RPA Mafia, Version 1.0- Game over, Mafia Wins!

Welcome to RPA Mafia! This game will be hosted by myself [Juni_Bear], and my co-host [SQJPure]. This game contains a number of elements and players to keep it alive, and is rather...different than any other game on RPA. There are two main phases within this game, the 'Day' phase, and the 'Night' phase. The 'Day' phase is where the outspoken action happens, where the clues are left behind: this is for discussion purposes and voting. The ultimate goal of the day phase is to make a lynch, and be it the correct one.

The 'Night' phase belongs to the power roles, such as the mobsters. They decide which townies pose as a greater threat to them, and whom to kill. It is their responsibility to PM either myself, or SQJPure their final decisions. Each phase will last for up to [THREE] real-time days. Sign-ups for this game will last for two weeks, until 8:23PM USA Central time on Monday, May 6th, OR until we have enough players, at which point myself and Pure will be sending out role PMs to the players.

Please read the following rules, as it will help explain the game more in-depth. It is the ultimate goal of the mafia to win, and it is the ultimate goal of the townies to win...depending upon who's side you're on. The number of mafias depends upon the number of players we have in general, and in order for them to win, they must consume at least HALF of the population of players. In order for the town to win, they must kill off all of the mafia before it's too late. This is done through discussion and analyzing player posts, as well as strategy.

Rules:

1. Please, this is perhaps the most important rule of mafia games, no flame wars. This game can become rather competitive and you will be auto-lynched by the GM, myself, if it cannot be controlled.

2. The second most important rule in this game- you may NOT edit your posts. For this reason, Merry Gentry has so kindly agreed to allow double posting IN THIS GAME so long as it does not get out of hand. Again, if it does you will be auto-lynched.

3. Another important rule of mafia is this- you may NOT discuss details of this game with ANYONE outside of this thread. No plotting, no discussing any details about it. Naturally we cannot tell who is guilty of this and who is not, but if you are reported you will be auto-lynched. The only exception to this rule is the mafiosos whom are allowed to PM/ IM each other during the NIGHT PHASE ONLY and must remain silent during the day phases.

4. No role-claiming. That is, please do not post anything sent to you via PM from the GM in the thread itself/ to others. If you really, really have an inkling to post a role- be it a fake one, and with my permission. HOWEVER, in doing this, you will usually end up with a target on your back no matter what role you should claim. If you feel as though you are about to be lynched, you may claim, but only towards the end of the day cycle!

5. No posting in the ‘IC’ thread after you’ve been killed/ lynched, that is what this thread is for along with recruitment.

6. All forum rules apply to this game as well, with the exceptions that Merry has so kindly given us.

7. Please try to be active, it is unfair to the other players if someone is not posting and they will likely policy lynch you so they don’t have to worry about it. If you are inactive for more than two straight day phases, I will auto-kill you in the night.

8. Other rules may be added as the need arises.


1. 10 players minimum required to start the game, though there is an unlimited number of players.

2. There are no double-lynches.

3. The game will be separated into two phases- Day phase, in which everyone will discuss a player to lynch and why- and the night phase, in which those with action roles will send their action to the GM.

4. When voting who to lynch, use this format: Vote: Juni_Bear; likewise, if you wish to change your vote: Unvote: Juni_Bear, Vote: ? in bold so that I can see them. Votes WILL NOT be counted if they are not bolded.
I know this seems like a lot of rules, but believe me- these are only in place to allow a better gaming experience, since this is such a special game. Below is a description of the BASIC roles that will be used in this game, though it will likely expand depending upon the level of interest


Townie- The townie has no abilities or powers. The ultimate goal of the ‘townie’ is to stay alive and not get killed during the night, or lynched during the day. The townie may voice his/her opinion on whom they believe to be mafia, and, place votes on who to lynch. The townie is not allowed to discuss the game with anyone outside of the thread.

Mafia- YOU are the mafia. You have the ability to investigate players, kill players, or stop the potential actions of players. You are the only ones allowed to discuss the game via PM/IM during the NIGHT PHASE ONLY. You may not reveal your role in-thread, and you may not reveal the roles of your fellow mobsters. You are allowed to partake in the daytime discussions and cast your vote towards a lynch.

