[M] Star Wars: Shadows of Taris - Episode 1: Hunters of Darkness
Rated Mature for possible drug use, violence, and other mature themes.
All RPA and Mature Section rules apply.
An orphaned scavenger.
A washed-up old veteran.
A traitor Stormtrooper.
A walking carpet.
A football painted orange.
An ace pilot and a couple of redshirt pilots.
And Starkiller Base, possibly the most powerful space station constructed since the Star Forge, was destroyed. The curled and frozen husks of thousands of Imperial servants and their hallowed ships orbit the debris field of an entire world, obliterated so that other worlds might live.
The destruction of its most powerful space station dealt a devastating blow to the morale of the First Order. An aura of invincibility that had existed since its early victories over the squabbling warlords of the former Galactic Empire was shattered, perhaps irreparably. Infighting began almost as fast as the news could spread. Former warlords and the students of former warlords, sensing weakness, were the first to break away. Then the oppressed worlds, those who never wanted to be a part of the First Order, of which there were many, split off, claiming the independence that they craved. Not many have survived on their own. The First Order is wounded and reeling.
In spite of this, nobody dares to celebrate, for the First Order had also dealt a crippling blow to its enemies. Mere hours before it was destroyed, Starkiller Base obliterated much of the fleet of the New Republic and slaughtered its Senate. Far from a triumph of the light over the darkness, the retaliatory strike on Starkiller Base was a desperate, last-ditch attempt to avoid annihilation. And everyone knew it. It worked, but confidence in the New Republic has collapsed. Without a clear leader star systems have already begun to slip away, raising local militias to replace the decimated New Republic Fleet. The Resistance, led by Leia Organa of long-dead Alderaan, struggles to upkeep what remains of the Republic Navy with dwindling support. Without a clear enemy and with poverty threatening, fragments of the Resistance have begun to fracture and break away, becoming little better than pirates.
Yet there is hope.
Maziam Taris.
Harbinger of the Darkfleets. Bearer of the Cipher.
War hero. Warlord. War criminal.
And last, best hope for the Resistance and the New Republic.
Hailing from Taris, the former jewel of the Outer Rim, Maziam has long harbored a desire to see his homeworld returned to its glory. He has worked toward this goal all his life, yet it has slipped through his grasp time and time again. Now the planet threatens to slip from his grasp. The First Order, though badly crippled by its losses and hampered by infighting, continues to expand. At long last its borders have reached Taris. Though powerful, Maziam dares not contend with the First Order directly. At least, not yet. But he cannot, will not, abandon his homeworld.
Maziam has turned to the Resistance, the only force in the galaxy that has so far succeeded in thwarting the First Order's expansion. In exchange for his warlord realm joining the Republic and supporting the Resistance, Maziam demands that the Resistance send members to accompany him to Taris. Ostensibly they would be there to provide security and advice for him as he persuades the leaders there to join his fiefdom. In reality they would be there to do the hard persuasion and remove any First Order obstacles to his success. With rumors of Ren's Knights operating on the planet, he is desperate.
But there is one thing operating in his favor: The Resistance is desperate too.
Spoiler: Notes on Canon and RP Structure Overview
This RP takes place after the events of Episode VII: The Force Awakens. I do not and do not expect anyone to know everything about the Star Wars universe. For this RP, we will be using a scenario that I have set up and a combination of official canon and Legends (formerly known as Expanded Universe) canon. For the most part, anyone with a passing knowledge of SW will be able to play. I am open to new interpretations, but I make the final call.
I have also produced a not-stifling, but not-insignificant amount of material, most of which I will iterate below for players to keep a track of - more will be provided as it is discovered throughout the RP. Keep in mind that information, misinformation, and deception is an important part of this RP, so the distribution of information will not always be equal. This is intentional. If you ever want something confirmed, you may ask me: I have the final say.
Knowledge is power. Guard it well.
In line with that, this RP is part investigation, negotiation, and subterfuge, so be prepared for having to figure things out: not everything will be immediately apparent. This also means that, while characters can go in blasters blazing, it may not always be the best option. The choice, naturally, is for the players to make.
Please also note that while I intend for players to help build out the story of this RP, I do have a firm vision for the direction of this story. I am open to new ideas and changes in course, and most of the actions will be done by players, but this is strongly the story of the main character, Maziam Taris, and I have no qualms about making that clear. He will be taking a limited direct role, but the world players step into is very much based around him.
