Anyone can apply logic abstractly. Ask if it is right to let one man die when it is the only way to save ten, and any logical person will tell you that yes, it is. But what do they say when that one man is standing right in front of them? What do they do when they hear his children plead for their father's life? What if this one man is someone they know - a friend, a brother, a lover? Suddenly the arithmetic doesn't look so simple.

Interrogator Alia Machairi dropped her quill back into its ink pot, and sat back in her chair to read what she had written. The vellum paper was illuminated by a pair of fluted lumoglobe lamps, standing either side of the desk that took up nearly a third of her cabin on the HDMS True Bane. The rest was taken up by a small shrine to the Emperor, a carefully made-up single bed, and a small but expensive wardrobe made of Spartax hardwood. Sitting on the desk alongside dataslates, vellum papers and a long-barreled melta pistol, a trio of candles seasoned the air with the scent of vanilla. The candles guttered slightly in the draft caused by the True Bane's air scrubbers.

A trill from the door buzzer made the interrogator look up from her work. Instead of using the control wand sitting in the desk drawer, Machairi got up and thumbed the manual unlocking rune to meet the visitor face to face. The mag-locks disengaged with a click, and the door pistoned open to reveal a petite woman with dark hair cut short around her face.

"McKenzie." interrogator Machairi smiled, "Keeping busy?"

"I'm always busy." McKenzie von Rousch quipped, smoothing the front of her red dress jacket. "But yes, lord Sidonis getting promoted to the upper echelons of the Ordo Calixis has hardly reduced the number of ops I need to organise."

Physically, lord Sidonis' chief logistician and his up-and-coming interrogator were complete opposites. The one was short and slender, while the other topped six feet even in flat-soled boots. McKenzie was delicate and boyish, while Machairi had shrewd dark eyes and a blade of a nose under long brown hair, which she habitually twisted into an elegant plait. In personality however, they were more alike. Even if McKenzie wasn't front line investigator material, Machairi admired her unflinching ability to get things done - and without the brute-force whip cracking that her fellow interrogator Schafer seemed to favour, as well.

"What can I help you with?" Machairi stood back and motioned for McKenzie to enter, but the other woman politely shook her head.

"I'm not stopping, thanks. I just thought you'd want to know that Sidonis will probably be contacting you shortly."

"What about?" Machairi asked carefully.

"He has a mission for you, and he's letting you pick the team."

Machairi raised an arched eyebrow. "What kind of mission? I've still not finished looking through the Baraspine case."

"Schafer's missed a report, which as I'm sure you know isn't like him. Sidonis thinks he might have run into some sort of trouble."

Machairi's face was studiously neutral. "Is he still out on that frontier world?"

"Hercynia, yes. The last we heard was that he and hs agents were leaving the Enclave to gather evidence from one of the more war-torn cities. But since then, nothing."

"Well, a war-zone isn't the best place for astropaths. Or maybe he's gone undercover?"

"Maybe," McKenzie admitted. "But Sidonis wants it checked out."

Machairi chewed the inside of her cheek thoughtfully. "Alright, give me a couple of hours to read up on the situation and I'll put together a team."

"Do you know who you'll be taking?"

The interrogator smiled. "I've got a few ideas."

"Let me know if you need any support with requisitioning anything."

"I will." Machairi nodded. "Thanks."

As McKenzie turned to leave, the smile dropped off Machairi's face like a mask. Great. she thought acidly. Save my hated rival. It was no secret among Sidonis' staff that she and Schafer got on like a house on fire - that was to say, with screaming, property damage, and people running for their lives. Machairi wondered for a moment if lord Sidonis himself was oblivious to the fact, or if this was one of his less-than-subtle manipulations to try and foster some common ground between them. She shook her head, and looked down again at the unfinished vellum paper on her desk, reading what she had written.

What if this one man is someone they know - a friend, a brother, a lover? Suddenly the arithmetic doesn't look so simple.

She picked up her quill, and added a final sentence before gathering the melta pistol from her desk and heading for the door.

That is why most men will never be inquisitors. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hrrZdOloeUY)

Hi everybody! This RP is a sequel to Warhammer 40K: The Replicants (www.role-player.net/forum/showthread.php?t=40923), but new players and characters are welcome as well as returning ones. Knowledge of the previous story is not mandatory; old characters will likely bring the new ones up to speed in-universe in the first few posts.

RULES

You all know the standard RPA rules so I won't repeat them here. There are however a couple of my own that I'd like to add:

Please write all IC posts in third person past tense. That is, "John stood up", never "John stands up" or "I stood up".
Please don't use quote boxes in the IC. If you're reproducing another player's text to help put your own post in context, please indicate the copied text with a different colour.
If possible, please leave a message in the OOC thread if you are going to be away for a while. Similarly, if you run out of time or inspiration and want to quit (which is fine), please have the courtesy to let us know that you're leaving so that other players aren't left waiting around for you.

RP BACKGROUND

It has been four months since the incident on Venatora, and although an inquisition frigate remains on station in the area, no further Necron activity has been reported in the system. Reconstruction efforts on Venatora continue, hampered by the loss of the competent and well-liked governor Faroven, but that is not the concern of the ordo xenos. While the vast staff of lord inquisitor Immanuel Sidonis continues its work across the Ixaniad and Calixis sectors, one of the inquisitor's senior acolytes - interrogator Javid Schafer - has uncovered anomalies in the tithe records of the nearby Hercynia system. With the most prominent ordo hereticus operatives in the subsector tied up, Schafer petitioned lord Sidonis to let him lead an investigation. He has been on Hercynia for the last two months, but has not reported in for some time.

