Six months ago on the planet Beylix on the edge of Known Space, a Wanted Space Pirate, A Londinium Spy, and a Wildly Eccentric Robot with Multiple Personality programming issues and steampunk style rang the door bell for the Brotherhood of Man Temple. When nothing happened for a minute, they rang the bell again. And again. And again.

Finally, a small door opened and a bleary-eyed young initiate looked out and said crossly, "Oy! Keep it down, mate! It's the flippin' middle of the night and I gotta get up in an hour for morning ritual! Do us a favor and come back then!"

"No," said the Robot with the Linden Jars strapped to its back. "We come to deliver her into your care."
"Huh?" blinked the Initiate. "Deliver who?"

The robot stepped aside to reveal a young blonde-haired girl who smiled up at the initiate.
"Cor, who are you?"
"Butterfly?" the girl asked, leaning towards the Space Pirate.
"She's the Wanderer," the Robot told him, a hint of reproof in its electronic voice.
"Eh? OY!" the Initiate yelled, pointing his finger at the robot, "You shouldn't go around pointing fun at other people's religions! Bad karma, that! Save you from getting your head bashed in!"

The robot's eyes flashed several different colors before settling back down to black, and shaking its head.
"Summon the Master of the Gate and rejoice, you fool," it ordered scornfully. "A new Wanderer has been found, and she needs all the protection of the Brotherhood of Man."

Beylix
Interstellar Tourist Location & Alien Marketplace
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++

During the Pax Confederation, Beylix was a minor mining world. The richest veins proved to be in the desert, so the mining companies built small company towns around them, ignoring the more temperate zones with their lush vegetation and somewhat aggressive predators. Civil war broke out and the miners left.

Years later, a Blue Confederation convoy, escorting refugee ships from a dozen worlds through the system was attacked by raiders from the Red Faction. The civilian ships made a run for the mining plane to put as much distance between them and the fighting. However, as they passed Beylix's smaller moon, they came under attack by a wing of Red Faction fighters. Afraid they were about to be destroyed, the civilian captains ordered the refugees to the lifepods and to abandon ship.

When the Blue Confederation commander realized what was happening, he gave orders to retreat. Those ships still able to make the jump to hyperspace left, chased by the surviving Red Faction ships. Fighters and small craft of both sides, unable to make the transition, were left behind.

A truce was declared, both sides following the lifepods down to the surface, following a beacon left behind at the miners' rather basic starport. They wound up settling in clumps - the civilians occupying the miner's quarter and the lifepods of the new quarter, and of course the soldiers occupying the shanty towns of the Blue and the Red Quarters. And they waited for rescue. And they waited.

Finally, a Wilder, an alien being from an uncontacted planet, convinced the refugees and the soldiers that if they would not move from the starport for the more temperate areas of the planet, then they would have to dig a canal to bring fresh water from the mountains to them.

It took them months of hard work, with many deaths and injuries to build the canal. The Wilder himself did not survive, but his dream of bringing water and building a community worked. They raised a statue to the Canal Builder and for the most part gave up hope of rescue.

Finally, after sixteen years, two ships arrived in system, both heavily armed and speaking a language unknown to most of them. They weren't of any known faction of the Pax Confederation, but were instead an alien race from an uncontacted world - Humans. Just like the Canal Builder and a girl they had found in a forgotten stasis chamber.

While relations with the Humans were a little strained at first by the theft of an engine component by some Red Faction fanatics, the curiosity of finding so many different races living in a system not that far from Sol with a compatible environment, not to mention a mysterious statue of a human standing in the central square, turned it into the first interstellar tourist spot, and the location of the first temple of the Brotherhood of Man.

To Sum Up What Was Learned Previously
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++++++++++++++

The Girl known as Butterfly has been confirmed by the Brotherhood of Man to be a Wanderer - in truth, a very human-looking alien who belongs to a race that most believed was mythical rbrm before the Pax Confederation was formed over a millennium ago. Her true name was Reifani, and she had been mind-wiped and banished by her people for breaking their most sacred law - opening up the barrier that hides their world from outsiders in order to rescue a dying human whose ship had gotten lost in space.

The human, the son of Earth Ambassador Paris, wound up under the control of Lord Vargas, a stout segregationist who believed the only way to protect Zaya from discovery was to ensure no one could threaten it. His father had destroyed the Pax Confederation, he would ensure the downfall of this new alien threat that had landed on their doorstep. Paris became Vargas' unwilling personal assassin, sent back to the human colonies to spy on them and to destroy any threat Lord Vargas perceived.

Including Reifani, Paris' rescuer, who after two decades in stasis awaiting her banishment was teleported by technology unknown to human kind into the laundry room of the Interstellar Cruise Ship Scorpio. The only reason she survived was the help she received from a handful of the passengers, most notably - Daniel Doverton-Hawke of MI-6 from the Londinium Colony; Llewellyn "Kes" Caesaro, a wanted space pirate from Kzae; and a rogue robot S.C.H.I.Z.O (Socially Compatible High Intellect Zest Outfit).

She also received help from two Zayans - Helene, Reifani's aunt, who works for the underfunded Zayan Bureau of Other Worlds Intelligence (BOWI); and Eachert, a copy of a personality implanted as a sort of personal tutor from the Zayan Mind Banks and eccentric genius, now implanted inside S.C.H.I.Z.O.

Paris, who had died once during interrogation by Daniel, was regenerated by Lord Vargas. Following Vargas' arrest, Paris was taken back by Helene and the BOWI to Zaya and his fate is unknown.

In the six months that have passed, Reifani, now known as "Butterfly", has become the Brotherhood of Man's own version of the Dali Lama. Unable to recover her destroyed memories, they have started schooling her in basic knowledge and skills. However, there is a pressure on the Brotherhood of Man to bring Butterfly to Earth to meet with the Council for a planned month-long visitation. The Brotherhood of Man has decided she would travel best with familiar friends, and have reached out to the ones who brought her to the temple - Daniel, Kes, and S.C.H.I.Z.O./Eachert.

The ship that will bring Butterfly to Earth? The Zodiac Line's Interstellar Cruise Ship Scorpio.

Character Creation

Things to consider:

The Zodiac Line runs twelve interstellar cruise ships in a big-circle path that visits 21 planets in one year before returning to Earth. The Big Cruise offers incredible opportunities for tourism. The number of government & corporate officials and couriers transporting encrypted data that cannot be transmitted also offers incredible opportunities for interstellar espionage as well.

And some corporations have found it to be an excellent way to make troublesome executives or former employees vanish for a year.

The Zodiac Line incorporates the latest in robotics and bioplastic technology. Bioplastic is a liquid plastic polymer that can be programmed to take a wide range of basic shapes. Works great as reconfigurable rooms and self-repairing/self-cleaning carpets. The ship uses Dark Matter Engines that essentially pull it through "Interspace", a transitional level between normal space and hyperspace. Only the Zayans have hyperspace engines, it is not available to any other race at this time. Dampening fields inside the engine chamber prevent Dark Matter from protruding more than 10% into normal space - catastrophic failure of damping fields could result with Dark Matter emerging into normal space, tearing the ship apart from the inside..

Primary personal tech is the Omni - it's a pocket or wrist computer with wireless networking, allowing it to access planetary/ship networks, act as an electronic wallet, and a personal audio/visual entertainment system. Accepts voice commands with limited A.I.-like ability, can also project holographic and/or neural displays if the user is socketed (two-four data ports on the back of the neck with short-ranged encrypted bluetooth for Omni and workstation devices, although most intelligence agencies prefer that mode is disabled to prevent data theft.)

Interstellar communication is possible but slow, taking an hour to broadcast a six-letter combination that can take several weeks to reach the edge of human space from a planet transmitting network or orbiting ship. Most data is transferred interplanetary by using portable armored black box systems by trusted couriers. Many ships will have dedicated servers for transporting news and email from system to system.

Personal weapons remain slug throwers, although laser weapontry is available for military use. Industrial lasers are short-ranged devices requiring battery packs or external power source, use mostly for welding and cutting. A short-ranged sonic weapon known as a "Bass Stunner" is used to knock out people harmlessly but has side-effects where if someone gets excited for the next few days after being stunned, will fall unconscious for a few hours.

