The Interplanetary Survey Service is dedicated to the discovery of intelligent life.

Unfortunately, they got you instead.

You are a commissioned officer with the Interplanetary Survey Service. Your mission is to visit worlds that were investigated by ftl robot probes sometime during the previous century and provide updated reports that will be used to judge if a world should be considered suitable for first contact if inhabited, or colonized if not. Or rejoined, in the case of a lost human colony.

You were also supposed to maintain the high expectations and dignity of the service - however, you made a mistake. Perhaps the admiral discovered your affair with their wife, an unfortunate accident where your contra-grav jeep slammed into the admiral's office, putting your foot in your mouth with the wrong political statement or any of a thousand other possible incidents that has put a black mark on your record and a desire by the ISS' Admiralty Board to stick you someplace far out of their collective sight.

And they have. You have received orders to report aboard the ISS Clarkson at the ISS Station on the Independent Planet New Haven on the edge of known human exploration.

The ISS Clarkson is not one of the latest Lewis & Clark Exploration ships - it's an ancient Magellan-class contra-grav saucer, 200' across with four decks, small compartments and narrow corridors - which you'd know if you took the free tour on the museum ship next door to the ISS Academy in San Diego. Most Magellan saucer-ships are moth-balled or decommissioned, about to be scrapped, making the ISS Clarkson one of the few saucers remaining in service.

Your new Commanding Officer is Captain Katherine Bell, who disappeared from a party celebrating her selection by the Advancement Board to the rank of Captain and command of a ship to reappear a week later stumbling into a Terran embassy five hundred light years away, explaining that she'd been kidnapped by aliens who somehow transported her there without a ship. As she has passed a psychological exam, she's been returned to service. That she's been put in charge of an ancient (if recently refurbished) ship does not show a lot of support by the Admiralty, who've also chosen it to be the unofficial service dumping ground.

Welcome to the Leper Colony.

This is a semi-consensual role-play meaning that you give limited consent to your character being manipulated in small ways by the other players, such as shaking hands or light conversation. Anything else requires your permission and will be posted by you.

You cannot harm another player's character in any way without their permission. (e.g. You decide to throw a punch at Moe, so you write "Larry throws a punch at Moe." Moe then decides if your punch hits or misses. "Moe staggers back from the punch, rolls his eyes and falls to the floor, unconscious.")

If you do not post for one week, I will turn your character into an NPC temporarily and post on your behalf to keep the game going.

The level of this role-play is semi-literate, so I want two or three meaningful paragraphs per post. I expect at least 3 posts per week and a commitment of 25 posts by each player.

This game will use the episode format. An IC thread will be opened for each adventure. At the end, a summary will be posted in the ship's log and the old thread archived before we start the new ic episode thread.

ISS Clarkson SS 407 Bridge
http://role-player.net/forum/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=127
This is the command center of the saucer, located in a dome at the top of the ship. The outer gray ring is a service corridor that contains the various bridge systems and life support.

A large holo-tank display screen in front linked to external cameras allow viewing the area surrounding the saucer. A helm console set in front of it on a raised platform allows the ship's operator to control the direction and speed of the ship.

To the right of the display screen is the ship's Fire Control station that directs the ship's weapons (forward plasma & laser battery, belly plasma cannon), defensive shield and secondary probe station.

Directly behind him is two raised seats for the captain on the right and the XO on the left. This allows them to monitor the consoles on their side. Directly behind them is the Boatswain's station and the secondary display stations on the curved wall.

The stations on the right or starboard side is Communications (ftl and radio) and Science which shows data from the external sensors and probes, as well as links to the ship's library system. Behind this console is the stairwell to Deck 1 facing aft; behind it is a storage closet (forward) and a toilet (aft).

The stations on the left are Astrogation and Engineering, which doubles as damage control. The stairwell behind it goes to Deck 1 and faces forward.

Terran Union Army Surplus Contra-Grav Jeep
http://role-player.net/forum/picture.php?albumid=14&pictureid=114
Lightly armored, low-body, open design that can carry one operator, four passengers and gear. No internal life support. Ugly but practical.

Contra-grav coils make the jeep 'buoyant' in a gravity well, while thrusters allow the operator to move and steer the vehicle to a maximum velocity of 95 MPH. Power comes from a hydrogen fission engine that runs on water; five gallons is good for two weeks use.

