A foul wind rose from the south, the smell of death and decay eminent on that breeze. Even this far away, Disgeran's presence loomed just in sight, bringing with its sight a smell most acrid. On the slopes of the Meron Pinnacle, two warriors stood opposing one another. It was an unofficial duel, none of the generals or rulers knew of it. For some reason these two were brought together to fight.

For Kaizan, it was quite odd. He didn't recall ever meeting this man before, yet something about him struck him as... familiar. It was very odd indeed, but the winged man shrugged it off as one of his feelings that were rarely right and focused on the matter at hand.

At the base of the observatory they stood, only about fifty yards from its walls. Off in the distance, past the observatory, one could see the tainted lands of Disgeran. To the north, the woods of Paladin Grove grew, and west was the sacred land of Nin Yhao. East and south, Disgeran held claim, though west was also the Lion Woods. Truly they were in a no-mans land, though Kaizan believed his opponent was more out of place than he was.

The air tensed for a moment, Kaizan drawing Carrion, his rapier. Watching his opponent closely, he readied himself.

"Let's begin, shall we?" the winged man asked, eyes never straying from the man.

Dezeroth nodded, eyes closed, before stabbing his cane into the ground. Opening his eyes, he raised a hand, murmuring a few words. From deep below, further than could be thought possible by many a man, waters rumbled, the tremors unfelt by the two duelists. The water edged up, through the cracks in the stone, slowly working its' way to the surface. Smirking, Dezeroth continued the spell mentally before gesturing to the sky. A slow circling motion, and verbally he spoke out again. This time, a whirlwind grew. It seemed to have little effect on the sky, however, other than attaching itself to a nearby cloud...That was, until the cloud shrunk suddenly, and was absorbed into the whirlwind, which now contracted around his arm.
Lowering the arm in order to face that of his opponent, he gestured toward Kaizen. The water was flunk at the man. However, before it could ever reach him, Dezeroth was moving his free hand in a wide variety of gestures, the likes of which usually made a man think that he was under the influence of some form of beverage. Quickly, however, the water froze, into hundreds of razor-sharp knives.

Kaizan raised an eyebrow at the man at first, curious as to why he was making those odd gestures. Then he realized the man must be a mage of some sort and put himself on guard, slowly moving forward as the man continued his flamboyant hand motions. It was truly entertaining to watch, as he seemed quite serious while doing them, making Kaizan smirk in silent mirth.

However, things began to change quickly. The man flung water at him, harmless droplets at first, but then the man began to make more hand gestures that told Kaizan that the man wasn't yet done. This proved right when the droplets turned into ice shards, soaring at Kaizan. However, the winged man had already made up his mind about dodging the droplets based on paranoia from the man's motions.

Leaping to the sky, Kaizan took wing and glided over the storm of ice, eyes locked on the man. Landing a few feet in front of the man, Kaizan quickly began a series of slices and stabs with his rapier. Jab. Horizontal swipe. Bottom to top diagonal cut. Bottom to top again, only other direction. Jab. Feint a swipe, then jab again.

Dezeroths mouth quirked at the idea that someone would willingly engage in combat with an unarmed man who doesn't seem even remotely afraid of him. It amused him further that the man saw the gestures and did not understand them. And the fact that he was amused by it made it actually laughable. And so Dezeroth did, indeed, chuckle slightly.

That didn't last, of course. As soon as he jumped over the torrent of ice, he had to change his tactics, and quickly. Although he tried to get in a gesture, he just wasn't fast enough. The man was before him, and the rapier was singing its' way toward his midsection. Grabbing the cane, he jerked upward, revealing the sword hidden within. There was a clang of metal-on-metal, but the Mage had no time to think on it. With a jump backward, he evaded the swipe before parrying a similar stroke. He did not, however, expect a feint, though in part he was wondering if he would change up his strategy any time soon...So it was only barely that he managed to sidestep the attack. As it was, it pierced cleanly through his robes. Ripping them a little, Dezeroths' eyebrows furrowed in concentration.