Etc. roles, depending upon the level of interest/ my creativity.

The GM’s word is law! I will be using this format to single out my posts. Please do not use this format in the game, thank you!

This is a SPECIAL version of RPA mafia, as I have spoken with two staff members and have been granted permission to create roles based off of their personalities, though I will not say whom exactly...it will have to be a MYSTERY!

And on a final note, due to the special circumstances of this game, I have been given permission to create TWO threads for this game. This is for sign-ups/ general discussion/ game updates, and once enough attention has been created, I will post the actual playing thread and roles will be PMed to the participants. It's the same thing, Juni. Just you have werewolves eating people during the night instead of mafia throwing them into the river with cement blocks tied to their legs.

You'd have like a shaman that can save someone from a bite and a seer that can divine a different person each night to see if they're a wolf. As opposed to a doctor and an investigator respectively.

Werewolf in a nutshell: Basically you have townies and were wolves. The job of the townies to figure out who the werewolves are while the werewolves get to eat someone at the end of each posting phase. The townies vote on who they think the werewolves are. The one with most votes gets excited. The game is over when there are only one townie or no werewolves left. There are also special roles like an investigator who can ask the GM one question per phase. The question is usually, "is person X a werewolf?" They are not allowed to share the information they get with the other players.

Incidentally, why is this in Downtown and not the Chat RP section?

Because this is a game? I told Merry it was going in dtown and she cleared it XD it isn't an RP, it is an actual game...it's just really different than the normal game.

Also...it's basically the same thing, except the mafias only kill at night and power roles are only used at night. Townies vote in the day and mafia wins when they consume more than half the population. Town wins when there are no more threats.

It's a bit of both really! The day phase is more RP orientated (describe your characters, put forward your case, vote to lynch), whilst the night phase is when all the gaming happens.

I will be sending out role PMs shortly, and I will 'drop the hammer' so to speak and start the in-game thread, which will be titled: The Mafia Trials of RPA. (open to suggestions) at some point this evening...sign ups will be available until then, and after that further entry into this game will be denied. So please... If you know of anyone who might want to join, they only have a few more hours to do so.

I would like everyone to familiarize themselves with the rules. There will be NO editing of posts whatsoever (I WILL FIND OUT!) and therefore Merry has so kindly granted us permission to double post- so long as it does not get out of hand.

Also, do NOT reveal your roles to anyone or so much as fake claim...unless you are about to be lynched and feel it is necessary for survival. If I see anything quoted from PMs sent by either myself or Pure, you will be auto-lynched. Voting is done in the day phase in the actual thread. For example, I vote for Natora, though voting in the first turn is generally a bad idea, the odds of killing another townie are to high. (Obviously that vote doesn't count.)

I would like to make an adjustment, night phase will last until the previous date given, Saturday, May 4th, OR until I have received all night actions. Once all night actions have been turned in, I see no reason to keep the game in the night phase...however, you have UNTIL that date to give me those actions.

While voting on the first day is generally a bad idea, I do think that your odds are pretty good. It's a 50% chance that you'll get a mobster, while after the first night ends and a townie is killed it only goes up to a 53% chance you'll get a Mobster. That first day, with no voting, almost feels like a waste.

I realised this about half an hour after I posted it, since I was originally stuck on the train of though that there were 7 Mobsters and 7 Townies, so my maths is all wrong. XD

Still, either way, your odds of picking out a Mobster don't increase exponentially until there are approximately... 8-10 people remaining.

It would never be a 50-50 game, as I said earlier the game is a informed minority vs an uniformed majority. At best I would assume something around 60-40, with 60% of the players being the townies and 40% being the mafia.

I agree with Jarms, finding a mobster will be hard. So the 60/40 is a high number, and very well could be lower then that.

D'aw...It's up to you really, I hadn't intended for this to be an RP, as I'd explained before, but the players seem to be more RP-oriented as well as game oriented. My only concern with that is that about half of this game is RP oriented, and some players aren't RPing full-time.

