BIRCH RUN

Nestled in the curve of a valley rests the small scenic town of Birch Run, population 338. Located at the end of a mountain road, it’s a place that time has forgotten and few venture that don‘t call it home. Surrounded on three sides by dense forest and a steep slope that leads to craggy foothills, it is a small piece of civilization cradled in the wild--the nearest town more than 30 miles away along a winding gravel tract. The residents live a private and simple life, the perfect escape from the bustle of city life or a haunted past.

This tranquil setting is also the home of centuries old myths and legends--the nights coming alive with the sorrowful bay of the beasts--their shaggy coats glimpsed through the break in the trees. Two bestial clans guard the men and women of the town, a decades old feud keeping them separate--one of the forest and one that dwells with the beings they protect. It has been many years since any danger has come to those that dwell here--neither man nor beast having been harmed by outside forces. A sense of well-being has fallen like a hood upon the watchers, their senses becoming lax and careless over time.

Players:

Wanderers: Legion of gypsy vampires thirsting to quench their desire for violence and blood by preying on hot-blooded beings.

Alpine Clan: Were-beasts that call the forest their home. Living in caves or small structures, they rarely travel into the town, their faces unknown to most. The people in the town fear the “feral” creatures, often losing livestock to their hungry young.

Timber Clan: Were-beasts that live among the town folk. A silver chain hangs about their necks, marking the position of the individual in the pack and preventing the bestial change from occurring spontaneously. Having incorporated themselves into the lives of the humans, each member plays a role in the life of the town, guarding its populace during the hours of night.

Humans: The were-beasts are loyalty-bound by their origins to the fragile beings, but the courtesy is not well repaid. Scouting parties, armed with silver-tipped weapons, often hunt the creatures out of fear or for sport.

Birch Run: location guide and history. (A collaboration of Nemesis and Bluemoon)

THE TOWN:

Within the beautifully lush and diverse valley there lies the settlement of Birch Run. Actually more of a village with a small population, it is a little over one square mile and steadily growing in the southern expanse of the forest. Rooted within the central construct of the old-styled town hall building and the population of the little suburban township, a great tree of majestic stature rises as its branches reach for the sky. It is as ancient as it is massive. A simple, but old and incomplete, highway leads into and out of the village, connecting it through and under the grand mountains to the outside modern world. Among the humans living in Birch Run, the clan of Were-Cats reside, known as the Timbers, unknown by their mundane counterparts. The Great Cats are charged to defend the mortals of Birch Run from enemies time has forgotten.

Nanny's Bakery, a town favorite, sits at the outskirts of Birch Run hugging the forest and wilderness. The heavenly scent of baking breads and pies hangs heavy in the air around her little cottage. The widow Nanny is known for her kind heart, good foods, and love of the "woodland spirits".

In the heart of town, the buildings of Gus' Gas Station and Kor's Garage are linked, neither establishment needing to boast their services. Filthy and perverted Gus serves as the only place to get fuel and womanizer Koroto DuClau is the only competent mechanic available to work on automotives.

One of the oldest homes in the town lies just on the border of the Run, its surrounding acreage melding into the forest itself. Occupied by generations of descendants for over a hundred years, the Azure Home was once grand, despite its small size. Gingerbread style lattice work details every corner and eave, with a heavy oaken door gracing the entrance. The windows were once of leaded glass, but as tragedy befell them, the broken panes were replaced with modern ones. Time has played a part in the home’s deterioration, but the lack of a loving hand has been the main cause of its recent lack of grandeur.

THE RUN:

The vast territories of wilderness, woodlands, and canyon sides stretching along the northern frontier is generally known as the Run. The primal forest creatures inhabit the wilds of rivers, land, and sky in abundance, traversing the hills, lowlands, and plateaus. Far into the valley's northern most mountains and upon its summit exists another grand tree. This "Eldest Root" grows on a small island, surrounded by the crystal clear waters of the Lunar Lake. This lake of the Blue Lady within the moon, feeds every river, stream, babbling brook and pond throughout the entire valley proper. The grounds are considered the most ancestral by the wardens who protect its secrets from those who have forgotten its existence. The wardens of the Run, the Were-Wolves known as the Alpine Clan, protect this treasure and resource passionately and with reverence. They are also referred to as the savage beasts of the land, and are the hunted Dire Wolves of legend.