Keeping up the mental spell, he began a second and third, using both his free hand and his voice. While one hand waved symbols in the air, there was a rumbling in the sky. Energy crackled in his fist. Even as he did so, his voice sang out a spell of protection, woven strands of light appearing around his hand as he stabbed forward at the man, touching the electrified hand to that of the blade. Lightning crackled its' way down the sword, seeking to jump into a new host, as its access into the rest of the mages body was blocked by the sung spell.

So this man was a swordsman as well... Kaizan thought to himself, his face emotionless as he concentrated on his swordsmanship. He wasn't one of the best, but his skill was no laughing matter, though the winged man felt that the mage had gotten lucky with that dodge. Now it was his turn, and more gestures were made as the man chanted his spells.

Kaizan felt the hair on his arms stand on end as one of the spells manifested, lightning crackling lightly. Quickly, Kaizan spread his wings and filled them with wind via a few currents of air, but the other man already was attacking before Kaizan flapped to launch himself backwards.

Though the blade itself missed, the lightning surged into Kaizan's arm, pain erupting in it. Carrion fell from his numb fingers, but he quickly swiped his free hand down to catch the blade, now moving backwards with his wing-beat propelling him so. He landed a few yards away from the man, his right arm hanging limp, pained. After a moment, though, he began to regain feeling, the jumbled nerves finally righting themselves again. Cursing lightly to himself, Kaizan swore he wouldn't let himself get careless again.

As a mage, this man could be up to almost anything. He'd keep Kaizan on his toes, and he liked that. However, Kaizan could also dance. Switching Carrion back to his dominant hand, the winged man whipped up a small tornado, surrounding him until he launched it forward to spin around the man. While that was happening, Kaizan used a burst of wind to launch him to his right, flanking the man. With another burst of wind, he closed the distance, seeking to stab the man through the back of the neck.

Dezeroth smirked as the realization of who he was fighting entered into his face. Before, he was not nearly cautious enough, but maybe now he would understand that in order to fight a mage, certainly one of his own caliber, he'd need to keep on his toes...

Of course, when a tornado erupted from the man, primarily his wings, he briefly considered that perhaps he, too, should keep on his guard, before getting swept up. As he swirled around in the tornado, he managed a quick, three-word spell. A platform appeared below him, sucking his feet to it. Good...Now he'd have a spot to maneuver, at the very least...Now...Where is he-There was little warning except for two high-pitched bursts of air, and the slight rustle of wings. Both of which could barely be heard above the din of noise, and neither was anywhere near enough for him to get a position on. As it so happened, it was his own looking around that saved his life. Instead of getting his neck impaled, there was a narrow cut along his back...It hurt like hell, but it was survivable. Instinctively, the sword in his grip leapt up to meet the man, flashing its' way upward along the mans' center.

Quickly, the Mage realized that fighting in the mans' own territory would not win him anything. So, rather than allow him the use of the wind to his advantage, he pointed toward the Tornado with his free hand, murmuring again. Fire exploded out his finger, and eventually was swept around, a mad cyclone of flames. Dezeroth smirked. The advantage was his, now, as the platform was of his own making. Mentally extending it in the direction of the man, and toward the wall of fire, he waited for the platform to suck Kaizen to it as Dezeroth himself had been. Then, the Mage advanced. There was no way that he could beat this man blade-to-blade, but perhaps...

He lashed out with a quick succession of jabs and slashes. Straight, lung. Straight, stomach. Upper-Left to lower-right. Lower-right to lower-left. Straight leg. All the while, he advanced, intending to push his target to the wall of flames.

Allowing his own tornado to whisk him away from the man, Kaizan disengaged with only a scratch along his arm, nothing major. The man was clever to use his magic to create a platform, quite clever indeed. However, here in the sky, Kaizan was the master, and this man his plaything. Wind was his element, and there would be no other there.