Players will take the fore, but I will introduce a number of NPCs to further the story.
Spoiler: Setting
Shadows of Taris will take place mostly on and around Taris. For those who are unfamiliar with Taris, it is a former city-world in the Outer Rim near Mandalorian space. During the Darth Malak-led war against the Republic in the aftermath of the Mandalorian War, Taris was bombarded into ruins by the Sith armada, its proud spires laid low. It gained some prominence again during the invasion of the True Sith, but quickly slipped back into obscurity afterwards. All told, Taris was once a thriving metropolis world in the Outer Rim that was mostly pounded into dust and then left in poverty for the last three thousand years. This is partly due to the fact that after KOTOR I and SWTOR, the Legends canon games by Bioware, the material has essentially been untouched in the modern (modern being the movie series) era. So it is still a ruin and the rest I am retconning. And no, I have not played SWTOR.
For the purposes of this RP, there is fresh material on Taris that I have constructed. It is mostly still a ruin, but received some aid from the Galactic Empire at the personal direction of Emperor Palpatine himself. Most residents believe that this was a favor to Maziam Taris, who was a prominent supporter of the Emperor and Moff of a neighboring system at the time. Whatever the truth, the result was that Taris enjoyed a limited golden age for a part of the Empire's existence, something that had not happened in tens of generations. Parts of the grand spires were rebuilt, or at least refurbished, and relatively stable safe zones were significantly bolstered for the first time in centuries. With its infrastructure partially rebuilt, Taris experienced a return of normalized trade along regular trade lanes. Though not quite self-sustaining, Taris became able to bring in commerce that put it on the path to recovery.
Yet Taris is not an unchanged planet. Thousands of years of decay have rusted much beyond the new city centers into dust. Opportunistic scavengers have pilfered all but the deepest places. Gangs, though not as prominent as they were before Maziam purged many of them from the planet, still roam the mid and outskirts of the cities, totally controlling some of the rural settlements. And beyond the rural settlements nothing but beasts rule, strange creatures, many of them brought to the world by Ithorian traders trying to breathe life back into the land. Beyond these former rehabilitation regions are dead zones where nothing intelligent, and occasionally nothing breathing, live. At least, that is the best guess of most people: few if any have come back from wandering those forsaken lands.
Spoiler: Factions
Here is where you will find information on the various factions in the game. Some descriptions will be sparing since they don't need to be expansive while others will be expanded as new information is discovered.
Spoiler: Galactic Factions
Spoiler: The New Republic
An ostensibly democratic successor to the Grand Republic that rose from the ashes of the Galactic Empire, the New Republic is made up of many star systems and species, all of which are represented by the Galactic Senate. At least in theory they are. The Senate was destroyed along with most of the New Republic Navy during the first firing of Starkiller Base. As a result, the New Republic is effectively leaderless and fracturing as the many star systems break away to fend for themselves. One thing that none of these Republic nay-sayers likes to admit is that no individual star system can contend with the power of the First Order, even in its crippled state.
Spoiler: The Resistance
A collection of privateers and freedom fighters resisting the First Order, the Resistance was born from when Leia Organa grew frustrated with the insistence of the New Republic that peace could be made with the First Order. With the Senate now destroyed, there are fewer people to argue with her decision, in more ways than one. Incorporating many former members of the Rebellion or the Alliance for the Restoration of the Republic, the Resistance has, up until recently, received significant support from the Republic. As essentially an unofficial part of the New Republic Navy, the Resistance received many new ships and personnel during the time it was formalized before the loss of the Senate. Now it struggles to maintain its depleted, but still significant military power with the diminished resources at its disposal. Its members, never the most professional kind, have begun in small groups to turn pirate, which is not helping Organa prepare for the First Order's inevitable retaliation for their destruction of Starkiller Base.
Spoiler: New Jedi Order
The Jedi Order set up by Luke Skywalker following the death of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. It was destroyed with the betrayal of Kylo Ren and Luke fled into hiding.
However, rumors hold that Skywalker has returned to teach a new generation of Jedi, the first of which is a scavenger named Rey who aided in the destruction of Starkiller Base.
