I'm currently reading The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, and even though I'm not even halfway I can honestly say it's an AMAZING book. It's beautiful and really does make you want to read on and on.
It's about this kid. Daniel, who's dad one day brings him to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books where he gets to pick one book to 'adopt', so that it will never be forgotten again. He picks The Shadow of the Wind written by a fairly unknown author named Julián Carax. Daniel can't tell anyone about this secret place and he has to protect the book for life. As he starts to read the book, he's intrigued by it's author and he wants to know more about him and find more books written by him, but that turns out to be rather difficult. And as he tries to find out more about this mysterious Julián Carax, he discovers that a lot of people he meet in his life resemble the characters from The Shadow of the Wind...
So, what're you reading?

I'm currently reading (very slowly) The Three Kingdoms saga (China's Iliad, basically) and a steampunk urban fantasy novel called Perdido Street Station.
The former is about the Three Kingdoms Era of China's history.
The latter is about a rogue scientist attempting to restore the wings of a creature called a Garudah, who apparently committed a crime so heinous that no human equivalent exists, and tore off his own wings as punishment. It also follows a sculptor named Lin, a khepri (red-skinned humanoid with a scarab beetle for a head) who is commissioned by a revolting mob boss to sculpt a statue in his likeness. In the process, this larvae shows up somewhere (I haven't gotten that far yet) that feeds on a hallucinogenic drug. Eventually, it matures and...goes on a rampage or something.
It's neat. If you like gritty, urban novels and/or steampunk, I recommend it. It's one in a series of three, but they can all be read independently of one another.
Currently it is 'The Hang Man' by I don't remember who. It's been really good for now, very interesting to get the perspective of an SS Ubersturmbannfuhrer during the second world war. You really get a strange perspective of how they thought back then, and how everyone got manipulated by Hitler's charisma and Goebels' propaganda.
Also simply in English class I am reading Pride and Prejudice on my own, which is quite interesting though it hasn't entirely sparked my full interest yet. With the class we are reading 'Men's Search of Meaning' which also has a background of the Holocaust and it's been very interesting so far.
And then on and off I am reading The Picture of Dorian Gray, which has been very good as well. Very dark with a lot of description and since it is an older book the wording is very unique, a very nice look into their way of writing I think.

I've decided to give Arundhati Roy's "The God of Small Things" another go.
I first tired to read it a few months ago and I honestly just... really loved it. It's a beautiful book and her writing style is just so smooth and honest and gritty (she has this very original way of describing things), but then this sudden child abuse scene sprang out of nowhere and left me really disturbed--I just couldn't read it anymore. HOWEVER, I've decided that I'm going to give it another go.
I'm currently reading The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, and even though I'm not even halfway I can honestly say it's an AMAZING book. It's beautiful and really does make you want to read on and on.

So, what're you reading?
Fuck, double post. Ah, well, I'll risk this.
Anyway, I seriously want to read that book--I have for a while, actually. I've skimmed through it a few times (haha, I know, I shouldn't be doing that). But you know, REALLY want to--basically, like, NEED--to read that book.

Quite possibly the MOST AWESOME short story I have EVER read. I found it as a child in a little scifi anthology book and begged my mom for an hour to buy it for me, carted that thing around til the spine fell apart and I lost it when we had to run. I'm not one for buying books twice normally but if I could find that same little collection I would jump on it like a rabid monkeyopossom.

Do not forget the thorn-clad path (or something to that extent, not sure how to translate it) by Gunther K. Koschorrek.
It's a WWII journal, with a bit of a twist. It was written by a German veteran of the eastern front, a heavy machine gunner. Very gritty, gets across the message of the horrors of war very well. Sometimes it's kind of hard to believe this kind of stuff can actually happen; I had the same when I was reading a french account from Napoleon's invasion of Russia. And it's quite unbiased, too, as far as I can tell.

