What does the phrase "And Eye for an eye (will make the whole world blind)" mean to you? Do you give forgiveness to people who harm you or do you strike back? Do you try and "follow" this phrase whatever it's meaning be to you? |

That can be a violent phrase ![]() I always do my best to forgive. Although, I don't forget. An eye for an eye, Will make the whole world blind. And it will never make the difference. If if you get revenge it doesn't change what happened. |

it was a great idea back at the time when they used it... This could also funnel into the never-ending argument on the death penalty, as well. Personally, I think this idea is outdated, but if it worked back then (Supposedly. We probably have no idea.) why wouldn't it work now? I'm sick of seeing people that don't take the punishments we deal out seriously, and going right back into doing crime. Even if some change there ways, there are still those who won't listen to anything. I think there should be a compromise or something. Throw them in jail for a short while, then let them go. If they do it again, they obviously haven't learned their lesson, so then inflict the 'eye for an eye' punishment. EDIT: it's not just about revenge, it's teaching people their lesson so they don't do anything stupid again. And don't automatically assume this punishment automatically means " we're gonna hurt you so bad so this guy can be happy again." Edited by That Guy, 22 Sep 2008, 03:13 AM.

Ah yes, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. A smart man in his own right. But another smart man said otherwise. Or my personal favorite twist on it. The fact is, there are cases when things should be let go, but then there are different points. Points where the law won't do shit so you have to stand up... Murderers, Rapists... These kind of people should be handled in this fashion. There should be no second chances. My best friend was beaten and raped twice, and I'll be damned if I let the guy get away with it. Even if it takes me a lifetime, he'll get whats coming to him, no matter what the method. That's my strongest personal experience with revenge. There are others, but that's the best one to make a point out of. |

The whole phrase is an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. It means if someone pulled out your eye, you have the right to pull out theirs. Same with anything else. If a builder made a house, and someone else lived in it. And the house wasnt built well and something broke and killed the son of the family that lived there-the builders son would be killed. A ruler of some person i cant remember made it up-it was his code. |

The Code of Hammurabi. It's my favorite historical system ever, because it was right to the point. |

Since i'm lazy, i only read Gabe's first post. Ahh.. And eye for an eye. I really like this phrase. Forgiveness? Depends who it is. If it's a person i could care less about - sure. Let 'em be a one eyed pirate. Darky would love 'em and beg them to make her a pirate to. Then because it's an eye for an eye, she'd get them back. Then Mr. No Eyes would go stumble around until he fell into the dark abyss - even if he did have an eye, it still be to dark to see! *Evil giggle* |