I second the decision that this should be moved to the Chat RP section. I think what makes a game a GAME is that anyone can participate without signups and it's ... a game. This is definitely an RP, even if it's in a different style, as there are signups and each participant has their own specific role...

Do you mean what would change in the RP if it was moved to Chat RP? Nothing significant. It just means including a line of in-character text would be REQUIRED, not optional, but y'all are doing that anyway so.... there wouldn't be a difference, it would just be in the right section.

Also, Jarms mentioned something about "There being no actual clues". Since I'm used to Werewolf games, this kind of stumped me. I was always pretty sure that clues were half the game, since just going off of people's reactions could mean that if someone was really good at hiding their intentions, you could never guess what they really were. Most everyone knows enough about each other's personalities and quirks to be able to guess how they'd kill someone... otherwise, everyone might as well just die from heart attacks and not have creative deaths.

Just my two cents, really.

I am giving no help to the townies, they must decide upon themselves whom is acting 'out of character...whom they feel is the mafia based off of who is the most suspicious. There are no clues, just try to use decent language and don't get frustrated with each other. Remember the ultimate rule in this game... No flame wars unless you want Naz to fire me and me close this thread before he has the chance XD!

....We are trying to find "evidence" more for the fun of it then thinking it will help, like I found a rock. They are everywhere, river rocks you can buy at some stores. The weapon that was found on day two, had been "contaminated" by Natora who was holding it. Again, it is simply more fun to pretend that there is something there.... But that is just my option, others may not agree.

That is a valid opinion, but it does not lead to whom the killer[s] are. It merely takes up time that should be spent discussing who is the mafia and who is innocent. Just some of the rare advice that I will give... Whilst I'm not biased one side or other, I want the townies to stand a -chance- at this game rather than waste time over what isn't there and look instead at what is.

Like I said, this confuses me. I must just be used to more intricate Werewolf games, because this is the first time I've seen a game of this type where there aren't actually any logical clues. For example, in one of the first Werewolf games I stalked, the way a person had been carried from their death spot to a new spot was in itself, a clue, as the person who was guilty had used a "fireman's hold" which someone had witnessed and testified on the new day. Ironically, one of the people who had a fleshed out background (Which we don't, but we'd be going off of what we know in general about each other) was, in fact, a fireman.

That's what I'm talking about. Going straight off of how people react in real time... doesn't feel right, it doesn't really make sense to me. I'll be more prepared for next time, but honestly, a lack of 'clues' feels like a wasted opportunity.

I've been telling you that this entire game, there is no hints, it's a game of suspicion. Clearly nobody listens to me, an informed minority verses an uninformed majority. I've said that time and time again.

I completely and totally see the confusion here, and that is okay... because this is meant to be a hard game based off of strategy. The mobsters have to decide who to kill based off of who is the greatest threat, who speaks out more and who is closer to figuring out who is really mafia and who isn't.

Townies don't have it so easy- I can't be putting out clues to you guys as to who is mafia and who isn't, because that isn't fair to them. Do I put out clues as to who the power roles are? No...because the mafia would figure them out too easily and would instead kill them off first, giving townies zero chance at winning. So why should I say 'the villagers of suni woke to a muffled cry on the other side of town, and upon the discovery of the body they found a piece of evidence...a bright, yellow thong that appeared to be the weapon. Apparently the mafia had blinded the poor sap with a thong,' and that would obviously point to Nazgul as the mafia (which, this is just an example... I'm not confirming/ denying it, just using it as an obvious example based off of knowing something about him).

Or, why should I say that there was a dead crow with a pelted- in beak lying next to the body? That would obviously imply Anne Bonny had commited the crime, due to her love of crows. Or that there was a trail of gold along the ground during the night, indicating that GoldenMyth had a special night power.

All of these are simply examples of what I'm assuming you all are asking me. I can't provide clues like this because it wouldn't be fair to those players. Games I have played is literally with nothing to go on, other than voting people off and seeing who lashes out at who, and who has motive to kill who...not clues.

Can you guys help me to understand the sort of clues you're looking for, and I might be able to work something out for this game, just so you guys can break the ice with this new version? :hugg:
