I remember everything from that day. I really wish I didn't. ...Really. But lately it seems that nothing ever goes the way I wish it would. Nothing seems to fit like it should, act like it should, or even look like it should. Nothing seems... normal anymore. That's all I want to be honest. If things were normal... if I were normal... I wouldn't mind living. That day, I had found my way onto a fairly tall skyscraper's ceiling. It was actually a lot easier than you think. I had never even been in that place before, but all one had to do was press a few buttons, slip through a few doors... and voila. The view was amazing really, if one looked up. The skies were a brilliant blue, clear without a sign of any clouds to mar them. An idle gull could be seen here or there, drifting towards their next feeding grounds, but mostly it was just clear. Bright, clear, and blue. It put me at a sort of ease with what I was about to do actually, as I took a few more steps closer to the edge. Folding my arms against the back of my head, I glanced towards my own outfit. Nothing special, just a pair of blue jeans and a shirt proclaiming my love of Queen. It wouldn't really matter what I was wearing, from a height like this. I suppose if one were to land below it would all look the same. I glanced below, but I was not afraid. Hundreds of little cars ran up and down the roads, tiny dots I knew were people milled about here or there. I suppose I was sorry for them at least, this certainly was not going to be pretty. Since I could not get myself a gun, well, they would have to deal. I still did not move, as I stood balanced there between life and certain death. It was sad really... how had I found myself here? After all, I was a pretty bright kid, had a life of scholarships and college ahead. I had a family who loved me, a dog to greet me everyday, a house to come back to. So why was I up here? As usual however, the reminder did not take long to show up. A demonic visage appeared, watching me. I was certain that at one point it had been a crow. But as it stood there it gained a more humanoid form, and a longer beak filled with jagged teeth. Nothing... nothing ever looked like it should. And its red eyes looked back at me, as though to grin. What more prompting did I need? It had always been like this for me, since birth. If I were to speak of it, I was brushed off as having too much imagination. There was nobody to commiserate to, nobody to listen. And it would never go away, as much as I tried to shut it out. I looked back at the raven demon, and gave a light grin. "See ya," I told it, and without hesitation I jumped over the edge. Soaring, for a few moments I began to fall downwards the air rushing past me. My stomach tried to escape through my ears I was certain... but I still smiled the whole time nonetheless. Soon, it would be over. I would have my escape... and whatever greeted me in the next life I would be ready. Be it Heaven, be it Hell, I didn't care. I just wanted out. I spread my arms, ready to embrace the pavement below and whatever else I would hit. I was sorry for those I would leave behind... but I was ready. And just as suddenly as it started, it stopped. I found myself caught rather suddenly, cradled by a set of powerful arms. "L-let me go!" I shouted, fear lining my voice. But I was not sure if it was the fear of whatever held me... or the fear of living. I pleaded further, but my savior seemed to have deaf ears as we started to go upwards once more. And I realized I could hear the flapping of wings. More of the supernatural. It was too much. I started to shake, but even as we landed back on the rooftop the arms never loosened. "Let me go please!" I urged it. The arms still did not loosen, and it was then I felt a new sensation. It was cold... wet. And for the first time I looked up, and saw his face. It was the crow demon from before... and tears fell from his eyes. I paused, stunned. I did not understand, could not understand what it all meant. And then there came a heavy sigh. "Crow... put him down will you?" And suddenly I found myself released. But I didn't fall to the ground as I thought I might. Instead I stared at the one named so simply. But who else was here? Looking over I saw what looked like a coyote. Only this coyote stood as a human would, with rather long black hair and a rather serious expression. Also female. I looked back towards the edge, before feeling Crow's hand upon my shoulder. "Don't," he spoke quietly, with an edge of pleading to his voice I could not miss. I paused for a moment, before wearily nodding. "I just want to be normal..." I told them. "Yet here I am babbling to a crow demon and a coyote something or other!" The coyote's look turned to amusement. "Spirit. Coyote spirit. Our names are Coyote and Crow respectively... easy to remember no? As to why we are here... well. The powers that be, the High Gods, have decided it's time. We can't have demigods running around without training after all now can we?" I must have had that expression on my face, because Coyote began to laugh. "What? By the Mother... nobody's told you? Oh that's just rich! Ooooh, fun times indeed! No wonder you tried to... man we're lucky you didn't try to gouge out your eyes!" Crow then stepped forward, red eyes narrowed. "Enough. Things aren't how they used to be, it is not his fault he does not know. But now that he does...much will change." Crow smiled a slight. "Brother, you don;t understand now, but I'll ensure you will. Coyote too. Right Coyote?" "Yeah yeah, whatever. Man you are SUCH a pansy..." Crow sighed, shaking his head. "You see what I have to put up with?" he asked, smiling at me. "I... I'm still stuck on the brother part. Figure of speech right? Last I checked I wasn't related to crow demons..." Coyote laughed once more. "Demons! Cuuuute! Oh gods I swear this keeps getting better and better!" "You're not helping!" ...And that was my introduction to Coyote and Crow. But it was only the beginning, as I found out. Things were about to get a whole lot stranger after all... including myself. |
