The Second Annual Rumble on RPA

Ladies and gentlemen, it's time for what is sure to be an epic event. We, the staff of RPA, are proud to bring you the second annual Rumble on RPA.

To enter, simply post the name of the character you wish to use with a link to your character sheet thread(you may also link us directly to the post). Entrants will be accepted Until January 14, after which, we'll get the festivities underway.

This will be a single elimination event, meaning, once you're out, you're out. The fighters will be randomly paired up against one another (in the event of an uneven amount of entrants, one entrant will receive a first round bye, this will also be randomly selected. The returning champion, should she enter will automatically receive a first round bye if we have an uneven amount of competitors.) The winners in the first round will then go against each other, and so on until we have a winner.

Once the pairings are determined, the judges will set up a thread in The Colosseum, along with a description of the terrain you will be fighting in. Please note that there may be other things that can hurt you that aren't your opponent

Now for the rules.

1) You may enter only one character in this event. For returning competitors, we ask that you use a different character than the one you used last year. The only exception to this rule will be our reigning champion Auki who is welcome to use the same character.

2) Each battle will last 16 posts(8 to each combatant). Please note that once your opponent posts, you have 72 hours to post a reply. This is being done in the interest of time. If you will be unable to get your post up in time, you must contact the judge for your thread to be granted an extension. Please note that if you ask for an extension and we see you around posting in Downtown or other parts of the forum, the judge reserves the right to revoke the extension

3) The decision of the judges is final. Arguing with a judge or whining because you don't like a decision is not acceptable. The judges for the Rumble will be; Awean8, Mary Sue, Keeper of the Inn, Nazgul, Kris, Wattz and Merry Gentry.

4) If you feel that your opponent is in violation of the rules, PM the judge for that battle.

5) Battles will be judged based on the following criteria;


Writing style
Effectiveness of combat (How realistic/logical is the combat. Do the battle sequences make sense?)
Control of the field (how well the participants use their surroundings and respond to events)

The rules for godmodding can be found here (http://role-player.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9351).

Now obviously most of the things listed there are being allowed. Now while I believe that all of the listed abilities and items can be make godmodding easier, the fact is, it's all in how you use an item that makes it godmoddish.

So here are the rules on godmodding from the Battle Arena Guide;

1: *No God Modding. This includes: the stealing/copying an opponents moves, using guns, using spells such as reflect, cure or Knights of the Round, never getting hit, and stating that you actually hit someone or controlling their character.



Now, allow me to break this down.

Curative Spells/Items. Curative spells are allowed, but only if they are not full recovery spells. They cannot cure anything worse than minor wounds. These spells may also NOT be used instantaneously. In other words, you will waste an entire turn healing yourself, thus forfeiting an attack phase. Conversely, curative items are still restricted unless they have an equally adverse effect.

Undodgable Attacks/Abilities. ANYTHING that says "forcing the opponent to" in your character information will immediately be scrapped, and any mention of "impossible to dodge" in the battle itself will not be looked upon favorably. Whether it's a spell like Ultima, or some last-ditch near-death ability from which the opponent has "no escape," it's against the rules. EVERY ability must have some way out.

Projectile Weapons. Guns, bows and arrows, and other such high-speed weaponry is considered moddish. Be careful when using projectile though, because if you overdo it, you'll be busted for godmodding. If your opponent can never get near you, you're godmodding. This isn't The Matrix. We can't all dodge bullets all day long.

Blue Magic. Or, as listed above, the copying of your opponent's moves. This rule has also been okayed, but blue magic may ONLY BE USED WITH YOUR OPPONENT'S CONSENT. If your opponent says no, and you use it anyway, you get shut down for godmodding.

Summon Spirits, Pets, and other secondary parties. Generally frowned upon as they tip the scales in your favor, turning a 1v1 fight into a 2v1 fight. Again, this is something that can ONLY BE USED WITH YOUR OPPONENT'S CONSENT. Summon spirits are obviously far stronger than your character would be. Fighting one is really godmoddish enough to begin with, but fighting one without even being asked if you want to is ridiculous. For something like that, you still need consent, even if your character wouldn't be active during the summoning.

Superdodging. In short , it's understandable. But in any thread that has more than eight posts, you better be taking a hit here or there. If you dodge all of your opponent's attacks after his/her fourth post (as in, four each), you will be shut down for godmodding. This doesn't mean you have to take hits often; it means you have to take hits once in a while. This doesn't mean you can take one hit at the start of the fight and dodge everything else, either. Be considerate. It makes things a bit more exciting, and creates vulnerabilities. It also makes the fight slightly more realistic as well.

