Welcome to my first RP in the fantasy thread! Inspired by the 1988 movie Waxwork, the 1992 computer game Waxworks, and (believe it or not) the original 1996 Jumpstart 4th Grade game, Haunted Island. Currently rated PG-13 for witchcraft/black magic, violence, and some inappropriate language.

Back Then

Eight years ago they were just young kids, enjoying life as kids do. For all the homework, budding hormones, and overall pressures in elementary school, life seemed to eventually work out its own problems, and everyone at Kendrick Elementary found a sense of peace in their own right. So when a substitute teacher was sent to replace the fifth-grade science teacher on sick leave, no one truly suspected a thing. But then more faculty started to call in sick, prompting more substitutes to arrive, and soon disappearances and even outright deaths among the original faculty began to occur. Finally, with the still-unsolved murder of the school principal and establishment of a new principal, the last traces of the original faculty at the school were gone, and Kendrick Elementary fell wholly to the substitutes.

Even then the nightmare refused to end, as before long the students' personalities began to change. From the shy and unassuming to the cheerful and popular, one by one the children would abruptly change into subdued, almost mindless, versions of themselves, in addition to developing an unusual fear of heat of any kind. Despite the sudden changes, no one could investigate without solid proof, and so this continued until only five students remained unaffected. These five would eventually be surprised to find an urgent letter from resident magician Madame Mystère, along with tickets and backstage passes to her show. When the time came that the five could accept her invitation, she did not hesitate to reveal to them the full story.

The substitutes, as she would explain, were members of a once-benevolent order of wizards, as was Madame Mystère herself, until the order was taken over by a new leader: the new principal. Under his leadership, the order degenerated into a maddened cult bent on using the dark arts to overrun and conquer the Earthly plane. Madame Mystère was the only one to leave the order following this and survive, but by then it was too late to stop their ambitions.

The abrupt personality changes in the students were the result of the cult's latest plan. Using their guise and authority as the new faculty, the substitutes were able to systematically kidnap the unsuspecting children and take them to the local wax museum for use as living "energy farms" to revive the cult's dark masters from the shadowy depths, but the cult was also forced to replace the real children with magically-infused wax clones to avert suspicion. If the cult's plan was successful the children would be killed during the energy harvest, and the masters would once again be free to overwhelm the Earthly plane.

Determined to stop the twisted plans of the cult, Madame Mystère had since realized that she alone was not powerful enough to stop them, so instead she took the five as her personal apprentices, to protect and prepare them for the battle ahead. Eager to learn the ways of magic and recognizing the need of it for their own survival, the five apprentices learned all they could from her until they were discovered by the cult and hunted down. Nonetheless, through a combination of magic, ingenuity, and sheer luck, the five managed to sneak into the wax museum after hours and free their classmates, while Madame Mystère publicly melted one of the wax decoys during a performance and thus exposed the fraud of the cult, who were ultimately driven out of Kendrick Elementary and forced into hiding.

Afterward Madame Mystère had to erase the memories of the entire nightmare from the innocents involved, with the sole exception of her five apprentices, to allow life to revert to a relative degree of peace once more. Over the following eight years the apprentices would continue to cultivate their magical skills under her tutelage in secret, but still were able to continue with their normal lives.

Now

Eight years later, the former activities of the evil cult have since faded from the town, and Kendrick Elementary is once again back to normal with a perfectly normal faculty. The children from eight years past are now all grown up, with some due to go to college while others work through high school. Madame Mystère continued to find steady popularity as an entertainer, and the five apprentices have learned to balance their normal and magical lives with her help.

But the cult could not be kept at bay for too long, and vague signs of their re-emergence came in the form of unusual graffiti and other basic warnings. Not long after this did they deal their first real strike since their defeat: the abduction of Madame Mystère mere seconds before she was due to give a performance. Only after discovering a wax clone of her did the apprentices realize what had happened, but could find no trace of the cult in the wax museum.