Age: 41 Terran standard, 76 by the calendar of his homeworld of Spartax (which earns him the nickname "old man" behind his back)
Rank: Interrogator
Profile: Javid is a dynamic and task-focused man, and he aims to inspire these traits in his subordinates. Although sometimes impatient and blunt to the point of rudeness, he has a deserved reputation as a man who gets things done. He supervised the team of greenhorn agents who somehow managed to avert the xenos attack on Venatora, earning said agents a favourable recommendation from him to lord Sidonis before he embarked on his next mission to Hercynia. Hercynia, however, is currently classified as a warzone, and so he took a squad of more experienced agents with him for the mission.

With no explained reason for the break in communication, lord Sidonis fears that Schafer may have run into difficulty, and has tasked one of his other interrogators, Alia Machairi, with assembling a relief team. It doesn't matter to Sidonis that Machairi and Schafer are rather fierce rivals; when one manages a staff of thousands and is responsible for the fate of billions, it is easy to forget such nuances. And Sidonis has always been a man to consider individual agents mostly in terms of their skillsets rather than how well they will mesh as a group.

http://image.xyface.com/image/d/artist-daniela-amavia/daniela-amavia-310824.jpg
Age: 37 Terran standard
Rank: Interrogator
Profile: A competent investigator, Alia is a woman who values diplomacy both towards outsiders and within her own team. She invests personal time in agents that impress her, and so generally has a good working relationship with them. She is however first and foremost an interrogator of the inquisition, and so it can be difficult to tell if she genuinely cares for her subordinates, or simply sees the value of appearing that she does. Like Schafer she has a dominant personality, and so that the two of them would clash was almost inevitable. Still, she can hardly refuse an order from Sidonis to assist her rival interrogator. To help her locate and rescue Schafer, she has chosen a mixture of her agents and some of Schafer's own former henchmen to accompany her to Hercynia.

Your characters are inquisition agents assigned to the relief team. All characters not previously featured in Replicants will be members of Machairi's staff. They will have worked with her for some time and have a good rapport with her. Machairi selects her personal henchmen from the larger pool of Lord Sidonis' retinue, and said retinue is big and varied enough to contain almost any kind of agent or sanctioned psyker you can imagine (however, as Sidonis is a staunch puritan, he does not employ xenos and his staff contains relatively few abhumans). Sidonis also maintains a contingent of stormtroopers known as Task Force Carbon, which occasionally lends individual soldiers to investigative operations as security and the like. You may submit more than one character if desired.

As always, this is a guideline rather than something to be rigidly adhered to.

Name: Self explanatory.
Age: Ditto.
Position / rank: What their job is on Machairi's / lord Sidonis' staff.
Appearance: Pictures and / or descriptions are acceptable. I also strongly encourage you to describe the character in one of your early IC posts, as this will help establish the character in the other players' minds.
Personality: A few points is fine. This is mostly something for you (or me if your character becomes inactive and I need to NPC them a bit) to refer back to and help you stay in character while writing.
Weapons: If carried.
Other: Equipment, armour, psyker powers etc.
Background: Doesn't have to be extensive. However, anything covered here should probably get at least a passing mention IC.

"Its not that I don't believe in the Emperor. I just don't think he believes in me."

Name: Kally Sonder

Age: 33

Occupation: Psyker countermeasure/ frontline investigator

Personality: Kally is emotionally battered. Tortured, imprisoned, and having escaped near certain death more times than even she would care to admit, the fallout of the Pembroke incident still casts a long shadow over the soul of Kally. However, in more recent months, and after the Venatora incident, she seems to be more outgoing and stable. The nightmares have receded somewhat and the memories have lost some of their edge as she has buried herself in work, though she is still prone to bouts of depression and withdrawal when not working. She still harbours a deep distrust of the Inquisition, but trusts Marc, Vincent and Kelly with her life. Where they go, she goes, and she would kill and die for them without a second thought.

Appearance: Kally is still an athletic 5ft 6 inches with a hivers palour, with dark brown eyes. Her old dyed hair is almost gone, with only the tips a vibrant metallic red while the rest of her hair is a pale sandy colour, and she wears it long in a pony tail. She has a scar running round her left eye too her cheek from a glancing sword blow, and a few more on her body that aren't readily visible. The deepest scars are undoubtedly in her mind, however.

Powers: Kally as a psychic blank is immune to all psychic powers aimed directly at her. For example, a psyker could not telekinetically crush her, but he could telekinetically throw a crate at her. With access to Inquisitorial training techniques and a device known as an amplification harness, she can focus her ability into a will draining effect that can paralyse psykers in fear and send normal men running scared. The harness also replaces her collar, allowing her to use it to reflexively dampen her powers in pleasant company. Since her experiences in Hive Makita (and possibly because of her experiences in Hive Makita) her psychic blank abilities have strengthened considerably. While not as dangerous as a Culexus Assassin with an animus speculum, she is still regarded by most psykers in Sidonis employ as less a soulless abomination, more a walking anti psyker apocalypse.

Equipment:

+ Scourge Pattern Boltgun: a heavily modified Boltgun with a 3 clip fire selector, scope, and integral retractable bayonet. Its generally loaded with stalker sniper rounds (low velocity penetrators designed for quiet firing) hellfire rounds and psycannon rounds. A heavy, nasty, maintenance intensive brute of a weapon, the only reason Kally carries it is its raw stopping power, excellent accuracy over long distances and formidable profile: few people want to mess with someone carrying one of these.

