Rated M for graphic violence and possible gore as well as possible anything else that could make an RP mature, including, but not limited to, drugs, alcohol, coarse language, sexual situations, etc

So this will be the first adventure for the characters. This will primarily be used as a way for all of us to get our feet wet doing this on RPA, but more importantly, to work out any kinks in the posting methods and to refine them.

A little background for the players. Castle Greyhawk is a 13 level dungeon created by TSR which can be played as one complete adventure or each level can be played as it's own little mini adventure. For now, we will just be doing the first level. We will however, return to the castle later on to tackle some of the lower levels as well. The whole adventure is lighthearted and comical in nature and is not a typical hack and slash adventure.

As there is only one character sheet in your character threads, there will be no need to post a link or the sheet in this thread. Simply post "In" or "Out"(I am assuming you're all in XD) and I will edit in the links to the sheets in this post as you do. You do not need to wait until your sheet is done to post that you are in as we won't be starting the IC until we have a minimum of five completed sheets.

And don't worry if the IC starts before your sheet is 100% complete as there will be ample opportunity to get it done before the dungeon as the set up for the adventure will be roleplayed mostly without dice rolls(possibly none) and you can still do IC posts with an incomplete sheet. However, all sheets must be completed by the time the party enters the dungeon.

There will be times when I will post dice rolls in this thread. This will be a DM check of some kind and one or more party members may receive a PM from me after I do this telling them about something that has happened. For example, if I roll a secret door check for a character that is successful, I will PM you telling you that the character has spotted a secret door. It's up to you to post about it and/or inform the rest of the party of your discovery.

And of course, you may ask me questions about this setting which I may or may not answer depending on the question?

I have a method to bring you all together nice and easily and can do it IC if you prefer. It is a little cliche as it;s the lord sends out a call for adventurers and you guys are the ones that show up. This way, it doesn't matter as much where you're form and whatnot as you all meet up at the Castle. Any of you can know each other before this point, but I suggest you discuss that amongst yourselves.

Either way, I can start the IC anytime. Just say the word

Meinolf
10-17-2011, 06:17 AM
Well, it is 2 a.m. where I am -- on a Monday morning no less. I think I would prefer to start this after I get some sleep at least. :D However, yes, I am ready to begin. My character is pretty well developed, and I've got a pretty good idea about how I will play him. As for where to begin, I am cool with whatever is comfortable for everyone. I tend to prefer jumping straight to the adventure, but I can come up with why my character decided to answer a call to explore Castle Greyhawk just as well.

Shepherd

I'm fine with using the cliche.

So the IC is up http://role-player.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21341

Now how much you want to post about your journey to the castle is entirely up to you. I did corral you all a little for the sake of getting this going so your first post can be as long or as short as you want it to be. You can also feel free to post dialogue between your characters or anything else you like that happens up to the meeting with the redhead boy.

If anyone wants to ask about the mists with anyone before the boy, or anything else for that matter, shoot me a PM so I can give some answers; will be kind of like a mini co-op post. But I will say this, the redhead boy can lead you in the right direction.

John
10-18-2011, 08:27 AM
So I posted what happens for Meinolf slapping the kid.

Couple of things, 1) each of you has 10 gold pieces, not that you need it right now anyway unless you want to attempt to bribe someone for information.

Also, I will attempt to post in response to what everyone is doing as soon as they post. In the event that multiple people post before I can get to them, I will respond to everyone in a single post. And for the most part, till I bring my character into this, think of my posts as more narration as I will be controlling all the NPCs.

For dialogue posts, IE asking someone on the street questions, you can PM me and I can give you the responses to post along wit yours, or, you can simply post it in the IC and I will reply to it there. And I do ask that you give a few other people a chance to post before you do again, just os everyone is getting a chance.

Your help is always welcome, Meinolf :)

I'll get a post up within the hour or sooner.

John
10-18-2011, 09:56 PM
Digging the posts so far guys. I would like to wait until a few more people post before I post what the kid says.

I know I kind of thrust y'all into this, giving no time to work on interpersonal relationships, so you will have to work it on the fly. Like I said before, my thought was to get this going as this is just an introductory module for us to all get our feet wet.

If you choose not to help the kid, who's name is Culum McCreedy, you may investigate the mists. But I HIGHLY advise against it at the moment.

Also, I just now realized that I haven't mentioned anything about experience points and levelling up. I am not going to keep track of points. Levelling will be determined by me and your success will be determined mainly on how well you play your character. Regardless, everyone, who survives, will gain a level at the end of the first dungeon.

