[This roleplay is rated for violence, language, drug and alcohol use, sexual and suggestive themes. And don't forget the extra violence.]

The world as we know it has been destroyed. The once great civilizations of mankind destroyed by the distrust and dishonesty of their leaders. In the year 2010, the nukes were launched all over the world. Billions were wiped out in an instant and many cities were reduced to little more than sand and ash. Much of the planet became a barren shell of it‘s former beauty, burned by the nuclear flames and now suffering a terrifying nuclear winter. This event became called The Cataclysm by the survivors.

Broken cities still rise in vain to the skies and still hold relics from before The Cataclysm. In and around these cities, mankind started to rebuild in the years following the mass destruction. The first step was to regain breathable air. After the nuclear destruction, breathable air became virtually non-existent for a long time. Because of this, the survivors mostly retreated underground into metro stations and mines to escape the deadly surface. Many mines were extended to become connected with one another to allow the survivors to better interact and have more space within which to live.

On the west coast of the Great Waste lies the greatest shelter built in North and South America. A massive installation built into the Rocky Mountains called Paradise Fence. Running along the full length of the mountains, the Fence provided a shelter home for hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of people all other the world who managed to flee their homes during The Cataclysm. Now, generations later, the Fence is still occupied and operational.

At first, the goal of many was to reach Paradise Fence. But, the harsh conditions of the seemingly endless freezing winter coupled with the dangers of the Waste soon made that just an idea. So, the Dreamers set their eyes on different goals.

Now, generations later, people have returned to the surface. Though the surface remains a frozen in nuclear winter, breathable air has returned. Many of the more scientific minds speculated that humans just adjusted after so long due to surface air leaking into the underground. However, no one cared. Man could return to the surface.

Settlements began springing up all over. Most were built around clean water sources while others were started within the ruins of larger cities. Civilization slowly returned. However, even in trying times such as these there are those who are not content with how the settlements are and instead have turned to simply taking what they want by force.

The threat of bandits and raiders led the larger settlements, which soon became more like city-states, to build defendable walls to keep such people out. For the smaller settlements, it was not so easy. They had to quickly learn to defend themselves.

But, there still exist those who are willing to help others. Alongside these bandits, thieves, and raiders come the mercenaries who are willing to help folks in need. For the right price of course. Their willingness to do almost any job and fix any problem has earned the mercenaries the nickname “Handymen.”

The Great Waste is a land filled with dreamers. Men and women seeking fortune in any form it will come in. Some dig in the ruins in hopes of finding relics from ages past. Many dig in the Waste hoping to find new water wells of clean water. Dreams are what keep the denizens of the Great Waste alive. Dreams are all most of the people have left.

Within the larger settlements, usually partially rebuilt cities, there is a stable structure of law and government. In these large city-states, people can sleep safely defended from the unforgiving bands of bandits and militant raiders. The larger settlements keep regular trade and contact lines with one another. However, in the smaller settlements out in the waste law sometimes means little. The people outside the defended cities must do whatever they can to survive and have learned quickly how to fend off enemies to avoid destruction.

Rumors abound about underground vaults built before The Cataclysm that house all kinds of pre-destruction treasure and artifacts. Many dreamers of the Great Waste have made their life goal finding at least one such vault. If the vaults do exist, what is hidden in them may be able to change the face of the Great Waste.

However, bandits and raiders are not the only thing dangerous within the Great Waste. In the wake of the nuclear destruction came mutated creatures better suited to life on the new surface than mankind. These creatures regularly attack Digger teams and caravans, viciously slaughtering and eating everyone. But what really has settlements worried are rumors of psychic creatures. Humanoid things that could kill men without touching them. The creatures soon became known simply as “The Strangers.” These rumors of psychic creatures were taken more and more seriously as the attacks increased, leading people to think it was all the doing of the Strangers. The large statelet in the ruins of New York decided that other settlements must be warned. The Handymen have been asked to choose a team to travel across the waste, warning all the settlements they met of the new threat. The ultimate goal of the team would be travel all the way across the Great Waste and reach Paradise Fence to warn them and ask for their aid against The Strangers.

So go, Dreamers and Diggers! Go and seek your fortune in this wasteland however you see fit! And good luck and good fortune to those who volunteer to make the perilous journey to Paradise Fence to ask for aid against the new threat!

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED FOR SURVIVAL IN THE WASTE
Weapons - Weapons come in all varieties from knives to firearms. Most firearms used are models recovered from before the disaster in military bases and armories. The more technically adept people tend to take parts from these old weapons and rebuild new models to sell or use themselves. It is not uncommon for people to have custom gear.

Clothing - Above ground, winter gear is a must have due to the freezing conditions. Underground, it is generally not as cold and lighter clothing is safe to wear.

Masks - Masks are very common. Usually gasmasks due to the lack of eyesight restriction. These masks are worn mostly to protect the face from the freezing cold. Gasmasks and rebreather masks are usually the most common since freezing cold tends to make the air a little harder to breath.

IMPORTANT TERMS/PHRASES AND STUFF
Dreamer - General term for anyone living the Waste. Most commonly used to refer to people not tied down to a city.

Digger - One who actively seeks and explores ruins and such to find artifacts from before The Cataclysm.

Handyman - The mercenaries of the Great Waste. Willing to take on any job for the right price. Recently, the Handymen have been building ties with each other to form a “guild” of sorts.

Handyshack - Building where a Handyman can check up on available jobs. There is one in every major city in the Waste.

“Plan K” - A plan saved for when all else fails that involves doing something that is most likely very dangerous and very stupid to achieve optimum results.

“Plan R” - When all else fails, kill everyone who isn’t you or your friend.