Characters would be passengers aboard the ship (no crew applications accepted).

Please PM me if you're interested in playing a courier (corporate or government), a spy (much the same thing) or a member of the Brotherhood of Man.

I've offered this game twice. First time it went a couple of pages then died, but the second time it ran from August 1, 2011 until November 21, 2012. This is a continuation of that second game, which you will find in the Sci-Fi Roleplay Hall of Fame (http://role-player.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=36).

Player Name: Tyler Gibbons

Character Name: Gabriel Korgan Ugusani Cojijiti Tusuru III

Deck/Cabin Assignment: Silver Star Cabins

Age: 34
Gender: Male
Physical Description: Weighing in at roughly 260 pounds one would expect Gabriel to look exactly like his father and grandfather - and he does. A mean scowl permanently set on his scarred face, a crooked nose that has been broken in a fight or ten, and bulging muscles used to bruise, batter, and beat anyone who gets in his way. The lumberjacks beard also helps give the impression of don't-fuck-with-me, I-eat-men-bigger-than-you. Basically stuff a hairy gorilla into an uncomfortable touristy shirt and cargo shorts and you have Gabriel Korgan Ugusani Cojijiti Tusuru the Third dead to rights. He wears another set of cloths, but if you catch him in those then the chances are you're going to be experiencing a very uncomfortable stay for the duration of the cruise. Unconscious bound and gagged, and hooked into a make-shift life preservation system.

Profession: Master Chief Petty Officer

Bio: Born on Beaumonde Gabriel never actually had a life as a lumberjack like his forefathers. His parents, having moved to earth for safer living, raised Gabriel as an earthling. His lumberjack appearance never got him teased once at school, probably because he was so big for a ten year old. Everything after that is just needless history so far as Gabriel is concerned. His life began in earnest when he signed up with the Military and began his life of service. You'd expect everything Gabriel shows himself to be, a brute who hits first and asks later why he did it. You'd also be dead wrong to assume that Gabriel is stupid. Graduating top of his class at MIT with the military paying his way Gabriel became one of the best men the Navy has had when it comes to surveillance and sabotage. No one ever expects the lumbering brute to be paying attention, with his pea-sized brain, to what the more important "upper crust" are saying.

Gabriel's military sheet record is blacker than a Walmart ink-pen.

This is a great character! I love him! Are you working for Terran Military Intelligence?

You do need to pick an appropriate cabin:

Deck 1: Nova Cabins (Super expensive luxury suites)
Deck 2: Gold Star Cabins (Luxury), Silver Star Cabins (Vista - Business Class)
Deck 5 Blue Star Cabins (Standard)
Deck 6: Red start Star Cabins (Economy)

You probably want Silver or Blue. Silver will have you mixing with the upper crust, Blue and Red with the common people. Red cabins are smaller.

Potatrobot
01-24-2013, 09:03 PM
Player Name: Potatrobot
Character Name: Schizo. Infrequently goes by Mic.
Gender: Mostly male.
Deck/Cabin Assignment: Deck 5, Star's End Bar (upon return)
Description: Robot model: S.C.H.I.Z.O (Socially Compatible High Intellect Zest Outfit). A humanoid robot, with eyes and joints that glow from between the shining silver plates that make up his form.
Profession: Before being pulled into an adventure beyond the stars he could only see from the Scorpio, Schizo worked unofficially for the Star's End bar on deck five.
Bio: Schizo is one of a range of robots (produced by Zodiac) designed to keep people company. They have many interchangeable identities, each of which has a different set of interests and skills. They summon an identity that has the same interests as the person they are talking to in order to ensure that they are keeping said person the best of possible company.

However, Schizo suffers from a terrible glitch: the random summoning of seemingly infinite identities; the robotic equivalent of a multiple identity crisis. As such, he randomly jumps to different identities without intent, often blaring out random phrases respective to said identity, although he does sometimes show some degree of control over himself(selves). However he does not often recall schizophrenic fits, where he jumps to many different identities in a short span of time. Each different identity is represented by a different voice and colour that his eyes and joints take on. His neutral identity is represented by white glowing eyes and joints and sports a sort of 'Optimistic Yes Man' approach to life. Other identities can be violent and aggressive, sad and passive, or just outright strange and unrelated.

During his travels with Daniel, Kes, Helen, and the amalgamation of Eachert and Reifani, Schizo was downgraded by Zodiac corporation, giving him the freedom to bend, break, or totally disregard the first robot law, allowing him to harm humans. Later, Eachert managed to transfer himself from Reifani's brain to Schizo's processor, where he resides similar to one of Schizo's personae. However, his has greater priority over Schizo's body than any one persona, and so assumes control of it half of the time, while the other half belongs to Schizo himself and his many identities.

Equipment: Schizo carries a bizarre assortment of items and trinkets. The most weapon-like would be a small laser pistol that is powered by two, large Leyden jars that he wears on his back. Other notable objects include a manually operated mechanical bladed gauntlet, an antique grenade, a set of Star's End playing cards, a rubber duck and an old radio head set. Also to note, he owns one of John Paris's tuxedo suits, one with a white Ace-of-Spades emblem on the left breast and on the left side of a matching trilby hat, and two leather shoes with white insteps.

Strengths: He can adapt to a wide variety of cultures and crowds and get along with many types of people. Assuming one of his many identities can lend him knowledge, expertise and experience on subjects he would normally be unfamiliar with. Even without them, however, he has the ability to immerse himself in locked computer systems and access any information or functions available on the system.

Weaknesses: He is unpredictable and his schizophrenic events are never predicted. This makes him difficult to talk to, and pretty much any interaction with him becomes confusing. Eachert's domination over Schizo's body causes his heat-to-light energy converters to run in reverse, absorbing light and heating up the unit at a steady rate. This has the potential to cause the unit damage.

SUDDENLY!

Oak Berbark
01-25-2013, 03:23 AM
Player Name: Oak Berbark
Character Name: Slish Al-Vaegir
Deck/Cabin Assignment: Red Star 637
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Description: Slish is like all Sajikis (http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100528195525/starwars/images/1/1d/Killik-TUR.jpg), barely indistinguishable from other males. He stand a lanky six feet tall and has a red hue to his carapace, which goes nicely to the ragged cloth poncho he wears. He has a belt looped around the poncho with two pouches and a holster for his pistol attached. Around his neck hangs a Sajiki Sight-stone in the shape of the milky way spiral, and to his side is an over the shoulder satchel. Slish's blank emerald green eyes and bone colored mandibles make telling his emotions very difficult to the untrained eye, And His movements vary between graceful smooth motions, to erratic twitches mattering on both his mental state and company.
Profession: Sajiki Missionary

Bio: Slish was born into a noble caste on the Sajiki sanctuary world in the Kalavan system, one of the few systems with a sun that emits the radiation necessary for Sajiki population growth. He grew up with the family guided goals of becoming a scholar and eventually contributing to Sajiki Philosophy and Science. It was at the university in which he met a religious young female Sajiki who had Slish smitten on first sight. Following this woman Slish abandoned his original scholarly path and became a missionary spreading the Matriarch's philosophy to alien worlds around the galaxy. Slish kept to this path for 8 years until recently where he now finds himself alone with a canteen sized cryogenic capsule.

Strengths: Like all Sajikis,Slish posses strong stomach acids allowing him to digest most solids no matter their durability. He also is blessed with Sajiki telepathy allowing a sensory and emotional link between him and the individual. Other non-telepathic races can usually sense it as a slight itch to the back of their head along with whatever the Sajiki and bonded individual share.

Weakness: Due to his strong stomach acid Slish must be constantly digesting something, lending the race's nick-name of "Metalbiters" as many a Sajiki have been found nibbling on bulkheads. The telepathic link is also more dangerous for the Sajiki more than the recipient, as any shock to the nervous system can cause the Sajiki symptoms ranging from a migraine to a stroke mattering on the strength of the shock. and last of the Sajiki physiology is weak compared to humans making them hardly the type to pick let alone survive a battle.

Player Name: Azazeal849

Character Name: Daniel Doverton-Hawke (“Dan” or “Danny” to friends)

Deck/Cabin Assignment: Preferably, near or next to Butterfly's room so he can protect her effectively.