Meinolf
10-18-2011, 10:01 PM
More like Gollum McGreedy, am I right? :D

Well, my character would probably be more interested in the mists, as I've mentioned before, but if a good reason proposes itself to investigate the dungeons, I am sure he will be a valuable member of the party. <snicker>

i have a great idea involving that boy and his father...

A race to find the father in the dungeon. everybody for themselves, everybody put in a portion of their gold, or an item with approximate value, ofc... winner take all. (this is actually my character's way of ensuring that the father is rescued, by appealing to the gnome's greed, and the elf's good heart.) you see, my character was an abused orphan. so she was pissed at how it was turning out :) and it is in her .. their, character :)

John
10-18-2011, 10:36 PM
It is a good idea, but, I wold prefer that you all work together. And I do have a way to entice the Gnome. I'll post again after the next person does

You don't need to, it still works. But remember, this is mainly to get us a system that works for all this, and we do have a few people who have never played DnD before. So I think it best that y'all work together... for now.

(s_evil) Looking forward to posting again, but I'll wait till after the update. With Glider challenging the Gnome, I guess my character wouldn't need to threaten to cut his hands off if he laid his hands on the cup. After all, the gold pieces were Eccawen's, and she'd rather help the orphan than put the Gnome in his place.

^^; Your character is already going to be an interesting addition to the group, Meinolf. Hopefully you won't make your character go through with the death threats you proposed for people making Gnome jokes.

When we go all out against each other (if possible), I propose the Gnome versus Eccawen, Glider and Kass/Amili!

Clearly for creative purposes, of course! (evil chuckle)

John
10-18-2011, 11:00 PM
I just had a thought for anyone who's interested, and it would be a good way to try out some post/dice roll combinations while we wait for others to post. I could set up some arena styled threads, GMing some monsters for all of you to fight. If you're interested I mean. If anyone is, shoot me a VM or PM so we don't clutter this thread too much. We could also do some PvP battles for fun too.

Just to clarify on something from Korvis' post: Mendel never actually bent down to help himself to the coins. Don't get me wrong, he was going to, but he never made the movement because he noticed the crowd gathering around and didn't want to draw in more trouble from the local authorities.

That would definitively make this campaign true to the [M] rating!

So I just saw the image for Eccawen. She's pretty hot, so I've elected to have Dryden make socially awkward advances towards her.

I have a battle enraged picture of Eccawen :) I love it, but it doesn't really seem bard-like. I added it during one of my battle posts when a monster really kept bugging me. I think only psycho's would be interested in her after that XD

Edit: Wouldn't the guys hate it if Eccawen admitted her interest in girls? Talk about a buzz kill.

Mendel and Dryden's cruelty to the boy is what bothered Eccawen. The boy was a real tear jerker, alright. Enough to make Eccawen's heart practically melt with sympathy.

Agreeing might be mean, but I can't help nodding in response. A person can be smart, but their decisions stupid. Does that make the person a fool? If so... I can only imagine the comedy that's to arise later on. I have a few scene's up my sleeves already.

Oh, and I just want to say this as I haven't and I know how a party of varying alignments can get, so, please no stealing from or attacking another character without the player's permission first.

And the sooner we get into the dungeon, the sooner you get another gift, one for the party. It's a useless item really, but ads a little bit of realism, as much as that can be achieved in a DnD campaign XD

Awean: I don't remember ever seeing any rules for AD&D about side-effects of alcohol. I would rule that 1-3 drinks will raise your reaction adjustment from Charisma by an equal bonus (1 drink = +1 bonus, 2 drink = +2 bonus, etc.). After that, however, it all changes to a penalty. Some alcohols may count as a different number of drinks.

Hmm, now that I think about it, I actually have a document detailing carousal rules.

CAROUSAL RULES
Earn extra experience points equal to the amount of gold spent while carousing.

VILLAGE: 1d6 x 100 g.p. limit.
SMALL TOWN: 1d8 x 150 g.p. limit.
LARGE TOWN: 1d10 x 200 g.p. limit.
METROPOLIS: 1d12 x 250 g.p. limit.
CAPITAL: 1d20 x 300 g.p. limit.

Thieves can spend 50% more, and their party members can spend 25% more.

