You wake up to find yourself on an island in the middle of the ocean made mostly of a massive white, stepped stone sitting on a sandy beach. It is impossible to tell the islands dimensions exactly, but if the rock were removed, it would be possible to see the ocean on the other side of the island. The rock itself, towers over the narrow beach by about 150 feet. On both sides of the island, in front of you and the other contestant, there is a cave-like entrance at the beach level. Inside, the tunnels flicker with firelight as they slope upwards towards the very top of the rock. The tunnels are too narrow to manuever well with bulky weapons and fighting within them could be difficult.

On the rock's exterior surface, water pools within the step-like basins and in some basins-the water flows down the rock and into the ocean in a gentle water fall.

You can just barely make out the sillouhette of a woman as she appears at the top of the rock tower. The sun shining high overhead makes it difficult to distinguish any of her features at all. However, when she speaks her voice is heard on both sides of the island as clear as if she were speaking next to them.

"Greetings! I, Mary Sue, have brought you here to this island to do battle. You shall fight until the death, or until one of you is rendered unable to move. If you wish, you may forfeit the match at any time. All wounds, even death wounds, will be healed once the battle has ended. You may fight anywhere you wish on the island but be warned: the tunnels are narrow and the beach drops off into a sheer cliff just ten feet out into the water. The winner of this match will then move on to the next round. You'll have fifteen days.....BEGIN!"

And with that, the figure vanished before your eyes in a blinding display of light. Once it faded, you and your opponent were left alone on the island, facing the rock and the battle field above.

Ruan’s tongue flicked out from her wide jaw – once, twice – testing the air tentatively.

Salt.

The taste seemed illogical, unexplained. She was currently oblivious to the gentle waves lapping a few metres behind her. She had yet to diagnose her surroundings, still disorientated from the experience of waking up in an alien environment. For most creatures, it might have been startling. For a blind one such as Ruan, it was disturbing. The ground beneath her felt unstable as she lifted herself up onto all four of her feet, struggling to balance herself as the floor seemed to shift beneath her weight. Her claws dug through the particles trapped by her toes, trying to identify them.

It took her a few hesitant moments before she guessed their situation. The heat that radiated across her back she took to be the sun, the salty taste of the air she guessed to be the nearby presence of the sea and the unstable grains she found herself upon, were likely to be sand. A beach of sorts, it seemed, but other than that she was clueless. Although she could hear the gentle pittering of running water, she could not fathom its source. It was of dire important that she tread carefully; drowning due to a careless step would be an embarrassing way for the battle to end.

Her breath came in short pants, husky wheezes as the glaring sunlight began to affect her. She was not used to the heat, stretching her wings uncomfortably as though trying to shake off the sweat she could already feel clinging to her skin. A guttural cough escaped between rows of dagger-like teeth but she did her best to ignore the dull ache resting at the back of her head and spreading through her chest. The environment had already placed her at a large disadvantage.

To her, the voice seemed to come from nowhere. Ruan raised her head to stare at what she assumed was the sky, confused at the location of this ‘Mary Sue’. As the last words died, silence took over the beach again and the dragon found herself wondering whether their judge was still there or not. Of seemingly more concern, she began to question the where-abouts of her opponent.

Her attempt at a challenging roar spiked pain through her lungs and produced only a few choking hacks, flecking the ground with her saliva and phlegm. The silence was beginning to put her in a state of unease and her first, few hesitant steps – towards what she assumed was just more empty beach – were filled with an obvious doubt.

Very nice post, Auki. I'm sorry you're opponent didn't get the opprotunity to post. You will be advancing to the next round. Good luck.