Description: Daniel is a 33-year-old human, born in New Yorkshire on planet Londinium (by descent he is probably Canadian or American, as surprisingly few actual Brits emigrated to Londinium).

He is Caucasian, with mild blue eyes, a strong jaw and a straight nose. His hair is short and dark, always combed back and carefully parted along the left side. He stands slightly above average height, and his frame is wiry rather than muscular. He can usually be seen strolling about the Scorpio in some form of dark coloured suit, often combined with a bowler hat and a silver-handled cane.

Like most Londinians (regardless of social class) he speaks with a soft RP accent, and his speech is always impeccably polite. Also like most Londinians, he suffers from moderate to severe caffeine addiction due to high consumption of tea.

Profession: Field agent with the Londinium Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) - better known to the public by its old name MI6. Officially, his job involves helping to prevent and resolve foreign conflicts, and ensuring that Londinium’s social and economic security is maintained.

Bio: Daniel grew up at Hawke Manor in New Yorkshire - a temperate land of rolling hills in Londinium’s southern hemisphere. The “cities” there are very spread out affairs, interspaced with Old Earth-inspired castles and cathedrals, all held together by an efficient mag-lev network (the trains of which are designed to resemble the steam locomotives of the early 20th century). Daniel graduated from Kingston-upon-Sur university with a second class degree in archaeology, and worked as a historian for two years before replying to a newspaper ad offering a job with "opportunities for foreign travel and adventure". It turned out to be an assessment centre for the Londinium SIS.

Daniel became involved with "the Zayan case" during an unrelated operation to capture a notorious space pirate, and almost by accident uncovered a Santosian conspiracy to make us of ancient Zayan tech. After helping foil that plot and seeing Butterfly safe to the Brotherhood temple on Beylix, Daniel was recalled to help deal with the aftermath. He has had a busy six months, working to bring in the corrupt former SIS agent Harris Brown and investigating the extent of Zayan influence on Londinium. When the SIS heard that Daniel had been personally asked for to help escort Butterfly to Earth, they dispatched him immediately - as much to keep an eye on the rogue Zayan Eachert as to protect Butterfly.

@ Oak Berbark - You're fine, I've added your character to the approved list.

That's interesting. Is he the same race as Char from the first story?I think he's a different race altogether. Shoot him, he's likely to snack on the bullet.

Enigma, this might be relevant - how are diplomatic relations between Space Canada (Beaumonde) and Space Britain (Londinium)? You two sort that out between yourselves. Keep in mind your systems are far enough away from each other that you don't rub shoulders very often.

NPC

Name: "Junkai"
Profession: Engineer
Current Occupation: Repair man, runs a small shop in Old Town.
Race: Bïeråndō or "Quad" - an eight-limbed (four arms/four legs) tailless aboreal race, admitted to the Pax Confederation in 473. Bïerå is a lighter gravity world, but the Quads appear to be adaptable to a wide range of gravity and conditions. Junkai is currently the only known Quad on Beylix.
Gender: Male
Age: Junkai is 157 human years of age. Like many of the refugees on Beylix, he was a recipient of a Pax Confederation Life Extension treatment that slowed his development and has greatly extended his life. As Junkai is childless, there is not that situation where the original refugees appear to be younger than their grandchildren.

History: Junkai was born on a Bïerån commercial ship, traveling between various member worlds of the Pax Confederation. Left his family to attend a university, where at some point he picked up several human languages - purpose unknown, since Earth was not contacted by the Pax Confederation.

Junkai left university after war broke out, joining up with the Blue Faction where he became a fighter pilot. Stranded on Beylix after a fleet action between the Red and Blue factions.

On Beylix, worked as a sort of "handyman", repairing and modifying salvaged technology needed for comfort and survival.

When the Shatner and the Nemoy arrived, it was Junkai who talked with them in English, acting as the translator between the stranded aliens and the human race. Junkai and the Ptagh medic Heust traveled out to meet with the Nemoy, crossing over naked inside transparent space suits to exchange greetings and to collect biological samples for the immunizing agents that prevent interspecies illnesses to affect the other races.

Junkai and his Odaga assistant were approved to study Nemoy's engines to suggest improvements to the control crystal system. Later it was discovered that the control crystals were targeted in the Red/Blue attacks. Ships whose control crystals were destroyed were unable to leave the system. Junkai, claiming to be acting under duress, stole Nemoy's spare control crystals and installed them in an alien warship that then departed.

Junkai's buiness was black-listed for several years as a result of that.

You're welcome Potatrobot! I've got an idea for you - the company would very welcome a chance to really study how you work, so they can duplicate your performance with others of your model. You may have a few robotic fans as well.

I've given you guys little more information about Harris Brown.

Azarael, this guy has a tendency to pop up in strange places. Now your agency knows Zayans have some sort of interstellar-ranged teleport system, they're starting to wonder if Harris Brown is Zayan.

He first popped up about five years ago, selling an explosive story about a partnership between two rivals for price fixing government shipbuilding contracts to a news outlet on Ariel. No visual, an envelope appeared on an editor's desk with some details and arrangement for cash payment. Everything they got in return was checked and confirmed, they ran the story and exposed it all. Follow-up stories sold on Three Hills, New Canaan, and Beylix, but it was weeks before the New York Times on Earth somehow managed to interview him briefly.

He claimed to be a Londinium citizen, a New Oxford journalism student who dropped out when his parents and younger brother died in a beanstalk accident at New Manchester. Part of the settlement with the managing company was a round trip ticket on a cruise line as a means of getting grieving relatives away from the press. As it turned out, the president of Brooks Manufacturing from Shilnon was also on board - the company that sold flawed components for the New Manchester elevator system happened to be one of the two rival companies Harris had reported.

While there was records of three Brown families killed in the New Manchester accident, SIS hasn't found any surviving son that matched the reporter's picture. Speculation is the reporter was a friend of the family, so traveling under his real name, possibly had some cosmetic surgery done to further disguise his identity.

Harris Brown has had a few run-ins with MI6, actually saving the life of one Phelps on Beylix two years ago, while investigating a kidnapping of the Ambassador's daughter. Phelps, of course, has denied any contact with Harris Brown within the last six months.

That's right, they were looking for him when he disappeared to Beylix! AND NOW THEY HAVE HIM.

Although I don't quite understand the 'Stopping Schizo from tearing him apart' line in the IC post. To the best of my knowledge they have never met.Someone shows up with pictures and wants to interview Butterfly, Eachert would want to be there too - so Schizo had to be there or near by, watching on a video feed.

There's also the matter of the interplanetary "Tatsu" crime syndicate that Paris' database implicated Brown in (Daniel gave the pictures to his superiors at the end of the previous story). Files that said Paris was working for Harris and suggested that it was him, not Lord Vargas, who wanted to kill an alien girl he could not have possibly met before.

Well, you'll have a chance to question him when you find him.

Potatrobot
02-26-2013, 08:26 AM
I'm still not quite catching onto the 'tearing him apart' bit. Sure, Schizo would have to be where near Harris in order for Eachert to, but he isn't particularly violent. Unless of course you mean 'tearing himself apart', which would make loads more sense because he's... him. Schizo. A split identity in a single body.

Indeed. I just meant that if SIS are worried about Zayans pulling strings behind the scenes, and know that this guy has a whole (alleged) secret criminal empire, then they may well suspect him of being a Zayan agent as you say.

Paris did definitively say that it was Vargas that sent him after Reifani, but interestingly, none of the evidence Daniel found explained why Paris committed several "atrocities" on Brown's behalf (or indeed why Vargas let him take any of his other supposedly "freelance" jobs) nor why he was feeding Brown info on the Santos operation. Because Vargas ordered him to? To piss Vargas off? Daniel and the SIS probably don't know.

I've decided to try something that has not been done in this roleplay before:

Two player characters.

