An unchanging night covers the sky, an endless white desert covers the ground. The tree-like objects are not plants, but rather quartz-like minerals. A great fortress resides within the empty plane. With the arrancar gone it is now itself virtually empty, its halls silent and its facilities in disrepair. At the centre is a great domed building surrounded by other large towers. The dome has another five smaller towers on its top.

The only remaining inhabitants are the Exequias who continue their vigil to hunt down and kill intruders. After five rounds a squad of them appears to attack the fighters indiscriminately. Once the final squad member has been killed the timer resets, another squad appearing in a further five rounds.

Gabrielle can: Fly and has super-sight.
Joel can: Jump to great heights.

Things were eerily quiet so high up. There was very little win and with the heavy blanket of darkness which encompassed all of Hueco Mundo, it was almost peaceful. To Gabrielle, anyway.

She was perched on one Las Noches' tallest towers, from which she could overlook everything in a huge area around her. Her keen eyes were narrowed as she searched for any sign of movement, any hint that she'd be challenged soon.

Oh, how she longed for some excitement - some danger!

From below a rhythmic thumping sound became noticeable to the archer, breaking the fragile silence of peace. It was the sound of great weight slamming down onto stone in tune to a beat. A grey monotonous beat of the musician with a spark who writes boredom on a page. Slowly, it grew louder as time passed, heralding the arrival of its maker. Then without warning it stopped and silence resumed, the conductor pausing before a crescendo.

In an explosion of stone and cacophonous noise the door door leading to the dome rooftop disintegrated. His bladed baton shot upwards and his voice followed its tune, a rage filled scream erupting from his lips. With a flourish of both blades he threw his head backwards and turned it into a roar that shook the ground around him. His mouth snapped shut and he stared into her eyes, his own red pits of hate and madness showing no hint of mercy. His red cloak billowed out behind him as a stray breeze passed through. "DIE!"

The banging, the thundering noise, the sounds of destruction ... It was music to Gabrielle's ears. Her face lit up and she turned towards it to see a monster of a man burst out through the door which led to her position. "Yes!" Her exclamation of pure joy was drowned out by his roar. "Yes, yes!"

She took two swift, great strides towards him and flapped her wings. With the rustling of feathers she took flight and flew forwards. She passed to within a few feet of him then swerved sharply to the right and far out over Las Noches, well away from him. She'd gotten a good look at him and was cackling with dark delight. He'd be a great challenge.

She pulled her bow from its place at her waist and kept it ready while she flew in circles around the tower, her eyes fixed on Joel. She wanted to see what he planned to do before she attacked.

Joel watched the harpy fly by him before returning to the safety of the tower's height. If he had had his chain out he might have been able to hit her as she did so, but with only his swords she was out of reach. Growling he decided he had to teach her that her wings were not the haven they promised. With slow steps he trudged towards the tower she flew around, eyes locked onto her form.

Then without warning he jumped straight up, his form curling into a spinning red ball. It hovered in the air for a second as he acquired his target, no way of the harpy knowing what that was. Then he shot forwards, not directly at her, but below, right into the tower 's side. He punched a hole straight through the tower in an explosion of stone, emerging from the other side with an evil grin on his face. With a groan the great structure cracked around its form and began to fall, toppling right towards the harpy thanks to Joel's timing. Smaller fragments heralded its path, tumbling by her though even the ones that may hit would do no damage.

As it fell Joel did not jump off it or begin to climb down. With his shortsword hand he gripped the broken edge of the hole he had made while balancing his feet on the lower edge.

With pieces of rock and dust raining down on her, Gabrielle had to perform some quick maneuvers to get away unscathed. Shielding her face with one hand, she turned in mid-air and saw the huge tower slowly crumble and begin to collapse. It seemed to happen slowly, but in reality it was speeding towards her - and Joel was riding it down like a surfer.

"Very good!" she called. More than two hundred years of practice and routine came into play as she ripped an arrow from its quiver on her back and and quickly fitted it to her bow. The falling tower was almost on her so she flew to the side, out from under its shadow, while she took aim at one of Joel's sword-bearing hands.

Before she was fully free and in safe, clear air, she let the arrow fly but didn't have time to stick around and see if it hit.

