Im curious, how many folks here have had to make a decision when it comes to honesty. If so, share the story!Today was one of those days for me... So, Mom hands me her card and asks me to pull out the finds for her. I agree and set off. I decide to use the new ATM because I found out the other day it only charges a dollar. Deal right? Right! So, the 160 is dispensed in 20's... And then the machine starts whirring again. I watch astounded, as 5's start coming out. I pull out one bunch of 100... and another whirrs out! Panicked, I thought perhaps I had pressed the wrong amount in... but the receipt clearly said 160. Now, my question to you is... what would you do? The thought briefly crossed my mind folks. 200 is a LOT in my world after all. But, I took it to a CSM before I could think about it any longer, and explained the problem. She seemed downright shocked I would even tell her. That I hadn't run off gleefully into the night. Honesty. Seriously overrated. *sighs* It ain't making me any richer I assure ya! |

Hm. It would depend on my mood. Sadly, I'm not all that good of a person. When I was younger I have lied a lot, and I stole jewellery and all that jazz, because... Well, that's the saddest part really. My motto was: If you're going to make it easy for me, hell, it's not my problem. About five years ago I acquired some sense, but I wouldn't know if I'd bring that money back. If it's as much as you say it is, I probably would. Were it just ten, or twenty... I'd take it. But the fact that it's a machine would somehow make it the same as taking someone's wallet that's fallen on the ground - hmm, no, I think I'd return it if it came from a machine. |

I found a wallet on the road outside my work once, belonged to some old woman according to the ID inside but there was something like $70 dollars in there too. I didn't bother thinking about handing it in anywhere, I just did what I always do with surprise money, I burned it on useless shit. A bottle of Jack and a pack of tailors on top of my beer and tobacco for the week and the rest went to paying for breakfast every morning. This one time, when I was a kid, my mates and I were hanging out at Burger King and getting free refills and shit because we were all piss poor and didn't like drinking the free water at McDonalds. ![]() Anyways, some uni-student guy was there with his mates and he dropped his wallet, I spotted it and picked it up. We watched him and his friends come back looking for his wallet, watched them asking the staff if they'd found it and we even saw him outside later that afternoon. My mate got the money, my cousin got the wallet, we threw all the cards and shit away and I got nothing. Sorta fail at honesty. Anyways, I wouldn't return it, I like money. |

When I was working at the CD* of our hospital, my patient, an elderly woman, handed me php500 (about how much I spend in a week). *CD -- "Clinical Division", which is a euphemism for "Charity Division". Basically, our patients are often below poverty level. I told her that I couldn't take her money. She said "take it, no one will see" (and that was true). "No ma'am. Someone will see -- *I* will see." Another instance was where I was in Hongkong. I found a purse with a _lot_ of money inside as well as passports. I promptly handed it over the concierge of the hotel. I later learned that the lady who owned the purse gave the concierge US$200, but I didn't regret returning the purse at all. I consider myself a scrupulously honest person. ... However, in Nona's situation (ATM machine spitting out money), I would *not* have returned the cash. It was a mistake with the ATM. Unlike the previous situations a mentioned where someone loses something, in cases of ATM malfunction no one does -- it's chalked up to operating expenses of the bank, or covered by their insurance. Shit happens. The same is true when I'm mistakenly delivered fries if I eat out. Fries aren't counted because they are served in bulk -- even with a mistake like that, no one will get punished for it. Had I been given money by a rich patient, I would have taken it without blinking. Yes, I wouldn't have landed in trouble (I would have had anybody else been there), but the elderly woman was in the CD -- she wouldn't have been there if she _did_ have money. Maybe she felt obliged to show her gratitude, but, really, she desperately needed that money more than I did. Had I taken the woman's purse, she might have had trouble. The loss of a passport while abroad is devastating. Edited by mondu_the_fat, 12 Nov 2008, 11:44 AM.

My father once found a black case holding a digital camera inside. Did he return it? Nope, he kept it and now my parents have a better camera than I. When it comes to money, that shit is mine. I saw a man drop ten dollars in front of me one time, and right away I just picked it up and casually placed it in my pocket. You can't do much with ten dollars, but hell, I felt lucky. One time I was in CVS, to pick up my medication, and while I was waiting I noticed there was a pair of car keys left on the seat. I knew at the person was going to come back (and what the hell am I going to do with car keys?) so I just gave the keys to the person at the pharmacy. After I picked up my meds and left the store, I noticed the man was coming back looking frantic. I was glad that I did something right. So in conclusion, I'm brutally honest when it comes to speaking the truth to someone, but when it comes to money, I'm very slick. If I find money, even if it's a dollar, it's mine. However, if I find like...a purse, a set of car keys...I'll just return it, just because of my guilty conscious. |

I don't really care what people think of me, so if people ask me for my opinion, I tell them honestly. The only time I lie is to keep myself out of trouble with my mom. I don't let cashiers give me too much change or anything like that. Oh, forgot, I WILL lie to help out a friend, but only if they REALLY need it, and not so they can do something immoral. |

The last time I was at a grocery store buying things, the girl at the check out entered in the wrong amount for what I gave her so the little machine couldn't tell her the correct amount of money she was supposed to give me back. It was causing enough of a brain meltdown on her part that I literally had to help her out by telling her how much she owed me back as she was trying to give me way more than she should. >.> She was very lucky that I am honest as I am sure I could of got her to give me more than I even way paying. |