Player Name: Potatrobot
Character Name: Jackson M. Garnet
Deck/Cabin Assignment: Deck 5, cabin number 521
Description: Jackson is a Caucasian middle-aged man, nigh on 36 years old. He has very dark black hair that he keeps slicked back with a hair product that varies with every planet he visits, and green eyes that require glasses, which are distinctively trapezoidal in shape and have a thick, black frame. Not particularly tall or physically built, Jackson can often be seen sitting down or standing idle, usually fiddling with a strange looking electric gadget. He also takes to wearing office clothes, even out of the office.
Profession: Jackson works for Zodiac corporation, in the IT support field. Six months ago he located Schizo's broken mainline feed, a single glance at which secured the fact that it was beyond diagnosis or replication. However, either out of over-excitement on the CEO's part or because he actually earned it, Jackson was promoted to chief of IT support.
Bio: Jackson was born and raised on planet Australis, a former Londinium colony with a relatively low, multicultural population despite its vast and varied landscape. It also happens to be the planet that Zodiac corporation chose to be the home of its HQ building complex. He learned to enjoy working with computers, and the ecstatic sensation he felt while teaching his high-school crush at the time to use the more advanced features of a wrist Omni set his course permanently: he'd help dumb people use computers. And thus, IT support with Zodiac. Nothing came of the crush, though.

Such a position has its perks. Apart from knowing how almost all of Zodiac's computer systems work, Jackson gets to sample prototype gadgets from time to time. After declaring the forearm-mounted dongle and self-regenerating bioplastic earplugs a financial dead-end, Jackson fell in love with a highly advanced prototype wrist Omni. His first question, upon hearing about this so-called prototype, was how another Omni could possibly be considered a prototype when they were already a massive part of the technology market. He was then shown the prototype, negating his question.

It was a step — no, a rocket powered leap — away from what people would expect to see in an Omni. The prototype was a translucent green sheet of carbon film 10cm wide and 20cm long, with a 2cm thick black rectangle that stretched across the upper edge. This little strip of hardware contained the most highly compressed incarnation of Omni technology, plus some extra Zodiac-exclusive features. The carbon film, however, was where the magic happened. The paper-thin rectangle of what looked like ordinary, green-tinged plastic was a fully flexible, versatile, touch sensitive screen. The black strip projected the visual output through the film and detected points where it was being pressed, regardless of what shape it happened to be in. Best of all, the screen could be wrapped around the user's wrist and its bottom end would clip into the other side of the black strip, and it would retain its functionality. The screen could be rolled tight or even folded without creasing. And with a sturdy, waterproof design, well it's easy to say why the Omni hasn't left Jackson's sight since he got it.

The Omni was also given a very specific feature that, for some reason, went into the Schizo units instead of human-operated systems where it belonged: the Omni has the ability to access effectively any computer system and make available to the user any function the system has access to. There was a very specific reason for giving Jackson a tool like this.

Oh, Potatrobot, I love this new character! Thank you for sharing him with us! As head of Zodiac IT, your character already has access to Zodiac systems on board - including the restricted ones.

But something I want to make sure you understand is that none of the Scorpio's critical Command and Control systems are accessible by the Public Omni Network. Those either have their own isolated networks that are accessible only at designated stations (Environmental and Damage Control), or they have dedicated connections (flight control, navigation). If the Captain wants to change course, he passes that order to someone actually on the Bridge to have them do it. Even you, as Chief of IT, would have to visit one of the designated Helm stations to change course.

As for the secure networks, that's absolutely fine. Zodiac wouldn't produce something that could sabotage its own cruise liners, so the "access-all" function that Schizo and the Omni have is definitely locked out of the critical command systems. Didn't say anythin' 'bout non-Zodiac ships, though >_>

I've added it. This may actually help the story line a bit, as ships usually operate under the rules and regulations of their planet of registry. Up until now, the line was registered under Earth, so complied with Earth laws. Being registered under Australis now means Earth has no direct jurisdiction.

Good post Tyler, but I have a couple of questions:

Having to crawl backwards until he got to an intersection so he could turn around Gabriel painstakingly pushed his massive frame through the vent systems with surprising stealth until he was directly over his target - - the Wanderer's rooms.

I hope you'll forgive me (I've always had a certain dislike for the "air vent passageway" trope) but it is physically impossible to be stealthy when crawling around in a vent. If the dust doesn't make you sneeze then the loud scraping of metal will give you away. And that's if the vent is big enough to fit into in the first place (most aren't designed to be big enough for humans, especially ones as big as Gabriel), and doesn't have a number of grates / fans between you and your destination.

Conversations were going on below and he listened intently, storing them away for future use and getting his first glimpse of the wanderer... or second it would seem.

The girl from the shop? Curious.

I may have dropped the ball here, but I'm pretty sure the girl Enigma described at the shop wasn't supposed to be Butterfly?

Gabriel walked only inches away from them yet none seemed to notice the massive man. By the time one of them checked behind them Gabriel was gone like a ghost, back up an access hatch and out onto the roof.

How exactly did he pull that one off?

Potatrobot
02-28-2013, 10:39 AM
I agree with those questions about the post. The air vents I'd imagine are only large enough for a hare to fit through, since such a quiet, still place won't be in need of massive currents of air and likewise vents.

And I'm positive that the girl in the shop is a different person altogether. From what I've gathered, she was in a forgotten stasis chamber on one of the downed Red/Blue faction ships, while Butterfly teleported onto the Scorpio from Zaya a long time ago. If it's just Gabriel's misconception, then I understand perfectly.

As for that last point, my question isn't so much as how but why. Why follow people so closely when you're not going where they're going? Sure, maybe we smell nice, or our clothes are made of mysterious fabrics and you want to get a closer look, but I don't think Gabriel is one to appreciate the smell of cologne or the intricate weave of a suit.

Vents are indeed hard to be stealthy in, and in your mind they may be the size of the hare but no specific rule was ever set down pointing out the size of a vent. Therefore I have no choice but to believe it is up to me to decide the size of the vents. And I believe that such a large place would have slightly larger vents than the ones you seem to be used to. Closer to Gabriel sized vents but not quite big enough for him to be comfortable. And the trick to being quiet on a vent, which I should have added in, is slow exaggerated movements. Moving on ones finger tips and the tips of their feet.

If you cannot accept that explanation then I am sorry friend to have disturbed your dislike for air vents. Maybe I could submit something in to myth busters about it to see if there is actually a way to climb stealthily in a ventilation shaft. And yet there MIGHT be fans, but there might not be as well. That's merely a matter of chance and I didn't exactly feel that writing about unscrewing or jamming fans and the like would be a worthwhile thing to put into a post, because it would basically be just repeating what I had already said about getting into the vents.

And just for further clarification he went backwards into the vent until he came upon an intersection in which he could angle himself into one end so he could go forward.

And as for the girl, It was my understanding that the Wanderer was in the shop, which was why the Merchant was so nervous. If I am wrong I would like Enigma to let me know so I can strike that part from the post. But to what I read and understood they are the same person.

For the last question, the how and why, its quite simple really, though I often forget others aren't going to be thinking like I do and so they might get confused as to intent.

How? Just because a man weighs so much doesn't mean that he can't move quieter than a mouse. They can, and for a trained killer like Gabriel moving stealthy is something he can do with ease. Of course, he can also be a loud as hell obnoxious bastard to draw attention as well.

And as for the why? Several reasons could go here. To get better looks at her troupe of friends? To get a better feel and maybe catch some spinets of conversation?

No, just because he could and that was the fastest way out. They were going by the same access hatch he used to get into the building.

I hope this satisfies your questions, it would be sort of a pain to go through and edit everything to suite everyone's ticks/misunderstandings but I would do it if necessary I am not a perfect RPer and will admit that I can often go outside the lines of what is pragmatic. While I will not concede that Gabriel is capable of such stealth, I will admit that the vents would probably be too small, and if it was too much of a problem I could go change that.

And of course if I mixed up the two people. That would be a whoopsie.

The girl in the shop is human, not Zayan. Her only double is a stone statue standing next to the Digger in front of the monastery.

Black

Kay then what is her significance?

Potatrobot
03-01-2013, 07:20 AM
That will be revealed in due course, Tyler. If we knew why she's special now then we'd know vaguely where the RP is going. It's better if it's a mystery, both for surprises and so that we don't make big plans for our characters that we have to change if things go differently to how we expect them to.

