"Morgan! Grab Michael and follow me!" Jim yelled as gunfire rang throughout the neighborhood. Morgan ran out, two bags full of food, clothes, weapons, and whatever else she had packed bouncing as she hurried to Jim, Michael in her arms.
Michael was crying, unsure of what to do or think. All he could do was sit and watch all of his neighbors be devoured by these...these beasts as he and his family sprinted to safety.
Jim was shouting directions at Morgan, the bags against his body clanging together. He had seen the news reports. A virus, known as Virus X, had broken out in America, and was now spreading out to all neighborhoods and cities alike. Jim didn't know where he and his family was going, all they knew was that they had to get out of the city and into the countryside.
He searched for an abandoned car, his car was being worked on and Morgan's had broken down. He found the perfect truck: a beautiful, black 2010 Nissan Frontier was sitting in the middle of the street. He scanned the area and saw that no one was claiming the car, so he prayed that there were keys in there and told Morgan to get in.
He swung open the door and then slammed it shut, Morgan sliding in next to him in the passenger seat. Jim frantically searched the car for the keys, and found them in the glove compartment. He fumbled with them, trying to get them into the keyhole and finally starting the car.
He thrust the truck into drive and they veered through streets, seeing the horror that had broken out in the once-beautiful neighborhood. All of their friends were trying to defend themselves, but a majority of them failed and Jim, Morgan, and Michael watched in horror as the walking dead bit into the flesh and devoured them.
He tore his eyes away from the sight and was finally able to get out of the town. He was about to cut through the city, when Morgan brought something up, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Jim! I don't think we'll be able to get into the countryside through the city! We have to go another way!" Jim nodded in agreement and turned onto a nearly-abandoned alley. He followed the path down and out of the urban area.
After a few minutes of trying not to look at the monstrosities taking place outside, the scene went from houses and green grass to wide plains and wheat fields. He searched for a nearby farm house, and his prayers were answered. There, sitting in the middle of the area with a barbed wire fence encircling it, was a house. They pulled up into the dirt driveway, ready to ask if they could live there.
Morgan still held Michael, who was now sleeping, in her arms. Jim went up to the brown porch and rang the doorbell and waited for a few minutes. There was no reply, so he looked through the window next to the door. As he searched, there was no sign of any life. He looked to Morgan, who had fear glazing her eyes. Jim knocked once more, and waited again. When there was no sound to be heard, he found that the door was unlocked and opened the door cautiously.
He and Morgan entered wearily, keeping an eye out for any of the zombies. They searched the house from top to bottom, and there was no sign of anything living there. They let out a sigh and headed back down into the main living area, locking the door so that way nothing could get in.
They collapsed on the couch, taking deep breaths, trying to calm their heartbeats.
"Morgan," Jim breathed. Morgan turned to look at him. "I think we'll be safe here." She nodded her head, and fell asleep within moments. Jim decided to stay up and check the supplies in the house.
He raided the pantry and saw that it was filled with canned goods. To his relief, the power still seemed to be working. The AC was cranked up, the fridge had cold drinks and an assortment of food, and the lights could be turned on. Upon further examination, he learned that the house was powered by solar panels, so he figured that that would last for a while.
This is our new home, now.