+ Reinforced Military body glove. Kallys old dependable flak has been ditched in favour of a composite mil-spec suit generally issued to Storm troopers and similar specialists travelling light. The rubberised mesh weave is good for keeping out light arms and impacts, and is reinforced with light carapace plates over the chest, abdomen, shins, thighs, and upper and lower arms. A folded hood can be deployed for additional protection, but Kally generally doesn’t bother. The main benefit with this suit is that with the plates stripped out, the suit becomes light enough to be worn under appropriate civilian clothes. Generally, Kally stomps around with this suit and an overcoat.

+ Redeemer pattern Chain sword: this short, wide bladed weapon is very handy in tight spaces and well earned its unofficial moniker of 'ripper'.

+Two paired ‘steel burner’ laspistols, two cadian short combat knives.

+At Vince's insistence, three frag grenades and three krak grenades.

+Underhive survival kit
Consisting of flugs, photovisor contacts, grapnel and carbon-line, grip gloves, glow sticks, rad patch and a few doses of stimms, detox, Kalma and common antivenoms.

Background
++SEALED UNDER INQUISITORIAL REMIT++
What everyone knows about Kally Sonder is the following: The woman is cursed, either to good luck or bad, and she is tough as hell. Rumours fly that she was saved from the ruins of Makita Hive, and that she nearly killed several interrogators upon being revived for questioning. From that point on, rumors say, her hostility and blank nature made her the most difficult of witnesses following the Pembroke incident and one of the last people to be judged in relation to it. While she eventually escaped the Inquisitions dungeons, and survived the almost complete snafu on Venatora, she still spends most of her time on the True Bane alone or training intensely.

my second character:

The Soldier Scholar

“I demand to talk to the head of your teams security!”
“On matters security, I answer to the Holy God Emperor. Its my job to make sure you don't see him before your time.”

Name: Tomas Prinzel

Age: 43

Position / rank: Armsman and Bodyguard to Interrogator Malachai

Appearance: Tomas has dark brown eyes and a mop of black hair just beginning to grey at the temples, with a strong nose that has been broken more than once and a strong angular jaw. Even clean shaven his face is darkened with stubble, and he maintains a short black beard.
During the fighting on Casteria, his right eye was ripped out with a chunk of his face by a genestealer cultist. While the face healed, his eye has been replaced with a functional augmetic that is rugged, but not elegant and obviously artificial.

Personality: Tomas is a surprisingly affable soldier, with a mordant wit and love of good cigars, good amsec and fine reading material. Tested in the fires of war, he has emerged with a strong faith in the Emperor and the Inquisition, and is loyal to his team to the point of death. Possessed of a keen mind, he spends much of his off time in scholary pursuits, and enjoys discussing Imperial philosphy and doctrine, Ecclesiarchical dogma and Imperial History. In those narrow fields he fancies himself a bit of an expert, but he can come off as boorish.

Equipment:
Triplex Phall Pattern Lasgun
+with bayonet
+with hotshot power packs
+with mono sight

Hecutor 5-9 autopistol
+with silencer

Mono Bastard Sword (Casteria Patern)

Combat shield (reinforced)

Three Frag Grenades

Three Krak Grenades

Other:
High Capacity Data slate, equipped with data jacks and various device readers.

A surprisingly large collection of texts on board the True Bane, including a variety of books by Gideon Ravenor and other Imperial luminaries.

Flak armour, styled as a medieval buff coat, with mesh reinforcement and solid carapace pauldrons, bracers and greaves.

Background:

Tomas was born on Casteria III, a feudal world that orbited a pale yellow star on the edge of the Ixianad sector. A well governed world by Imperial standards, Tomas parents where merchants by trade and travelled the world extensively. The third son of the family, when he showed an aptitude for maths and reading at a young age, his parents hoped he would join one of the Adepta and bring honour to their family through service to the Emperor as he stood to inherit little from his family.
However, when he was 16 his family visited the capital of Casteria III, where the grand muster of the Imperial Guard was taking place. Tanks from a nearby forgeworld painted in Casterias royal colours rolled down the streets of the city of Hyrix, with thousands of loyal Casteria Guardsmen, bound for the starport. From that day forward, he wanted to be in the Imperial guard, and a year later he joined the Casteria Royal Infantry, hoping to make the grade for the Imperial Guard during the next grand muster.
Tomas was quickly singled out for officer training, as he was of sufficient social class and possessed of some intelligence. He served faithfully in the Royal Infantry for three years before the Imperium required another regiment of Casterian Infantry. He was an obvious candidate for the newly formed regiment, and was assigned as a sergeant to an Armoured Fist unit, a prestigious posting for a merchants son. He bid his mother and father good bye, and as is the tradition in Casteria, swore an oath on his and his families honour to his monarch, Good King Edvund the XXI, that he would uphold the honour and reputation of Casteria in the wider Imperium.

The regiment, the 256th Casterian Infantry, was then shipped to the Margin Crusade, and five years of hell fighting chaos renegades under the light of the warp anomalies and distant alien stars. During this time Tomas served with distinction and honour, leading his unit through thick and thin before being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant when his platoon leader was killed by a rampaging Defiler. After the bitter campaign that saw the regiments strength reduced to less than 50%, the regiment was cycled out and combined with the 255th Casterian Infantry, which had similarly been ripped to bits, and was unceremoniously shipped back to the Calixis sector to join the sectors war reserves.

