In a galaxy so vast, life has found its way on many a planet. Some are still in the phases of simple bacteria while others still fight with crude metal weapons and wonder at nighttime about the stars above. A smaller percent have even begun the technologies of space flight and exploration. Yet when one takes into account the hundreds of millions, or even billions of planets able to potentially harbor life, this small percent can still indeed be a formidable number.

And so our focus shifts to these species, those who have taken to the stars! Some only leap to their nearby moons and local planets, limited by the technology of their time. Others still stretch farther, taking new planets under their wing. To say that many interstellar empires have existed and fallen is a gross understatement. To even attempt to fathom the number of such accomplished civilizations would be nigh impossible.

Most have fallen, but still, few remain. Of these, some choose war, pitting their technologies against one another. Some battles are swift and decisive, the victor being clear from the very beginning, and many more are not so. Legends have been told of battles lasting hundreds of thousands of years! Or so they say. And even though no one civilization will know but the tiniest fraction of what has come before them, history does repeat itself time and time again.

Within this very age there are civilizations that have achieved such greatness. Some still war amongst others, or even amongst themselves. Some choose isolation. Some choose to uplift the other races that may be but in their stone ages. Each civilization is vastly different from all those before it, but the larger patterns of the universe always remain the same. There is peace, there is war, politics and compromise, happiness and sadness, life and death. Such there has always been, and always will be...

SETTING
In a section of a galaxy, thousands of species have found each other over the course of tens of millions of years. Some have been uplifted by other species, and many have achieved their own means of technology. For the most part, technology is traded freely amongst all races, however there are naturally some who keep secrets for their own power and advantage over others. Also, each species mostly has their own form of government over their planet or planets. Some planets, though maybe run by members of the same species, may have entirely separate governments.

Races come together for trading of goods, culture, technology and so on. Trade is so important that big business, such as corporations, are essentially the main ruling factor over mostly all of the known areas of the galaxy. In fact, some planets may not have any colonists but perhaps pirates who seek to sell a rare mineral for the highest possible price they can get. As the main form of power is money or valuable goods, many of these corporations sometimes even resort to all out war with other competitors to get what they want. Almost all corporations and the like hire trained soldiers for everything from basic security to private military. As one can imagine, business can get ugly very quickly in this society.

Ordinary citizens have many jobs that one would expect: entertainment, hospitality, repairs, etc. However, many of them naturally commit themselves to one of the major corporations if they're up to the challenge. Being a hired soldier for a company isn't the only way to get killed in competition. Plenty of backstabbing goes on in the bureaucracy of dealing in both interior and exterior areas of one's own corporation. People will literally kill each other to get to the top or to snuff the competitors. Naturally, such sneaky and tricky moves can end up in corporations going into all-out war with one another.

All of that aside, society still can be a pleasant place to live, surprisingly. Many of the worlds offer exotic and beautiful landscapes, and sometimes expensive luxury resorts for those who can afford it. There are well over 100,000 known worlds, though not all are populated for multitudes of reasons. Not all of the galaxy has been uncovered, and it will probably take millions or tens of millions to discover even half of it. But in the unknown people will take risks, especially those looking for fortune and power...

TECHNOLOGY
The most important technology by far is that of space travel. Space ships work by attaching any number of modules onto a very large drive system. Putting a drive system onto every single ship is expensive and in society is considered to be a waste of resources. Only 1/8 of all functional ships in the whole of society are ever actually in space at any given time. Thus, it was considered a smart move to make each craft a partial craft that could be fixed onto a drive only when necessary. The modules are capable of lifting off from and re-entering into the atmosphere, traveling short distances in space, and functioning as a lifeboat/escape pod. Civilian sizes of these modules can vary from a very small single-person pod all the way up to specialty yachts. When a person is ready to travel to another planet, they lift up from the planet and dock at a large Station wherein they are attached to a drive system. Once arriving at their destination, the drive system is left behind at another Station, and the person may descend onto the new planet. It should be noted that militaries are able to maintain a drive system on their ships permanently, as per their need for much traveling. However, all other ships are not, including but not limited to merchant, civilian, yacht, etc.

