Plot: An expedition into Brazil's deepest rainforests and rivers brings back an injured creature that baffled scientists. They hope to study it, but as it seems intelligent and almost human in its own way, it still needs help recovering from its injuries. So they find someone who might be able to help... a girl with a lot of academic promise, and that they can keep quiet about this oddity to keep the media away until they learn more... But will she let them? And, as the creature starts to show signs of higher intelligence than expected, will it let them?

Character Name: Elisabeth “Betsy,” Reed, PhD.

Gender: Female
Age: 28
Race: Human

Background: Betsy was the second, and youngest, child of Bartholomew and Melanie Reed, MDs. Both of her parents were renown surgeons in their respective fields, her father neurosurgery and her mother in pediatric surgery, a trend that her older sister, Mary, followed by entering cardiothoracic surgery. The fact that Betsy was uninterested in medicine (at least on the human level) made her the black sheep of the family. Betsy’s parents have since become masters at subtle jabs and prods trying to push her into the family business and, “back on track.”

Betsy’s passion, however, has never lain with fixing people. Since her early years, she has always had an interest in animals; how they live, how they move, and how they interact with each other and others outside their species.

Naturally gifted in academics, Betsy graduated from high school at the age of 16, and has since worked arduously at joining her desired field. Thus, despite her parents’ misgivings, Betsy pursued first her undergraduate degree in biology, followed by her PhD. in zoology with an emphasis on zoosemiotics (animal communication). She did also spend some time studying physiology, and knows some basics when it comes to providing medical care for animals as well.

During her doctoral studies, Betsy began a line of research involving interspecies communications, and through her dissertation, obtained a fellowship to join a team of researchers in the South American jungles. So, a few days after the commencement ceremony, Betsy packed up her equipment, few personal items, and went off to find adventure, and hopefully, a discovery that would create a career.

Personality: Betsy can often be perceived as the quiet, “nerd,” preferring to spend an evening with her nose in a book over going to social events. That perception, obviously, is a bit hasty and simplistic. It’s true that she is analytical in nature, someone who wants to, solve the puzzle even when none may exist, and that she tends to approach things in a clinical nature.

When one gets past that initial impression, however, Betsy CAN be funny, if not quirky. Her eye for details frequently lead her to have a childlike wonder for the way the universe and world have organized themselves in such an inexplicably perfect way. She frequently becomes excited about something new, and can sometimes try to draw others in to her enthusiasm, much to their dismay. She also doesn’t always notice the cues that indicate they aren’t interested, though this isn’t for lack of social skills; it’s more due to the fact that she is simply too taken in by her interest to pay attention to much else.

When it comes to all things outside her field of study, Betsy can, admittedly, be shy. It’s not that she won’t be outspoken when passionate about something. It’s more that she isn’t comfortable with how /she/ fits in to things that others are generally excited about, like tv shows and popular cultures. Normal social interactions sometimes leave her feeling somewhat confused.

Description: Betsy is about 5’8”, and of thin build. She has shoulder-length, straight blonde hair and clear blue eyes that sometimes end up hidden behind glasses when she doesn’t have the motivation to put in contacts. Her smile is just-slightly crooked, something that people who know her tend to find, “cute.” They also know that her wrinkled nose usually means she is either frustrated at a puzzle she can’t quite solve, or downright angry. She generally dresses casually, jeans and a t-shirt, as this is best suited to her work. Having grown up in a well-established, well-off family, however, means Betsy knows how to clean up well when the occasion calls for it, and she does have a wardrobe that boasts several designer outfits. Only one or two of those have made it to Brazil with her, however. You know, just in case.

How's this? :D

Name: Fynnar

Gender: Male

Age: about 20 (but they mature fast and live shorter lives)

Species: Unknown to Man, they call themselves Singers. They live in the water in the most remote of rivers in the rainforest, known only barely by the isolated tribes and legendary even with them. Mostly they have avoided Man, and kept to their own nearly-inaccessible territory… Until one was washed to more common waterways by a great storm, and caught…

Description: Standing roughly 5’6” with feet flat on the ground, over 6’ when normally standing (which is on their toes), and 7’ if the tail is included. Feet are webbed, with long strong toes that they keep together when dashing on solid ground but can spread like paddles for swimming. Hands are long-fingered, with short but sharp talons, also webbed. Tail bears a wide webbed crest at the tip and last half its length. Sleek but well-muscled. Narrow human-like face with fin-like ears, slitted green-gold reflective eyes with two lids like a crocodile, medium-long greyish hair/mane and skin much like that of a catfish in greys and silvers except for along the back of his limbs, spine, and tail, where scales grow up to an inch long and carry a more greenish-blueish hue.

Skills: Singers can hold their breaths for long periods of time, much like crocodiles, and hear well and communicate mostly under water. They can fish with the ease and speed of a dolphin and many similar methods (including sonar), yet climb as well as lizards on trees and slippery rocks. Though they breathe air, they live mostly in the water and venture on land to rest, play (much like otters do), and occasionally forage on things other than fish. They den in “burrows” made of branches and woven leaves, and when need be, they use stones and sticks as tools. They can run like lizards on their toes, but only do so for short distances, as their legs aren’t made for distance that way.