In a cryptic letter found in the wreckage of her dressing room, Madame Mystère informed the five that the cult intended to resume their former goals, but not until they first removed her and the five apprentices as a threat. As a precaution, she concealed a set of wax golems of her own in the wax museum. Each of these golems would need to be found and their challenges passed to earn the artifacts left for the five, as well as for their own set of possible apprentices.

This time the five alone will not be enough to stop the impending evil, and time is already running out...

Short Summary:

Eight years ago an evil cult set up its base in a local wax museum, then took over an elementary school and started kidnapping children from the school, so as to harvest their life force to feed their masters and take over the world, after which the kids were replaced with wax versions to avoid suspicion. This continued until only five kids were left: these five were contacted by Madame Mystère, a former member of the order who left when it became a cult, and they became her apprentices. The five kids managed to sneak into the wax museum and free their classmates, clearing the way for Madame Mystère to expose and stop the cult, if only temporarily.

Eight years later the cult comes back with a vengeance, ambushing and kidnapping Madame Mystère, but not before she leaves weapons and other artifacts to help her five apprentices at the wax museum, guarded by her own set of wax golems to keep them out of the cult's hands. She also warns the five that they will most likely need to find and teach apprentices of their own, since the cult has gathered strength and now they won't be strong enough to stop the cult alone this time around.

Rules

Follow these or face the consequences!

** The only online entities above my authority in this thread are the RPA Mods and Admins, so I will not hesitate to report you to the proper authorities if you violate their rules in any way in this thread. Beyond that, I will settle any and all disputes in this thread if they should arise, and with respect to my rules, what I say goes.

** My two primary annoyances in any RP are godmoding and powerplaying. Godmoding is making your character immune or unrealistically resistant to other characters' attacks, or having your character evade damage from others' attacks through unrealistic means. Powerplaying (or autohitting) is making your characters' attacks unreasonably powerful, or hitting/killing/kidnapping/otherwise influencing another character without the owner's permission and/or without giving any other character a reasonable chance to try to stop them. Both of these are very unfair and annoying, and I'm sure everyone here can agree with me that this RP is better off without them.

** Use some decency with the content of your posts. Yes, I'm well aware that this is a horror-style RP and some degree of leeway is inevitable, and in fact the rating for this RP is still a tentative one, but keep all post content within reasonable limits. In particular, I place high emphasis on the following:
---Cybering. There are many places on the Internet that let people talk about someone else's private parts, but this thread is not one of them. RPA specifically forbids it, I don't want it, and I will not hesitate to report you for it.
---Excessive blood, gore, etc. I realize that some degree of violence can and will appear in horror-ish RP's, but don't go too far or we'll have a problem. Anything involving someone's blood/internal organs/whatever being splattered all over the place in painfully descriptive detail will be severely frowned upon.
---Excessive cussing. This isn't quite as frowned upon as the other two, but it's still worth mentioning. Characters can get angry and let out some pretty nasty language, I understand, but keep it to a courteous level. If I see too much strong language flying around at any given time, we've got a problem.

** I do expect some effort from your posts, instead of just posting one word or sentence out of sheer laziness. You don't need to post a full-blown novel or excessively descriptive words, but typically one or more paragraphs should be just fine, and I won't nag you if you honestly cannot write at that level for any reason.

**Likewise, I expect some kind of originality in your characters, as Mary Sues can get very annoying. If in doubt, feel free to PM me for help, and I'll guide you through any issues your character may have.

** Magic-using characters can choose to specialize in a certain field of magic, and depending on their level of mastery some may even have multiple specialties. This is discussed in further detail in the Specialties section.

** Below is a special code phrase. PM me your profile(s) with that code phrase as the subject, so I'll know you read the rules. Once I approve your profile(s), feel free to post anytime you want!

