Late at night when all the world is sleeping, the teenagers of Sombertown debate between sneaking out to the latest party and club scene at Club Zealous, or behaving by going to actual bed.

Rarely, does any teen do that. Sombertown is dull and dreary enough with nothing every happening, why would they want to go to sleep when there's so much mischief to create? Is it only in their dreams that anything worth talking about happens?

Seems to be the case: those who do actually go to bed have the most extraordinary stories to talk about at school the next day. They go on and on about how they find themselves walking down streets at night in their dreams, down alley ways, or dancing all night with the crush of their dreams - Only to witness a terrible, terrible act of assault, or in worst cases, death! They get so caught up in their dream date (literally) that when they turn around, they don't notice that their date has fled the scene! When they chase after it, one of two things happen:

-Their date is fatally wounded by strangers covered in dark shadows and clothes that seem to wrap every inch of them, including gloves to seal off any gesture of skin color! The student watches in the dream as their date is torn apart and eaten - or so it seems?

-Or, option two: the date attacks them - And they wake up before it's over!

Obviously, this makes for great gossip at the lunch tables. The goths and freaks all call it prophetic, as if they know what's going on and all the preps and jocks better watch themselves closely. Nerds and geeks defy the likelihood of any dreams meaning anything at all - All paranormal psycho babble. But they give in so that the pretty girls will either think more of them, or to scare them. Some teachers are even getting that edgy feeling from all of this.

How did Sombertown get so eventful? It wasn't always like this. This only started in this town about seven months ago. But three months into it, and the reason for the chills up teacher's necks is that: it isn't only a dream anymore. People are going missing. Some returning, but not to school or work, only to be spotted at night time down those famous alleyways or clubs.

Who can anyone trust when those you knew are lost, and those who were missing are found in times of great fear?

The Book of Vampires by Mabel White in the Victoria University Library wrote:

Vampires are a myth. They were a story created long ago in ancient times when people began to go missing, or perhaps turned up dead, with slits in the neck or a drainage of blood. Rather than logically assume the blood drained from the wounds, the people began to create a monster from the depths.

This all started from a place called Layditin, a small village in what used to be Eurasia. (*1) The idea of such a monster gave people so many ideas of how to get away with murder; once it started in once town, it was a copycat effect taken to many different villages and sometimes cities, as they'd be able to stay longer before being found out. Many blamed the plagues, many blamed the fevers, and once the same print of two slices in the neck were detected, people blamed Vampires, their monster created into life.

Once the 'vampies' became a global threat, people became more and more paranoid. Less people wandered the streets at night, afraid for their own lives as they couldn't see in the dark. - (*2) This created the myth that vampires cannot walk in daylight, as being as cruel as they are to murder people, they must be from the depths of Hell! This lead the people to attend church and insist something be done about these demonic beings!

This is where the churches froze up and indeed had never seen something like this before. They began to think among themselves, responding with theories turned legend like:(*3) Holy things will protect you! A cross will save your sins and save you from theirs! A steak through their heart will release their tortured souls! Holy water will melt them! And that foul smell of garlic that no one can stand is an allergy to their senses!

But then questions of how to find them came about, as everyone who had taken these measures found no remedy to the attacks and sightings of dead bodies turning up all around town. (*4)That is when the church suggested that they looked just like humans, hiding themselves in crowds. And in the day time, where their skin is so pale that they cannot come out, they turn into animals or beings that hide their true nature! Rats! Snakes! Bats! Things that go thud in the night! Keep the heart of a believer and they cannot enter your house without an invitation! So don't invite or talk to strangers!

As the murders became more and more scarce due to people not venturing outside, always speculating, and going to church more often, no one seemed interested anymore. Vampires finally died out. Science has gone back and proven many of the irregularities and symptoms of death to be that of natural cause, or by the murder of weapon or hand. Not 'teeth'.

(*5)Vampires do not exist.

- Believers tell this story a bit different:

*1 Vampires have been around for much longer than that, but in their hunger, they harvested on people, leaving some dying in the streets, and others in dark alley ways without a guide to teach them the way of Vampirism, leaving them to find out on their own and not hide their tracks, making it much easier for vampires to be discovered.

*2 Vampires can walk out in the daylight, so long as they are clothed. The sun burns any human's skin if they are out long enough. Vampires just burn at a faster rate, having merely minutes, sometimes seconds to spare before their bodies burn into a crisp of ash.

*3 Crosses and steaks, really, are all that work against Vampires. The holy water made them laugh at the attempts, and the garlic smells awful to just about anyone, not just vampires.

*4 Vampires look just like humans, and no, they do not run about like wild animals in different forms during the day. Vampires can also walk in to anyone's house they please, so long as there is not a cross on the doorway, a fashion statement which has died out since.

*5 They are very real Beliefs in them are still very common, and very modern, still.
