
Perhaps the most sympathetic of all the factions involved in the Estovakian Civil War, it might not be coincidence that it was the last to declare itself independent from the Lyes regime. A coalition of Orthodox and Pagan Estovakians in the far north of the nation, the Northern Highlands Alliance is a nativist bloc more intent on preserving their homeland and ways of life than enacting any political agenda on the grand scale. Tied with Dvornik’s nationalists for being the weakest faction involved in the war thus far, they have managed to preserve themselves through the naturally defensible terrain of Vojvodrina and the tenacity of their defenders. Without the international recognition of either global superpower, the NHA has to suffice with the meager support of minor powers on both the Osean and Verusean continents, who, while locked in sympathy for their plight, can do little more than dispatch material aid and petition the United Nations for intervention.
The Northern Highlands Alliance cannot claim any major offensive campaigns to their name, though their defensive operations countering the expansionist efforts of the Lyes United Front are worthy of note. At the best of time the NHA manages to harass and pester both the LUF and Dvornik’s Eastern Faction, drawing forces away from otherwise pivotal sectors and prolonging the already lengthy conflict.

The Allied Air Corps
The Allied Air Corps is a force that has long learned the value of the combat air patrol, having become the yet-undisputed masters of the skies above the northern ranges. A force with convictions strong enough to match those of the IEAC, the AAC knows that it flies to defend the homes and the families of the northern republic, and that knowledge drives them forward to challenge whatever invaders dare trespass in their skies with an unquestioning and stoic resolve. The Allied Air Corps is, perhaps more than any other faction’s air arm, a force devoted to the fighter and the interceptor, excelling in air to air combat, though this specialization comes at a price. What bombers that the Northern Highlands Alliance can still claim have not experienced the same success as their fighters, straying into the realm of their opponents and out from beyond the territory that their escorts know so well.
A desperate force, but dogged and determined, the Allied Air Corps is a viable opponent on their own turf, and, if underestimated, beyond.
Spoiler: The Eastern Faction
The first of the factions to break away from the Lyes regime to survive the winter of 2008, Dvornik’s Eastern Faction, or ‘nationalist front’ as it is known by its supporters, is a collection of various Estovakians who have banded together behind the military governor general Gustav Dvornik in a pan-Estovkian nationalist bloc. Dominated by no particular ideology or faith, the Eastern Faction is a bastion of reason amongst the sectarian violence that has consumed the nation, a port of solace in the storm. However, perhaps because of their lack of dogma, the Eastern Faction has suffered great losses in the initial years of the war, now pushed back into a corner in the former Republic of Vukovar, fighting a three-front defensive war against the Lyes United Front, Northern Highlands Alliance and the Island Coalition. While the NHA and Island Coalition are easily held at bay, still does the LUF push into the Eastern Faction, almost without check.
Unlike their opponents, the Dvornists can hardly claim any international support, with Verusa being the only power of note officially backing the nationalist front. However, unbeknownst to many, the beaten and battered Principality of Belka has unofficially proven to Dvornik’s greatest supporter on the international stage, funneling munitions, weapons, aircraft and more to the beleaguered Eastern Faction. Perhaps, between the support of Belka and and the people’s support of the just cause, they can survive until spring.

The Estovakian Air Force
Much like the AAC, the Estovakian Air Force is one of the two weakest powers currently contesting the skies above Estovakia. Between a shortage of international aid and new airframes, the EAF has to make do with what they can smuggle in from their few supporters abroad and what remains in the national armories, the forgotten assets of the Cold War that never went hot. However, what they lack in material capability they readily make up for with some of the finest Estovakian aces in the war, proudly boasting the men and women who would become Vampire and Strigon flight. A capable and versatile, if desperate, force, the Estovakian Air Force is eager to show their opponents that an animal cornered is twice as dangerous.

Spoiler: Rules1. All RPA rules apply, including those regarding Mature roleplays.
2. Common courtesy and basic roleplaying etiquette is expected of everyone, including but not limited to no autohitting, god-modding, metagaming, etc.
3. Please do your best to stay faithful to the Ace Combat universe. I know this is more of a guideline and less of a rule, and I'm already guilty of breaking this by including non-canon nations in the cultural/world map, but I felt that it added much needed diversity and depth to the world that was otherwise lacking. If you've an idea, plot, character, etc. that you're not sure will go against the grain or not, feel free to bounce it off me and we'll work from there.
4. As the primary GM of The Unsung Aces, it's my duty to make sure you all are not only having fun, but are invested and engaged in the RP. If there's anything keeping you from feeling welcome, participating or having fun, let me know and I'll do my best to resolve the issue.
5. Please stay as active as possible. I know, pot calling the kettle black here, but even if you don't manage an IC post, let us know OOC you're still around and interested. We can always leave pilots out of missions or have character and pilot rotations for certain segments of the storyline if need be - there's plenty of solutions if things come up, just let us know what the low-down is and we'll work around whatever issues arise.
6. Please strive to use proper spelling and grammar. Mistakes are fine, but consistently illegible posts are not fun to read.
7. Have fun and good hunting, Orlok Flight!
Hello and welcome to the OOC for Ace Combat - The Unsung Aces! This is my first non-persistent RP in a while so please bear with me, I've got to shake the rust off. As you might suspect, this is going to be a roleplay focused on the combat and exploits of the fighter pilots known as Orlok Flight, but just as important, if not more so, will be the down time between missions, the time taken for the pilots to get to know one another and understand who it is they share the skies with. So I would say it's a fair assumption that we'll be seeing plenty of both across the five acts that I have planned for the Unsung Aces - prepare accordingly!
I apologize for not having the faction details up yet, I plan on getting those together in the next couple of days. I also apologize for adding in some nations of my own creation to the cultural map, I figured it could round out the potential backgrounds for characters in the foreign legion should people want something more than the selection offered by the games.
So, without wasting any more time, let's get the Unsung Aces off the ground!