ROLL 1d20: CAROUSING MISHAPS

1. Make a fool of yourself in public. Gain no XP.
• Roll Charisma check or gain local reputation as a drunken lout.
2. Involved in random brawl.
• Roll Strength check or start adventure d3 hit points short.
3. Minor misunderstanding with local authorities.
• Roll Charisma check. Success indicates a fine of 2d6 x 25gp.
• Failure (or inability to pay fine) indicates d6 days in the pokey.
4. Romantic entanglement.
• Roll Wisdom check to avoid nuptials.
• Failure means 1-3 scorned lover and 2-8 angered parents.
5. Gambling losses.
• You spend twice as much money on this carousing attempt.
6. Gain local reputation as the life of a party.
• Local carousing doubled, unless Charisma check failed.
This is due to barflies and other parasites.
7. Insult local person of rank.
• Roll Charisma check. Success indicates the personage is amenable to
some sort of apology and reparations.
8. You couldn’t really see the rash in the candlelight.
• Roll Constitution check to avoid venereal disease.
9. New tattoo.
• 1-3: "Hell, it could be worse."

• 6: "What the hell is that?"
10. Beaten and robbed.
• Lose all your personal effects and reduced to half hit points.
11. Gambling binge.
• Lose all your gold, gems, jewelry.
• Roll Wisdom check for each magic item in your possession.

John
10-21-2011, 05:45 AM
Adn I too have posted. Feels so mall and insignificant next to Shep's.

Okay, you guys have a couple of options, and I'm only giving this info as this is the first dungeon. You can of course talk to Cullum if you like. You can also look around the shop. Anyone who wants to go looking around, post here, tell me where you're looking 1st or 2nd floor, and I will PM you what you find if anything.

Shepherd
10-21-2011, 05:51 AM
I will search the second floor, since Torvah has no care about the child's dad at the moment.

And what does the shop sell? Anything that some... less that scroupulous people might want to help themselves to?

John
10-21-2011, 05:56 AM
The shop appears to sell Mage robes, and I will PM you what you find after a few more people post what they want to do.

Enigma
10-21-2011, 06:03 AM
I'll look around the first floor at the robes and other things. Do I spot any concealed or hidden doors?

John
10-21-2011, 06:19 AM
I'll PM you what you find, but will wait till some more people post their actions. I have a feeling y'all won't want Mendel to search by himself XD

But, Cullum will answer your question right after I finish typing this.

Lord Tully
10-21-2011, 03:28 PM
I would also like Gilder to take a quick look around the room, so that's what I posted. Do I need to roll to find something useful or is that a DM roll?

John
10-21-2011, 05:46 PM
I'll do any rolls that are required in this case. And, I will post them and send you some PMs when I get home from work tonite.

10-21-2011, 05:49 PM
I still have to figure out what Eccawen will do in the meantime. Descending into a dungeon alone seems like a very foolish thing to do, so most likely I will have her explore the first floor so she is near Cullum just in case he needs anything.

I wouldn't want him to think she would abandon him, or flake out on finding his dad.

Anne Bonny
10-21-2011, 06:05 PM

Korvis

Korvis
10-21-2011, 07:21 PM
or you can ready my summary!:

we got there, met the person who was supposed to meet us, pretty much immediately after that we met the waif who was begging for coins, who happens to have a little quest associated with him. his father has gone missing in the dungeon, because he was trying to find the supposed 1000g hidden in there. Mendel the gnome basically pissed everybody off by taking some of the money the boy had accumulated from his begging in his cup, and it almost came to blows right there, but a crowd started gathering, and nobody seemed to want to draw the attention of the guards, so the situation was quickly diffused, and the boy led the group of adventurers to a shop, which happens to have a bolted trap door in the middle of the room. the boy says he has the key, but he bolted it after his father didnt come back. now a couple of us are scavenging the shop, looking for something usefull, while i am standing by the trapdoor asking if there is anybody who wants to come with me right now, because the boy's father could be dying at any moment.

basically :)

Meinolf
10-21-2011, 07:43 PM
Correction: Mendel took no money from the waif -- he just called the waif a lying con-artist and slapped him. That is what pissed everyone off. From there it went downhill, with one half-elf calling Mendel a cobbler. There will be repercussions for that.

10-21-2011, 08:19 PM

John
10-22-2011, 02:14 AM
OMG! I posted again.

I have decided, that if you want to split up in the dungeon, you can. I should be able to GM 2 groups through it, though it will considerably reduce the time it takes to get through it, which I don't have a problem with.

I will say this much, it is possible to get through this entire dungeon without a single battle, and I really don't think any of you will die, though it is possible.