TAINTED HISTORY:

Separating both the wild lands of the Run and the township of Birch Run, there exists a forlorn piece of scarcely remembered history in a territory that extends heavily from the sheer edge of the western canyon wall and into a horn like shape just touching the eastern wall of the valley. This twisted land of darkness and gloom is known as the Blight Woods and every denizen of the canyon has a natural in-born fear of its shadow and all that it embraces as the twilight of dusk descends against the valley of Birch Run. While not the largest territory, the vile marsh and swampland that lies deeper inside the Blight Woods, is said to hold the third of the connected great trees that exist in Birch Run's valley. Believed to be the most ancient of the first sprouted triplets, most inhabitants have forgotten the events that caused the grounds around the "Ancient Root" to have grown sour. A popular belief by all that are aware, holds that the hated creatures of pain and suffering haunt these woods. Foreboding, oppressive, and enshrouded in mists, the restless and nomadic souls known as Sanguine Wanderers stalk the grounds of the Blight Woods, believed to be spreading their unholy corruption. No living creature willfully exists within the forsaken Blight Woods for any extended duration of time, and those who do trespass, will not do so for long even within the smallest stretch of land.

Within the arms of the Blight Woods, lies the Ruined Cathedral and its Unhallowed Plots. Located a little over a mile away from the town of Birch Run, this earliest settlement of the valley was created of all three woods born from the three Eldest Roots. When the rot of the Blight Woods began to claim the citadel of worship, the original people fled, afraid that the Wanderers would claim them after death as the holy ground decayed and turned into a haunted sanctuary of the damned. Their ancestor’s remains lie within the tainted boundaries, part of the forgotten many, untouched by the passage of time.

Name: Ash Blackmane (Alpine Clan, pack leader's youngest son)

Appearance: Standing at 5'9” & weighing 180 lbs, his 21 year old physique is slender & muscular, his limbs long. He has chiseled facial features, a strong nose, & sharp eyes of brown with orange tints rimmed in a faint gold, bushy black thick brows resting above them. Wide, but full lips with few young whiskers poking forth, his face resembles that of a young wolf's. His jet black hair is wild & in thick spiky locks dropping down to about his dark brown shoulders, flying in all directions off his head, almost masking the slight points on the tips of his ears.

As a dire wolf, he has the wild hair tuffs along his shape like those found on top of his head as a man. His tail, back, & face wear a mask & smooth coat of charcoal, jet black with an oil like sheen. Ash's underbelly, insides of his limbs, & under his muzzle is of an ash gray coloring. The shimmering eyes of his as a wolf appear even more so like fading embers of coals & of milky amber than of his human shape. His lean body is that of a scout, built sturdily for speed & rough terrains, yet his muscles tell of a scrawny warrior yet to emerge.

Adornments: A gift upon his first & successfully completed will-full transformation into his alter-form, Ash's father presented him with a necklace of what is said to be vampiric fangs & his hand-forged 12” silver combat knife complete with it's leather scabbard & sharpening stone in the handcrafted pouch.

Some quick notes concerning the were-beasts:

--Were beasts are physically stronger, faster, and more agile than a normal human.

--Were-beasts can take on their animal form at will.

--Beheading will cause death, as will the use of silver in heavy doses.

--Normal wounds heal quickly as long as the weapon does not remain lodged in the body.

--Wounds created by any weapon made of silver will cause great pain and heal slowly--similar to that of a normal human's wounds.

--Humans can be turned into beasts by a bite, but they will change into their host's form without choice and only during a full moon. Their abilities are limited and they are looked down upon by the true shape shifters.

--If a bite wound is treated with molten silver before the first transformation, a human will be cured of the "curse".

--Due to the were-beasts vow to protect the humans in the town, they do not attack the citizens without good cause. Strangers, on the other hand, are free game. :)

So then shall we have a similar round table dicussion about the nature of our nosferatu/vampiric beings? I can lead the way with some information if you prefer... but I would like to hear your ideas first before you shoot all mine down ;)

LOL!! Okay--Here are some of my favorites I'll throw on the table for discussion:

Death can occur by beheading, extended exposure to the sun or stake through the heart.