Exiting the tornado to drift lazily on the outside, Kaizan turned to catch sight of the man and saw the mage conjuring fire, mixing it with his own tornado. Clever... If it did anything. Kaizan was here, and he controlled the tornado, so even if it was on fire, it wouldn't-

Suddenly, something was pulling Kaizan towards the tornado. It wasn't the wind, nor the suction of the tornado itself, but something else... Initially, Kaizan beat his wings in an effort to escape the pull, but the energy he was putting out was not nearly enough to escape the pull and be worth anything. So, resigned to his fate, Kaizan prepared himself

Folding his ebon wings around himself in a sort of cocoon, Kaizan allowed himself to be pulled into the tornado and onto the platform that awaited him. The fire brushed past his wings as if they were of metal, the resistance of his wings acting a shield to the rest of his body. He landed on his feet and stumbled slightly, flaring his wings to their normal place so that he wouldn't be blind to his opponent.

The mage was advancing with his sword, a jab followed by a procession of similar moves. Kaizan deftly deflected the attacks, only on the last realizing that he was being pushed back. Towards the fire. Kaizan growled lowly and, with a flick of his blade, aimed to deflect the man's sword wide of his body, then put power into his horizontal strike at the man's mid-section, also serving another purpose. That purpose was to dispel the tornado, removing the fire's medium of existence and leaving the two alone on a platform in the clear sky.

With that done, Kaizan beat his wings and leaped back, disengaging from the mage once again.

The Mages' sword clanged against Kaizans' own before swinging wildly to the left...Which made him incapable of blocking the mans' next stroke. Dezeroth had prepared for this, however, and so leapt back, Aggravatingly enough, it seemed like he'd failed in his plan. Oh, well. I suppose I'll just have to come up with something new. What aggravated him further, of course, was that the man had dispelled his Tornado, effectively ending the advantage that Dezeroth had had for a small amount of time. There was nothing that could be done about that, however.

Dezeroth smiled as the winged man disengaged, but nearly doubled over from pain--That scratch. He could feel familiar effects working on him...unnatural effects working on him. Quickly, he conjured his magic. This would not require any gestures or words, as all the manipulation was within his body. Quickly, he started the magic from the very tips of his toes, the bare ends of his fingers, and worked his way through to the point of contact. As the magic swept through, it carried with it substances of a magical nature. Finally, it reached the wound, and there was a burst of purple energy as he tossed aside the now-slowly corrupting energy from his own body. Grimacing, he readied his weapon before finally allowing the platform to descend to the ground. Why isn't the water rising, yet?

Almost on cue, water began leaking from the ground, quickly covering the battlefield in a thin layer of water. Oh, now we're talking. With a grin, Dezeroth waved a hand, calling the water up before him into a column. Muttering a few words, he pointed to segments of the water. At those points, it suddenly would freeze over, and razor-sharp segments would grow out of the ice. There were five total of these points, and the Mage directed this giant, razor-sharp whip of ice and water at his foe. You control the air...But I control the ground. And you're going to have to come down some time.

Kaizan watched as the man apparently battled the corruption Carrion left behind in its wake. He smirked, wishing he could go in, but even before he could figure an approach, the man straightened and flung aside a ball of what Kaizan assumed was the corruption his rapier had done. Interesting...

The platform lowered, and Kaizan hopped back a little more, realizing that he landed in a puddle of water. Huh, that's strange, I don't remember... his thought didn't finish as he noticed the large hill slowly flood, water apparently rising from the ground. The mage then manipulated the water into a column, freezing sections of it into deadly spikes, then used it to attack him.

Kaizan figured this was an easy dodge. Predetermining the water 'whip's' trajectory, Kaizan launched himself into the air and, flattening his body and pulling his wings in close, pushed himself through the liquid part of the tentacle that attacked him. He miscalculated his size a little, though, bruising his wings on the ice. He exited the tentacle soaking, but unharmed for the most part. He smirked as he closed on his opponent again.