Specialties

Magic-users in this RP can, and typically will, specialize in certain fields of magic. This does not exclude them from other fields by any means; it merely illustrates that the character is more skilled in casting spells from their specialized field(s) than they might be in casting spells from other fields. Likewise, characters who have no specialties are NOT unable to do magic, but it is more difficult for them to accomplish than it might be for someone who does have a specialty. The various fields of magic and the rules governing specialties are shown below.

** Depending on the character's level of mastery (how good they are at doing magic) they may be allowed to have more than one specialty. The levels of mastery for purposes of this RP, and the maximum number of specialties allowed for each level, are listed as follows:

---Theta: Average humans or casual dabblers, with little or no substantial understanding of magic. (Max. Specialties: 0)
---Delta: Apprentices and students of magic, or primarily self-taught casters, who possess a basic knowledge of magic and can perform some beginner spells, but lack the skill and/or experience of an average spellcaster. (Max. Specialties: 1)
---Gamma: Most typical spellcasters and more advanced apprentices. Although not true masters, they typically have sufficient understanding of the magical arts to hold their own in a fight or, if they so choose, to begin training apprentices to a limited degree. (Max. Specialties: 2)
---Alpha: Highly skilled magic users, this is the ideal level for a spellcaster to train apprentices. Their mastery and experience affords them a greater affinity for the magical arts than most magic users, and only a few high-level spells, if any, are beyond their capability. (Max. Specialties: 3)

** On the subject of multiple specialties, it is recommended to choose specialties that work well together (water and ice, earth and nature, etc.) but any set of non-incompatible specialties is acceptable. However, pairing together any two incompatible specialties (fire and ice, nature and death, etc.) is not allowed, UNLESS they are also paired with a third field that works well for both of the incompatible fields. (Example: A character cannot specialize in both Light and Darkness without ALSO specializing in Cosmic magic.)

** This isn't really a rule, but it's something that needs to be clarified. Just because any two fields are incompatible (Fire and Ice, for instance) does not mean that Fire specialists are unable to cast Ice magic; it only means that it is more difficult for Fire specialists to use Ice spells, although it can still be done with considerable effort and difficulty.

Specialties are divided into grey, white, and black specialties, and some may be within certain subcategories, such as elemental or synergy magic.

Sorted into Elemental and Astral fields.

Elemental: Not necessarily restricted to the elements, Elemental magic controls and manipulates any one of the basic physical aspects that comprise the Earthly plane, each through various means and methods.

Earth: Earth magic controls exactly that: rocks, metals, and essentially any substance found naturally within the earth. This allows them to form these minerals into various shapes, soften or harden soils and terrain, purify metals or precious stones for craftsmanship purposes, and even cause massive earthquakes or control magma and lava.
Good With: Nature, Fire
Incompatible: Air, Energy

Fire: Fire magic controls fire and heat. This allows them to heat substances within a finite range, control any nearby flames, or even ignite flammable objects within range. Non-flammable substances such as water can also be ignited in this way, but without constant concentration from the caster the resulting flame will quickly burn out.
Good With: Energy, Earth
Incompatible: Water, Ice

Air: Air magic deals with controlling the winds, as well as gaseous substances in general. In addition to being able to create powerful winds and tornadoes, more advanced spells in this field can be combined with other types of magic to poison the air within a certain range or to remove such poisons, among a variety of other possibilities.
Good With: Water, Energy, Ice
Incompatible: Earth

Water: Water magic involves controlling water, or more specifically its liquid form. Similarly to Air magic, Water magic can be used to summon massive waves maelstroms, and can also be combined with spells from other fields to pollute or purify waters within a given range, among a variety of other effects.
Good With: Air, Ice
Incompatible: Fire

Ice: Ice magic controls cold, as well as water in its solid form as ice, snow, or hail. As such, they can cool objects within range to extreme degrees, cause blizzards and other such phenomena, and manipulate the ice around them into various structures and shapes.
Good With: Air, Water
Incompatible: Fire, Energy