Background: Fynnar was hunting fish with his kin, who live in family groups, when the storms hit. Being an older male, and ready to find his own mate to join him in their group, he tended to wander further from the rest in case of scenting hints of another group. However, it meant he was furthest from their denning site when the waters rose and roared with a sudden flow from upstream, and he was washed into the nets of fishermen of a remote village. As his kind breathe air, he struggled hard to still get a breath while tangled, and the netting cut into his flesh, injuring him. After the storms passed, the superstitious fishermen pulled in their nets, and didn’t know what to do about a creature of legend like him, and so cut the lines and dragged him into the rainforest where they thought his kind belonged, being “spirits” of the waterways. Some scientists were exploring around that time, and when they asked of unusual creatures they were told about him… and were led to where he’d been left, only to find him still there, in bad shape. They snatched him up and took him to a bigger village nearby where they had better resources… and staff and fellow scientists to help…

Looks awesome! I'm quite excited to get this started... I guess maybe we should populate some NPCs, mainly scientists we might see around the research site, or would you prefer just doing those by ear as we go?

Either way is fine by me. Maybe make up some names to throw around and establish here? Like who's her boss, who are the guys who found him, etc. Names and jobs we can post here so we can refer here to keep them straight, like a reference sheet?

Good plan. I'll start on those tomorrow. I think I might actually head to bed pretty soon, actually.

List of NPCs (feel free to PM me any that you would like me to add to this, for example, maybe members of Fynnar's family that might make appearances... or to start your own post with more. :) )

Dr. David Cardoso

The man in charge of the expedition for which Betsy works. He is, in fact, a pharmaceutical researcher who obtained a grant to study several endogenous species that are of interest due to their potential for assisting in curing Multiple Sclerosis. As such, most of the team he assembled consists of other pharmaceutically-oriented disciplines, such as chemistry and medicine. He did, however, choose to include a zoologist and botanist, both useful in pointing out new potentially useful species and in navigating Brazil's deep rainforest. In order to receive continued funding, Dr. Cardoso is employed by a large pharmaceutical company, Osmosis, Inc., for whom he has provided several important discoveries.

Dr. Cardoso is a middle-aged man, half of Brazilian descent, with salt-and-pepper cropped hair and a neatly kept beard. Standing at about 5'9", his physique is naturally thick, though not unfit. He is almost single-minded in his search for the cure, mainly due to the fact this is own wife ails from the disease. He is analytical, sharp, and stern, and has been known to do almost anything, even things that entered dark grey areas and bordered on unethical, to obtain the information (and results) that he seeks. Generally, however, these breaches in ethics have been regarded as well-worth it by a community of his peers, and no disciplinary action has ever been taken.

Jason Ensfield

A former Army Ranger, Jason was recruited by Dr. Cardoso to become his head of all things security. This includes making sure everything in his laboratories is kept safe, as well as ensuring his and his team's personal safeties, given that they sometimes wander into areas where civil unrest is common.

Jason is in his late 30's, approximately 6'1" and built. He has strawberry blond, well-groomed hair, and hazel eyes.

Dr. Emery Beckett

Dr. Beckett is one of Dr. Cardoso's researchers, specializing in chemistry. He is in his early 30's, friendly and quick-witted, one of the team's more laid-back members, and a charmer, to boot.

Dr. Beckett is approximately 5'11" and thin. He has curly dark hair and green eyes. Dr. Beckett is English and still speaks with that accent.

Dr. Parvati Bahkta

Parvati is the team's resident botanist. She is in her 40's, and though generally friendly, can become quite upset if someone dares touch her research, for fear that they may upset the organization of her things.

Dr. Kahkta is short, about 5'2" and a bit round. She is of Indian descent and has long, beautiful black hair that is usually worn in a braid. She wears glasses.

Dr. Jeremy "Lo-Jack" Weston

He's 6', lean but muscular, wearing Kahkis and always with a gun on his shoulder and machete in his belt and a camera ready in his shirt pocket, as he knows the dangers of the rainforests (like jaguars, bugs, spiders, snakes, etc). He's a bit of an extreme biologist and avid fisherman, hoping to discover something new and special, surprise the world. However, his contract says anything he gets will be owned by Osmosis... after all, they're funding his free-traveling lifestyle and the many expeditions he gets to go with. Tempermentally, he's a bit intent on his own agenda, stubborn and focused, yet having a drive to get his questions answered that boarders on obsession. Not a lot of compassion for animals, as they aren't human and like Osmosis he feels humanity's needs are of higher priority. Has a minor Australian accent to his voice, and knows a lot of languages, so he helped interpret on other expeditions and still does here for those who don't know the local lingo.

Doctor Gerald "Jerry" or "Doc" Hildebrandt

He's a gruff middle-aged medical man, talks with a bit of a Midwestern accent, being from Minnesota. He's the team's main medic, an expert on parasites, diseases, and poisons of South America's wilds. Despite his grumbles on treating expeditions like this, he likes being in the rural and wild areas where he can demonstrate his knowledge to others. He hates to be wrong, though.