Another important technology is that of the Station. Stations are large constructs that usually float in the nearby vicinity of a populated planet or area of importance. The most important part of a station is that it houses the massive drive systems, which would be quite troublesome to constantly lift and put down in various atmospheres. Stations are gigantic, and can house tens of millions of people in them. They are often a good place to stop for trading, resting, or recreation if one is not looking to stay in the nearby system for long.

Energy sources are another important technology. Currently, fusion of hydrogen and sometimes helium are the most popular and efficient method of energy production, especially for drive systems. Hydrogen and helium found in abundance on many atmospheres, particularly gas giants. However, technologies such as solar capturing are used on planets and Stations with a nearby star or stars. Also on planets are hydroelectric, wind, and geothermal generators.

Now, we come to weapons. Many weapons have been designed by all the various species currently known in the area of the galaxy. Some examples are melee weapons with energetic effects, electromagnetically propelled rifles, synthesized handheld lightning casters, heat-amplified blades, radiation guns, and so on. There are currently no means of producing direct energy beams, lasers, plasma weapons, blasters, etc. with current power production means. Even such powerful weapons as lightning casters and radiation guns are largely inefficient, only having one or two uses before the power source is spent, in addition to them being overly expensive. The most common weapon is currently the electromagnetic rifle/rail gun/slug thrower.

Lastly is the question of shielding/armor. No, there is no force shield or anything of the sort. The most advanced armor in existence is essentially a force dispersing material which can stop several rounds from a rail gun with the only effect to the wearer being the equivalent of a powerful shove. This material is extremely expensive and can only be afforded by powerful companies or trillionaires. This material cannot be produced in large quantities, and as such it is not able to be placed on any spaceships. The best form of defense in the known galaxy other than that is simply the rule of 'just don't get shot'.

SPECIES
Following is a list of a few known races, though thousands technically exist:

Lakemu-na: a race of amphibious creatures with tentacle appendages and a slim, very tall appearance. They have three eyes and are often covered with markings that can detail everything from their origin to their own life story or more. Lakemu-na are known for their ability to communicate with all species seamlessly because they can form conversational neurological connections with other beings. Their culture is very philosophical, and often they take much time and discussion before deciding anything. Approximately 10-11 feet in height.

Deshriel: a race of extremely large quadrapedal beings. Their already thick skin is covered in many areas with large, plate-like scales. They have one eye, large carnivorous teeth, and a long tail with a dangerous spike appendage at its end. Deshriel are one of the oldest and most advanced of all the races, having helped to developed much of the technology that exists. Approximately 20 feet in height and 37 feet from head to tail.

Klora'i: a race of bipedals who have developed a symbiotic relationship with a lichen-type lifeform that serves them as a natural form of armor. The lichen-growth can be in many colors and shapes, each making a Klora'i very unique in appearance. Their culture is based very much in honor and showing one's strength through challenging others in battle. Approximately 5-5.5 feet in height.

Ffola: a race of aerial creatures who float using a method of gasbags that lie along their back. Ffola only have two forward limbs which have a very strong grip and they also possess a both a tail and a prehensile snout to assist them in gripping, eating, and various other activities. Their culture is geared towards safety, as their evolution is that of prey. Approximately 3 feet from head to tail.

Masir: a race of insectoid bipedals with both an endoskeleton and an exoskeleton, otherwise known as a biskeletal system. Their exoskeleton however, is not hard and rigid as would be expected. Rather it is somewhat flexible and not so segmented. They have exterior mandibles to assist in eating, small eyes with poor eyesight, and hair-like structures that cover their body. Masir are very community oriented and work in groups to get things done. Their preferred system is to place one specific leader as the head of all things and the others work to help the leader, though leaders have been known to get killed by the horde before. Approximately 6.5 feet tall.

(Note: custom races are certainly welcome!)

I'll have some NPC's that I'll manage, so here's the sheets for them.

NAME: Atili Atta
SPECIES: Klora'i
GENDER: female
APPEARANCE: She is slightly more than average height for a Klora'i (5.5 feet), and her lichen armor is a mixture of golden yellow and rust color. Other than this, she looks very much like the typical build of a Klora'i, meaning that her body appears quite muscular. She wears her Overseer uniform most of the time, which consists of dark green robes and red trim and designs.
BIO (short): Being born on the Klora'i homeworld, Raa, Atili attended naval training after basic education, as many of her family did. Wanting to uphold her family's honor and good name, she decided to make a career out of serving as a naval cadet. Atili is now the Overseer of Fleet 7 for the private company IMOC (Interstellar Mining Operations Company). The fleet exists for protecting current establishments of IMOC and also for conquering the territory of competing businesses. Atili has had this career for the past 26 years, spending the past 2 as Overseer of Fleet 7. After this large amount of time with the fleet, she knows much of both the military and also the business that controls their movements. She cares not for the motives of IMOC, but simply carries out her orders and cares more instead about simply keeping those under her command alive.