Black
03-01-2013, 07:37 AM
Not what I was asking. Obviously if she has a statue to her then she has some significance that people would already know. You don't erect statues for random little girls.

She was the companion to the Digger who built the canal that let the Pax refugees survive until rescue arrived. It doesn't say what happened to her after he died (during the canal's construction) though whether this is an accidental omission or isn't known "in universe" either I'm not sure.

The characters themselves don't know this, but Junkai later found her in a stasis pod on one of the derelict ships in orbit around Beylix.

My guess so far is that she is a cat's paw for the Zayans much like Paris was - judging by Junkai's reference to the Bureau (of Other World Intelligence?) and the destruction of the Pax Confederation, which Vargas and the BOWI apparently had a hand in. That would also explain how she got on an abandoned ship - the Zayans teleported her (or made a clone of the dead original).

I'm working on an uber post for introducing Jackson. I've been trying to avoid incredibly, unnecessarily long posts, but since I can't shorten this I suppose it's necessary.

OK, post is up. Since there's nothing more to add to the situation in the Brotherhood Temple, and since Gabriel was indeed undetectable, there's nothing for Schizo to do other than walk.

Enigma
03-03-2013, 09:26 AM
I was hoping Oak would post, but he didn't.

The Digger is a sort of mystery, as they put up his statue over a decade before the first ships from Earth arrived. Junkai, the alien shopkeeper who spoke English to the ships when they arrived, claimed to have learned it from Digger.

Digger was a Wilder, a volunteer from an uncontacted world who agreed to come with the Pax in the interest of future contact. Other aliens, Wilders themselves, agreed it was voluntary.

Junkai found the human wilder girl in a stasis pod on board a blue faction warship, with no idea of what she was doing there, a few years before the humans arrived. She understood Trade, the local language spoken by all the races on Beylix, but not English. A scientist accompanying Junkai knew about her, but was kidnapped by Red Faction diehards before she could report in.

Junkai, with the girl's help, had to steal a critical drive component from the Shatner to get the scientist back. She got a statue for her part in the rescue, next to the Digger, and Junkai got shunned. She then caused another stir when she made it clear that she had no interest in going back to Earth, then hid herself away when the Shatner and the Nemoy demanded she be turned over.

This led to all sorts of stories - she was being mind-controlled or threatened, she was Junkai's love slave kept chained in his basement/bedroom/attic/ship, she was a Pax Agent (super spy), the refugees botched her care and she died from her injuries from the rescue, the Earth ships did bring her back where she disappeared into a secret government prison to prevent word getting out that the Earth Governments had been selling humans to aliens, that the girl was the Digger's daughter (and helped dig the canal), etc.

Since nobody's seen her for at least a century and she's still unchanged, a stasis pod seems likely.

I've been pondering that, but other than Schizo cheerfully admiring or taking note of what's going on around him, or just doing the Schizo thing, I don't think there's anything to post about. Jackson is due to arrive at the Scorpio a while after it leaves Beylix, so there might be a "meanwhile on a transit ship" story there, but nothing much for the main group.

No particular questions on Master Hand's plan, so Daniel would just keep an eye out for trouble until they're all on the private shuttle up, and then probably sit back for the journey and drink tea or something.

When they get to the Scorpio I'll have him set about intruder-proofing Butterfly's cabin.

Mugging a guy and then leaving him money...that's like breaking into someone's house and then redecorating. :P

A fun fact: someone who is rendered unconscious by choking and then released will wake up again almost immediately, so I hope Gabriel slipped the guy some tranquiliser once he was subdued.

Black
03-09-2013, 08:59 PM
Meh. He would probably lose his job on the cruise liner and Gabriel doesn't like to have a guilty conscience.

And you're right. Would you also like to point out that it only takes 5-15 seconds to choke a person out depending on nervousness/condition of body? And that a 1 minute choke would most likely actually lead to death due to a crushed throat/and-or lack of air to the brain and other medical junk?

Yes basically everyone wakes up within seconds of being choked out. Didn't matter. I didn't want to get all show with Gabriel bashing the poor guy on the head with a massive meaty fist. Hes already been stripped nekked and left in a corner damn it! lol.

Enigma

Inflating lifeboats on a space-ship? :D

Sorry, they have rigid lifepods.

The inflating lifepods are armored clam-shells that expand out, revealing a flexible orange fabric envelope between the two that is made up of several layers of Vectran. A special expanding foam is pumped between these layers, 'inflating' the lifepod, giving it a useful volume to hold people. It's air tight and gives better protection against micro-meteor impacts as well as cushioning and insulation for the people inside. Restraining straps are sewn into the liner.

All the essentials are attached to the clam-shell ends - air processor, batteries, transponder, short-ranged radio, food bars and water packs, etc.

Solid-fuel rockets propel the inflated pod away from the spaceship. Shuttle crews can collect and link the pods together to form a pod-train. These pod-trains are then towed to rescue ships.

Potatrobot, you are always full of surprises! Eachert's response though will have to wait until someone else replies. Hopefully that will give me the time to think up as great as that!

Jackson's hacking tools should make short work of any regular omni, definitely. Daniel's & Gabriel's however were probably issued by their respective agencies, so may have features not found in most - possibly even their own set of hacking tools and intrusion countermeasures that hack the hacker back (black ice). Let's hope whatever failsafe your agencies decided to put in isn't one that'll explode without warning.

I've got an idea for a new space opera style game I'm calling U.N. Spacy for now. It's anime and star trek inspired - power armor yes, giant mecha no. It'll have a military navy section, a space marine section, intelligence section, justice section, survey/exploration section and a colonization section. This may wind up in the Persistant World section, if there's interest.

If you're going to use the Crew Service Door, it's the first door on the centerline side of the passageway just past the elevator bank. Inside you'll find the elevator shafts, including the hidden crew service freight elevator, spiral staircases that connect the passenger and service decks and the service corridor, used to move goods from the service elevator to whatever offices are served on that deck. The life deck midships service corridor connects with Sickbay.

Well shit, maybe I shouldn't have described the deck, either.

Enigma
05-04-2013, 07:36 PM
no, I quite like your description of the deck. *grabs*

Just remember there are three elevator banks, the forward, the mid-ship, and the aft. Each consists of four elevators for passengers, with access around the corners for the internal spiraling stairs and a hidden freight elevator.

The aft and forward elevator banks have on most decks an internal crew-only passageway that allows food prepped on the lower decks to be delivered up to the Constellation and the Universal dining rooms on the third deck, although the Constellation Dining Room does have its own kitchen to allow preparation of more exotic fare, with most of the prep work happening below. So if you order a hamburger in the Constellation Dining Room, it will be prepared below decks and brought up still hot. If you order the Octopus Miso Ceviche, the octopus is prepared in the Constellation kitchen.

Also, remember that the forward elevator bank is the only one that goes all the way down to the Hanger Deck.

And good post Azazeal! I'm going to try to liven things up a bit in the dining room.

Sorry I didn't respond to this right away, the last few days have been unexpectedly challenging.

It's a big ship, staff may have been pulled from other locations for tonight. This is not to say Security will not be present, scanning for weapons and toxins. Still, one of the wait staff, Jasper, may be willing to 'vouch' for Gabriel - for a modest consideration, of course. Say 300? It'll help if he assumes you're a reporter, perhaps from one of the smaller zines?

There are spare white waiter jackets, ties and gloves in the service corridor in case of accidents, so changing is possible. But it'll get him into the kitchen wearing a jacket and tie, and out into the dining room as a floater with a tray. Remember to scowl at the guards if one of them takes a hors d'œuvre.

Tonight is more a buffet style service. We want people to mingle, to talk, although tables are available.

Name of your roleplay : Interstellar Cruise Ship Scorpio - Earthbound
When it was started : January 20, 2013
How many players you have : 3 (including me)
Type of Roleplay : Science fiction/Space Opera/Espionage
What level of skill required : Semi-literate. I like paragraphs.

Plot Summary : In our last adventure, a mysterious young woman was mind-wiped and banished from a hidden planet, teleported on board an interstellar cruise ship, the Scorpio of the Zodiac line, where she became the target of an assassin. She was rescued by a handful of the passengers - most notably Daniel, a spy from Londinium; Kes Castaro, notorious space pirate; and S.C.H.I.T.Z.O., a malfunctioning Personality robot.