With proper life-support vacuum gear, can be used to shuttle from surface to low orbit but not recommended.

NAME: Stith Hiridct

Rank: Lieutenant Commander

Desired Position: Engineer

AGE: 38

BIOGRAPHY: Brought about in a desert land, dry in most areas, with raids about every time a new ship touches down. His race is looked as a group with too much stuff than they need and are exploited heavely as a result.

One day a large freight, one of the Terran Union freighters, arrived. Mainly as promised support as a payment of some of the minerals found. They however weren't overly fond of the mantrins and didn't seem to help a cause. What they wanted in return, or forced return as calateral was some mantrins to come aboard the ship. For a "meeting".

The meeting was anything but, it was identifiation to the papers sent in for the requitment the last six months. They wanted to see the mantrins in use before they fully agreed to support them and end the raids. Seeing as it was them who was playing a part in some raids.

The humans ran several tests, height, identefication, and knowledge tests. That was only a few of them, they drew blood to see some unknown information. He never did get the results. Each Mantrin was put under simulated trails to determine there use on the ship, if they couldn't do much, then they were ship hands and grunts.

Stith has spent his training with tools, and with his anger from the humans giving him hard times, he ended up kicking the soldiers chest harder than he thought. Which meant he had to rush to the infirmatry to get the man under medical care. He was placed onto a list as a threat to the crew and deported off the ship.

That was the end of that ship as most of the crew then viewed him as one of those who hated humans and would help there enemies. It wasn't entirely true, he hated humans who hated him. This led him to the transfer to the ISS Clarkson since most of the old crew he was in resented him.

Now he wanders around checking around the ship, looking for small flaws or anything to occupy his mind from sniveling humans, but now with some odd promotion to cheif engineer has given a outlet for some anger issues he has abord the ship. But then came the new engineers, never saw a non-human in there lives and the questions were beyond beleif. He could only imagine what some other officers were doing with the new members of the ship.

Personal gear: A large toolbox, for the various ship components. A pair of handcuffs, akey to his room, Which he has to unfortunatly share. And a small headpeice in his ear so he can get ship updates for both his positions. Mainly his engneering job. A small photo of him before he was drafted, roughly six years ago.

(just to let you know about the alien race a bit more descriptively.)

{this race has a small snout of a mouth with a row of teeth. Long ears that are held out, but perk around with sound, and droop when sad. One is torn at the end. They have lengthy arms, but it is about five inches longer than the average humans. His digets(fingers) are skin covered bones with a little bit of flesh to round them out. They are average to humans. His legs are bent four ways. From the tri clawed hooved foot, it bends back, then it goes almost flat in a reverse knee sort of thing.(Refer to the picture for this.)A tail drags on the floor. with very little mobility in it. It is moreso dead weight that drags on the ground serving as a counter weight to keep Stith from falling onto his face each step.

Don't ask how he got a uniform on, it took a long time. He however showers with it on, so thats how it is cleaned, then it is the process of drying it. Just don't leg wrestle with Mantrins, there legs are their strongest muscle group while there arms are kind of weaker. http://th02.deviantart.net/fs10/300W/i/2006/081/c/1/Stith_Fanart_by_Titan_AE_Club.jpg

Name: Roland Gibbs

Desired Rank: Warrant Officer (Weapons/Vehicle Specialist)

Second Rank" Lieutenant

Age: 28

Appearance: Roland is a muscular man, athletic build with tan skin, shaved brown hair andblue eyes. He has a tattoo of two skulls wearing viking helmets on his right arm, "Never Forget" on his right forearm and a cross on his left arm.

Biography: Roland went into service right after he finished school. He made a career out of the military and has been given many awards, including a Medal of Honor which was given at the same time as his Purple Heart, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star, Valorous Unit Award, Soldier's Medal, Bronze Star. Along with campaign medals from combat tours. He also served in The Crimson Guard, an elite unit in the military, for three years, the medal is a silver skull with red jewels in the eye sockets.

Black Mark: Got into a fight while on duty, the other man was drunk but somehow it was pinned on him for starting the fight. So he was transfered to the ISS maintain vehicles on the Clarkson.

Personal Gear: Roland was allowed to keep part of his Crimson Guard combat gear. A piece of shoulder armor that is a skull on his right shoulder, the chest plate with a white skull painted on it and his old side-arm, an eight chamber revolver with a blade on the bottom and a rail on top. Attached to that rail could've been a scope but he added another blade.

Ushima - The Interplanetary Survey Service is not a combat unit - that being said, you could still be assigned to the Clarkson as an inter-service transfer from the Terran Union Army. The ISS uses a lot of surplus gear from the other services, including contra-grav jeeps, of which we carry four. As a Vehicle specialist, would you be able to maintain the jeeps?

You look like a possible security officer, but you'd be under Spirit's Breath. Is that ok?

I also need a written description of your character.

When editing your character sheet, please put new additions in bold.
Thanks! ^_^

In my game though, combat officers are line officers, while warrant officers are specialists, not usually serving line positions or leading troops (but could still have medals). But this ship will use the best possible person in any situation, (and Spirits Breath is right, impressive bio) so Ship's Main Security is yours, as Spirits Breath has offered it to you.

Enlisted crew is all npcs. Spirit Breath can have two junior npc officers (1 ensign and one 2nd. Lt.), two chiefs and forty enlisted engineers, for the Engineering department, enough for two divisions.

Ushima, for your security department you can have one junior npc officer (ens or 2nd. lt), one chief and twelve enlisted men. You'll draw on the crew in an emergency for anything larger.

I'd suggest naming the officers and chiefs.

Name: Aria Raegan

Rank: Lieutenant Commander

Desired Position: Ship's Doctor

Description: Aria is a petite female, about 5'8", with black hair and blue eyes. 34 years old. http://i.ytimg.com/vi/IbQXxNWNxyY/0.jpg

Brief Personal History: Aria's first thoughts after leaving medical school didn't involve the Interplanetary Survey Service. She expected her medical career to be like a dream, helping people and dealing with all kinds of interesting diseases and having little adventures with differential diagnosis. Instead, Aria found herself treating colds and minor cases of the flu, nothing nearly as exciting as she had hoped. Again looking for adventures of some kind, Aria left her job and joined up with the ISS.

Aria was assigned to the ISS Wallace, a moderately large ship. While on board, Aria found that she often would have to endure the wonderful comments made by the poor, deprived men on the ship, as well as advances by the captain who had an intense desire to be in a relationship with her. Figuring that this was the worst it would get, Aria ignored the comments. This eventually led to her Black Mark Incident a few years ago.

After the lovely mess that was the ISS Wallace, Aria narrowly avoided prison time and worked a boring job at an outpost on the boarder of the colonized planets. The work she did there was awful similar to the stuff she had left behind in her civilian life. This period was critical in the solidification of her personality and worldview. Aria's previous sadness had escalated to full-blown depression and her pessimism had advanced to an all time high.

Now Aria has been assigned to the ISS Clarkson. Her past experiences have made Aria weary of people, especially when they are in close proximity to her physically, and she has thus adopted a reserved, quiet, and shy manner. The only people Aria really ever talks to are her patients.

Black Mark Incident: While Aria was stationed on the ISS Wallace the crew and captain all made sexual advances on her. These attempts by the captain eventually accumulated into an attempted rape by the captain, to which Aria responded with what many would call “excessive force”, leaving the captain wounded and angry. The captain immediately contacted the higher-ups and told them a lie about how Aria had attacked him. His higher ranked friends and relatives in the ISS either believed him or were looking out for their friend's interests, because as soon as they landed Aria was taken into custody.

Personal Gear: Aria wears the standard uniform, but likes to keep her white coat with her so she can look at it and remember how hard she worked and how little she's gotten from it. Also with her and on her belt ever since the ISS Wallace has been her very own Vektor A3 (http://world.guns.ru/handguns/vector_cp1.jpg) 9mm pistol. While she probably will never need to use it, the A3, which she named Dorian, fills Aria with a feeling of security that is paramount to her success in her work.