NAME: Char Wakan
SPECIES: Masir
GENDER: male
APPEARANCE: Char Wakan looks like an average Masir, being tall, lanky, and covered in hair-like structures. The main thing that stands out is that he wears an almost comically large pair of glasses to somewhat compensate for the weakness of his Masir eyes, though he still sees things best only when they are moving. He wears very simple clothing, primarily grey shirts and darker pants.
BIO (short): Char works in the metal forge upon one of the nigh countless Stations, helping to craft sheets of metal that are later used for repair purposes on spaceships. He had a relatively simple, regular childhood, only going through the same things that every youth does. He despises the constant warring for power and valuables that the large businesses partake in, and thus keeps himself apart from anything relating to them.

NAME: Gendif Lanaka, Second born of Duchess Lanorna Lanaka, House Lanaka
SPECIES: Charabidian
GENDER: Male
APPEARANCE: Gendif is tall, strongly built and handsome for a Charabidian. He has fine tailored low profile armour, a monosabre constructed of non-newtonian metals harvested from the 3 sisters pulsars, and a brace of gauss pistols on his belt at all times, and does his best to look the intimidating pirate/reveloutionary. Like all Charabidians, Gendif would be described by a human as a 'cat man', with furred skin, clawed hands, and feline features and a lithe, well muscled build.
BIO (short): Gendif is a male rebel, something of an oddity in Charabidian culture (see below). Born to a respected female of the Lanaka clan and intended from birth as a breeding partner for another clan, Gendif did the unthinkable and rebelled. He built a crew from the dispossed, down trodden, and cast out of Charabidian society, both low born females and abandoned males, and stole the light prowler Darkwatch. He then turned pirate, aiming to build his reputation and highlight the plight of oppressed males across the empire, along with the inadequacies of the Charabidian clan system. While somewhat successful, the Charabidian Clan Navy hounds him from system to system, and in the long watches of the night, he doubts his mission, seeing in his plan some long term plan or double bluff by his own mother, the Duchess Lanaka. . . as such he is desperate for outside help in any form, and will gladly ally with aliens who might be sympathetic to his species plight.

The Charabidian Empire
Nestled deep in a dense area of stellar phenomena, dying stars and nebula lies Charabidia, home star and system of the Charabidian Empire. Warlike and clannish, the Charabidian Empire exploded across known space with the advent of a local space folding drive and quickly overwhelmed several other stellar powers just outside their home cluster. With the galactic community alerted to the threat, dozens of species banded together and beat them back in a bloody war that managed only to confine the Charabidians to their home cluster, the various forces finding it impossible to prosecute a campaign in the dense stellar maze the Charabidians call home. After several years of tense stalemate, the Charabidians approached their erstwhile foes and offered them trading rights and mercantile agreements in an exchange for a ceasefire. Everyone benefited, and the Charabidians became aggressive merchants and colonists, though they retained their large standing army and navy.

Charabidian culture is divided into several dozen competing clans, each lead by powerful females. Females dominate Charabidian society at every level, and breed or clone males as almost expendable assets for their industry, armies and as 'toys' of leisure. The dominant mammalian species of Charabidia have always had an innate ability to direct the genetic selection of their young on a subconscious level, what elevated the Charabidian species to dominance was the ability to do it consciously. This ability has been further augmented by genetic engineering and factory cloning, allowing males to be tailored for their role generations before they are born.