Spoiler: The First Order
The most powerful of the Galactic Empire's successor states, the First Order is a relatively centralized conglomerate of warlord states under the shadowy Supreme Leader Snoke and his apprentice, Kylo Ren. With significant holdings in the Unknown Regions, the First Order's true size is known only to a handful while its military might and ability to expend resources is visible to all. It is the main rival of the New Republic and responsible for the construction of Starkiller Base and, consequentially, the destruction of both the New Republic Senate and a good amount of the New Republic Navy. In spite of this stunning victory, the destruction of Starkiller Base has caused the First Order to suffer from opportunistic infighting by its members. It is off-balance for the moment, but few doubt that it will recover.
Spoiler: Knights of Ren
A group of Dark Jedi under the command of Kylo Ren in the service of the First Order and Supreme Leader Snoke.
Spoiler: Realm of Warlord Taris
The fiefdom of Maziam Taris, the Realm of Warlord Taris, contrary to its name, does not actually include the world of Taris. Based primarily in and around the Manadlore system in the Outer Rim, this Realm consists primarily of a series of small but well-defended and well-resourced star systems. In spite of its size, the Realm benefits from a significantly higher-than-average number of dedicated and loyal soldiers, many who are veterans of the Galactic Empire stretching all the way back to the Clone Wars. In addition to this, the Realm benefits from the Darknet, though that may just be rumor.
Spoiler: Darknet
- Information Classified -
Spoiler: Tarisian Factions
Spoiler: Council of Taris
The ruling body of Taris, it is made up of representatives of its 153 regions. The Council sets general policy, commands the Tarisian military forces, and deals with most off-world affairs.
Spoiler: Important NPCs
Like with the Factions section, some characters will receive little to no description until later. Canon characters will receive virtually nothing at all.
Spoiler: Important Characters
Spoiler: Maziam Taris
Only bits and pieces are known about the man known as Maziam Taris. It is known that he was born on Taris. He served in the Grand Army of the Republic as a commander during the Clone Wars and that he quarreled with the Jedi. After the rise of the Empire, he joined the fledgling military and was assigned to an Outer Rim territory. There he routed proto-Rebel forces and crushed the pirates aiding them. Not a single pirate escaped. As a reward for his achievement, he was transferred to control a taskforce sent to cleanse a group of worlds near Taris space. No specimens of the species native to that group of planets were ever heard from again; their homeworld was later renamed Paradise when it was discovered that the name given to it by the natives had vanished unaccountably. By then Paradise was the home of many discharged veterans, all of whom became intensely loyal to Maziam when he was appointed as Moff of the world and surrounding systems. Following the destruction of the second Death Star, Maziam established himself as a Warlord and isolated his territory by force. Thus far, nobody has managed to conquer his corner of the galaxy.

Appearance: Standing at about 5'10, Vinten is a slim man. He has a thin black beard, with a thin black mustache. His hair is mostly black with a few touches of grey, and is combed over to the left. He has dark brown eyes and thin, well trimmed eyebrows. He has a pointed nose and a faint scar under his left eye. He generally wears a black or brown vest, with pants and boots to match. If he is outside he wears a black cloak to conceal any weapons he may be carrying.
Faction: Realm of Warlord Taris
Equipment: Vinten carries a small pistol at all times. If he is out he will carry another small pistol and a vibrodagger, along with several smoke grenades in his cloak.
Personality: Vinten is extremely ambitious and commanding. He has always had his eyes on power, and is willing to work very hard to get it. Vinten can also become very testy if people do not recognize his authority and will call them out on it. If he is in a good mood, Vinten can be an enjoyable and delightful person to be around. He can be funny and kind, but on the inside is plotting what his next move is.
Force Sensitive: No
History: Vinten was born on the quaint planet of Naboo. Unlike his famous uncle, Vinten was born to a family of farmers. However, he wasn't farming material, and his father was very good at pointing it out. He wasn't a particularly strong person, nor was he very keen on getting down in the dirt. As time went on, and Vinten's father continued to harass his about his inability to do anything right, Vinten left, abandoning his quaint little homestead on Naboo.
Vinten found himself in the Hosnian System, watching members of the New Republic Senate work. He took a liking to the intricacies and the political intrigue of life in government. Unfortunately, he had no place in the Senate as he had no system to represent.
After a while spent at the Galactic Senate, he moved out, finding a new home on Taris.