Oh I know. I fell in love with my big blue hardbound illustrated version I first picked up when I was about... sevenish? But then I had to give it back to the library. I think I cried for a week. But I was in a used bookstore the other day and I found a pretty red hardbound illustrated version!
@ Merry: Oh my god, I usually hate all those trendy, Stephenie Meyer-wannabe New York authors who have decided to churn out book after book about sexy vampires/mythical creatures--Holly Black, Melissa de la Cruz and, my least favourite, Cassandra Clare--but The House of Night is actually pretty good. I've only read the first book, mind you, but I was laughing SO fucking much; I think it's the whole mother-daughter thing.

You should think a book about building a cathedral in medieval england would be boring. But it aint.
Ken Follett wrote The Third Twin! I was reading that about a week ago but gave up on it after the first part. I found the main character Jeanie boring and somewhat Mary Sue-ish. I'd like to try "Pillars of the Earth" though, give Follett another try.
Currently reading The Impressionist by Hari Kunzru. I'm only on the third or fourth page and it's kind of boring me. I'll probably be dropping this one. The next one on my list is The Declaration by Gemma Malley and then Farenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, which I still have YET to finish. I don't understand why I can't finish this short book! xD

After getting past Tom Bombadil in the the book it gets some much easier to read, i mean i have read the three of them and am looking to get the Simarillion for Christmas so i can read that then i plant to get the Children Of Hurin.
But the start of The Fellowship of the Ring is coolness, and it's description is what makes it fun.

I've read the Hobbit, but I've struggled with LOTR. Much to my dismay, I haven't finished it yet >.> Partially because it drags so much.. Even the archaic English lit I have to read is less winding and descriptive at times.
Even greater luck to you for the Simarillion. A friend once told me it was so dull she passed out on the first page. And both my parents (who have read the whole series) have warned me against it.
The Hobbit was phenomenal though. Still exciting time and time again. ^_^

I got it for Christmas last year but never got round to reading it so figured I probably should before this years Christmas considering the number of books I've asked for. It's pretty good though.

It was absolutely amazing.
Reading 'The Heroes' - Joe Abercrombie
at least I can actually leave this book without feeling all depressed all the time >_> About a 3 day war. Up to the second day in it. As always great characters, that I care about.
Nice to Shivers in there as well, sure I may not have liked how he ended up at the end of Best Served Cold but damn is he great when he isn't the POV character and not being in his head.

Joe Abercrombie's "Best Served Cold", Lynne Truss' "Talk to the Hand" and H P Lovecraft's letters (vol 2) - I usually have two or three books on the go at once...
The Walking Dead volume...5 I believe and just finished The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaal by Edgar Allen Poe. 29 pages of WTF. And the ending was such a ripoff.

How are you finding Best Served Cold Sy23?
I just finished it, V - totally brilliant, like all of Joe's stuff. Only the title is a disappointment, since it telegraphs the plot a bit - he usually has much more obscure references in his titles, like "the Blade Itself" (from Homer)... I can't wait till the guy does some more stuff.

The way I look at the title to 'The Blade Itself' as a sort of reference to Ninefingers.
Gotta say Best Served Cold is my least favourite of his books. Apart from the absolutely brilliant transformation of Shivers from the start of the book to the end.

It was never specified as an English class and around where I am it is not all that common. One of the required books for my Gothic Lit/Cinema is Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights (choice). As for mine I'm reading Dracula between the choice of that or Frankenstein and saving the Bronte books for later.

I just picked up I, Lucifer by Glen Duncan; I hear it's neat-o, so I'm going to give it a try, even though I don't know what it's strongly about (I didn't read the summery, just read a quote that piqued my interest), but so far it has that charming wit I like, plus it's a narration by Lucifer (y'all know what that means~ O;), and "he's" basically telling his "life". It sounds fun, so I'll see when I read it~...
I'm in the middle (I think...) of Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte at the moment. Very confusing and hard to follow the characters XD I have to re-read pages frequently. And the storyline imo is just unrealistic and frustrating. However, it's supposed to be some big american classic so I'm forcing myself to finish it.