Victims must be drained completely of their blood, causing death, before they turn.

A bitten victim is more susceptable to the mesmerizing call of their attacker.

Only the ancients can walk about during daylight.

No fear of holy symbols, but churches are avoided.

Although vampires can not turn into bats, wolves or mist, they do have the ability to "cloak" themselves, making their form almost invisible.

Only young vampires appear human--after 100 years, the changes to their body are obvious and can not be hidden. i.e... white transluent skin with blue veins, canine teeth long and exposed, nails long and yellowed, earthy smell

Can drink the blood of any warm-blooded creature, but they gain more strength from the more intellent forms.

LOL!! Okay--Here are some of my favorites I'll throw on the table for discussion:

Death can occur by beheading, extended exposure to the sun or stake through the heart.

Can they be set to pyre/burned to death as well? I would like to say yes =D

I like this, except I would like to play up their supernatural qualities of undeath. The stake in the heart "appears" to kill them... even allowing their body to decompose, but if the other 3 conditions are not met they will regenerate to a functioning berserker like state that needs to feed! That is if the stake is removed from their heart...

Victims must be drained completely of their blood, causing death, before they turn.

Totally agree with this! & they turn on the following sunset, or maybe the zenith of the next night.

A bitten victim is more susceptable to the mesmerizing call of their attacker.

Again, this is very special to me indeed. I still would like the undead to have a charm like gaze upon the living.

Only the ancients can walk about during daylight, for a limited time...

The way I have always worked a vampires age out is in the intervals of centuries... 0-100 years is still a fledgling, while the highest power is an ancient at over the big 500 year mark.

No fear of holy symbols, but churches are avoided.

I am kind of at a impassive stance on this... they are unnatural, & undead. Ideally holy items or even scriptures should work like putting the dead to rest. But I just don't know... wanna debate this one some with me? Maybe faith has some play in it?

Although vampires can not turn into bats, wolves or mist, they do have the ability to "cloak" themselves, making their form almost invisible.

Another place I am at the crossroads on... I kind of like the idea of alter-forms, demonic & all eerie & creepy. Vampiric shapeshifting has always been a fun concept to me... maybe age allows them more salient abilites & powers? Debate?

Only young vampires appear human--after 100 years, the changes to their body are obvious and can not be hidden. i.e... white transluent skin with blue veins, canine teeth long and exposed, nails long and yellowed, earthy smell

I like this... perhaps we could also incorporate this idea into their feeding cycle as per popular mythology. Or the things could be able to appear more human like, mirrors & reflective surfaces could show what they truely are? As invisible stalkers, mirrors & reflections could also give the ghostly indicator of their location?

Can drink the blood of any warm-blooded creature, but they gain more strength from the more intellent forms.

Perfect... maybe Were blood gives them strength but is foul tasting, & human's blood is exciting & sweet, like a sugar rush?

These are a few of my ideas too, also look above in your quoted post. I added things along the way to help me think better ;)

Vampires can create others like themselves;

Slaves: they are souless undead ghouls that also serve the masters will, but can be directly controlled & used like a marionette, seen & heard through as if the sire was present themselves. These ghouls have limited self preservation abilities & are highly agile & totally subservient. These lowly creatures may never know independence from their host & are destroyed once the sire is.

Subordinates: that are servants & allies, subservient to their sires because their will is dominated & the lord/lady vampire whom sired them has some limited control & limited clairvoyance through them (created after the death of a mortal, the vampire infuses it's own blood into the prospective fledgling). Upon the death of the sire, these undead become self sufficient & capable of creating their own Subordinates & Companions. Many Subordinates plot against their masters & mistresses in secret.

Unlike Slaves, the Subordinates can be mortal as well. Those who willingly drank of the vampire's blood become infected to it's call, just like those who survive it's bite. As if they are victims of charm spells. True "undead" Subordinates hate these "Custodians" & day watchers, & seek to undermine their master by putting their living pets in peril & making them suffer.

