    Default [M/IC] [Cfavano & Tiel]

Thalia, being just over twenty years old, was far above the general marriage age of women. Her mother had insisted that she not be sold off to the highest bidder, terminology that her father had objected to. But he had accepted that it was not her mother's wish and that those wishes were one he best listen to. Once her mother had died, and the mourning period was over, though, he had semi-gently but firmly informed her that she would be part of a new household come the new year. She'd protested as much as she could until he lost her temper with her and sentenced her to immediate marriage, to someone she'd never met and had never even heard of. It was, however, an advantageous marriage, so clearly that made everything okay.

Her brother Aether, at the age of twenty-four, was close to marrying himself. Unlike the lone remaining female of the family, he was free to choose as he wished. And she knew that it was her father's hope that he'd marry into a circle of equal or greater standard as she was, though she wasn't entirely sure that Aether had the same plans. They'd never been particularly close, almost friends more than family, due to their differing interests. But she got the feeling that he'd rather pursue a naval career than settle down with a woman. While she had no idea why he thought he'd do well at sea, being the child of an overseer at a brick kiln, he evidently had his heart set on it. Maybe her own marriage would soften things up.

And in the meantime, they were both unmarried. Her husband-to-be had claimed that business matters kept him too busy to leave in a town almost a hundred and fifty miles away. Rather than postpone the marriage for any reason, her father had offered to send her to him. Aether had insisted on being part of her escort, something she dearly appreciated, but it didn't soothe her very much. Oh, sure, send your only daughter off on days' journey through bandit territory and see what happened to her. It was most of the reason that her brother had insisted on coming along, she was pretty sure.

Leisure trip it was not, but at least they hadn't been in an unbearable hurry so far. They were accompanied by four guards, and a personal servant each, but were the only people not of the slave or freeman castes. Metic wasn't exactly the most desirable class, but Thalia knew that they could be far worse off. Her father had been generous in allowing her to wait so long without marriage. She was pretty sure that her age had been a bit of a blocking point with some people he'd approached regarding giving her hand away. At least one man had made several slightly rude inquiries as to her ensured virginity.

It was, honestly, probably to expected that the bandits would find them a desirable target. Her brother was on horseback, with his attendant on a mule, and she and her servant were in a wagon that also held their supplies. The four others were on foot, which was far from uncommon. But while they weren't some sort of trading caravan, they were clearly of a household that could afford to send them off in relative style. Even their guards had seemed to be taken by surprise when a dozen armed men had launched an attack.

At least they'd rallied quickly. Thalia had jumped down from the wagon, despite being nowhere as near ready to fight as her brother. She was armed with a dagger only thanks to his foresight. Her father had refused to consider arming her but her brother had seemed to know better. Most of the bandits focused on the wagon, but two of them clearly spotted her as being valuable. Her brother intercepted one, on horseback while his opponent was on foot, but the other got around the horse and grabbed her by the arm. Thalia stabbed at him and he released her with a howl of pain and anger before coming back at her.

Guts was travelling through a forest with his companions when he felt his brand twinge and his hand instinctively went to his sword. "Is it an apostle...?" Guts mouthed as his companions stopped. Puck looked worried. "Guts, what is it?" he said as a mist overtook them followed by a howling gale. He quickly lost consciousness and so did Puck.

When they awoke, well, Puck wok up first, and then the little pixie woke Guts up by repeatedly slapping him in the face and calling his name. "Guts! Guts! get up!" He said, before Guts flicked him in his bottom causing him to flap away with a "YIPE" before rubbing his sore behind. "What was that for?" Puck said indignantly. "Casca and the others are gone!" He says.

Guts's only remaining eye flew open as he quickly got up. But then he had to collapse to one knee in pain. "Guts, what is it?" Puck said, worriedly flitting to his side. Guts stood up and flexed. "It's nothing, just sore. We must find the others." Looking around, he could find no trace of his companions, and it was mid-day, so he had some time before sundown. He was on a road and, having no other direction to go, he began quickly traveling down it. It looked well-used.