Energy: Energy magic deals with the physical energies present in the Earthly plane, including thunder, lightning, and electricity, able to absorb these energies into themselves and redirect them outward as force fields and projectiles. In addition to the obviously powerful effects of controlling these aspects, some modern-day Alpha specialists in this field are currently experimenting with various combinations of these and other spells in hopes of possibly influencing modern technology.
Good With: Fire, Air
Incompatible: Earth, Ice

Astral: Dealing with forces beyond the physical aspects, this versatile subcategory bears notable similarities to both white and black magic, and the neutrality of these specialists depends on their ability to balance themselves and their magical prowess. However, it is more common than not for white- and black-aligned spellcasters to specialize in at least one of these fields for practical reasons.

Foresight: Foresight magic deals with divination and remote viewing. In essence, spells from this field seek to expose or discover what the caster might otherwise be unable to detect, from the whereabouts of a cheating boyfriend to the imminent arrival of an enemy wizard's attack.
Good With: Mind, Cosmic
Incompatible: Illusion

Mind: Mind magic uses the caster's own mind as a catalyst, allowing them to perform incredible feats ranging from telekinesis and telepathy to the effective control of another person's mind.
Good With: Foresight, Illusion
Incompatible: Cosmic

Illusion: As the name suggests, Illusion magic aims to confuse or deceive its targets, allowing the caster to conceal themselves or other aspects from the targets, or distract the targets temporarily. This field sports a wide range of spells to this effect, including invisibility, optical illusions, and hallucinations, and the degree of realism of the illusions depends on the level of mastery of the caster.
Good With: Mind
Incompatible: Foresight

Cosmic: Cosmic magic draws power directly from the Astral planes, and casters in this field can use this to conjure powerful Astral storms and other phenomena on the Earthly plane. Also, advanced casters can even summon, bind, or banish Astral creatures as they desire, though certain creatures may require a high-level caster to safely tame.
Good With: Foresight, Light, Darkness
Incompatible: Mind, Nature, Shamanism

Sorted into Synergy and Virtue fields.

Synergy: These fields of magic seek not to control the forces they employ, but to work together with them to preserve balance and the natural order. Specialists in the Synergy fields are keenly attuned to the natural magical energies present in the world, and these energies trust the specialist as to willingly aid them when called upon.

Nature: Nature magic works with the inherent connection between all living things, as well as the delicate balance on which that connection depends. Plants have a distinct affinity with the caster and will readily aid them as needed, and the caster can also communicate and often empathize with animals and - sometimes less likely - with astral creatures.
Good With: Earth, Shamanism, Life
Incompatible: Death, Blood, Cosmic

Shamanism: Shamanic magic utilizes the close connection between the physical world and the realm of spirits - including, but not restricted to, the spirits of the dead - allowing the specialist to call on and cooperate with these spirits for various effects. As not all spirits are aligned with good, this field also deals with purification of oneself and of others to ensure that balance is maintained.
Good With: All White Specialties
Incompatible: Cosmic, All Black Specialties

Virtue: The Virtue fields actively seek to defeat the effects of black magic, and to work for the cause of good in every way possible. These spells typically make frequent use of the Astral plane of Light, using its inherent antipathy to its counterpart, the Astral plane of Darkness, to counteract evil magic.

Life: Life magic is in general equivalent to healing magic, able to heal wounds, cure poisons and diseases, and undo any magical effects intended to harm or kill others. More advanced specialists can take this even further, by healing a person of mental and astral injuries as well as physical.
Good With: All White Specialties
Incompatible: All Black Specialties

Light: Light magic directly draws its power from the Astral Plane of Light, allowing them to control and intensify light for varying effects. Beyond that, the primary purpose of these spells is to negate black magic wherever it takes effect, since most evil spells draw from the Astral Plane of Darkness.
Good With: Life, Shamanism, Guardian, Cosmic
Incompatible: All Black Specialties

Guardian: Guardian magic deals mostly with protection magic, seeking not so much to negate evil magic as it does to prevent its effects from causing harm. Beginning Guardian specialists will need to constantly focus on their subject to maintain the protection of a Guardian spell, but advanced specialists can protect a limited group of people (depending on their level of mastery) with less effort.
Good With: Life, Light, Shamanism
Incompatible: All Black Specialties

There are no subcategories for black magic.

Death: Death magic includes, and is commonly associated with, the black art of necromancy, able to enslave the bodies and spirits of the dead as the caster desires. Other aspects of Death magic include mastery over poisons and diseases, both mundane and magical, able to cripple the living or even steal their life force with their dark spells.
Good With: Blood, Darkness
Incompatible: All White Specialties

Blood: Blood magic seeks to directly cause harm to another person, effects including bludgeoning or slashing the subject through an unseen force or causing internal injuries. It is often confused with Death magic for this reason, except Death magic has a variety of methods and purposes, whereas Blood magic works only to cause physical harm to its targets, more often than not to the point of death.
Good With: Death, Darkness
Incompatible: All White Specialties

Darkness: Darkness magic draws power directly from the Astral plane of Darkness, and all manner of shadows and darkness are at their command. Aside from that, this field also actively works to negate or counteract the effects of good magic, which typically draws power from the Astral plane of Light, the direct opposite of this field's power source.
Good With: Death, Blood, Cosmic
Incompatible: Light, Life, Guardian, Shamanism

Locations

The following is a list of special locations for this RP, each with a brief description. This list may be subject to change if necessary as the RP progresses.

The local elementary school. All five apprentices were students at this school when the cult took it over, and were ultimately the only students whom the cult failed to capture thanks to the efforts of Madame Mystère. Very soon after this the cult was driven out, and has since returned to normal. For now, at least.

Started in 1813 by wax artist Jonathan Wilfred, this place began as a simple studio for his work. His children inherited the studio after his death, and it has since expanded into a full-fledged museum. What few people know is that Mr. Wilfred was a member of the original order, and when some of his descendants took to its corrupted version, the cult used the wax museum as its local base. Following the cult's banishment, the waxworks has become a neutral ground for spellcasters, who often conceal golems disguised as wax figures in the museum to leave messages or other items for others. It is rumored that some casters have, and continue to, leave portals to worlds and eras similar to those portrayed by the exhibits, but this has never been clearly proven.

Madame Mystère's house, which was expanded over the course of her magic career to include a new age store at the front. In addition to weekly magic shows in the stage area next to the store, Madame Mystère also offers fortune telling of various types that are known throughout town to be eerily accurate, and the house itself is riddled with a number of spellbooks, ingredients, and magical items not sold in the store. The premises was closed off as a crime scene following Madame Mystère's disappearance - officially ruled as an unsolved kidnapping by the authorities - but prior to this she left each of her apprentices a special talisman, giving them access to this place and the items within in her absence.

Characters

With the exception of non-spellcasters, Madame Mystère's apprentices, and non-humanoid beings, character profiles are sorted by alignment, with the newest profiles at the bottom of each section.