Super (or "uber") characters. You can't load your characters down with so many abilities and so much "impenetrable" armor that it would be realistically impossible for anyone to damage you. Just because you may avoid giving your character unstoppable weapons and unstoppable armor doesn't mean that an overload of "lesser" equipment is proper, either, nor is having an average character, save for ONE ULTIMATE SUPER INSTANT-DEATH ABILITY.


And finally, the most important of all, controlling your opponent. This is by all means ENTIRELY off-limits. Even if you're throwing an attack at the character, and you say that he dodges it and then you attack again, you're godmodding. What if your opponent had wanted to take that hit? The VERY MOST at which you can control your opponent is to the extent of DIALOGUE. Even then, you may only do so with approval. You simply cannot control anything anyone else does. That's the largest difference between RP and RPB.(roleplay and roleplay battle)

So basically it all boils down to how you use something. If you want to use something that is godmoddish, you better ask your opponent. Obviously the Uber character rule has been somewhat suspended for this as some of the character are pretty badass. But remember, in the Rumble, badass doesn't always win tournaments.

over the course of the battle she will find out how to defeat your dragon using the methods i have devised

and my character is miniscule in comparison to the other characters so that requires me to think harder about defeatingt them

B-but, our final showdown wasn't like that...right Auki? The conclusions that Amleth drew based upon educated guesswork and knowledge of his own equipment weren't terrible...were they? I mean...It was nominated for best fight and everything... T_T
I feel almost as if you and I are were aiming for roughly the same thing when we designed our characters with sickly health. I wanted to force myself to come up with clever uses for lots of equipment, whilst you had to stretch a lot further to stay fresh. Ruan IS of course still a goddamn dragon, but size isn't what wins the day here.

I'm glad to see this is on again. With any luck, it'll lead to even more competitions in the future. I hope I survive long enough to have fights with rivals old and new alike!

I think I'm going to retire Amleth and his world for now and let someone else take a shot. I'm thinking I'll go with the fighting 'n drinking chief character I had started work on sometime ago. She needs some alterations and whatnot, but I feel like she'll be a pretty worthy contender for this year's gold when all is said and done.

Although their styles will be widely different, both Amleth and my new character - Annachan - make use of larger arsenals. I Imagine Annachan's won't be quite as big though, given that whereas Amleth had little more than his gear and wits, Annachan will be backed by relatively powerful physicality. What I must ask though, is whether or not she can be permitted to bring various random foodstuff into each fight. I kind of want to play up the whole chief idea by having her come into each fight while preparing (or having prepared) a meal, but I understand that implementing such a thing into the actual fight - without having mentioned it in her bio - could be considered potentially unfair.
For instance, If Annachan was trying to fry a particularly feisty lobster, being able to use it as a projectile might be breaking the rules. Perhaps I shouldn't be crying dom before the verdict though; what's your take Nazgul?

Choosing the winner between you and Auki was the hardest decision I ever made as a judge. I won't tell who I choose, but just so you know that you two did so awesomely it was SO hard to choose from.

Personally, I'm most scared of the humans. Otherworldly creatures, fine, you know they're going to be dangerous in a weird way. But with humans you just never know what they're going to pull...

I have been asked to reiterate the rules on godmodding as they apply to the arena. So to make sure that everyone, including myself understands it, here we go.

The rules for godmodding can be found here (http://role-player.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9351).

Now obviously most of the things listed there are being allowed. Now while I believe that all of the listed abilities and items can be make godmodding easier, the fact is, it's all in how you use an item that makes it godmoddish.

So here are the rules on godmodding from the Battle Arena Guide;

1: *No God Modding. This includes: the stealing/copying an opponents moves, using guns, using spells such as reflect, cure or Knights of the Round, never getting hit, and stating that you actually hit someone or controlling their character.



Now, allow me to break this down.

Curative Spells/Items. Curative spells are allowed, but only if they are not full recovery spells. They cannot cure anything worse than minor wounds. These spells may also NOT be used instantaneously. In other words, you will waste an entire turn healing yourself, thus forfeiting an attack phase. Conversely, curative items are still restricted unless they have an equally adverse effect.

Undodgable Attacks/Abilities. ANYTHING that says "forcing the opponent to" in your character information will immediately be scrapped, and any mention of "impossible to dodge" in the battle itself will not be looked upon favorably. Whether it's a spell like Ultima, or some last-ditch near-death ability from which the opponent has "no escape," it's against the rules. EVERY ability must have some way out.