Alsod has access to armour that is reminiscent of his CSF days, which he keeps inside his locker at the base he is stationed in. Though usually he’ll opt for a low-key approach that would appear quite casual. In his casual outfit, he’ll wear a long black coat with inner red lining worn over a similarly coloured black shirt. On his leather belt he keeps pouches for tools and his blaster pistol holster.. The lower portion of his body is covered in a pair of dark red trousers and black boots.
Personality: Stern and seemingly embittered, Alsod is an aggressive former detective, having spent much of his adult life working in the underworld of Coruscant. Though he seems cold, calculating and somewhat arrogant, his heart is in the right place. It takes a while to warm to him, though anyone who does know him on a personal level knows that he is incredibly loyal to those closest to him. Whilst he believes that there are many in the galaxy that does deserve death, Alsod is restrained in his sense of justice. As such, when not in a warzone, his weapons will always be on stun and use non-lethal methods of taking down his enemies. He spares little time for pleasure and entertainment, though he’ll never refuse a drink with a friend or trusted ally.
Force Sensitive: No
History:
Born six years before the battle of Yavin to two Duros Rebels, the young child was born from war. By the age of four, he lost his mother in an imperial raid on the base he and his mother lived in, on the planet of Dorlo. Alsod was captured in the incident, and was then used as bait to to draw out his father.
When the rebel cell was encouraged into action, Alsod was rescued, though not after some fierce fighting. With his mother gone, Alsod had no choice but to to look for other means of protecting his son, whilst the liberation of Dorlo was completed. By 5 ABY, the war with the Empire was over, and Alsod found himself moving in with his father to the former capital. Two years later Alsod was in a military academy, following his father into the life of the military. Eventually he ended up in the hands of the New Republic Armed forces. As there was no war to be had, Alsod found himself to be something of a galactic policeman, securing worlds within the Corellian sector. Finding quite a bit of downtime, Alsod found himself in the arms of a small Rodian smuggler named Irdii on more than one occasion. Much to his chagrin, she was a smuggler. The two butted heads almost as much as they liked each other, and the two would often find themselves fighting off various gangsters because of the woman’s underworld connections. At one point, Alsod took a blaster shot for her. Knowing that if he was caught with a smuggler, Alsod would likely get discharged from the New Republic Armed Forces, she stole him away and fled to the neighbouring Duro. Unfortunately the two were pursued and though they survived, Irdii made Alsod promise that should they make it out alive, that he was to marry her.
Two months later, they were wed, and Alsod made his way back to Corellia. Though his efforts with Irdii had put an end to a crime ring operating on Corellia, the Armed Forces considered it to be a dereliction of duty, and encouraged him out of the military. Alsod returned to Coruscant. From here, Alsod entered law enforcement, enrolling with the CSF. Unfortunately Irdii didn’t look on this too well, given he had chosen a life that directly opposed hers. Not that she told him, but she secretly wished he would join her crew. Accepting her loss, Iridii turned her back on Alsod and disappeared into the stars, never to be seen again.
His first job with the CSF was behind a desk in the upper levels of Coruscant, dealing with senate security details, patrols and such like. Though he served with distinction, he grew bored. The time alone gave him enough room to grow lonely, and wanting a more active lifestyle, decided to transfer down to the lower levels. After buying a cheap apartment, he moved into Level Twenty-One Hundred. Now an inspector, Alsod began working in the Coruscant underworld. His cases ranged from explosions, missing people, murders and riots, depending on what case he was given. It was around this time that he got his hands on his trusted Model 434 blaster pistol.
As the years went on, and more and more significance was stolen away from Coruscant, darker elements of the galaxy moved into the underworld. The Black Suns moved in where the Imperials had vacated. Cartels followed suit and soon information spread that those that would become the First Order had infected the world with its Imperial ways.
By the time that General Leia Organa formed the Resistance, it was all too clear that something was very wrong with Coruscant, and unable to find means of dealing with it, the detective turned to the Resistance. Under the promise that they would deal with the First Order, and strike out against the very core of Coruscant’s problems, Alsod joined the Resistance. There he brought his skills as a New Republic trooper and his skills working within the Coruscant Underworld, becoming a field operative. He has served faithfully in the Resistance, since its founding.