(For the rest of the post, this song is playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4S6dNvHBYI )

Guts approaches the Scene of the attack and doesn't even pay it attention. One of the bandits order four of their men to rush him. "I'm in a hurry, move." He says calmly as they rush him, and don't even acknowledge him. "No talking my way out of this, huh? Fine." With a quick movement he drew Dragonslayer and with one sweep and a mighty CLANG noised, he cut all four men in half, sending their upper halves flying upwards with a fountain of blood.

The bandits, and guards stand stunned with awe. That's when Thalia saw his sword. No, it was too big to be called a sword. Too thick, Too heavy, Too rough, it was more like a heap of raw metal. Yet he swung it with speed and grace. One that was in hiding tried jumping at him from behind, but Guts was Too quick and punched him with his gauntleted arm. No, she can see it, his whole lower arm was metal, like some sort of prosthetic. "What's with you guys?" He says.

The bandits had since had their attention turned away from Thalia. That was when a small blue haired winged humanoid landed on Thalia's shoulder. "Hey, lady." He says. "You gotta go hide somewhere and keep your head down." Meanwhile two more bandits rush Guts from the left, leading with throwing knives which he deflects and counters when they get into range by cutting through both of them with another powerful strike. Another two rush him from the front, zig-zagging to try and disorient him, but he strikes with an overhead slash and cuts them in half vertically.

A final few simply rush him from all angles, seeking to overwhelm him with numbers and, gritting his teeth and with a single sweeping whirlwind strike, he cut down the rest of them. The ones near the carriage were either cut down by the guards who regained their senses or ran away in a total rout.

Shaking the blood off of his sword, he put it back in its sling on his back like what he did was nothing. This man, towering even over her brother and the burliest of her guards (As he is 6'8" ). Clad all in armor of strange black metal, this giant of a man had cut down a score of armed men like ripe wheat before a scythe, like some sort of War God. "Well, that's that." He said nonchalantly, before continuing on.

"Awesome, isn't he?" Puck says to Thalia. "Well, bye." he says, flying off after Guts.

Thalia didn't even realise that Guts was approaching until the bandits turned on him. But cutting four men in half was definitely an achievement, one that put the fight temporarily to a halt. Aether reined his horse around in front of her, clearly intending to put himself in the way of any potential further attack on his sister. She stretched up on her toes to see over the horse's rump anyway, curious about this new arrival. He was far different than anyone she had ever seen before.

She screamed when Puck suddenly landed on her shoulder, swatting at him in a fear reaction. "Go hide somewhere?" she repeated. "I can't just leave my brother!"

"Go, Thalia!" Aether insisted. A couple of the bandits decided to turn their attention back to their original targets, and she ran as instructed. Even though the road was well-used in places, it was thin here, with plenty of boulders and other natural hiding places within just a few feet of the trail. She crouched down but kept her eye on the fight until it was over.

"Awesome? He just-just murdered all those people!" Thalia had seen a couple of gladiatorial games, but such violence was not common in the life of an upper middle-class woman. Clearly her brother was more accustomed to it, and he had even taught Thalia to fight, but she'd never been thrust into a battle like that.

"Wait!" she yelled when Puck flew off. "What are you? And who's he?" She'd never seen a humanoid like Puck, though men of larger size were not uncommon. They were usually slaves for protection or sport.

"You, who are you?" Aether asked as well. "I've never seen the likes of either of you before."

Luckily, Puck was wary today after guts flicked him, and it helped that Thalia did not have incredibly good reflexes. Guts stopped and turned when Aether called out to him. "Guts, just Guts." He said as Puck flew back to Thalia.
"What, you've never seen an Elf before, lady?" Puck said before flexing and attempting to look manly, but only looking adorable and ridiculous from his small, and unmuscled boyish frame. "I am the great Puck, master of the Elf Dimension style! And he is my companion, Guts, the Black swordsman, killer of monsters, and the 100 man slayer!" Puck said proudly, puffing out his chest. Guts, for his part, seemed only annoyed at Puck's antics as he sighed and scratched his head.

"Puck, lets get going." Guts said as he turned to leave. Puck quickly flitted in front of Guts. Guts, of course, stopped walking.
"Hey, wait, we don't know where we are and these people seem nice enough, maybe they can help us find the others." Puck said, before flying back to Thalia. "Hey, lady, where are we? We got separated from our friends and Guts here is really worried."
    "Puck..."Guts began.