Companions: are the greatest examples of trust & loyalty a vampire can show & if the recipient is a willing victim of undeath, this union will be powerfully uniting of the creatures. The Companion has all the benefits of the sire & enjoys the immunities as well regardless of age. The sire & companion are eternally linked & the destruction of one greatly cripples the other for several weeks. A master/mistress, lord/lady Vampire may have one companion per century of existance, up to five total. Each sharing of the sire's power as if they were the sire. Once a sire is destroyed, any remaining companions become severed from each other & totally free willed like the Subordinates. They lose the power & abilities of the sire upon it's destruction, gaining only what they have accumulated in time of existance.

Just some of my old concepts =D. Let me know what my lady of the BlueMoon thinks?

I forgot about the burning of the body to ash as a form of vampiric death--most definitely must add that to the mix! :) ...and I will accept the staking as a temporary means of death if no other method of destruction is used. It brings to mind a lot of movies where the mummified vampire corpse soaks in the fresh blood of a victim and regenerates.

I also agree with the charm-like gaze that a vampire has over the living.

Although I do not like the adversion to holy symbols for vampires, I will give in as long as the objects are only effective if the wielder is a true believer of the faith. Deal?

I have always found the transformation of a vampire into a bat to be a bit silly. I like the idea of transforming into a mist or a wolf, but that might make our story confusing if there are more wolves. We do need to discuss this one more fully. The concept of age being a factor in their abilities is a definite plus.

As to your suggestion concerning a vampire's appearance after feeding, I am guessing you mean to imply they look more human after a blood meal? I am all for a mirror showing their true self...or should we stick with no reflection? Hmmm....

Bitter and sweet blood...perfect!!! :)

I use to watch a show when I was younger that had a grandfather and his two grandchildren fighting a vampire and his legions in the English countryside. It was great and your descriptions of vampire classes reminds me of it. I am more than willing to allow the addition of subordinates, slaves, day-watchers and companions. :) :)

How about another blood lust type for the nosferatu? Call it, Kin-Nectar: a vampire feeding from another of its kind enduces ecstasy in both & both creatures are linked telepathically. The feeder can at will read the thoughts of the provider & issue commands as well in which the provider is compelled to obey. This is a sure way sires dominate their Subordinate vampires & invade their waking thoughts seeking out treachery & crushing the fledgling vampire before rebellion can arise. This level of intimacy is deeply revolted by most vampires that are not in a companionship. The exception would be if a Vampire sends its subordinates forth to harvest blood on behalf of it & feed upon them when they return to the liar. Of course the subordinates would resent this & might even lead hunters to the liar to engage their master/mistress.

Another glance at age, before I make a chart or two :)

O - 99 years is a Fledgling Vampire. Level 8+3
100 - 199 years is a Mature Vampire. Level 9+3
200 - 299 years is an Old Vampire. Level 10+2
300 - 399 years is an Elder Vampire. Level 11+1
400 - 499 years is an Ancient Vampire. Level 12
500 - 699 years is an Eminent Vampire. Level 13
700 - 999 Years is a Venerable Vampire. Level 14
1000 years & on is an Immortal Vampire. Level 15

These titles are reflective of a vampire's respect, or more likely fear shown towards the older of it's kind. An older vampire will always seek to disrespect its younger peers by calling them fledgling regardless of what age they maybe. More examples of vampiric dominance over those it considers it's lessers, & the mind games they play to ensure obediance & discipline.

If you have any ideas of better titles I am all ears... I have exhausted my thoughts, but I will add some types of stats to go along with them too. :) More about abilities & age relationships to come :)

I like the faith based concept... truely blessed areas... like cathedrals & temples, as well as the grounds of them may be unpassable or cause harm like minor sun exposure. I was thinking the shapshifting would be like more monstrous than little bats & rats... like large nasty things or hybreeds of the animal... don't know, I like vampires being able to fly some, without wings it seems impossible. Perhaps this is also a salient ability gained as a boon of unlife? I don't know... we will mash these potatoes I am sure.

This is a current listing of Alpine's Known in the valley of Birch Run's proper. I will be touching up upon this list frequently & it should act as guideline for the basic lore & history of the werewolf clan that inhabits "the Run". As needed & possibly sooner, but also sometimes later, I will touch this up so it flows better & includes all the latest news regarding your favorite heroes, anti-heroes, & villains of the Alpine Pack.