Standing at five feet, nine inches, Bard possesses a slender, yet hard and fairly muscular frame. Short, black hair adorns his head and he has sharp, lightly angular features. His eyes, being sharp as well, are dull green in color and his jaw is slightly squared. All in all, he can be considered a reasonably handsome individual.

Clothing - Heavy, winter greatcoat worn over a long sleeve, custom made jacket reinforced with Kevlar and some metal plates for protection. Under those is worn a thermal shirt to help retain heat. Legs are covered by thermal undergarments worn under heavy winter trousers tucked into black boots. Head gear is either a wool skull cap or metal combat helmet depending on situation. Also carries customized rebreather mask unit.

Personality: Calm, collected, and generally laid back. He is a difficult individual to anger and though he understands the need for survival, he is much more likely to attempt to understand something he has never encountered before immediately jumping to a violent solution. Sometimes.

Short history: He was born to parents who lived and worked with a traveling merchant caravan. From a young age, he saw how unforgiving the Waste can be for people who stay in one place their whole lives. He grew up hearing tales of adventure from the older members of the caravan. He attributed those stories to his decision to go off on his own rather than remain part of the caravan. He was eighteen when he parted ways with his family to become a Handyman. The work suited him just fine since it offered plenty of travel opportunities and chances to share his tales and experiences with others. So, he soon dropped his name and became simply known as The Bard. He soon built a reputation for being a reliable and reasonable Handyman and the rumblings of a possible job to attempt to reach Paradise Fence has peaked his interest.

Appearance: Spike stands at around six feet tall with pale skin and bright blue eyes. He has an outstanding athletic build from running through the frozen wastes, scavenging for more useful scrap that survived the Cataclysm. He has a blocky jaw with a thick scruff growing on his face and shot cut blonde hair on his head, though he usually wears a beanie. He wears military grade thermal fatigues with fur lining the collar and hood for extra warmth. He also wears gloves and boots (his boots have spikes at the toes to assist in climbing faces of ice) of the same make with and a black flak jacket loaded with filled pouches to top it all off.

Personality: Cocky and sure of himself. He is a deadly efficient shot, and he knows it. Keeps a confident air about himself when visiting safe areas, he finds that attracts clients better. When in the field, it means life or death, and that is no joking matter unless you are the one still on the life route after all hostiles have been filled with holes.

Short history: Spike was born in the underground government bunker complex that ran beneath the streets of Washington DC. The bunker expanded to many maintenance tunnels that connected to the subway network, which allowed near-seamless interaction and trade among the other bands of survivors. Having been down in the sunless tunnels for so long, most of the population have become extremely pale and fair. Still, even after the re-settling started, most of the inhabitants of the DC underground refused to go to the surface more than was needed.

Spike grew up knowing how to use guns and how vital team work was. Military tactics and military rules were passed down from parents to children in the DC underground. Bandits and raiders were never much of a worry unless they came in a war-band, but it was the mutants that kept the DC underground survivors in their tunnels. Spike lost many more friends to mutants than he did to raiders.

When he came of age, Spike took his gear and his guns and set out into the Waste to become a Handyman, in which his proficiency with guns made him very good at his job. He heard through the grapevine that people were gathering in the New York settlement to start something big; some collaborative effort to warn the other colonies and settlements of some new threat. It was refreshing to see the scattered remnants of the US come together again, like how it was in the stories Spike had listened to since he was a child. Not wanting to miss an opportunity like this, Spike hitched along with a merchant caravan to New York.

Under her white parka trimmed in blue fur she wears several layers of thermal wear topped with a wool sweater. She wears a blue balaclava over her face. Her legs are also layered in thermal. Over the thermal are water resistant white and blue camo ski pants. On her feet are black snow boots lined in fur with detachable ice cleats. Black leather gloves lined in lamb's wool cover her calloused hands.

Personality:Rayne is quick to smile--a ruse used to fool her adversaries. She is sharp of tongue and often ill-tempered. Known for her stubborness, she will push her will on any one foolish enough to fall for her wiles.

Short history: Rayne's history is a mystery, even to her. Found wandering the wastelands at the young age of 14, she was taken in by a group of diggers who adopted her as their own. Suffering from hypothermia, her body battered and bruised, she fought for 2 months to overcome her injuries. Unable to remember the events before her rescue, she often has nightmares with scattered images of masked figures.

Leaving her "family" at the age of 21, Rayne now searches the wastelands for relics of the past. Floating from group to group, she is often on her own for long periods of time. With a goal of finding the Paradise Fence, she travels steadily towards the Rocky Mountains.

Clothing: white jacket and matching snow pants. Not too bulky but very warrm and insulated. insulated grey hiking boots. grey wool skull cap. Old ski goggles. A pair of long underwear, wool socks, a bright blue polo and old blue jeans underneath.
Personality: Flamboyant. loves to joke around, and rarely acts his age. Becomes deadly serious when faced with danger or a serious situation. Very restless, dislikes staying in one spot for long, which conflicts with his love for being a sniper.
Short history: Born in a small village in the Appalachians in what was once upastate New York. He was raised well enough, but was disliked for his childish behavior, especially later in his life. When he was 15 he ran away and wound up in the ruins of New York City, where he found refuge. He learned to shoot with his father. He became a good shot very soon,but not the best by any means. His claim to fame was his ability to sneak up very close to a target without being noticed. He was given his rifle as a gift from his father after returning home when he was 27. His parents missed him, but understood why he ran away. Now he's a handyman, but he couldn't care less. he does it just to move around. See new things. Still, he has never been over the Appalachians, and looks forward to a new opportunity.

Personality: Not much to say other than rational and unsociable.
Short history: Born after the Cataclysm in a bunker. Always told NEVER to go out. He of course went and found the world to be uglier but less stuffy than the bunker. Was taken in and trained by mercs. He joined their ranks recently and has a talent for close combat.