I'm going to create a second OOC thread for this. The new one I create will be for dice rolls and will make it easier to RP some of the situations that require a dice roll for things other than combat.

I will also use it for things like the roll I just did for Sabine and other DM related rolls that may occur. I likely won't tell you what I'm rolling for though.

I just think it will make a lot of the posting run smoother for the RP. Something I'd like to try. If it doesn't work, we can always eliminate it

Meinolf
10-23-2011, 11:43 PM
Mendel is pretty much set up to enter as well. :)

Just as an aside, Mendel won't be introducing himself to the rest of the adventurers in this bout of prefacing ... he has no reason to, and it is not in his best interest to do so. However, Eccawen and Gilder should know his name from his first entrance. I don't remember him having uttered it since then tho'. So, if anyone else wants to know the gnome's name, they are probably gonna have to ask him directly.

Your character could be questioning people in the market, and stumbled upon the store we're at. You could either enter or watch from the doorway as the trapdoor is being opened. Then you could join us any way you'd like.

Meinolf
10-26-2011, 08:09 PM
You detect evil and wish to investigate. XD Just remember that this is a light hearted romp; you don't need to put too much effort into your posts -- maybe post why you are at the fair, and that you sense something wrong near the ... is this a store? Hell, I've been calling it a cellar. Well, anyways, you sense evil coming from the building that a lot of people just entered, and decide it is your duty to try and right any wrongs taking place.

Overall, I am not sure what your writing style is, but this is a pretty generic lead-in for you to start off, and you can develop Alicia more as we delve deeper into the dungeon. :)

Edit: One thing that I feel is very important to mention is how detect evil works -- mostly because my character is the only evil one in the party.

Some characters--the paladin, in particular--possess a limited ability to detect alignments, particularly good and evil. Even this power has more limitations than the player is likely to consider. The ability to detect evil is really only useful to spot characters or creatures with evil intentions or those who are so thoroughly corrupted that they are evil to the core, not the evil aspect of an alignment.

Just because a fighter is chaotic evil doesn't mean he can be detected as a source of evil while he is having a drink at the tavern. He may have no particularly evil intentions at that moment. At the other end of the spectrum, a powerful, evil cleric may have committed so many foul and hideous deeds that the aura of evil hangs inescapably over him.
Unless he is committing a blatantly evil action while Alicia is using her Detect Evil power, he won't show up. At least not for a few more levels. ;)

Tune

Good on ya. :D

As for myself, I need to figure out what I am gonna do. I've written myself into a bad position, where I am reacting too much. I need to get Mendel into a position where he can act of his own volition instead of following another's lead.

I think I am gonna leave that post where Mendel smelled Irin -- even though she isn't in the room yet and it creates an incongruity in the timeline. But Hell, even just writing that last sentence makes it all the more apparent how bad that dwarf smells, which is all the funnier despite the mistake on my part. :D So, with that goof behind me, I shall have Mendel move into the room proper. Which means I need to send Naz a pm to find out what Mendel sees as he delves into the dungeon.

John
10-27-2011, 04:47 AM
If you guys want to separate, you can. I don't think you should roll for it. I would hate to see your frontline fighters end up in the same group. There is also a chance that on e group conceivably get to the end of the dungeon before the other, but I'm game if you are.

As for the co-op post, if it has to be changed, Kendric can edit it easy enough. The only thing I want to mention that with the way it's written, to break it up it will be a little disjointed as it's a case of each of you responding to the other's dialogue in turn. I put down a quick post for you since I am still typing away at that Greyhawk lore. To clarify, Mendel -- oh so politely -- asked Eccawen to open the woman's door, and Alicia was asked to open the men's door. I didn't know which door was which, so I just guessed that the left one was the woman's room, and the right one was the men's.

I honestly thought you disappeared between the passage, Korvis; I even read your post a few times. Which way did you character go?

...Eccawen would get the door with the busty woman XD Poor Alicia; maybe whatever is behind both doors will collide together and kill themselves? A person can only hope.

Korvis

lol i went through the passage that was straight ahead. or to the west, to be specific.

Oh, well since Shepherd, Auki and Awean have yet to post, you could ask them in a VM or PM if they'd like to join your character. Or maybe ask Anne if her character is inclined to join you? I'd hate anything bad to happen to your character if Kass journeys alone.

Korvis
11-02-2011, 07:19 AM
well, im not too entirely worried about it. my character is, but she would never show it. naz said we could creep through the dungeon without a single fight, so if i must, ill continue and stick to the shadows... but yeah. ill prolly pm shep and anne and see if they wanna come with.