The Cliffjumper Line

"Eldest Root" Alpine Cliffjumper III (99) male, former alpha. Grandfather to Pine & Maple, his son Spruce Sr. father to Pine & Spruce was mudered in mortal combat over the alpha position with the newest lone wolf to join the pack.

(There is a generation gap here due to the great Hunt lead by Birch Run's human hunters which almost exterminated the clan of the Alpine's. However their children survived. Later, when Oak challenged to become Alpha, he would kill the last Alpha pair, Alpine's son Spruce I or Sr., in a savage display of rage & cruelty that would mark his reign as Alpha until Hemlock defeated him.)

Pine Cliffjumper (48) male. Son of Spruce Sr. & Yew Softdown.

Fir GoldPelt (45) female

Palm Cliffjumper (27) female

Cedar Cliffjumper (25) female

Spruce Cliffjumper II or Jr. (21) male

Alpine Alphas, The Blackmane Den

Hemlock Blackmane (40) male

Maple Cliffjumper (45) female. Daughter of Spruce Sr. & Yew Softdown. Once mated to Oak the alpha of the time, she was placed behind him as he abused his position as clan leader. Once Hemlock & Ebony, a mated pair of loners, joined into the clan by Eldest Root's blessings, Oak thought to seize an enticing Ebony as his own 2nd wife. Challenginging Hemlock, Maple secretly told Root her desires no matter the outcome of the duel. Much to the clan's surprise, the new young lord of their clan, Hemlock was victorious & Maple would comfort him after still losing his former mate to the spared Oak. She had chosen Hemlock all along in the duel & wanted her grandfather to kill her should Oak have won the challenge ...

Oak Sternwood (55) male. The sadistic & cruel former alpha male who challenged Hemlock & lost. Refusing to bow to Hemlock, he left the clan. Ebony taking up with him, the pair venture into the Unhallowed Grounds & the Blight Woods fading away for two decades.

Ebony Nightshade (40) female. Lusted after the current alpha of the time known as Oak while mated with Hemlock. She instigated the conflict that would result in Hemlock defeating Oak to her surprise, & her gamble destroyed Oak's family with Maple & united her with the current alpha Hemlock.

Soot Blackmane (23) female. She is the daughter of both Hemlock & Ebony, born after Ebony followed Oak into self imposed exile. For whatever reasons, Oak did not maul & kill the pup of his bitter rivalry. Perhaps for Ebony's sake, or perhaps in some atonement for his past brutalities.

Wenge Sternwood (20) male

This is a current listing of Alpine's Known in the valley of Birch Run's proper. I will be touching up upon this list frequently & it should act as guideline for the basic lore & history of the werewolf clan that inhabits "the Run". As needed & possibly sooner, but also sometimes later, I will touch this up so it flows better & includes all the latest news regarding your favorite heroes, anti-heroes, & villains of the Alpine Pack.

The Cliffjumper Line

"Eldest Root" Alpine Cliffjumper III (99) male, former alpha. Grandfather to Pine & Maple, his son Spruce Sr. father to Pine & Spruce was murdered in mortal combat over the alpha position with the newest lone wolf to join the pack. Gray eyes framed by hardened lines around them, silvery hair flowing back in thick locks, & possessing a remarkably well kept beard & mustache, this wizened older man is sturdier than most teens for his immense age.

A Large, solid gray dire wolf, his eyes are hardened & gray. He is the son of Spruce Sr. & Yew Softdown.

Fir GoldPelt (45) female. Eyes of sky blue, her Sandy brown fur of her back fades smoothly into a radiant golden fur which becomes the softest white of clouds on her underbelly.

Palm Cliffjumper (27) female. BlueMoon please provide me with a sample?

Cedar Cliffjumper (25) female. BlueMoon please provide me with a sample?

DECEASED ... Spruce Cliffjumper II or Jr. (21) male. Of faded gray fur with golden highlights like his mothers. His blue eyes shimmering, the boy also enjoyed the sandy blonde hair as a human youth, having fair skind lightly touched with a tan from the Plateaus of the Alpines.

Alpine Alphas, The Blackmane Den

Hemlock Blackmane (40) male.