Here his fortunes would take a change for the bizarre. Interrogator Alia Machairi was assigned to investigate a cult that had taken root amongst the various guilds of his home world of Casteria. While they where assigned to a tour on a minor world, rooting out mutant subversives, Alia approached the regiments commanders and requested a squad of Guardsmen, lead by an officer 'of distinction and letters, not some common lout'. The regiments commanders immediately assigned Tomas, and a squad of his men.

On arrival on Casteria, it was obvious the situation had changed. A full scale civil revolt was in full swing, the King was dead, and his royal family was in hiding. Interrogator Machairi immediately set to work and with the help and expertise of the local soldiers, quickly revealed that a genestealer cult had suborned several guilds and noble families. Summoning aid from the Deathwatch, the team retreated to Castle Hyrix and summoned reinforcements, while rallying the local noble court.

It was now that the cultists struck. Having tunnelled into the Castle dungeons, genestealer hybrids, and a few deadly purestrains, struck the court in an attempt to kill the Interrogator and her allies. The fighting was nightmarish and bloody, and Tomas was the only survivor from his squad, but through their sacrifice Interrogator Machairi survived to meet the Deathwatch reinforcements. With Machairis hard won intelligence, the Deathwatch where quickly able to purge the Genestealer infestation and free Casteria from the grip of civil war.

Tomas, for his service to the Inquisition, was offered the chance to stay on his homeworld. Indeed the royal family promised him a significant position as General of the Royal Infantry if he should chose to stay, along with noble titles and gifts of land. Staying only long enough to transfer that gift to his surviving family, he left with Interrogator Machairi, slowly becoming one of her chief agents and her primary bodyguard. While some rumours aboard the Truebane paint the pair as lovers, the truth is simply that Tomas has deep and abiding respect for the Interrogator, and is totally loyal to her.

The Remus family is best described as an old tree, containing hundreds of branches and thousands of leaves. Withering and yet sprouting new life over the course of millennia. Each child of a successive generation has the ability to sprout another branch, but like most gardens it must be pruned. If one of its daughters marries out, their first born must be of the Remus name. Those exhibiting mutant traits are expunged or bastardized. Luckily for my eldest sister, the Remus family accepts those with psychic traits, however, any children she may foster will also be bastardized. Remus will only accept pure stock.

And I've always hated it...

A family of some renown its sons and daughters having a long standing tradition of attending the Schola Progenium becoming members of the Inquisition, the Commissariat, Adepta Sororitas or the Imperial Guard. For Julianus however he was destined to a life of duty to protect and provide security in the halls of the fortresses of the Inquisition. He has been allocated to several Inquisitors for numerous assignments, tasks which have led him to believe the result of all things falls to the cursed gods and leaving him suspect of rooting out cult activity wherever it be found.

He was born the sixth child of his generation, his older siblings often left him envious by their own successes or current positions of notably higher standard. His sisters, a Soroitas Hospitalar and a Ordo Xeno Inquisitor, the latter personally requesting his services to merely rub it in. Something that left him wondering if she ever truly grew up or how she even became an Inquisitor in the first place. His brothers two officers of the Guard and a Commissar; the oldest son a man who Julianus no longer considered his brother, having led to the death of another one of his older male siblings.

His home world, routinely called the First that being it is the capital of the Sector and coincidentally the first to be colonized by man. A high tech system at the back end of the universe, now at war with the Tau Empire as those young xenos continually attempt to expand their sphere. Julianus would have rather signed himself up to the Guard, fighting and dieing for his home, not here, not for family tradition on some far flung backwater he hadn't even heard of.

Fucking ay, I took on a rowdy lot of ya' three times your size before breakfast. This'll be easy...-- You have the right to be ventilated. I have the right to burn your home and destroy every vestige of your existence. Do you understand your rights as I have read them to you?

Ditto, outside his helmet.

Name: Glabrio Hybrida
Age: 28 Terran Years
Position: Ex-Regulator/Agent

Personality:
- Stubborn
- Egotistical
- Glory hound

Weapons:
- 2 Auto-pistols: A matched pair of high capacity, hollow-point cartridge auto-pistols, taken from Hybrida's own personal stock. Modified to carry extended magazines with reinforced rounds, supplied with more grain than usual.

- Shock maul: This pattern of Power Maul is a versatile, one-handed weapon with two power settings. At its low setting, the maul's head delivers an electrical shock powerful enough to stun its targets, just like a regular Shock Maul. At the high setting however, the energy forms a crackling power field that can sunder steel, armour, and flesh.

- Snub-nosed stub pistol: A six-rounded revolver holstered and hidden around the ankle. An extra piece should Hybrida ever find himself out of ammunition or a situation where he is away from his traditional sidearms.

- 2 Bright grenades
- 2 Stun grenades
- 1 Frag grenade

Equipment:
- Carapace armour: Arbitrator carapace armour is constructed from dense plasteel plates overlaying a synthetic polyplastic fibre weave that must be produced in an orbital null-gravity manufactorum. Arbites carapace armour is designed to be clipped together and worn over a light, breathable bodyglove, the armour carefully constructed and tailor-made to the proportions of the Arbitrator concerned. Given that the armour must be worn for hours at a time, often during periods of extreme physical exertion, it must be light and comfortable, and it succeeds surprisingly well on these fronts.

- Matching helmet: The carapace helm is equipped with a vox-torc and is open at the mouth to allow easier verbal communication. The helm is, however, capable of being hermetically sealed in seconds; which doubles as a rebreather. It also contains polarising lenses which react instantly to light over a certain lumen level, and which have the effect of negating photonic flash grenades completely.

