Slowly you are taught how to eat and walk; how to talk the simple dialect of ‘Purgatory’. Technology is basic – Cart and horse, ox and plough, food grown from your own hard work. You see spaceships in the sky but you cannot recall what they are. The days are peaceful. There is no conflict in ‘Purgatory’. The days drag by and you wonder of your existence, of your purpose, but never do you question your reason for being there.

A small part of your mind, a flickering remnant of your former self reminds you – This is where you should be. This is where you deserve to be.

Whether you came through self loathing, through fear, through despair – You are aware that life here is better than anything you were faced with out there.

Extra Information:

Each Village in ‘Purgatory’ is isolated; each providing a home for a different species (although the term species means little to you at the moment). Your Village houses those of Human-Descent. The longer you have spent there, the more capable you are to begin with. The longer you have spent in the ‘real world’, the more capable you will be once your memories begin to return. The longer you've spent in Purgatory, the longer your memory will take to fully return.

Your reason for being there can be anything – Anything that would make a person want to give up everything and start afresh, without identity or memory.

In case you haven’t guessed, all characters you make will be human.

Your Development in Purgatory:


0 months – Unaware of anything. Coma-like state. Looked after by the Purgatory’s nursing staff

1-2 months – Involuntary twitching of extremities. REM sleep-like state.

3 months – Opening eyes. Regaining basic control of limbs and bodily functions.

4 months – Able to sit up unsupported. Able to stand whilst supported. Little balance.

5 months – Able to stand and drink unaided. Difficulty swallowing. Progress after this begins to quicken.

6 months – Able to walk for short distances. Able to eat and drink. Starts to show emotion and form attachments to the staff.

7 months – Is placed in a house with an existing resident to care for them. Balance is greatly improved. Starts to make sounds.

8 months – Education begins.

11 months – Able to form basic sentences. Able to perform basic hand movements independently. Begins to train in a certain trade.

15 months – Able to form complex sentences and is in complete control of body. Starts an apprenticeship with a master of their chosen trade. Gait is still awkward but does not fall when running.

20 months – Cognitive ability matches that of the other adults in Purgatory. Movements are smooth and controlled.

25 months – Allowed to work on their own and obtain their own property.

Lifestyle on ‘Purgatory’:

Dylan has been living in Purgatory for just under five years. She lives contentedly with her house-sister near the edge of the village, in the same house she was allocated, what seems like decades ago. They both have yet to choose a partner to move out with and neither of them find themselves in a rush to.

Life in Purgatory moves at an easy pace. Some would consider it idyllic.

She apprenticed in language the first chance she could and spends her days teaching the newcomers how to speak.

In her dreams, she can hear the children screaming. By morning, she forgets.

But with such a steady cycle of work he rarely has time to think on her it's only when he does that he develops an incessant urge to wash his hands over and over again.

Ellie lives alone in the middle of town. She had a roommate at one point. Ellie however managed to drive him off. It wasn't very spectacular simply that Ellie came down with a fever and he was afraid it would catch so he left. Ellie is one of the newest "medics". Technically she is more of a midwife because she isn't allowed near the newer ones just yet. She assists in fevers and birthings of the normal residents. Ellie is content though, life is pretty idyllic on this place called Purgatory.

Lifestyle on ‘Purgatory’: Caz lives alone in a house in the middle of the village where she spends her days writing, as she is a writer. From where she lives, she's able to look outside the window and see a lot of people walking by, from who she draws inspiration. Because her being a writer is mostly a hobby that's grown into a passion, she fills her days and provides her life with being a baker and providing the village with bread and stuff. Furthermore, she's kind of to herself but likes a good drink every now and then, which brings her to a café every other night. She does share her house with her cat though.

They're cautious that hunting etc might cause ex-murderers and the like to start regaining memories. The most you'll find is a knife in the kitchen.

Lives in a small cabin behind the stables, with just herself and her thoughts. No lover to speak of.

Lifestyle on ‘Purgatory’:

Jack's official job is essentially a designer, drawing plans for different structures within purgatory, though his true true passion lies with the arts. Having taken a liking to writing and art, his small home is cluttered and populated with drawings, sketches, and paintings, most half-finished or merely abandoned.

Is fairly popular due to his status as an "intellectual" in purgatory, though most think he's insane with his reclusive and devious attitude. Most of his art is seen as a sign of evil due to its dark nature, branding him as a threat to some. Parents have told stories to their children about staying away from his house, and among the kids themselves are silly stories of Jack kidnapping children and boiling them into the small wood and stone figures of people that litter his household.

Despite this, his art has appealed to some, giving him a bit of a following.

Lifestyle on ‘Purgatory’: [Nurse Records] Client 019835480 is being closely monitored for independent movement. Frequent twitching of the head occurs but limbs remain still. Worry that Intravenous therapy is not efficient, considering the species anatomy, and that more specialized treatments should be given, despite management’s reluctance. Unable to tell if Client is truly conscious as normal tests cannot be applied. As with all Vakern, we will wait until there is movement of the tongue before we consider him fully responsive and awake.