Joel's response to the arrow was quick and brutal. With speed of arm at complete odds with his speed of motion his greatsword snapped upwards and smashed into the arrow. The shaft snapped immediately, reducing the head's momentum to a tumble as it clipped the ragged blade. It rolled down the man's arm inflicting small, unnoticeable cuts on his flesh in a random pattern.

However as the harpy flew away Joel simply watched her go, unable to strike without dooming himself to a great fall. Instead he waited until the tower was close to the ground and sheathed both his blades. Gripping a fractured piece of tower with his hands he pulled a large chunk free and jumped off the tower. He then jumped, clutching the stone above his head, and launched it at his foe with all his might, before curling his body up to roll when he hit the ground.

Gabrielle was very happy that she kept an eye on the Joel and the falling tower over her shoulder while she flew to safety. If she hadn't she might have missed the oncoming piece of debris. As it was, she didn't dodge quite soon enough.

She twirled in the air so the rock missed her vulnerable wings and it ended up grazing her right shoulder and chin, scraping off the top layer of skin.

"C'est des conneries," she muttered and glared over at Joel. He wasn't supposed to be able to reach her, yet the apparently mindless bastard had managed it anyway. She would need to be much more careful. He'd also been able to deflect her arrow with relative ease - despite the fact that it was just a shot to test the waters, it was bad news.

She quickly landed on the top of one of the three remaining towers and got two arrows out of the quiver. One she gripped between her teeth and the other was nocked in the bow, ready to be fired as soon as Joel showed himself again.

Joel rolled as he landed, greatly reducing the impact of his fall. Nonetheless he felt his back armour crack as it hit the ground and jagged pain as those cracks pierced his skin from below. It was nothing to the warrior though, a mere annoyance he had forgotten about by the time he was standing again. He found himself behind the fallen tower, not able to see his foe. Growling he leaped upwards and pulled himself to the top of the tower with his strength, only to be knocked straight back down as an arrow slammed into his shoulder.

He looked at the large arrow sticking out of his shoulder with surprise, and then anger. He tore the projectile out in a spray of blood and tossed it to the ground before stamping on the shaft, breaking it. With his left hand he punched a new hole in the wall, scarping the skin off his knuckles, and wrenched a chunk of rock out. With his right he drew the massive greatsword. He leapt backwards so the harpy was in view and tossed the rock skywards, switched to a two handed grip on the sword ... and swung it like a baseball bat into the rock. The flat side of the blade collided with the rock, cracking a third of it off but sending the rest flying at the woman.

Gabrielle heard the hard crack of stone against metal mere moments before the piece of debris came flying towards her at an alarming speed. Her reflexes were excellent but it was sheer nerves and luck which allowed her to deflect it. The second arrow - which she'd been gripping in her teeth until the moment she fired the first one, at which time she readied it on the bow and drew the string back - was released and it shot straight at the flying rock. It hit it in a glancing blow but it was enough to break its course and deflect it away from her. She cut it close, though, and tiny, broken off pieces of it hit her in the face and torso.

"Merde," she muttered and wiped at her cheeks. She was growing angry now - she'd obviously underestimated her opponent.

At least her first arrow had injured him. It would take a while but she was sure she could eventually bring him down if she shot enough metal into the bastard.

So, she drew another arrow and took flight. While she flew she aimed at Joel's head and swooped down lower just as she fired.

Joel watched the harpy swoop in lower and grinned. Up close was where he could do his best work. Yet his grin lessened slightly when he realised she wasn't dropping that low, still fairly high up. Roaring he sheathed both his weapons and began to run, right at the fallen tower he had been climbing previously. With one leap he was on top, with a second he was six metres in the air. In one smooth movement during the run he pulled his chain from his waist.

His sudden jump through off the arrow's course. Instead of smashing through his forehead into the fragile meat behind it, it sliced down the rear of his skull, leaving a bloody scar like a zipper to his skull. His chain swungs upwards, his combined body and arm length allowing the two and a half metre weapon to reach the woman with a foot to spare. It appeared in front of one of her wings, hovering in the air just long enough that, if she didn't move, it would cut into the fragile limb and hook in.

Gabrielle twisted once more in the air and nearly dropped her bow in her haste to protect her most valuable assets - her wings - from the flung chain. She curled her body in on itself and tucked her wings in close. On one hand it saved her from getting caught in the chain, since she managed to avoid it completely that way. But on the other hand, she lost her altitude. She dropped almost as fast as a rock and only managed to flick out her wings again moments before she hit the ground, slowing her momentum somewhat.