Projectile Weapons. Guns, bows and arrows, and other such high-speed weaponry is considered moddish. Be careful when using projectile though, because if you overdo it, you'll be busted for godmodding. If your opponent can never get near you, you're godmodding. This isn't The Matrix. We can't all dodge bullets all day long.

Blue Magic. Or, as listed above, the copying of your opponent's moves. This rule has also been okayed, but blue magic may ONLY BE USED WITH YOUR OPPONENT'S CONSENT. If your opponent says no, and you use it anyway, you get shut down for godmodding.

Summon Spirits, Pets, and other secondary parties. Generally frowned upon as they tip the scales in your favor, turning a 1v1 fight into a 2v1 fight. Again, this is something that can ONLY BE USED WITH YOUR OPPONENT'S CONSENT. Summon spirits are obviously far stronger than your character would be. Fighting one is really godmoddish enough to begin with, but fighting one without even being asked if you want to is ridiculous. For something like that, you still need consent, even if your character wouldn't be active during the summoning.

Superdodging. In short , it's understandable. But in any thread that has more than eight posts, you better be taking a hit here or there. If you dodge all of your opponent's attacks after his/her fourth post (as in, four each), you will be shut down for godmodding. This doesn't mean you have to take hits often; it means you have to take hits once in a while. This doesn't mean you can take one hit at the start of the fight and dodge everything else, either. Be considerate. It makes things a bit more exciting, and creates vulnerabilities. It also makes the fight slightly more realistic as well.

Super (or "uber") characters. You can't load your characters down with so many abilities and so much "impenetrable" armor that it would be realistically impossible for anyone to damage you. Just because you may avoid giving your character unstoppable weapons and unstoppable armor doesn't mean that an overload of "lesser" equipment is proper, either, nor is having an average character, save for ONE ULTIMATE SUPER INSTANT-DEATH ABILITY.


And finally, the most important of all, controlling your opponent. This is by all means ENTIRELY off-limits. Even if you're throwing an attack at the character, and you say that he dodges it and then you attack again, you're godmodding. What if your opponent had wanted to take that hit? The VERY MOST at which you can control your opponent is to the extent of DIALOGUE. Even then, you may only do so with approval. You simply cannot control anything anyone else does. That's the largest difference between RP and RPB.(roleplay and roleplay battle)

So basically it all boils down to how you use something. If you want to use something that is godmoddish, you better ask your opponent. Obviously the Uber character rule has been somewhat suspended for this as some of the character are pretty badass. But remember, in the Rumble, badass doesn't always win tournaments.

To my understanding, yes. But I think it factors more into the three qualities. I think if one is lacking but the other two are superb you'll be fine and so forth.

But if all but one is lacking then you're more likely to lose and then if all are bad/terrible you might have higher/lower chances of winning. To the judges I think they focus more on descriptive, grammar, and punctuation skills than actual battle victory.

As both a contestant and a judge from last year the fights don't end with a winner or loser until the judge decides. No one is gonna land a final blow and tell you your dead as that's just cheating. If the fight has gone well it should be poised on a knife edge and able to go either way by the time the judges step in :D

I just have to clear one thing up. I did win. Hae did not advance, the correct character did. We both in VM and PMs to each other as the contest progressed enjoyed the battle and if Hae advanced, E1 would have supported Hae as she continued. Now as to why I won.

Which character advanced does not have anything to do with my victory. Even if I did not enter a character in this contest, I would have still won. My victory is in the ability to read such talented writers and being able to pick up on some creativity and techniques so I can improve my own talent. With every battle I have the privilege to read, my victory only increases that much more. Personally I feel that from what I have seen in everyone's writing, there are going to be no losers, only characters that advance. In the end there will be one character that is crowned champion, but in the course of the contest, if we can learn something new by seeing other creativity, does anyone really lose? :D

So j'ai un question pour vous: are the judges going to put up anything as to why they decide who wins a bout? Like a critique of the battle or anything? Why they score the battle the way they did....Or is it just going to be 'So-and-so wins: THE END'

The judges will rate the battle using the criteria of the opening post in this thread. Whether or not they post a critique, is up to them. I know that I will be to a certain extent. However, anyone can feel free to PM their judge for more of an explanation.

Jac, I don't just flatter people. Face it, you get a compliment from me, it's a rare thing. You're a damn good writer. We're getting views because you're one half of this awesome battle.

Now, I'm not going to say I don't have any writing ability myself, but I refuse to let you get away without taking your share of the credit for this.