He landed in front of his opponent, but instead of a simple touchdown, a rush of wind followed Kaizan's landing, washing over the man like a tidal wave. Kaizan judged it to be just enough to push the man back, not quite topple him over. In any case, Kaizan rushed him now, swinging his rapier in a vertical line, bottom to top.

Dezeroths' eyebrows rose as the man simply went through the tentacle. A risky move, even if he was skilled enough to do it, considering he could have just as easily dodged it...Raising his sword to deal with the man, he prepared to parry his strike before getting knocked back suddenly. Even with such a disadvantage, blocking an upward strike was not all that difficult, though he was only capable of getting his sword up to bear before after it had left a light scratch on his stomach. However, the man did not realize just how much of a mistake he'd made.

The movements made in the air were concise, clear, and made with what seemed like an almost victorious air to them. Likewise, Dezeroth seemed excited as he intoned another of his spells. The movements were followed by rumbling as the ice, which had pushed against the ice ever so slowly, suddenly melted. The ground heaved inward before the spoken words launched out a spire of earthen material below his foe, water gushing outward. More gestures followed, and the water directed itself toward the swordsman.

Kaizan lost balance when the ground gave way, but he could easily correct that. What he couldn't correct was the sudden rush of water that projected him upwards and away, the flood following him as if directed to. Obviously it was, though, as he continued to be pressed away even as Kaizan flared his wings attempting to get away.

That failed, he resorted to his failsafe. Wind rushed towards him, currents of air surrounding him in a sphere of wind, which halted the water by forcing it to direct around the sphere. With that no longer pushing him, Kaizan slowly gathered himself, then prepared his counter.

Forgoing a simple rush, Kaizan decided to use the water to his advantage. Pressing forward into the rush of water, the winged man cut through it like butter, the sphere acting like a sword that sliced its way through the liquid tentacle. He continued to to this until he reached the man, though instead of releasing the energy beforehand, Kaizan simply used the sphere as a ram to hit the man like a sack of bricks.

Eddren

Dezeroth smirked as it hit him. He'd win, and then he could purify this new--Oh, well, maybe not. Blinking as the man cut through the attack, he quickly, and very simply, dropped his hand and stopped chanting. The water deanimated itself, and now the problem lay in correcting the mistake made. Using the short time given to him, he was only capable of a weaker cantrip, throwing the water up against his foe to attempt to weaken the blow...Which it did, of course. Instead of a sack of bricks, it was more like a hammer. A very survivable hammer. Backing up for a total of two seconds, he held his head, muttering to himself before pointing to the man, and muttering something very different. Water rose around him, and with a cutting motion, froze.

Once again rallying his magic internally, he drew the magic throughout his limbs, capturing the very magic consuming his flesh at the moment, drawing it through his wound, and this time, gathering it. Firing it in the direction where he had just frozen the man, he hoped that his foes' rapier was as effective against himself as it was against Dezeroth. In the unfortunate event that it wasn't....Dez held his head, still ringing from the effects of that last attack. I won't be able to cast another spell for a small amount of time in this condition. His eyes narrowed. A ringing head did not a healthy mage make.

There apparently wasn't mush Kaizan could have done to dodge the water forming around him. It solidified and he found himself trapped in a sphere of ice with no apparent escape route in sight. Resigned to whatever attack was about to be thrown at him, Kaizan slowly sheathed carrion and proceeded to wrapped himself in a protective cocoon that was his wings, which would ultimately protect him from whatever magical attack would come.

This proved to be a saving grace, as he felt the rush of a spell hit his wings, dispelling on the magical feathers of his appendages. He felt a sickening feeling though, which told him that spell was very corrupt. That wasn't like the previous spells the wizard had done, which made him wonder if he had launched Carrion's corruption magic back at him. Hmmm....