- Jelly beans: A small bean-shaped type of confectionery with a soft candy shell and a gel interior which come in a wide variety of flavors. The confection is primarily made of sugar.

Background:
Glabrio of the family Hybrida, one which the citizens of the Imperium would be unfamiliar with - like so many countless others. His is a name seeking prestige, fighting for every bit of renown one can scrap up. But to shine as a beacon in the sea of a billion-billion subjects is a difficult mantel to attain. His parents were standing members of Imperial commerce, his grandparents before them workers designing Imperial infrastructure, and those before them members of local politics. Glabrio was the bad apple of the latest generation of Hybrida, the middle child, one who never received enough discipline, or attention when he was a child.

He was the bully, one to look for trouble, one to always start the fights. His life in the church schools was one of juvenile violence, and numerous cases of suspension. His test scores were average, and he was cunning enough to avoid the drafting of the Guard. Glabrio sought a better name for himself, to strive to his parents badgering, to what their name deserved. Strings could only take him so far, and the professions of his forefathers were continuously out of reach.

A compromise had to be found, and as such he was willing to relent and take a position in the local Arbiters. The investigations into political corruption and the scrutiny of regulating Imperial law was a bore to him. So he looked into the other departments of the Arbiters, where he found a role as a regulator. His past seemed to control him, and he became somewhat of a lone wolf, a bane in the underhive. He had a knack for weeding out the gangers, the dealers, the insurgents, and the riffraff.

So much so that most of the notorious gangs had given Hybrida and his team nicknames. Then came the Inquisition... He still wonders why they took him with them. Why he isn't dead. Perhaps they saw him as a potential asset, or maybe they just liked his charming personality. For two years he's served under them, fought for the so called greater Imperium, trading the squabbles of thieves for all manner of Xenos.

He'd rather take his chances with the Xenos.

I maintain that they are actually all the same person; he keeps his helmet on to avoid being recognised on CCTV etc, and exhibits different personalities at different times to throw his colleagues off the scent.

I'll be watching very carefully to see if Remus and Glabrio ever actually appear "on screen" at the same time. :D

EDIT - How exactly is Glabrio's surname pronounced? HY-brid-ah or Hib-REE-da (which is less intuitive, but sounds better spoken aloud)?

And while we're on the subject: for anyone who's wondering, Vincent's surname is pronounced "Nil" and Alia's is Mach-AIR-ree (as per the original Greek, with the ch pronounced as in the Scottish word "loch") rather than Ma-KYE-ree.

A quick summary of all the major NPC characters. For links to PC profiles, see "Team Roster" in the first post (http://role-player.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56940&p=1926186&viewfull=1#post1926186).

Hercynia, however, is currently classified as a warzone, and so he took a squad of more experienced agents with him for the mission.

http://image.xyface.com/image/d/artist-daniela-amavia/daniela-amavia-310824.jpg

Age: 6 Solomon years, 27 Terran standard
Rank: Field agent
Profile: A former hive enforcer detective, Marc has actually served the inquisition in an undercover capacity for the last 2 years. Like Kally and Vincent, Marc is a survivor of the Pembroke Incident which destroyed Solomon's Makita hive. In the wake of this mysterious case he was transferred to inquisitor lord Sidonis and now serves openly as a field investigator. He is intelligent, loyal to a fault towards those he considers family, and occasionally quite ruthless. Shaped by events on Solomon, he has no tolerance for traitors or cop-killers of any kind.

Age: 6 Solomon years, 25 Terran standard
Rank: Verispex / Scene of Crime Officer
Profile: Inadvertently caught up in the events at Makita hive, Kelly Black was also brought in for questioning and, ultimately, offered new employment under Sidonis. A qualified verispex, she also has valuable field training from the Makita Hive Enforcers, as well as the recent mission to Venatora. She can usually be relied on to make quick, logical decisions under pressure.

http://www.relativityonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/Mickey-Rourke_0.jpg
Age: 85 Delphi years, 57 Terran standard
Rank: Field agent
Profile: A career Guardsman turned bounty hunter in the employ of rogue trader Ottik Klimment, Vince is a man who has seen it all and has little desire to see it all again. He has something of a split personality; at times he can be cheerful (even if he is getting cranky in his old age), talkative and even a bit cheeky, enjoying the company of his comrades and telling the odd tall tale. At other times, however, he is belligerent, aggressive and prone to sinking into periods of depression as well as fits of extreme violence. His wish to find a way out of inquisition service is, so far, something he has only confided to his friend Kally Sonder.

Age: No data available
Rank: Chartered trader
Profile: One of the major arms dealers to the Hercyinian government, specifically to the Enclave, its bastion on the still-independent west continent. She does not suffer fools or competition gladly, and claims to have the ear of the planetary governor.

I remembered that I can just copy and paste Vizkop's profile with a few tweaks. But, I do plan to bring in a second character for a little diversity on part to prove that yes I can in fact play non-Mechanicus characters. :say:

Name: Vizkop
Age: 75
Position/Rank: Mechanicus Covert Operations Specialist

http://images.gamestar.de/images/idgwpgsgp/bdb/2198914/1280x1024.jpg

Personality: Amiable, clear-headed, cool under pressure. Just a few things to describe Vizkop.

Weapons: He carries two primary weapons. One is a custom designed stub pistol with an integrated silencer and the other is a large bore stub revolver meant to take down armored targets. He also has a pair of hidden blades integrated into his arms that include power fields.
Other: Under his robes, he wears an armored body glove for protection.
In addition to standard Mechanicus implants, both Vizkop's arms are bionic as are his legs, ribs, and spine. His hearing and sight have also been enhanced through cybernetics. He has also been fitted with subdermal armour lacing for added protection.

Background: After the action on Venatora, more has come to light about Vizkop's life prior to Inquisitorial service. Primarily his life working as an assassin for a secretive society within the Mechanicus. Many of his exact activities are sealed inside data vaults. After his actions on Venatora, his cybernetics saw a complete overhaul and he was fitted with new limbs.

Think Lizzy could hop in on this?

MrAGrimm
02-27-2014, 06:40 AM
Name: Aleksandr Esw Sadyr
Age: 26
Position / rank: Armsman, Field Agent
Appearance: Aleksandr like most natives of Carthae stands well over two metres tall, approximately 6’11, with a shaggy mane of silver hair, and pale grey eyes. Duelling scars mark the left side of his clean shaven angular face. Early in his service with the inquisition, he lost his left arm in combat with an Dark Eldar Pirate, since then he has received an bionic arm augment, plated in black plasteel. Large portions of his body are given over to intricate tattooing, each one describing an achievement in his life.

Personality: Generally the quiet one in the group, he often lets others do the talking during missions, only finding his voice when it is most needed. His will is strong for one with so few years under his belt, many have mistaken this for the hard headedness of youth. The Emperium is his home, and the team his family, coming between him and either of them is a mistake most don’t make twice. During the downtime between missions , he often spends his hours sharpen his skills with a blade, or in more mundane pursuits like reading and the making of origami animals.

Weapons:
Force sword – Inherited from his mother after her death in the service to the Inquisition. The blade is long and slightly curved, engraved with pentagrammic wards, with a two handed hilt wrapped in copper and silver wire.

Scipio pattern Naval auto pistol – A heavy brute of a gun, fires all standard auto pistol ammunition, though generally loaded with dum dum rounds for increased stopping power. Like most naval arms, it is built to withstand the harshness of the void, solid enough some say to crack an orc skull. Heonly resorts to using the gun when work with the sword is impractical.

Combat knife - standard imperial guard pattern.

Other:
Latent/wyrd psyker - like many of the people on Carthae, Aleksandr has latent psyker abilities. His manifested in the quickening, and telepathy, unlike so many other psykers he cannot bestow the quickening or quicksilver unto others, but only himself, heightening his combat speed and reactions to superhuman levels. Though still young, Aleksandr is learning and mastering his latent abilities slowly but surely strengthening his mind, and will to become a better agent of the Inquisition.
Armoured body glove - Form fitting leather body glove, with mate black carapace armour on the chest, abdomen, arms, and legs. Often with a long coat of tanned leather.
Vox bead
Equipment webbing - spare ammo, multi-key, data slate, small spool of mono filament wire.

Backround: Born on the tribal planet Carthae, into the Esw sadyr clan. He didn’t have much opportunity to know his mother before she left planet, leaving behind a husband and infant child. Aleksandr’s youth was spent much like any other childs on Carthae practicing and perfecting the graceful sword art his people are famous for. Though his was not a happy youth, none in his clan ever spoke to him of his mother, only upon her death and the return of her body and sword to Carthae was the nature of her departure revealed to the young man . She had departed like so many other Carthaens to serve the God-Emperors Holy Inquisition, these and other facts of her life weren’t told to him by his father or elders of his clan, but by Inquisitor that she served for more then a decade.
The anger of youth at being abandoned by a parent soon faded, as the aged Inquisitor, named Shylocke regaled him with stories of his mothers loyalty and courage, and finally the tale of her death. It was near the end of this tale that the reason for the Inquisitor’s personal escort of her body came out, she had made him promise that on her sons day of ascension to man hood, he would be taken under the Inquisitors wing to train and hone the latent psyker powers of his blood line. When the time came Shylocke returned to witness the trials of manhood, though at the end leaving Aleksandr no time to rejoice with his clan, for important work was at hand.
He served Inquisitor Shylocke faithfully for four years, never wavering in his duty. In those four short years, Aleksandr had come into his powers with singular ability, best foes that should have been beyond his skill. Near the end of his fourth year serving under Shylocke, who had become something of a surrogate grandfather, he was killed in a battle with Dark Eldar pirates, the same battle that cost Aleksandr his left arm. With no Interrogators serving him, the duty of settling Inquisitor Shylockes affairs fell to Aleksandr, as he was the closest the old man had to a protégé.
It was during this grief filled period, that he found part of his future had already been decided. In Shylockes personal effects he found a letter, penned in the Inquisitors own hand, addressed to another respected member of the ordo Inqusitor Immanuel Sidonis. It seemed to him that his old master had forseen his death, and wished for the young man to continue his service to the Inqusition. Having served under the Lord Inquisitor Sidonis, and subsequently Interrogator Machairi for the past two years, he’s developed a good working relationship with the interrogator and the members of the team, often enjoying conversing with the scholarly soldier Tomas. The only member of the team he is often distant from is Kally Sonder, its nothing personal against his fellow team member, but more an aversion to her being an untouchable. Like most people with pskyer abilities, he finds untouchables uncomfortable to be around.

@ Cfavano - Based on a timeline from characters who feature in multiple RPs, this story is happening several years before Silent Forge. As such I'm not sure that Elizabeth would be old enough to be in active service at this time (also, she works for a different inquisitor)?

Azazeal849

Lord Sidonis (and hence his protégés) are Ordo Xenos. Hercynia only caught Schafer's attention because it's a known haunt of an alien artefact smuggler he's been tracking since the previous RP.

Cfavano
02-27-2014, 06:58 PM
But wouldn't he technically still be a heretic? I mean, yes, the artefacts themselves would be under the ordo Xenos, but don't the Ordo Xenos deal with alien threats directly? From what I gather, this Artefact smuggler would be a threat from inside the imperium, and thus under the jurisdiction of the ordo hereticus.

Azazeal849
02-27-2014, 07:25 PM
When you think about it, all 3 ordos have to deal with "heretics" on a daily basis, because "heresy" is a very broad term in the Imperium. The Xenos are the people with the expertise to assess the artefacts, find out where they came from, dispose of them safely...and like all inquisitors, they have the authority to terminate whatever is causing the threat.

You raise an interesting point though - I imagine that inquisitors argue with each other about remits and jurisdictions all the time.

MrAGrimm
02-27-2014, 11:37 PM
Not so much that it isn't still effective. I just had a thought though, its pretty clear that the Inquisition is divided into many factions, and sub factions, with rivalries between the factions and the different individual inquisitors. Despite the rivalries and other problems within the Inquisition, it is still effective. So maybe, just maybe this is exactly what the high lords of terra want, a little healthy competition between allies and rivals does seem to make most step up their game.

Cfavano
02-27-2014, 11:47 PM
And that's what lead to the Horus Heresy!

Azazeal849
02-27-2014, 11:50 PM
I'd argue the opposite; this happened because of the Horus Heresy.

The entire Imperium is arguably built around competition and segregation, to check any one person from getting too much power. And it is very easy for corrupt people to gather too much power when the Imperium is based on fascist concentration of power. But then, a fascist system is the only way the Imperium can come close to being united enough to fend off its many enemies. There's no easy solution. That's why the 40K universe is interesting.

Cfavano
02-27-2014, 11:55 PM
No, I mean, the fostering of rivalries.

Horus tried to foster friendly rivalries among his brothers to try and make them better, but it instead only made them hate each other, and made the Heresy easier to happen

MrAGrimm
02-28-2014, 12:26 AM
On that point i have to disagree, the primarch didn't hate each other, well not all of them, some were quite close. it wasn't Horus you brought on the heresy but Logar. He was punished by the emperor becasue he went against the imperial truth, and turned it into a religion, which i believe is one of the things the great crusade was against. Logar is also the one credited with writing the book which created the faith in the god-emperor. But like any petulant child being punished by the parent they so love and adore, he rebelled. Not an open rebllion, which would have failled. he looked for allies and foudn them in the gods of chaos, he sent his most trusted man to corrupt Horus and succeed. Sad to say but Horus was a pawn, Logar is the one who is behind the Horus Heresy, it wasn't caused by rivalries between the primarchs, but by a son who couldn't come to terms with being punished for going against his fathers will.

Ollanius Pius was the man who stood up to Horus on his flagship when the emperor was about to lose. Horus flayed the man's soul from his body and that's what clued the Emperor in on the fact that Horus had to be stopped.

Here a poem about it:

he first time I hold my blood in my hands,
The first time I see a man with nothing.
Would be the first time I see my own lands,
Covered in heresy, death, and rotting.

My son stands over him corrupt and pale,
A guard Ollanius Pius stands free.
My fallen Horus lifts the deadly flail,
In one instant, the strength of man I see.

This mere man done what I was unable.
A tear flows from my eye and it is clear,
The tyrant’s cold reign I must disable.
Briefly I know what it is to feel fear.

I leave the future to the strength of man,
For they alone do far more than I can.

Also, Ollanius Pius is HUMAN. GW Retconned him into being a perpetual, but in original canon lore, he was just another Guardsman.

It's certainly possible that Lizzy could end up being very different, personally and as an Imperial agent, based off of what happens in Silver then when she appears in Silent Forge. Honestly, I think she'd be cheated out of an opportunity for character development and growth by roleplaying if you're fleshing out her past and present at the same time.

I'm going to say no because of the continuity issues, which PaintSerf has explained quite well above. You are, however, quite welcome to submit a different character.

Deathwatch are Marines, albeit with a different paint scheme and neater equipment. Very rad Marines, but still ultimately Marines.

I'd have to agree with Dakkagor. Marines are rather dull to roleplay with, and that's the best case scenario. At the worst, Marines can easily be an unwelcome distraction or outright derailing influence on a story.

dakkagor

I think part of your problem Cfavano is you are thinking in terms of 40k units, rather than 40k characters. and I don't mean Marneus Calgar or Yarrick, but the small bit parts, the faceless masses, the civilians and the scribes and the machinists and the serfs. the teeming masses of humanity.

Look at what we have already, boiled down to their basics:

A crack detective (Marc)
A forensics specialist (Kelly)
A bounty hunter (Kally)
An ex veteran soldier (Vincent)
A bodyguard (Tomas)
A swat team member (Galabrio)
A special forces soldier (Remus)
A nun with medical training (Sapphira)

Notice something about all of those descriptions? They could all be plugged, in their barest descriptions, into any science fiction game or setting, or even a modern pulp setting. Its the details that ground them in the 41st millennium as characters. From the previous game, Fredriq (The scribe) is a great example of this: he's just a guy that reads books, but it was all the details around that core idea that cemented him so far into the setting he was part of its fabric. The background, his education in a schola, his bionic implants, the fact the Inquisition didn't trust him (knowledge, and curiosity is suspicious)

Even Vizkop can be boiled down to a Government Agent, with some thought. He has more in common with a CIA agent than anything else. (especially his level of training and equipment, his equipment is quite light for a Mechanicus field agent).