Charabidian technology is efficient, though not notable more advanced than other species. They take great pride in their home grown developments, such as their folding space drive, and gene tailoring tech, and superior sensor and navigation equipment. What most people seek from the Charabidians in trade is their access to quixotic and Non-Newtonian elements from the many stellar anomalies in their space. Charabidans harvest these from the accretion disks of black holes, the charred cinder worlds around the 3 sister Pulsars known as the 'blind fates', and from the stellar nurseries of the Magellan drift. There is also a brisk slave trade for their males, though to keep demand high, any males traded to others will live short lives before succumbing to a tailored virus locked into their cells, which also prevents them being cloned, as any cell samples will quickly succumb to the virus before they can be analysed. This keeps trade brisk, by ensuring constant demand. Occasionally a defeated female who has fallen afoul of politics or an enemy clan will end up on the trade block, and will often fetch a high price from discerning collectors of the exotic.

The Darkwatch

The Darkwatch is a medium, extended range frigate known in Charabidian parlance as a prowler. Equipped with advanced sensor baffles, heat dissipation technology and advanced stealth armour, the ship is practically impossible to detect at medium to long ranges. Its sensor array is similarly advanced, as is its integral drive, though this is not designed to be used very often. Standard procedure is for a prowler to be carried into a system by a mother ship, then to scout it out or observe an enemy force from a distance. If detected, it can easily escape by 'rabbiting' to FTL, outrunning pursuers, then it can be recovered by its mother ship. It is slower than an average frigate, and not as heavily armoured, though it is well armed. Stealth and subtlety are its key strengths. At the moment the Darkwatch is badly under-crewed, and needs technical expertise before several vital systems fail completely. Despite that, its reputation is a fearsome one, and has already humiliated the Charabidian Clan Navy on more than one occasion.

Statistics

Mass: 1070 tonnes.
Length: 30 metres
Width: 12 metres
Height: 23 metres
Armour defence: 5cm 'event horizon' type armour on all surfaces. 40cm standard Ferro-fibrous on all surfaces underneath stealth armour layer.
Reactor: 2 Duchess Class Fusion plants feed by a Scavenger class Stellar material collection system, and a deuterium compressor.
Speed: fusion propulsion provides 2.7g acceleration with compensation, maximum of 3.7g acceleration. Stellar speed is 1.7 kilolights. (2/3rd galactic standard) current Stellar speed is 0.9 kilolights due to corrosion of gravitation modules. The Darkwatch uses a detaching short range quick cycle interstellar drive that is similarly stealth coated and equipped with solar panels so it be deposited in a system and collected later fully recharged without anyone knowing.
Range: 3 parsecs. Currently 1.2 parsecs due to failing bio-support systems
Compliment: 100. Currently 64 due to combat losses.
Armament: 4 longbow missile launchers with 100 round magazine (currently 25 rounds remaining)
8 Magna 'Hellstar' gauss weapons, in retractable mounts. The Hellstar series fires a short ranged beam of extremely hot, fast moving metal that to outside observers could be mistaken as a beam weapon, but is essentially an advanced mass driver weapon. Many outside observers believe the Charabidians have mastered energy weapons thanks to the wide scale introduction of these weapons. (when deployed, detection chance increases by more than 25%. Ammunition at 50%, reactor dependant for heating of shots.)
16 light rapid firing gauss cannons in retractable ball mounts. (again, when deployed detection chance increases by more than 25%. Ammunition reserves down to 40%)
4 venom class mine-layer systems, fed by a magazine of 50 plasma-pulse anti ship mines (5 remaining)

Phew! that turned into something of an epic. Hope it meets approval.

NAME: Ender
SPECIES: Nisus
GENDER: Male

APPEARANCE: 6'1", with skin as black as the infinity of space, without being dotted with stars. His eyes are a luminescent purple significantly darker at the center. Ender has no mouth as far as anyone can see- His speech seems to emanate from his body and how he eats remains a mystery. Perhaps most notable about Ender is his clothing; By default, his clothes are robes reminiscent of the Human's Feudal Japan, often causing people to associate him with the mythology of Ninjas. However, when encountering a strange race or person, they immediately change in texture, shape, and color to match that of present company, at least as far is anatomically possible. Assuming said company does not wear clothing, they will revert back to their original form.

BIO (short): Ender isn't an individual's name, not by tradition. It was once the name of an entire species. After a long, bloody war, however, they soon learned they were soon to become extinct, and placed one hundred of their kind's eggs - fifty male and fifty female - in a state of suspended incubation, in hopes that one day, their kind might once again thrive as they once did.
Just one survived.