The magic had busted through the ice, though, which allowed Kaizan to rush through the opening towards the mage. With Carrion sheathed, Kaizan now switched to his other weapon, the oddly-curved sword Purifier. Though the blade was still neutral as to which race it would be made to destroy, Kaizan felt it was only a matter of time until he had to choose... Until that time, though, Purifier was just an ordinary sword.

An ordinary sword, however, that Kaizan was nearly an expert at wielding.

Twirling the blade in his hand as he unsheathed it and approached the mage, Kaizan whirled on the balls of his feet, spinning clockwise and bringing the blade around from his left side in a horizontal slice, then spinning the blade and bringing it back up in a reverse-grip lower-right to upper-left swing. He then finished the maneuver with a quick kick to the mage's face, then retreated with a heavy beat of his wings, bringing him back about ten feet.

Dezeroth readied his sword, preparing for a charge as the man closed his wings. By now, the Mage figured that fighting him slowly wouldn't work very well, and so was planning on preparing on multiple attacks before he could react. However, those wings had proven to be quite protective against that fire in the cyclone, and undoubtedly would prove to be just as protective against his sword-based spells...And the man was quite the swordsman. He'd never be capable of simply passing through his guard, so he awaited some sign that he was going to open his wings.

Of course, what Dezeroth did not expect was for him to immediately come flying at him before opening his wings. And the original sword was sheathed, but...There was a new one. And the man was going far, far faster than before. I can improve a little upon my previous defense, but not that much. The thought was cool, collected, calculating. He'd have to take a shot or two...Or three. Possibly even four. But he could do something in the meanwhile. Placing one foot behind the other in a manner not too unlike a man on a scooter(Although, of course, scooters were not yet invented), with the sword out in front. This was so that he could work his magic...Which would, of course, hopefully save him.

As the man charged, he made small circles with his hand, water sheathing the sword ever so slightly. He brought it up to deflect the first blow, but the second blow was only weakened. Another scratch on his torso. Great. The kick was only mitigated by his hand, which was rammed up against his head, forcing him backward. To be honest, that whirling move was probably my saving grace. However, as the winged man flew up, Dezeroth shouted out a command before throwing his sword at him. The blade, propelled by the magic infused with the water, shot like an arrow for the man.

At a height of ten feet, the water covering the blade exploded outward, and with a clap, the water froze into many blades of ice. With another snap, the water shattered, reforming back into water before going further up into the sky. A few murmured words, and Dezeroth left the spell to work. Walking over to the sword which was now very much on the ground, he raised it, slashing it downward. The residual water left on it froze into spikes, and the Mage rose the sword, challenging his aerial opponent once again.

Jacogos
08-24-2012, 09:11 PM
Kaizan saw the blade soar towards him, and he had already prepared himself to deflect it when the water coating the sword burst out into icicles, soaring at him. The sword plummeted to the ground, and as Kaizan began to change up his dodge, the icicles instead turned back into water and rose to the sky.

Well.... What the hell? Kaizan though, peering down at the man. He was retrieving his sword, and upon doing so, flourished the blade to cause the steel to produce ice spikes like before, though actually attached to the sword. Kaizan wondered at this for a moment, then shook his head. He had no idea what the man was up to, but he was tired of this farce.

Focusing, Kaizan rose higher into the air, nearly a hundred feet above the ground. Closing his eyes, the winged man held his sword in front of him, channeling his ability to control the wind currents. The air around him began to swirl, expanding as it did so, encompassing about a six foot area around him. For a moment, all there could be seen was a ball of wind surrounding Kaizan like before, but instead of charging, Kaizan's arm outstretched in a blur of motion, holding his blade horizontal suddenly. The sheer suddenness of the move was outstanding, but what was more was the action that came about from it.