The harsh meeting of her body with the rubble strewn ground was less than friendly, regardless. Her breath was knocked out and she had to take a moment to recover herself before she could take flight again.

It was then that the squad of six Exequias who had been watching the battle unfold made their presence known. Four - including their leader, Rudbornn Chelute (http://bleach.wikia.com/wiki/Exequias#Exequias) - drew their zanpakuto and leapt at Joel from behind, hoping to surprise him, while the remaining two rushed at Gabrielle. They perceived her to be the weaker of the two and vulnerable while grounded, so they weren't as careful.

They assumed wrong. Sitting prone on the ground as she was she dropped her bow and drew the slim sword from its sheath at her waist. She blocked the first thrust directed at her neck and simply dodged the other.

Joel crashed back to earth, cracking the stone beneath his feet, after his "successful" attack. Knowing he had down the harpy and she would now be easy pickings he turned to face her just as the Exequias attacked. Two of the blades sliced into his back but were deflected by his sub dermal armour, leaving only long cuts in his flesh. The other two attacks were blocked as he pulled a length of chain taught and held it up before them as if it was a shield.

In response Joel swung his chain in a semi circle collision course with all four before releasing it. Three of the Exequias held up their zanpakuto and blocked the chain causing it to drop to the ground. However the fourth, one of the closest, ducked under the attack and came up aiming to slash upwards into Joel's chest. Instead he found a large hand suddenly around his neck. It squeezed slightly and crushed the man's neck dooming him to a slow, suffocating death.

Without another second's thought Joel lifted and threw the Exequias towards the harpy and her two attackers.

Gabrielle

The two arrancar attacking Gabrielle were low-ranking and not all that bright. Even as she heard the clash going on behind her and saw out of the corner of her eye how easily Joel dealt with his attackers, she could hold off her share of the Exequias with relative ease using just her sword.

She blocked their thrusts and kept them at bay with her own slashes and feigned stabs until she was able to climb to her feet. And though she could match and even better them in skill, she didn't have the strength to continue as she was for long. And she couldn't simply take to the air - they'd cut her down before she could gain enough altitude.

Then she found salvation in the form of her very own enemy, Joel. As he threw his dead victim at her, she gave a vicious little grin, ducked to the side and slashed her sword across her two attackers, forcing them to keep their attention on her and not the body hurtling towards them.

It hit them both at the same time, right in the middles of their backs. They grunted and fell forward, temporarily stunned but not too badly injured.

Gabrielle, unscathed, used the time given to her by getting a running start and launching herself into the air. Once she felt she was high enough and well out of reach of Joel, she sheathed her sword and withdrew her bow.

While all the remaining Exequias would focus on him, she'd be busy firing arrow after arrow at him.

The two trapped Exequias quickly pushed off the corpse of their comrade and searched for the harpy. High in the air with no cover as she was they easily spotted her. However Gabrielle had underestimated the pair. Simultaneously they raised their hands and pointed at her, releasing streams of green energy towards her form as they yelled, "Cero!". After this one continued to shoot her while the second joined his comrades against Joel.

In the meantime Joel was having fun. His chain whipped between him and his opponents, slicing open any who dared draw near. Only the skull helmed one was able to get close and attack him directly, forcing him to back up. And then he saw his true opponent fly up into the air once again, now out of range, and he roared. Dropping the rear he clamped it under his foot before throwing it with all his might. Though two blades and an arrow cut into his chest, opening up more bleeding wounds but stopped by his armour, it pierced straight through one Exequias killing them instantly.

As he drew his own two blades he kicked the chain with his free, looping his toes under it and pushing upwards. The stabbed body swung around and knocked over the running Exequias as the second fired arrow hit him, this time on his upper left arm. It cracked his armour slightly and stuck in eliciting a roar of pain. Leaping forward he wrapped his arms around another Exequias before they could react and placed him between a third arrow and the skull faced one's stab.

Quickly he stabbed his shortsword into the newly made corpse and lifted it up as an improvised hammer. He swung away at his last attacker, the body's flailing limbs making for hard to dodge strikes. By pure luck one arm caught a fourth arrow just before it hit Joel. As the knocked down attack got up Joel thrust the shortsword at him before pulling it back. The body slid off and collided with the Exequias knocking him flat again.