Her rescuers manage to get the young woman "Butterfly" (her first word) to a Brotherhood of Man sanctuary on Beylix, an alien refugee colony/tourist trap. The Brotherhood of Man has declared her to be a Wanderer, a member of a mysterious race who are believed to have defeated an ancient evil, but at the cost of losing their memories.

Some however want her in the belief that she might yet hold onto some fragment of memory that will allow them to find her homeworld and it's many secrets; others for her healing tears - be it for need or for profit. The Wanderer has been summoned to Earth (with some veiled threats to the Brotherhood) to various representatives of the Human Colonies, who are understandably alarmed at one of these mysterious beings appearing on their doorstep, as it were.

The Zodiac Line has happily offered the Scorpio to bring the Wanderer back to Earth (and of course to milk this opportunity for all it's worth), and the Brotherhood has brought Daniel and S.C.H.I.T.Z.O. together to escort her there. But now unknown forces move with the Wanderer, reasons as yet unknown. And more the pity, because currently you too are a passenger on the Scorpio. Travel insurance is greatly recommended.

At the moment, I am leaning very heavily towards making a character from Londinium as all my ideas for characters from any of the other areas would only want to turn a wanted space pirate into the proper authorities and wouldn't want to get mixed up with whatever a spy is doing either, especially not a spy from another colony....

So in that case, it only makes sense to me that the Londinium SIS would have some intelligence records on its own citizens. Anything I put on the character sheet that is likely to be in such records, the spy character has my advanced permission to be able to use his spy connections to know and doesn't have to find out from my character telling anyone. I'll extend this permission to say that he can also PM me or post here to pump me for info/clarifications.

Unfortunately, our space pirate declined to return for this adventure. If you feel like playing one, please feel free.

Cruise ships like the Scorpio are used to connect worlds together, carrying heads of state, diplomats, company executives and couriers working for various branches of government and businesses. It's only natural that Londinium has at least one or two spies on board - if only to keep everyone else's spies honest, as well as their own.

I'll be bringing in a few more npcs to make things interesting.

Oh, that is quite unfortunate that he declined to return. I have a character in mind as I've been pondering it on and off while at work, going to write it up after I get home from work tomorrow [which will be a very short work day as it's only a 1/2 day due to holiday]... Character can very easily be tweaked to be an courier, possibly an executive... but not really a diplomat or pirate.

What can we say? You steal a precious artifact from some crazy cult, they send out a bounty hunter who retrieves the artifact and dumps you into a carbonite freezer. Then you get put into a niche in the wall with the other guys and a pair of lost third-graders as a warning while we once again demand another explanation from our security company as to how people are getting in and stealing this thing all the time? Makes you miss the simpler days with the spikes, the pit traps, the blades that slide out of the walls, the sand trap, and of course the giant boulder that would come rolling out if someone lifted the artifact off of the pedestal.

But no, everyone had to complain what a pain it was to get that giant boulder reset each time, the rising cost of oil, and those cigarette butts that kept showing up in the sand trap and how we keep losing novices trying to rake them out, so you lot voted for one of those fancy alarm systems. Ok, the lasers are pretty but they don't burn you when you touch them, they just ring all those bloody bells! At least the guy we moved into the first niche was nice enough to fill the bells with expanding insulation foam before setting off the alarms!

Oh, and don't get me started on that damned insurance adjuster. Every time that damned artifact gets stolen, our rates go up. Why do our rates have to go up? Usually we get it back in a few weeks. Ok, it took a year and a half for the bounty hunter to catch the pirate but it doesn't matter, the artifact's back and he's filling the second niche now, so surely our rates can be reduced, right? No? Gah, I swear one of these days I'm going to put the insurance adjuster in the carbonite freezer and then dump them into the novice's garderobe. Yes, I know they're not aware of anything while they're frozen but I'll feel better, just the same.

So, um, where were we again? Your character! That's right! Looking forward to seeing it!

Player Name: England

Character Name: Dr. Ethan Thorne

Deck/Cabin Assignment: TBD - Silver or Blue preferred. His employer may be paying for him being here, but they're not going to pay for Luxury. He'd make a stink if they tried to put him in the Economy section as there wouldn't be room for all his luggage.

Description: Ethan is an 31-year old cybernetically modified human of Earth American decent but speaks with that same exact accent as all other Londinians. He has a plain appearance with thin lips, a straight nose, brown hair and dark eyes. He always to look goofy if he tries to smile, which is fortunately rare. Typical attire involves a plain long sleeve shirt, corduroy pants, canvas loafers, and mostly looking like he just rolled out of bed. He is capable of looking presentable if the occasion requires it, such as when attending formal dining, but still never looks anything other than ordinary.

The bulk of his cybernic "enhancements" only serve as a life support system to keep him alive, provide no enhancements to any physical attribute and are concealed by artificial skin. He does, however, have a built in microcomputer [not in his skull, kktks] with data access ports concealed within the last joint on the fingers of his left hand. Ethan can access and use his internal computer directly thus does not require the use of these ports for anything other than transferring information in or out as there is no wireless functions, which is specifically to make him difficult to hack into. Hacking the doctor requires first subduing without killing him then using a data port to break through his computer's firewall and other anti-hacking software. He is no less vulnerable to physical attacks as any unmodified human would be as computers don't take well to being punched or shot at either.

Profession: Holographic Engineer & Research Specialist -- He is currently employed by the Royal Shakespearian University's Department of Robotics Engineering thus spends most of his time either working on advancing in the field of holographic robots, appealing for grants to fund his research or going to conferences with other experts.

Bio: Ethan grew up in Stratford-Bloomsbury located in Londinium's northern hemisphere and is everything that the city London on Earth is perceived to be complete with a dense population, cobblestone streets, and perpetually overcast skies, frequent rain and a chill fog that rolls in during the early hours of the evening.

His life has been largely uneventful to the extent of not worth mentioning except for a single incident involving a robot that was being designed as a potential replacement for humans in hostage negotiation situations that lacked certain safeguards. An error in it's AI program caused said robot to perceive its designer as a prisoner with his colleagues as captors thus went on a killing rampage through the robotics department. It was in the process of bludgeoning Ethan with his own arms, after having ripped them off his body, when it was found and neutralized.

More recently, his laboratory at the university was broken into thus prompting his employer to send him away for a while during the investigation by scheduling him to attend at a robotics conference on Earth. He only agreed to go because all of his computers, minus the one that had been hacked into, was sent along with him thus allowing him to continue his work with minimal disturbances. As a final note, he has been a frequent target of attack from both anti-robot and fundamental religious groups, both of which feel that his efforts to create artificial intelligence that would be governed by moral principles and not strict coding laws would only lead to robots gaining a greater self-awareness and having the same liberties and freedoms as living beings. He's also been the target of corporate espionage, both in regards to his own work and his own cybernetic life support system.

Dr Thorne doesn't seem to have done anything that would make the Security Service or the SIS decide to keep special tabs on him, and he's certainly not part of Daniel's mission, so I don't think you need worry about Daniel prying into his secrets. He'll probably have heard of Thorne of course, even if just from the news.

Derp. I had another paragraph that explained that but looks like I was careless when I copy & pasted but it pretty much was that his lab was broken into and it was decided that he should just disappear while things were being looked into... brought his research with him that consists of a self-willed artificial intelligence the existence of which could potentially infuriate fanatical religious and/or anti-robot groups that fear it could lead towards greater societal rights for robots and other artificial beings... Thorne himself is probably an interesting specimen depending on how unscrupulous someone is in terms of if they would try to vivisect him or not... His employer figured [wrongly] that he'd just stay put in his cabin the entire time and never leave it.

@ Azazeal849 -- That was just my way of saying that if your character has a plausable reason for feeling that he should know more things about my character than he could from a casual conversation and uses his spy network to gain information, I'm not going to have a hissy fit over it.