((Hope this is alright, was a bit longer than I would've liked!))

Reason: Coding mishap
Name: Fernmar Wilans Aliases: Blackjack, Trigger-Finger, Sparky (Hates this one) Species: Human Age: 29 Gender: Male Height: 5'7 Weight: 178 Lbs. Eyes: Brown Hair: Short/Stubble | Brown Skin: Pink/Caucasian Force Sensitive: N/A Faction: Resistance
Personality
Fernmar is a some sort of personification of "What not to do as a Bounty Hunter". Even though he has experienced the ultimate form of irony, he wholeheartedly embraces it. In fact, he has a tendency to do the opposite of what any bounty hunter would do in a given situation (for example, if Fernmar is talking with a hutt and that hutt caught onto him, threatening violence, then Fernmar would incur said violence). Although, he doesn't actively partake in dangerous situations. Instead, he lacks the common sense to know that he is in a dangerous situation. Rather, he would take his instincts over common sense any day because he's relied on his instincts and gut-feelings all this time. So, it would be perfectly reasonable to assume that Fernmar doesn't care about thinking things through, instead he goes with the flow and responds appropriately (relative to him; meaning what he deems appropriate). Also, he lacks the decency as well. He speaks his mind regardless of whether it was appropriate to speak at that time. Simply put, he does what he does and has no regrets.
Fernmar was born on Cadinth, an outer-rim world that lies in the Tion Cluster. His family found shelter in the homes that were created to withstand the desert heat and the blistering sands that trail beneath their feet. Fernmar lived away from the nearest form of civilization, and his mother liked that - though his father was not too fond of it. Often time, to pass the time, his father would teach Fernmar how to use a blaster or perform in basic combat maneuvers and to add onto that he had received simple education. The type of education that one can get by on - education that was probably on par with a highschool diploma.
His life was simple and sweet, never really having to worry about the interstellar politics of the age. However, that life was abruptly cut short by vicious bounty hunters that had come looking for his father. Apparently, his father had been dealing with bounty hunters prior to Fernmar's birth. So, to his mother, this wasn't all too surprising and fortunately they had prepared for the coming of these bounty hunters. With his mother by his side, Fernmar fled into the desert countryside where he would wait for his father to return. Though, he never did.
Fernmar believes one of two things, his father left them for the bounty hunters or he died trying to dispatch them. Regardless of where the coin falls, Fernmar is still rather vengeful of bounty hunters but the ultimate irony came when those so-called bounty hunters came looking for him (by this time his mother had died of natural causes). Being an orphan, and on the verge of dying of starvation, Fernmar was picked up by these bounty hunters and thus was whisked into the realm of interstellar bounty hunting. His one true irony.
Living his life on the edge of imminent danger, essentially, all hours of the day and night, Fernmar had made a name for himself amongst his crew. Although the name, of which has now become his alias, wasn't something to be proud of. He was called "Blackjack", and how he obtained this name was because of his dastardly card-play. He knows his way around a card, and could swindle any man or woman out of a few credits. Although that isn't all he's really known for. In fact, taking into account his basic blaster training from years prior, he has become quite skilled with handling blaster pistols specifically (as that is his favorite type of blaster). However, that does fault him for often overestimating his blaster skills; often time getting himself into trouble that way.
But as times change, and the flow of the galaxy began to stir, Fernmar knew that he would have to be held up to some sort of responsibility. That responsibility was working with the Resistance. Strangely enough, Fernmar had not realized that his crew, led by Captain Kle Tra (a female Rodian who had personally taken interest in Fernmar and his skills), was working with the Resistance at the time. So, Captain Tra had ordered Fernmar to do what the Resistance says in order to get a profit as their motto is: "Credits make the Galaxy go 'round".
So now here he is, working for the Resistance and having been ordered to work as security detail for some man he never even heard of until now. Really, his life was about to get a whole lot more interesting than he had anticipated.

One of the requirements for a RP of the Week submission is that you have a banner. If you're not artistically inclined, however, do not fear! We have several amazing artists on the site who will make one for you. Simply post here.
Next, you can post in this thread and the staff will display your role-play in their signatures.
Also feel free to post in the Roleplay Directory. This is a thread that anyone can view at any time to see roleplays that are currently seeking and accepting members.
The bigger the explosion the less problems it is incapable of solving.