As the leader backed off slightly Joel moved his head a fraction to the left just as a final fifth arrow flew by, the tip just grazing his earlobe and causing a trickle of blood to drip down his shoulder. Growling he leapt at skull face once more, his weapons swinging furiously and hoping to finish him off before the harpy fired again.

Gabrielle had little trouble dodging the Cero blasts. They were slow moving to her eyes and she was already high up, easily twisting and turning in the air to avoid the energy beams. It was even easier when one left to tackle Joel. She laughed as she flew around the battlefield in a wide circle, firing her arrows at him, amused that he was using the arrancar to block some of them. If nothing else, he put on a great show.

They kept him sufficiently busy, she decided, for her to try something different.

While the arrancar kept firing at her - and she made sure to stay out of the attacks' way - Gabrielle glided around until she was directly behind Joel. As he leapt at the leader of the Exequias she swooped in as close as she dared, (10 feet above his head) pulled the poison-coated dagger from its sheath on her leg and tossed it at his torso. At such close range she figured she couldn't miss, but was also placing herself in much greater danger.

The reward would be worth it, though, if she managed to give him even a tiny cut.

Joel fought the skull face with reckless abandon, his attention completely gone from the harpy as he tried to finish this other foe quickly. However they were more skilled than their minions and the man was holding him off, seemingly with ease. Then suddenly his stomach section went completely numb, as if his upper and lower body had become detached from each other. Looking down he saw a dagger had pierced him, slipping between the gaps in his sub dermal armour around his hip.

Growling in anger he dropped his shortsword and pulled the dagger free. In one motion he located the woman, spun and threw the dagger at her as she flew away. His aim wobbled as his upper half was unbalanced, however she was still close and could be hit, there may even be some poison still on it. Turning back to the skull faced being Joel realised his stomach was now a bloody mess. Unable to feel anything his foe had taken their time is carving flaps of skin away and revealing the blue-black armour below.

Gripping his greatsword in two hands the warrior rolled to the side and swept his blade upwards. It cleaved through the last remaining minion as they were getting up and flung the two halves at the leader. The man easily batted them away, but decided enough was enough and jumped backwards, disappearing over the lip of the building.

The harpy hissed sharply as the thrown dagger sliced through the skin and flesh of her lower calf. She felt the hot rush of blood spilling from the wound, then the poison on the blade kicked in and numbed her entire leg. She cursed and yelled and ranted in French.

The barbarian had managed to turn her own weapon against her. Now she had to remain in the air if she was ever going to stay safe from his rushing attacks.

Anger fueled her next attack: She made a sweeping turn in the air and dove down a little above Joel, keeping well out of his reach though. Then she opened her mouth and let loose a wild, deafening screech. As she did she prepared an arrow and let it fly - aimed at one of his eyes - using the distraction the screech would create.

DoughGuy

The screech took Joel completely by surprise, hands flying to his ears as he bent over in pain. He tried to move away to avoid the sound, but the ground was slick with his own and his enemy's blood and he was unbalanced on his feet. His foot gave way beneath him and he slipped, rather comically, onto his ass just as the harpy's arrow shot overhead. Growling Joel rolled onto his back and flexed his legs, lifting himself into the air.

But he wasn't simply pushing himself onto his feet. He didn't flip around and get back onto his feet, instead launching up into the air and curling into a ball. Blood sprayed off him in all directions as his body rapidly spun in his deathball attack. A second later he shot straight at the harpy, wherever she was. Except instead of shooting straight at her in his ball form, he opened up before he would collide, opening his arms and legs wide in an attempt to catch her.

The harpy saw Joel's plan take shape and smirked. The idiot thought she was slow enough to be caught by the likes of him? Pff, please. Her agility was her greatest asset and if he thou-

And then they collided. She'd been in the process of swooping to the left, out of his way, when he was on her quicker than expected. The impact caught her mostly along her right side, bruising some of her fragile bones and dislocating that shoulder. She hissed in pain, but even as they began to fall she was reaching for her sword.

It was difficult, but she was able to pull it free and with her limited range of movement, she thrust it up at Joel's neck. If she was going down, she was going to try and take him with her.