Part of my job as GameMaster is supporting the players' characters, so sometimes I ask nosy questions. Your character was fine, I just needed to know the reason he was on board. Vacation? Perfect! Making the rounds of universities on the Guest Lecturer circuit while the Scorpio is in port for a few days? Great! Your employer doesn't want you around for a year so you don't have to answer any embarrassing questions as to why your lab exploded one night, burning down the building while you were found on the grounds outside the lab, drunk and naked with a Dean's wife, two equally under-dressed undergraduates, a donkey and an almost empty gin bottle? That's practically a specialty of the Zodiac Line! (And makes for some very interesting conversations!)

And our assassin from the last game was the son of the Terran Ambassador. I'm not too worried as to why an American has spent most of his life on Londinium. And as a robotics specialist, I'm sure there's a file someplace. Probably resources.

If there's a problem with your character, I will be the first one to tell you. I promise.

And now I am so tempted to make a second character that needs to disappear for a year to avoid answering embarrassing questions as to why his office exploded one night, burning down the building while he was found on the grounds outside in the parking lot, drunk and naked with his boss's wife, two equally under-dressed interns, a donkey and several completely empty gin bottles.

You know.... I know for a fact that if it was up to this character that he'd just order room service and never leave his room if just permitted to have everything in his room with him, so I think that perhaps whoever is in charge of the ship should have been very insistent that all the fan noise, occasional computer beeps and whatever else would be disruptive to the other passengers thus should have been very insistent that they can provide more than adequate security for it elsewhere on the ship while still giving him access to it all.... because I made a character where the GM could have fun sending teams of NPCs to break into the computer lab to either bomb it or steal stuff, but that's no good if the character is there all the time guarding everything and refusing to leave like some annoying puzzle in an adventure computer game.

I didn't realise I was going to cause trouble with this!

England is working off a throwaway line that I put in my original CS ("by descent (Daniel) is probably American or Canadian, because surprisingly few actual Brits emigrated to Londinium") which was a tongue in cheek reference to the fact that Londinium is a relatively inaccurate stereotype of Britain built upon Hollywood films and romantic ideals - I figured that most people who grew up in the "real" Britain wouldn't be interested in moving to the theme park version where everyone has the same accent, dresses like its still the 1890s, and religiously has tea and crumpets every afternoon*.

* Fun fact - crumpets, if eaten at all, are usually a breakfast thing; scones with jam and cream are the traditional accompaniment to afternoon tea. And I don't even know anyone who eats them with any regularity (outside cafes at tourist attractions such as castles), although, yes, many of us do drink a hell of a lot of tea! :D

That may have been a throwaway line, but I was in total 100% agreement with it! Why would actual English people want to leave their country and move to some backwater colony that is just a bad stereotype.

I was so tempted to add my own throwaway lines to express my confidence that Londinium has robotic dragons, unicorns and fairies wandering about plus the people there eats those crappy fake scones they sell at Starbucks here in the US that really are just a muffin wedge, put cream [or even non-dairy coffee creamer] in their tea, and does a lot of other things that are just wrong... but I figured that you probably knew all that. =/

True fact - I may have a bad stereotype of England in my signature, but I'd rather have the real thing. <3

The staterooms really don't have the proper power rigged for running a full-fledged computer lab, plus there's a problem with cooling that could affect the rest of the deck, which is why I suggest setting one on the lower decks in a shipping container, rather than let them sit idle. Of course, that doesn't mean they couldn't do it, rigging a special shunt from the 'tween deck and adding a portable cooling rig.

Ship's Mall is on Deck 7 - and it has a Betty's Tea Shop! Please feel free to drop in - although it's touristy, it's got good tea and the desert trolley is to die for. Proper sutanna scones. Clotted Cream.Hot crossed buns for Easter. Lemon and Orange curd. A fine assortment of miniature cakes and biscuits. Even digestives and Hobnobs! Strawberries! Only the plumpest of the hydroponic strawberries in the Strawberry tart. *sigh*

Sandwich selection: smoked New Scottish salmon & cream cheese, roast NuYorkshire ham & mustard, roast chicken breast with tarragon mayonnaise, egg mayonnaise & cress, ploughman's pickle.

Betty's refuses to deliver, but baskets are available.

And no making fun of the St. George Theme Park! Or the Sir Nelson Water Park! (avoid the brandy - and yes, they did.)

Really in bad taste is the bioplas Guy Fawkes masks, but the tourists love them.

Oh, I'm not bashing either! Being an American of primarily British heritage, I find it very hilarious when people here get England so wrong that even I can tell they're getting it wrong... like there was this American chef on her own cooking show going on and on about how authentically British her scones were, but she made Starbucks-style muffin wedges. You're looking for a reporter. Who better to ask about a reporter than another reporter?

He was also initially suspected to be Harris Brown at one point by lawyers investigating the source of the story until Harris Brown surfaced for an interview. It's believed he gave Harris much of the material for his story, but agents who questioned him after your report found him "uncooperative".

And even though he's retired, Parker still has some pull in some circles. An interview by him might give Butterfly some much needed publicity rather than the tabloid fluff that's going out now.

Would that be the price-fixing story on Ariel? One of the two companies involved in that price-fixing scandal was also involved in the New Manchester Beanstalk disaster where faulty couplings failed, killing over a thousand passengers and staff - including Parker's sister and her family. When he began looking into it, Parker suddenly found himself being forcibly retired, with a multi-year ticket on the Zodiac line and anonymously black-listed. Little wonder why the company's lawyers would think he'd be involved so soon after being forced out - but Harris has proven equally adept at dodging process servers as well as intelligence agents so all the lawyers can do is fume in suspicion at Parker.

Parker's been drinking before Butterfly appeared, so not really in the frame of mind to do anything formal - nor was he expecting to do one, since his 'retirement'. Most of the news agencies don't have a senior person on board, just the usual crop of juniors doing trench work - and none of them were invited to the reception. If no one will suggest it to Parker, he'll get a call on his pocket omni with an offer.

I had a nice long reply 75% written yesterday and then I decided to do something really stupid like pause to go check my email without saving said reply first, so firefox decided to punish me by crashing and taking my entire computer down with it such that I had to forcebly power down to rest.... so once I'm done eating the bowl of soy vanilla ice cream with lemon curd on top I have here with me, I will start working on said reply again.

I'm still totally keeping close and reading all of this, just so you know.

Although a lot of the information about certain people you two (Azazeal & Enigma) are talking about makes me wonder if you're also passing PMs full of plot points to each other because I feel so lost when I read it.

No PMs of plot points, sorry!

Harris Brown, freelance reporter, burst on the scene after dropping a story on an editor's desk about a price-fixing scheme between two companies. Implicated by Paris as being his "boss" directing apparently random "hits" in the previous adventure, so now being sought out by Londinium Intelligence for questioning.

Harris Brown also came to see Butterfly with questions about what you were all doing at a secret Santosian base in our last adventure. A small-framed man, looks a bit like David Tennant.

Jason Parker, Londinium Times, Pulitzer Prize winner, lost his sister and family in an accident at the New Manchester orbital beanstalk when faulty couplings broke, dropping a loaded cargo container into the path of several passenger cars going up to orbit. Faulty couplings were sold to the New Manchester by one of the companies later exposed in Brown's Price Fixing story.

When Jason tried to look into it, he was suddenly "retired" on "compassionate grounds" due to his recent loss. Of course, the company who manages the New Manchester Beanstalk also has controlling interest in the Londinium Times. He's been riding various Zodiac line ships on a very generous decade ticket since the word is out that since the tragedy, he's lost his edge.

He's the rather large older man with the pot belly standing next to the Captain. Think Steven Frye.

Sort of. The ghost of one is hiding inside Schizo, hoping Butterfly's Aunt doesn't come looking for him again.

But as revealed in one of our posts, Harris Brown has the secret ability to change his appearance at will. So currently he's walking around NOT looking like David Tennant, which is one reason why Londinium can't find him.

Oh! My comment was entirely in regards to the NPC who looks like David Tennant.

True fact: England only started watching Doctor Who so that she can look at David Tennant more.

I think I'm going to make a post soon.

This development with Dr. Thorne is very interesting. With an expert on robotics and an IT support fellow with a digital skeleton key, the possibilities are incredible.
And since a whole load of Schizo units swapped out their bodies several months ago, there is probably a room somewhere on the Scorpio that's full of blank units (unless they were taken off the Scorpio at any time between now and five months ago). With the aforementioned experts, Eachert could be put in his own blank unit, a body entirely his own.