As the blade moved at only just subsonic speeds, a blade of wind shot forth from Kaizan, moving at blinding speeds towards the mage. It was only as long as Purifier, which was about two feet or so, but it would hit steel like a full sword slice, while direct contact with a human would cut about a half-inch into the skin barring no armor. Kaizan swung four more times with this technique, in the order of diagonal cut, another horizontal cut, a vertical slice, and then a final horizontal cut. The ball of wind did not disperse though, as Kaizan was not yet done with it.

Dezeroth readied his sword for the upcoming attack, as it seemed obvious that the man had something planned. After all, he never used wind lightly, and here he was, exploiting it to its' fullest. With a slash, there was a pop and a cut down Dezeroths' left arm. His casting arm. Damn! Another slash. This time, as he slashed downward, Dezeroth rose the sword to meet the attack. The magically enhanced ice, of course, was capable of blocking it--But there went all the pointy ends. The mage was thrown back an inch, barely able to stop himself before the next hit struck his blade. Two steps back. That's what saved him from having his head sliced off by the last; instead, a cut, all the way to his ribs, across his chest.

I cannot prepare any more. I have to use it. Weakly, Dezeroth dropped the sword and to his knees, touching a hand to the ground as he gave his spells one last command. Immediately, a torrent of water fell from the sky, while a wave rose from the ground. Thunder cracked, and lightning sizzled through the pillar of water, before it collapsed, condensing upon the mans' orb of wind. It froze, then, crashing to the ground. Dezeroth could not complete the sealing spell, however, as he was now unconscious, on the ground, the deep wounds causing enough trauma to disable the mage, unaccustomed to deep wounds from battle.

In retrospect, Kaizan believed it was keeping the sphere of wind around him that saved his ass that moment. There was truly no way he could have predicted that tirade of water swamping him, battering at his orb of protection until he would have collapsed. What saved him truly, though, was that, just as his sphere failed him and he had to let go of the currents or risk blacking out, the water froze, leaving him in a small dome of ice.

However, it was not all good, as the ice fell and, upon contact with the ground, shattered with him pressed against the top. The ice pelted him as it shattered, cutting him to shreds, but somehow he escaped with all his vitals intact. Bleeding profusely, Kaizan winced as he drug himself to his feet and readied himself for another attack.

Sadly, though, it appeared as though the fight was over, as his opponent had collapsed, most likely under either magical strain or blood loss. Kaizan limped over to the man's body, cautious of the ice shards that now littered the ground. Standing over the man, the Aeregosian took in a slow breath to steady himself.

"Go in peace..." Kaizan breathed, plunging Purifier towards the man's neck to sever his head.

Jacogos

A strangled gasp disturbed the otherwise silent Aeregosian night as Kaizan jolted awake in his bed, sweat drenching his body and, as a result, his sheets. Flicking a few of his own ebon feathers off of the ironically feather mattress, Kaizan placed his hand on his head and his elbow on his leg, trying to mentally shake the oddness he felt from the dream he had just experienced.

Why was that so vivid...? he thought to himself, stretching his wings to test if he still felt that jarring hit from the ice like he thought he did. Of course not, Kaizan, it was just a dream...

Shaking his head, the winged man turned his head towards his swords, which hung on a rack by his door. Untouched, though he could still feel the weight of Carrion when the man's sword hit his.

Maybe it's that cup... The thing was magical, right? Maybe it affects my dreams, too... he thought carefully, trying to think up any excuse for the sheer reality that that dream had created. Laying back in his bed, Kaizan peered up at the roof of his room, mind racing. Who was that man? Why did Kaizan fight him? Was it truly a dream...? Shaking his head, Kaizan dismissed all the stray thoughts and slowly drifted back to sleep.

Dezeroth awoke calmly, albeit frowning. He touched each of the marks where he'd been harmed just a few minutes ago--And there was nothing but skin. And magic. Another touch to his neck...And more magic. A magical dream-battle? Was I facing another mage? He got out of bed, pacing his small room, a hand to his chin. Interesting. Perhaps this is one whose services I will require in the future?