Maple Cliffjumper (45) female. She has brown eyes with golden flecks in a sunburst pattern around her irises. Silky smooth fur, her darkest coloring being a deep crimson along her back with her auburn hair fading into a creamy white underbelly. Challenging Hemlock, Maple secretly told Root her desires no matter the outcome of the duel. Much to the clan's surprise, the new young lord of their clan, Hemlock was victorious & Maple would comfort him after still losing his former mate to the spared Oak. She had chosen Hemlock all along in the duel & wanted her grandfather to kill her should Oak have won the challenge …

Willow Sternwood (28) female. Prideful & willful, she is her mother's daughter in every way. The resemblance is strong between the two, the younger woman favoring her mother’s striking looks, her eyes a mirror reflection. Standing a bit shorter and with the same regal air, her slender body is rigid and tense, her short brown hair framing an oval face, unruly waves accenting her frown.

Aspen Sternwood (26) male. Temperamental & arrogant as the youngest lead hunter. Large gray & auburn highlighted fur & with brown eyes in wolf form.

Red Sternwood (25) male. The idolizing younger shadow of the mighty Aspen. He has golden eyes, the middle sized wolf, bears deep red & crisp white fur.

Ash Blackmane (21) male. He is my main character in the epic Birch Run RP.

The Young Family

Poplar Moonsong (39) male.

Hazel Dawncrest (36) female.

Fig Dawncrest (18) male. Rusty reddish brown fur still fluffy in his late teens, having bright green eyes, & the young frame of a cub.

Cherry Moonsong (18) female.

The Lone Wolves (Renegades & Outsiders) of Blight Woods

The humans who occupy Birch run are more than just fodder & filler for the world of darkness created by BlueMoon & Nemesis. They also have their own part to play in this struggle of dominance, greed, & survival. As such, I have already been introducing my supporting cast of normal people that have enriched the setting we are creating within the storyline of Birch Run. While this is not an entire list of everyone who has appeared in the setting, this will serve to illuminate some of the reoccurring characters we are likely to see, & this will also provide a status update for all people who become guest stars of this RP.

Villagers of Birch Run

Selia “Nan/Nan-Nan/Nanny” Hampton (55) female. The jolly, plump woman with her golden hair in curly locks, rosy cheeks, & eyes of deep blue is widowed. Her cottage is the bakery of Birch Run & the voluptuous woman wearing a white apron spiraling around her thick curves while she twirls & hums her tunes is a gentle legend of the township. Her baked goodies & treats are the delights of children's hearts, young & old. Often times she is heard speaking of her Forest Friends & Spirits of the Woods, when her window cooling pies disappears. But not in tones of displeasure, she finds comfort in the company since the passing of her late husband, for the Friendly Spirits always leave her with a bouquet of the rarest mountain flowers found within the most remote places of all the woodlands Birch Run has within its valleys.

Gustard “Gus” Riley (45) male. The owner of the Gas Station & Convince Store that shares it's building with the Mechanic's shop called Kor's Pit Stop, Gus is not exactly the ideal man for any job. A portly & robust man, pale skin with thinning hair, furry arms with a sloppily buttoned stained shirt threatening to explode from his gut's pressure. The large man enjoys his cigars through browning teeth, stubby fingers clutching the wet tobacco product at times, while smoke rolls around his pear shaped head. Frequently looking the younger women up & down with his lustful gaze, the old pervert is also known to keep a pornographic magazine rolled up under his arms, or tucked into his back pocket when he actually helps a customer around the store he owns. Crass & egocentric, this fellow is everything that typically creeps the women out & makes the men impatient, but somehow the residents of Birch Run tolerate the owner of the fueling station, but thankfully, he isn't the only store in which to find convenience at. Gas on the other hand is his business & livelihood!

The Hunters of Birch Run (Wink Wink)

Mamba Buckles () male.

Hector Diaz () male.

Gray Hawk () male.

William Stephan () male

Jimmy Winthrop () male.

I have had homework from work all week about signs & CTA flagging, proper procedures, & also demonstrating I know how to perform the flagging tasks as directed. I apologize about the delays & excuses... I am having the worst time learning all this... Maybe Security was a better trade considering how much of my life this is now consuming. Please forgive me as I get this all together.