EDIT: Also, while this post is here, what sort of security measures did Daniel take when he assessed the Wanderer's cabin? And would there be any security cameras installed inside the cabin by Zodiac when the ship was built, or would that be an invasion of privacy and therefore null?

So far my post is very vague about what sort of security Daniel installed, and presumes that there aren't any security cameras installed in the cabin by Zodiac.

EDIT 2: So the post is now up. If the details regarding security around the Wanderer's cabin need to be changed, don't hesitate to say so.

On the side, is the black text hard to read? I use different colours to set Schizo's various identities apart without having to write short paragraphs explaining that he has changed at all, since that would be exhausting every time he changes. Hence, I use black for Eachert's dialogue, but if it's an eyesore for anyone, please let me know.

EDIT: Also, while this post is here, what sort of security measures did Daniel take when he assessed the Wanderer's cabin?

Here's the relevant text:

He dialled the bug jammer pen up to maximum and left it on the central work table next to a sheaf of Master Hand's notes and a paperweight stamped with the Zodiac Line logo. He fitted a laser tripwire to the inside of the cabin door, and secreted a thumbnail-sized camera on the wall outside, transmitting a video feed of the whole corridor to his omni. The camera's tiny internal chip was designed to scan for and highlight specific shapes, such as weapons, and even pulsed a metal detecting x-ray every time it sensed new movement within the corridor. He placed a chemical detector and a motion sensor inside both air circulation vents to guard against gas attack or remote drones being sent through the ducts, then replaced the louvred vent covers and made sure that all the screws were tight. He even attached water purity sensors to the insides of the taps and showerheads in the en-suite. Then, with the help of Schizo's internal sensors, he scoured the room for any snooping devices that the ship's crew had missed.

Awesome! Jackson's gonna get caught ^_^
I'm going to assume that, since Daniel's equipment is the product of a secret intelligence agency, it wouldn't likely be detected by Jackson's Omni. Same for the rest of his toys, too.

Azazeal849
06-25-2013, 10:31 AM
Well, he'll have been x-ray'd as soon as the camera detected him moving, but since he isn't carrying a weapon it won't have pinged an alarm through to Daniel. As such he won't be found out until Daniel reviews the footage later, and since he wasn't doing anything more suspicious than listening at the door and fiddling with his omni Daniel isn't likely to try and hunt him down (he may have just been a nosy paparazzi guy). So Daniel might adjust the camera to pick up Jackson's face and ping him if he comes by a second time, but that's about it.

Also LOL at Daniel trying to be subtle, and then Schizo just turns round and shouts "Hey look, a Botah!" :D

Sorry, it's been a busy few days for me and I'm trying to catch up with my RPs one by one...

Before I post I do have a question - what was the "public" story (if any) about the sister planet and Butterfly's time there? I'm wondering if Daniel could get Brown to come to them with an offer of information (or implying to Parker that they might have some).

Enigma

Before your arrival, the official Santosian story was that Botahat was cleared to protect the pre-sentient Botah from the Santosian settlers. No mention whatsoever about Eachert's lab or the camp set up around it.

Harris filed a story showing Butterfly and the rest of the group arriving under armed guard hours after her very public arrival on Santos, some shots of the above ground lab the Santosians had inside the barn and everyone entering the cave. Then a shot of the "cave" sealing itself and the camp partially collapsing after Eachert's lab ate itself.

In the aftermath, seeing the Botah, now reawaken, coming out of the woods demanding answers. There's a particularly good video of the Envoy herself confronting Harris while he was recording, although you don't see him, just hear his voice.

Later, a Santosian official countering a reporter's claims that it was a secret Santosian weapons lab admitted it was a Zayan facility of unknown purpose being studied by the People's Union and that Butterfly was brought there after Public Officials had discovered her connection. Denials were immediately issued, but it was too late. The official has since been reassigned to an arctic training station as its new weather officer. Demands and demonstrations outside of Santosian Embassies demanding full disclosure of what was found, but Santosians have stated everything was at the camp for security purposes and was lost in the destruction.

Harris has not reported how you all left the planet, there have been demands refused by the Brotherhood for the story of her harrowing escape from the destruction. Most seem to assume you all escaped using Paris' ship. It's a safe bet that government officials on Earth know you didn't.

Thanks! It was too hot and muggy for me - I'm going to insist on an air-conditioned field next time! All the big shells fired and only one cake needed to be relit after the show had ended. We had to recover a few small shells that hadn't fired - all but one had been lit but went out before reaching the lift charges - bad fuses. We'll reuse them in something else.

If you're firing a show, you don't get to see much of it, sadly. Still, the crowd cheered a lot and the firemen said it was a great show.

It's supposed to be over 100F [37.78C] here today so once I get home, I will find a nice spot where the air conditioning can hit me along with a few extra fans because me and temperatures on those levels don't mix. Nah, schizophrenic weather is par for the course in the UK.

I wonder if Parker will take Daniel's bait and go invite Harris Brown for an interview.

Also kind of wondering what to have Daniel do next - he can't really make a credible excuse for it to be his business to go down and see the broken-into locker (even if he's "helping a fellow Londinian" or "worried about his own luggage"). I suppose he could plant a bug on someone who is going perhaps.

A friend was telling me he was happy for his tower fan. I suggested he find some silica gel and have it sewn inside a tube of fabric to make a cooling neck band that you just need to soak in cold water before going out. Drips a little but you don't mind too much.

You could have Master Hand and the monks take Butterfly back to the room while you and the others go take a look. Anything unusual could be an attempt at distraction or a potential threat. Why is someone trying to break into one of the below deck containers in the cargo hold?

And you can always pass it off as transition-jitters, as the ship's already moved out of orbit and is making a run for the edge of the system gravity shallows where it can turn on the intraspace drive.

Hmmm. Shall I make this... interesting?

Player Name:Wintersend
Character Name: Helena
Deck/Cabin Assignment: Deck Two; Gold Star
Description: Helena is a young age of 22, however due to her young age, she has had much more experience with staying active and keeping fit. Her muscles are well toned and she has a well-fitting body, due to the large amounts of training she does on her home world. Her hair is a shining abysmal black, precisely braided from the base of her skull to her lower back. She keeps it most often in a braid, but it is not uncommon for her to let it lay straight down. Her eyes are a startling silver color, and she speaks with a slight accent from her home-world. She stands at the average 5ft 5in tall, and carries on her at all times two Greek Kopis' (http://images.wikia.com/deadliestwarrior/images/a/a8/044-1-.jpg) upon her back in sheaths made to fit them.
http://static5.depositphotos.com/1035524/525/i/950/depositphotos_5254702-Portrait-of-young-woman-in-greek-inspired-white-dress-smiling.jpgThis is just to show what she would dress in and her general body figure. THe above is her 'actual' appearance.

Profession:Trader

Bio: Helena was born and raised on Athens. While it was not popular among her family, she immediately, when able, trained in the use of swords and bows. While many women of her society chose very different paths from her, she chose the more masculine path. She showed exceptional prowess with the sword, and therefore was able to continue in her training. After her training, she became a trader, investing in other world technologies and effectively becoming a "black market" dealer of sorts. That all changed when she heard of the one called "The Wanderer".

She wanted to see this child for herself, not believing the rumors that spread across the worlds like wildfire. So, she did what she did best, and traded her way onto the Scorpio in hopes of seeing the young child, and confirming her suspicions. Plus, she could restock on other world technologies while on this venture.

Wintersend! Welcome aboard! I've put you in Gold Star Room 229 - that's Second Deck, room 229. Your assigned steward is Ronnie, who looks like Arthur Darvill (he played Rory from Dr. Who). As a side note, he's a ship's brat - basically has lived aboard ship most of his young life, so knows all the nooks and crannies.

Your character has been added to the list of approved characters and you are free to start posting. As a Gold Star passenger, you have an invitation to tonight's reception with The Wanderer - however, Security will ask you to check your blades at the Constellation Dining Room door. Several Bass Stunners have been positioned here as a precaution, fair warning.
