the forums really do need to have more space for titles... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/3454575/American-Idol-contestant-Paula-Goodspeed-humiliated-by-rude-Cowell-say-family.html Goodspeed was found dead on Tuesday outside the home of Paula Abdul, Cowell's fellow judge on the US talent show. The 30-year-old is believed to have killed herself by taking a drugs overdose and reportedly had a history of mental illness. As police investigate Goodspeed's history, the spotlight has fallen on her American Idol audition from January 2006. Millions of viewers saw Cowell mock Goodspeed's teeth brace, telling her: "I don't think any artist on earth could sing with that much metal in your mouth... that's like a bridge." After the crestfallen hopeful left the audition room, Cowell joked: "How did she get through the metal detector? It must have gone crazy." After the footage was aired, Goodspeed wrote on her MySpace blog that she was finding it difficult to cope with the "haters" who mocked her. Goodspeed's family said she was heartbroken at such a brutal rejection. Her niece, Sonja McIntyre, told US breakfast show Good Morning America: "Paula reacted pretty much the way anyone would react. Saying that she had a bridge in her mouth? That's rude. She didnt go there for looks, she went there for vocals. She went there to sing." The programme also featured an interview with psychologist Dr Bethany Marshall, who said: "She may have felt that her life as she knew it was over, simply because she was criticised on this show. Here's the problem with these kinds of shows. If you have a personality disordered, fragile, vulnerable contestant who is very sensitive to criticism, and you put the image of them being criticised on YouTube... plastered in front of millions of people - they're not Teflon-coated. They cannot handle it." Cowell and Fox, the network which airs American Idol, declined to comment |

That's so sad! Sometimes the criticism on that show can be anything but constructive!

I already knew about this. Saw it on the news. Yeah sad thing that happened to her, but I can't believe she went this far over that. |

That was a tad over board but still that was a most unfortunate thing to happen to her. |

If you can't take the criticism, you should never go in the first place. I mean, come on. you're OBVIOUSLY going to be critiqued in some way. I'm not saying that what Simon said was exactly necessary , but.. It's just unnecessary to take it that far. That's just silly. |

If she already had a mental imbalance, then what's "rational" to other people isn't "rational" to her. That's why it's called "mental illness", people - what you may be able to handle, other people can't. That's not because they're "silly" or "lame", but because they're ILL. It's easy to snort and say "emo" when it isn't you...but shyt happens to everyone, anytime, anywhere. I've worked with enough of the mentally ill over the years as an outreach; persistently, it's not the mentally ill themselves which tends to fry me, but how people are so dismissive of them and their issues. Alright fine. Then what's to blame? Simon (and mass amounts of other random people), or her mental illness? |

It isn't necessary to blame anyone, contrary to what these sorts of sensationalist stories would like people to think. It's enough that a woman is dead, and her family grieves. But I get rather tired of the rather insensitive commentary of the general public when it comes to these sorts of "stories" - which involve real people, solely for the sake of a headline.

I am sorry for those who like the show but seriously the judges need to think before they open their big mouth. I mean yeah its funny at the moment but they don't know the person personally they have no idea how it will effect them so they should just keep their comments on their talent not how they look. Just because they can say something to hurt that person doesn't mean they should. |

I've never been a big fan of AI, especially because the judges are so harsh. Yeah, maybe it's funny for the viewers, but not so much for the contestants. That said, if you have a history of insecurity and the like, don't go on the show. We all know how the judges behave. I don't condone Cowell's behavior, but I don't think it's his fault that she died. Edit: can't spel