Username: Lady Celeste
Character Name: Lucinda "Lucy" Crawford
Age: 17
Race: Human
Ethnicity: American
Occupation: High School Junior
Level of Mastery: Gamma
Specialties: Life, Shamanism
Weapon(s): A silver boline (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ab/Boline.wicca.jpg) that can shrink to look like a crescent charm.
Fighting Style(s): Tai Chi
Appearance: http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee215/silverluna24/teen_school/normal.jpg
Personality: An egalitarian at heart, Lucy is easily unnerved by the more narrow minds of some of the spirits she encounters. She also tends to be slightly meddlesome, especially if she feels that something is wrong or out of place.
Bio: Lucy was in the fourth grade when the cult first struck at Kendrick Elementary. Her best friend, Jane Lewis, would often confide in her about seeing strange figures stalking her on the way home from school and around her house at night, and Lucy offered to walk with her home from school to try to reassure her. On several occasions during these walks, Lucy would see the figures as well, until at last they were both attacked. Lucy tripped and fell into a retention pond as they tried to run away, and by the time she managed to swim out, Jane and the figures were gone. The next day at school Jane didn't seem to recognize her at all and kept mostly to herself, which Lucy could not understand until she found the envelope in her desk from Madame Mystère. After learning the truth from Madame Mystère, Lucy gladly became one of her apprentices along with four other kids, eventually joining the other apprentices in raiding Wilfred Memorial Waxworks to rescue Jane and the other captured kids.
This led to the cult's downfall, or at least she thought it did until Madame Mystère was reported missing with her home found a near wreck. Police found a letter addressed to the five informing them of items left for them in the wax museum, also warning them of the dangers ahead. At first she spoke nothing of the letter to anyone but her fellow apprentices, but when the five of them became suspects in their teacher's disappearance, she was forced to reveal the truth to Detective Park in order to clear their names. She now actively cooperates with Detective Park on the case.
Other: Prior to Madame Mystère's disappearance, Lucy took to researching her family history. This drew attention from the spirits from some of her Puritan ancestors who are less than thrilled about her magic, much to her annoyance.

It was here that she used her magical talents to earn herself a living as a magician, adopting the stage name Madame Mystère. When she learned of the cult's activities at the local elementary school, she tried to save as many of the children there as she could, but ultimately she managed to spare five whom she would take in as her students. He was the only one in his class that was able to master the spells that his master though him. He lived a normal life until “that man’, and the order then turned it into a cult. Other: He wares a type of astral armor that is hard to penetrate. This is always on him, but he wares cloth that covers it. There might be a way to remove what was done to him. If someone could figure out that he is not himself.

Weapon(s): Handgun, Switchblade, Taser
Fighting Style(s): Hapkido
Appearance: Detective Julian Park (http://celebrity-pics.movieeye.com/celebrity_pictures/Christopher_Meloni_390774.jpg)
Personality: Persistent and down-to-earth, especially with regard to his job. Once a hardened skeptic about anything he couldn't somehow prove, recent events have forced him to take a second look at the world around him.
Bio: Inspired by his father and grandfather before him, Julian joined the police force soon after graduating from law school, quickly becoming one of their top detectives. Every case he worked would always involve some form of usable, tangible evidence to lead him to the truth, and it taught him to rely on nothing less. More recently, however, he was assigned to investigate the disappearance of magician Madame Mystère, for which the only real clue he could find was an envelope with the names of five teenagers written on it. He promptly questioned the five teens about Madame Mystère and about the envelope, but they would not say much about the missing woman and refused to reveal the contents of the envelope. This did not sit well with Julian, and only prompted him to suspect they had a part in the disappearance. In a bid to pressure them he had the five officially named as suspects in the case. This plan worked when one of them, Lucy Crawford, came forward and revealed the truth about Madame Mystère, the five's magical training, and the cult's activities eight years ago. Julian severely doubted her story at first, demanding to see some kind of proof, and Lucy agreed to show him a private demonstration with a few basic spells, from levitating pencils in his office to making his coffee boil. To this day Julian cannot make sense of what he saw, but he had to acknowledge that she was telling the truth, officially dropping the five as suspects and agreeing to cooperate with them on the case.
Other: Julian is currently happily married to his college sweetheart, Assistant District Attorney Shelby DuBois (http://attorneymentoring.com/images/Female_Lawyer.gif), and together they have two children: 8-year-old Mitchell (http://kwtv.images.worldnow.com/images/11511791_BG4.jpg) and 5-year-old Stella (http://www.sonomapreschooldirectory.com/files/QuickSiteImages/girl_purple2.jpg), both of whom attend Kendrick Elementary.