If you would be so kind could you roll me two percentile dice in the Dice Thread please. One for Move Silently. One for Hide in Shadows

Speaking of Auki, Shepherd and Awean, one suggestion I sent to Auki was that Mendel would mark the passage of where he has gone with some chalk or something -- that way they can quickly find their way to us. The only problem is that since I sent Auki that pm, I realized that Mendel doesn't have any chalk. Regardless, the idea is still sound. ;)

So if anyone else here wants to try and mark our passage so that any stragglers can keep up, it couldn't hurt none.

Korvis

At one point, I had figured out how percentage rolls worked... since then... I forgot it @.@

Still, I think I can see that I failed at least one. They are on the opposite ends of the 100 spectrum, lol

Meinolf
11-02-2011, 04:47 PM
MS 75% and HiS 19%. Your skill in both move silently and hide in shadows is at 50, so normally you are trying to roll 50% or less.

Edit: Since we are on the topic, I believe someone mentioned another way to do percentile die than what I am used to, wherein we multiply the two numbers. I suppose if we are multiplying then the numbers would be 35% and 9%, respectively. Not sure which way Naz wants us to do it, so I've just been going with how I've always done it.

John
11-02-2011, 04:57 PM
I was taking the first die as the tens column and the second as the ones. Not sure, my math isn't that good, but if we multiply the numbers, some numbers could never be rolled using 2 ten siders. 33 comes to mind

Meinolf
11-02-2011, 05:50 PM
Yeah, I've always done it as you just described, but I remember someone saying they did it by multiplication. So I would raise the question just in case. :)

Oh, I posted all that Greyhawk stuff I typed out last night to our social group. Hope everyone enjoys the long ass wall of text I posted there, lol.

John

So expect a post from me very shortly. Just to double check, Alicia is opening the door with the guy on it. Eccawen is opening the door with the lady. And Kass is hidden in shadows, making her way down the western corridor.

So now we do have two heading west. And I am curious as I'm wondering how many will want to explore the other paths as you all know which way your goal is.

Oh, and I should mention, the rumbling noise is only coming from the ladies room. Mis, expect a PM from me soon

Does Alicia just turn around and leave or what?

John

Whatever you like, you could leave, you could make your way to see what's making the rumbling in the other bathroom, you could use the facilities. entirely up to you

John
11-04-2011, 01:56 AM
Everyone who is going to help needs to roll initiative. In this case you can post again.

Edit: Well it's going for Alicia, but it hasn't actually attacked yet as I didn't make my surprise roll.

John
11-04-2011, 01:59 AM
Nope, do it IC along with a what you're doing to prep for the battle type thing. As in how you've been doing it in the battle thread

Meinolf
11-04-2011, 02:05 AM
Naz, I have a doubt. Would you say it is in Mendel's best interest to attack the toilet monster, or to simply step back and enjoy the show?

Tune
11-04-2011, 02:05 AM
 I got lucky with the initiative roll.

Meinolf
11-04-2011, 02:06 AM

Tune
11-04-2011, 02:07 AM

John
11-04-2011, 02:12 AM
One thing Miss, if you read my post, I kind of cut Alicia's action, so she isn't actually in the bathroom with Eccawen. She's still in the other bathroom. Though I have a feeling it doesn't change much.

John
11-04-2011, 02:20 AM
Sorry I missed your post Meinolf. But you do have your answer.

Tune
11-04-2011, 02:21 AM

Edit: Nevermind, it would mess up the initiative roll.

Meinolf
11-04-2011, 02:22 AM
Alright, so it poses a threat and Mendel may already be in its cross-hairs.

Rolling initiative ...

John
11-04-2011, 02:23 AM
And, forgot to mention, the rumbling noise has stopped

Tune
11-04-2011, 02:28 AM
My post is a total mess now >< Just look over it, I guess. Or either delete it

John
11-04-2011, 02:34 AM
No it's not. It's still usable. Change the person she's talking to to Mendel, who would be close by. And add in that right after you say that, the rumbling stops.

Tune
11-04-2011, 02:35 AM
I'll edit it, then remove the initiative roll to make more sense out of it.

Meinolf
11-04-2011, 02:36 AM

Meinolf
11-04-2011, 02:52 AM
Whoops, it seems I made a big mistake in my post -- the monster never left the boy's room. I'll fix my post in just a moment to have Mendel see the snake head at the door striking at Alicia.