Roughly one century later, the eggs were discovered by a traveling group of Klora'i, one of whom, curiously, plucked a single egg out of its incubation chamber. Not a moment later, another of the group, who had been fiddling with the controls to the chamber, accidentally sterilized it, killing the remaining ninety nine eggs and leaving them with the heavy responsibility of bringing up what they had mistakenly made the last living member of a sentient race.

Ender, as a child, had been called Onero, literally meaning "Burden". Something of cruel humor on his foster parent's part, based on the difficulties that came with raising such an unusual creature. As he began to wonder why he was so different, however, he approached his mother, and, upon learning of where he came from and the act that his Uncle had performed that effectively killed off his own kind, flew into an incoherent rage, screaming and demanding to be brought to the planet on which he was found.

The text on the walls and in the books of the planet, completely indecipherable to most anyone else, came naturally to Onero, and after almost three days of exploring his ancestor's home, came to a decision. Onero was not a proper name for him. He was not a burden, he was the end. The finale to a show a century past. Ender would be a far more appropriate name- and what's more, it was even a rough translation of his own species' name. Ender would be their legacy, their final impression on the universe. Their End.

Since that day, Ender has mastered the use the knife for combat purpose, even having one created from one of the few schematics he thought to recover from his native planet. Created by Nisus to be used exclusively by them, it is the only known object in existence besides his very clothing that is capable of accompanying Ender in a teleportation, and though he does own a handful of plans for other pieces of equipment, most of the required materials are extremely rare and expensive, and he is incapable of obtaining them or paying any modern blacksmith to use them.

Much of his behavior is a reflection of the Klora'i people's psyche, and he's developed a strong sense of honor in battle, though Ender is not above using his innate teleportation ability, strange voice projection, and unnerving appearance to deteriorate his adversary's feeling of security, lack of paranoia, and overall sanity.

As far as a species goes, the Nisus, and Ender by extension, were an anomaly. Not only do they not drink water, but in each Nisus is bestowed a natural, inexplicable hate for contact with the substance. They are also capable of teleportation, within one hundred meters of their own position. This is made possible by a form of trade-off: Ender, and his clothing, which is actually an organic, removable part of a Nisus' body, will move from Point A to Point B, and the gases that once took up the space in Point B are at the same time placed in Point A, making room for Ender. The process is instant, but has a cooldown time ranging from two seconds to a full minute, based on how much energy the Nisus has in its body- Literally, Adenine Triphosphate, which is temporarily drained to allow the warp, which, oddly, allows for very little increase on the Y axis, preventing him from moving more than two feet upwards with his ability.

...Wow, I went on for longer than I'd hoped. Oh well. Free cookie to the first person to guess which popular indie creature that Ender is based on. Shouldn't be that hard for anyone that knows it.

Hello dakkagor! I must say, this is a fine application you have submitted. Very in-depth and attentive to detail: I like that!

I only have three points to address. In my technology section I mentioned that there are no means of direct-energy weapons and also gave examples of the common and acceptable technological advancements in weaponry. Unfortunately, I would say that plasma swords and plasma weapons are out of the question for a character. Railguns are pretty darn powerful still though. Even on an armored target they can shear through many times more than even the most advanced of conventional combustion weaponry.

Also in regards to weapons, you mentioned that your ship has pulsed particle cannons. I must ask you to change those as well, as particle weapons would fall under the category of advanced energy weapons. Gauss cannons and specialized missiles/warheads are probably the only weapons one would see on a spaceship.

The last thing that caught my eyes was the mention of a folding space drive. As I also mentioned in my Technology section under space travel, all ships use detachable drive units, which are standard across the board. Some may be slightly faster than others for military or higher commercial purposes, but all drives certainly function on the same technology. It's best to think of this drive as something akin to a warp drive, as it is not instantaneous travel. It takes days, even weeks to travel between systems at best.

Other than those three points, all is in tip-top shape. Once you address those, I shall have you approved! :)

Actually, his appearance, name, teleportation ability, and innate hate of water all have roots in the Endermen of Minecraft.

When you make eye contact, they stare at you and violently shake their head. The moment you look away, they teleport directly behind you and attack. Water kills them.

Ender's shorter than them, and has more human proportions. Also he isn't made of squares and rectangles, and actually wears clothes.

Fair enough, though particle weapons are probably the easiest energy weapon to manufacture, falling as a halfway house between a direct energy weapon and a Railgun/mass driver, and when you mentioned lightning guns, I assumed that's what you meant, as PPCs are meant to look like lightning bolts when they discharge.