Joel attempted to wrap his arms around the woman as they fell. The force of his impact had effectively put him on top of the harpy as they fell. He pulled his head back and then thrust it forwards to headbutt her as they fell. However his attack added force to the harpy's blow. The blade which would had cut his neck stabbed deep into it instead. Unarmoured in such a flexible area the blade went right through and sliced out the back of his neck. As they fell his body suddenly went limp, turning into a dead weight on top of the woman, blood trailing them as they fell.

With Joel's blood streaming out over her Gabrielle could barely see. She struggled to loosen his limp grip and weakly flapped her wings to try and turn them over mid-air before they hit the ground with her on the receiving end of a giant , falling weight. While she did that she yanked at Joel's body with her good hand in an effort to get him below her so he could break some of the fall her own flapping wings didn't.

DoughGuy

Joel was a behemoth next to the harpy but his limpness played to her side. His body moved around slightly so that the pair would land on their sides, with most of his mass off her. But his left arm caught around her waist so she couldn't put him below her completely.

Then they hit the ground. Joel landed hard on his right side, the limp arm landing below his mass at an awkward angle and breaking his forearm in half. His large mass barely bounced as it hit the hard stone roof and wouldn't give the harpy any freedom to escape.

As the dust settled from the fall Joel's eyes snapped open one final time. The iconoclast's teeth gritted together and he painfully raised his left arm, then brought it straight down, aiming for the harpy's head with an open palm.

Regardless of how they landed and her efforts to lessen the impact of their fall with the flapping of her wings, Gabrielle's body was too fragile for such a fall. Most of her bones snapped with a sickening crunch when they hit the ground, including her spine. Death was immediate.

Joel's last hit only served to slam her skull into the ground and squish it further.

Joel's fingers played in the ruined mess that was his opponents head, grasping and clawing at the bone and meat fragments like a wild animal. His vicious grin was plastered on his face even as the massive blood loss finally overcame his powerful system. His fingers froze and his eyes glossed over without a sound to mark his passing.

Above the fighters Rudbornn Chelute watched on as they died to each other. His duty was done without his needing to interfere again. Without a sound he turned away and resumed his patrol.

Judging, yo

Well, since this was just for fun and both contestants died in the end, I suppose you can argue that this should be a tie. It's certainly hard to pick a winner, since you both were just fine in everything I read. Stayed within the rules and things of that sort.

However, I'm an American, and despise ties.

DoughGuy(Joel)

Pro's - I liked the character, and I appreciate that you had to fight against a character that was out of your range for the majority of the battle. Despite that, you found creative ways to attack without being too controlling.

Con's - Though I like the character, he doesn't really have much personality beyond murderous psychopath. Also, the level of injury he sustains is somewhat... less than impressive. A lot of grazes and things of that nature. Personally, I think it would've been cool if that arrow aimed for his eye had hit him in the eye and he fought on anyway, but that's just my opinion. I understand the sub-dermal armor thing, but it doesn't make for very exciting reading and that is what I'm judging on.

Arbitrary Scoring Grade: On a scale where 'pink elephants riding unicycles' is 1, and a 'mutant three-headed giraffe wearing a tutu' is a 5... I give you a solid 'orangutan acting out Shakespeare's Othello in period costuming'. Congratulations.

Bee Bear(Gabrielle)

Pro's - I enjoyed the character a lot, she has a lot of personality. I enjoyed when she would speak french, it gave everything a bit of flavor. Also, your injuries were very realistic and gradual over the course of the battle. It felt fluid.

Con's - Your attacks didn't vary overmuch throughout the battle, and relied heavily on flying and range. Though this is really the basis of your character, it does say in the rules to try not to rely too heavily on ranged attacks. You gave the opponent enough chances to inflict damage, and balanced this out with how frail your character is, but it does put more pressure on the opponent to think of creative ways of attacking you while you pepper them with arrows. A bit more close-range fighting would do well to balance this, though I'm not sure how you'd work that in.

Arbitrary Scoring Grade: On a scale where 'very surly dalmatians attempt to tap dance, poorly' is 1, and 'kittens sliding down a children's slide' is a 5... I give you an impressive 'Puppy trying to drink from a water fountain, and failing cutely'.

So, without further ado,

Congratulations to the winner, Rudbornn Chelute! Bravo! Well done! Amazing! Keep up the good work! Woooo!