Name: Dr. Jalen Van Montross

Rank: ISS Xenobiology Specialist

Desired Position: Chief Science Officer

Second Position: Xenobiology Survey Lead

Description: Dr. Montross is a rather unimpressive human male in his early to mid 50s in appearance. He is naturally hairless due to overexposure to radiation, and he has numerous visible cybernetic implants, the most obvious of which are his eyes and left ear. A result of some of his experiments has left him looking several years younger than he actually is (83), and the judicious use of cybernetic implants allows him maintain mobility like a man in his mid 40s. He often seems distant and impersonal, although he tends to become quite impassioned when discussing his experiments and projects. Very objective oriented, he tends to avoid small talk, although during his down time he will often follow random individuals around make note of their behaviour and interactions.

http://www.raging-gargoyle.com/storage/jalen.jpg

Brief Personal History: Jalen always stood out from the crowd, and tended to view all people, races, and species around him as little more than lab animals for observation. He has learned to temper this attitude and direct it outward for the most part where it can be useful. It is this inability to really empathize with anyone or anything that has allowed him to make so many contributions to the field of Xenobiology. He has been awarded the ISS Golden Probe twice for his contribution to previous survey teams, most notably the discovery and first contact of the first gas giant native race to the Terran Union, the enigmatic Aaoli. After this illustrious career, he entered a period of semi-retirement to the virtually unknown world of 8324d in the system of the red giant 8324 trinary system.

He probably would have lived out the rest of his life there, if a very studious ISS accountant had not found records of repeated deliveries of ISS specimens to the unsanctioned planet. The subsequent investigation and fiasco brought 8324d to prominence in the TU news circles and resulted in a thorough auditing of the entire system of Survey Team specimen recovery and storage. Afterwards, the ISS determined that Dr. Montross was too dangerous to be left on his own recognizance and quickly exploited the recall clause of this contact, forcing him back into active duty and assignment to the ISS Clarkson.

Fun fact: The Clarkson was Jalen's first assignment over fifty years ago.

Black Mark Incident: Through connections formed in his long career with the ISS, Dr. Montross organized a complex web of acquisition for "interesting" specimens recovered by Survey Teams. These specimens would be surreptitiously rerouted from their original destination to his private reserve on 8324d. There he would conduct numerous and varied experiments on them, in an effort to use a suspect and highly illegal merging of cybernetics, genetic engineering, genetic viruses, and cross-breeding to develop a functional "Immortality" treatment. While he was able to induce a significant slowing in his outwards physical aging, the treatments ravaged his internal organs, resulting in the requirement to have many of them replaced by cybernetic equivalents.

Unfortunately for Jalen, his misappropriation of ISS resources was discovered before he was able to complete his research. His notes and resources were destroyed, as were the majority of his experimental subjects. Many of the member species of the Terran Union called for his head, but he called in all of the favors he had accumulated over his service and that allowed him to get away with a severe demotion from his former rank of Commodore to that of Warrant Officer, and a posting to the Clarkson to make him disappear.

Personal Gear: Ocular replacement eyes (Besides normal 20/20, these implants allow him to see into the infrared and ultraviolet {although utraviolet causes him extreme headaches for some reason}, and to view things with a microscopic magnification of 1000x. In normal use, these eyes appear rheumy, but use of the microscopic function causes lenses to actually extend from the eye and is very obvious), left ear replacement (Allows for normal hearing and also stores a high-resolution video recorder. This recorder is voice activated and can store up to eight hours of video in his internal hard drive), internal hard drive with umbilical jack and universal port adapter (2 TB solid state storage. This primarily functions as storage for video/audio input from his ear replacement, although can be used for regular data storage as well, functioning as an external drive for a standalone computer), Mechanico-cybernetic replacements for his stomach, liver, gall bladder, small intestine, pelvic bone, left femur and right ulna (These function identically to the regular organs, and the bones are just harder to break). Top of the line hand-held computer.

Just to clarify, as it was a little unclear from your description. The name of your race is the Mantrin? And are they a fully accepted member of the Terran Union, or still in a first contact kind of position? Has much... study been done on them?

As Jalen would saying, "Hmmm, that's very interesting. Very interesting."

This is mostly ok - it's got me wondering why he didn't just retire, but it's an excellent black mark. Very high creep factor! ^_^;

Do you mind if I put a security escort on you when you're off the ship?

But you can't get busted down from commodore to warrant, as warrant is separate from regular officer ranks. You can be busted down to either captain or lieutenant commander. If you choose captain however, you're a staff officer instead of line officer, so if something happened to Capt. Bell, your position wouldn't change. The XO or another line officer would take charge.

You get the Guest cabin on Deck 1. Four lab techs, one ranked as chief. And charge over the other science labs as Chief Science Officer. And an ensign to watch.. er, look after you. ^_^;

Our first mission will be to check out a lost colony that's adapted most of a single continent for themselves. As it's not a first contact situation and their settlement is sort of suspicious, they're sending us instead of a better ship. Keep your heads down.