On drive systems, so the ship can't have a drive, or it can but its a detaching unit? I guess I'm just stuck on how that would be practical for a military vessel, because if you detached the drive someone else could find it, blow it up, and then leave, and you'd be stranded. At that point it makes sense for the drive to be located inside the vessel, or at-least be permanently attached. While the drive the Darkwatch has currently folds space, it doesn't allow instantaneous travel, and functions like the mass-effect drives from mass effect, allowing fast travel over short distances.

Obviously its your setting and I bow to your judgement, but some more explanation would be awesome on that. I'll change the weapons immediately, please get back to me on the drives!

Dakkagor: sorry about my failing to mention that military vessels (private militaries included) are alloted drives systems of their own. They're still made from the same tech, and their still a freakin huge part of the ship. The reason for detachability is explained in the Tech section because of the expense of building a drive system for each ship. Also, the drive isn't just left floating out in space, it has to be docked at one of the Stations first, ensuring its safety. So you're is fine with its own drive because you're kinda a military person :3

Alright everybody, the IC thread is up! If you have questions, just let me know :) Basically this starter is having several characters (well my two at least) meet up at one of the Stations. They don't know each other yet, but soon they shall!

As I said, our characters can meet up at this Station mentioned in the IC thread :) Unless you would prefer to bring you character in at a different point?

I have posted. It makes more sense for Gendif to side with the other side (maybe in an anti-hero/villian capacity) for now, as its the safer bet.

SPECIES NAME : Aileen
APPEARANCE : light skinned, spirits have a pure white or pitch black mass. Priests of Lunara wear dark blue or black robes with electric blue markings of Lunara covering them. Priests of Solaris wear crimson or black robes with blood red markings of Solaris. The warriors wear the same over their armor, the. The color depends on which temple they where trained from. hair color is can range from pure white to forest green.
WEAPONS : The main weapon is the psi staff, it is a staff that channels the psionic energies of the wielder and converts them into a beam or charges the end of the weapon to disrupt the matter that it touches next.
The secondary weapon is the Lunara chakram(for priests of Lunara only). This disc of glowing blue metal is made to respond to the psionic abilities of the wielder. The other weapon the shield of Solaris, is a crescent piece of star iron with glowing orange markings of Solaris.
NOTES : they will become spirits when they die allowing them a sort of...second life, although in this form the cannot affect the world directly they can still control most of the abilities they had prior to death.
HISTORY : The Aileen used to be a peaceful people (they are like the Shaolin monks peaceful warriors) but after the humans destroyed their home world of zasjar they split into clans, each clan followed a different path. Lights clan followed the path of Lunara, the goddess of water and light. The Zul'kartoum followed the path of Solaris, the god of fire and the sun. The banalore followed the path of Centaurus, the god of nature and order. The karashi followed the path of malignis, the Titan of chaos and discord. The clans have very different goals, lights clan seeks to restore peace in the world, the Zul'kartoum seek to bring the fires of the sun to purge the galaxy of any impurities such as humans, the banalore seek to restore order to the world through any means necessary, and the malignis seek to have revenge on the humans for their lost homeworld. (hope it's not too long I just had a lot to say, so pls accept for both PS I hope I'm not busting in on a part of the rp that's too late for me to join. Sry if I am!

A very unique character! And it's good to see you put time into the backstory of the Aileen people, and also it's nice to see a psionic character. It reminds me of the good ol' days of Traveller :D You are ACCEPTED! And no, you're not too late at all. Just jump on in wherever you like and I look forward to RPing with you

Char, should I just push on with my character meeting the corporations in the system, or do you have something planned?

Char

Dakkagor, you can do that :D I don't plan to control ALL the NPC's, probably just Atili and Char for the time being, maybe one or two more in the future. I'll just keep them occupied until the Station gets attacked :o Unless you want me to RP someone in the fleet that you're planning on meeting up with?

hey, i was wondering if you would mind if i posted a couple more races. Although i probably would make a character out of each one i thought it might be nice to give people joining some more races that have already been set.

Adding more race options sounds good to me, although I would ask that for the current time you only keep your character maximum at 2. We may add some later on, but I think 2 should be perfectly suited for our current RP needs :)