I was thinking that he would be a warrant officer to insure that he was not in the chain of command, but would still have the authority of office necessary to be the Science officer. But if you don't want him to be a WO, i'm fine with him being busted down to LC.

Should I name my NPC crew or are you going to handle that? Are we ready to start soon, or are there some specific roles that still need to be filled before we can begin?

I also realized that there are two pieces of purely scientific cyberware that should be added to his spread. Is there a problem with that? I'm thinking a gas spectrography suite built into his left eye (the microscope is in the right), and a data link HUD display so that he doesn't need an external monitor for the data in his storage, or hand held unit. maybe built in sensors in his hands that would allow him a functional AR rig for data access. Then he could drop the handheld unit. I don't really want to give him too much though.

I've got four players, that's enough to start. You can name your NPC crew - I'd suggest just the officers and chiefs for now. We're undermanned so you'll be basically our one-man Abby (http://www.fortressofbaileytude.com/Pictures/Abby_NCIS.jpg) super-scientist.

Wouldn't his nose be better for gas spectrography? Or at least one nostril? But I think an internal gas spectrograph is going overboard.

Why not set up the left eye as his eye-up-display? Although we do have omnis - TUA-surplus wrist omnis (http://www.eurotech.com/EN/innovation.aspx?pg=wearable) and handheld omnis (looks like a padded iphone). The wrist omnis have one add-on port and the handheld has two for sensors and adapters, but both can run apps. The favorite adapter is the holographic display with virtual keyboard.

Civilians have ar-glasses which link to a wireless network service to be your phone, computer and ar game console - but we're not set up for that.

Just to clarify, that was an agreement on being an LC?

Awesome. Abby is the best part of that show.

I was thinking about something like this (http://www.pranavmistry.com/projects/sixthsense/) as the interface, but if you would rather stick to the omnis, that's ok too.

That's like the ar glasses but for groups. That's great! Keep it.

I've gotten another character, we'll have to see what we can arrange.

Name: Mariko Kanzaki
Rank: Lieutenant
Desired Position: Navigator
Description: Female human, 28, 5'6", dark hair with highlights, glasses - also, picture http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v384/keikiru/002.jpg
Brief Personal History: Kanzaki Mariko knew she was going to join the ISS before she was born, or close to it. There had been Kanzaki's in the ISS before there had been an ISS as the family history went, and Mariko was to be no exception. Fortunately following her ancestors and exploring the stars seemed like quite a wondrous thing, and Mariko studied hard, excelled at her exams, at the academy and in the field, rising quickly in the ISS and her future looking bright.

At least until that problem on Kirby 6. Now her family wished she was dead, and she was assigned to the Clarkson, which was pretty close to it.

Black Mark Incident: On Kirby 6 Mariko (then a fairly respected ISS member) was invited by one of the indigenous shamans attend the yearly Change of Reality festival, quite an honor really as the festival celebrated not only the change of seasons but getting in contact with the spirits. While the native food and drink was suitable for humans, the native ceremonial beverages were another story - Mariko wound up getting into contact with a whole lot of things (spirits possibly included) in ways she never would have dreamed of in her wildest days at the academy.

This might not have been such a problem, but some anonymous person happened to record all of it, and when she got back to Earth she wound up being wildly popular on the internets, and wildly unpopular with command and her family

Hi Panzerkit! I was afraid you'd decided to pass on this after all. I'm glad you've joined. ^_^

Character approved. You can start posting. Better get to the bridge and make your excuses. I'm putting you in charge of Ops until I get someone.

My Leper Colony web site is at http://sites.google.com/site/exsgamesgroup/current-games/leper-colony and you can check out better layouts here (http://sites.google.com/site/exsgamesgroup/current-games/leper-colony/iss-clarkson). Most rooms are empty except for the bridge. As more detail gets added, I'll update the pics there.

Don't forget that you can put your game in The Roleplay Directory (http://role-player.net/forum/showthread.php?t=51) if you haven't
already done so.

Also, if you are still in need of players don't forget that you can submit your rp to be show cased as Rp Of The Week! (http://role-player.net/forum/showthread.php?t=905)

I'm going to hospital for a few days, nothing important. I won't be on Tuesday (1/5/2010) and even if everything goes well, probably not before Thursday (1/7/2010).

If I'm not back, I've asked that my body gets donated to mad science. ;)