None of the characters bring overwhelming firepower of psychic might to the table. The heaviest weapon is a bolter, one I've taken pains to describe as not as devastating as an astartes bolter and just as maintenance intensive. Even Lia, the scary tank girl, can be taken down with concentrated fire at range.

So don't think about what you want to play from the 40k universe: think about what you want to play as a character, then see how that character would warp and evolve to fit the 41st millennium.

Atrum Daemon

I actually meant to update Vizkop's equipment to something more in line with what he is normally outfitted with. Knew there was a reason I was originally holding off posting him here.

I'll try and think of something.

What about someone who's good at infiltration and stealth, like a scout/spy?

Azazeal849

So, this is kind of a Dark Heresy thing?

Sort of. I frame most of my inquisitor RPs this way because, while inquisitors can and do requisition massive forces when the shit hits the fan (or if they're on a power trip), it's not the way they usually operate - for the same reasons that MI6 agents aren't normally seen fighting alongside the British Army, or even alongside spec ops people like the SAS. It's just not the most efficient way to combat the threats that they were formed to take on.

What about someone who's good at infiltration and stealth, like a scout/spy?

That could work. To address your two earlier suggestions, Machairi does not have a reason or the authority to call in a member of the assassin temples, but a special weapons soldier might find some use.

The timeline for this game last had us at 605.M41, according to the original post from the Replicants (http://role-player.net/forum/showthread.php?t=39992) - second paragraph under the Governor Faroven spoiler box. The Sabbat Worlds Crusade kicked off in 755, and the Tanith regiments weren't even mustered for at least a decade since the battle for Balhaunt was in 765 - dates double checked from the Sabbat Worlds Crusade campaign book.

Hmm, how about a Tallarn?

Cfavano
03-01-2014, 06:47 PM
Name: Abdur Raheem Salah
Age: 30
Position / rank: Infiltration/Demolitions expert
Appearance: http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/060/c/6/desert_fox__tallarn_raider2_by_1mpact-d3aoctt.jpg

.
Personality: Abdur is extremely devoted to the Emperor and his work, and only very rarely questions his orders. While he can see detatched from others because of his line of work, if someone takes the time to get past this cold, outer exterior, one would find that he is a very kind soul.
Weapons: Chainsword, combat knife, Shotgun (with attachable suppressor), Bolt pistol firing stalker silenced rounds.
Other: Flak armor, camo cape, range finder, rebreather, det, breaching, and tube charges. Is proficient in all manner of explosives, and can set and/or disarm most, if not all Imperial-made explosive devices. Can also create IEDs. If given to him, he can effectively use a missile launcher or a plasma gun. Frag and flas grenades.

Background: Not much can be said about his early years. He was a guardsman, he did his duty. However, even in the stealth-focused forces of the Tallarn Desert Raiders, he stood out. He was a veritable ghost among the ghosts, being the top man in his platoon. Eventually, he was recruited by the Inquisition for his skills, and that is where he finds himself today.

I can think of a few points in the RP where his skills will come in handy. He also might have a good relationship with the commander of Task Force Carbon (major Kadath Al-Omar) since they're both from Tallarn.

Would love to know how a suppressor works on a shotgun though...

Never mind, I wasn't going to allow any marine characters in this story anyway. Nothing known about the mission so far justifies calling them in. Marines are suited to spec ops and high intensity warfare, not intelligence work. There's also the fact that, from a meta perspective, they never seem to mix well with human PCs.

You see, people mistakenly believe that a suppressor is supposed to 'make the gun silent'. While usually, the noise is reduced, the true purpose of a suppressor is to make the shot not sound like a shot. Like, instead of a bang, more like a 'thud' or 'whizz'.

In fact, one of the original suppressed weapons, called the 'hush puppy' which was put on a pistol to quietly kill guard dogs, the first few shots fired from a gun with it, you only heard the action cycling.

I think the only Deathwatch marine that would work well in this would be a Kill-marine, since they generally operate alone or with inquisitors, and don't normally wear power armour. The Lexicanum website has a decent page on them. But i understand the reasons behind not wanting space marines in an rp, at least as player characters. i think space wolves owuld get along with normal humans, aslong as they can drink haha

I already have most of the intro written, so we should be good to go once we receive the profiles for the last couple of characters.

As for what Machairi's people would know, Schafer and his team foiled a xenos attack on Venatora (suspected Necron involvement although no actual Necrons were seen) orchestrated by clone copies of Imperial personnel with regeneration abilities. They were also able to clone vehicles and hijack computer systems, and nearly destroyed Venatora with its own orbital defence network. All known clones ("replicants") were destroyed and the control signal that seemed to be directing them (or possibly enabling their regeneration) was stopped by bombing its source on the dead planet Vitaris. Vitaris is now under quarantine while the Ordo Xenos searches for any other signs of Necron activity.

The second character I mentioned. After toying around with various ideas, this is the one I was most happy with. As always, if anything doesn't jive, I am happy to compromise.

Name: Malpais Malzel
Age: 30
Position / rank: Psyker Warrior
Appearance:
http://media.gamerevolution.com/images/games/ps3/damnation/damnation_016.jpg

Personality: He keeps to himself primarily and proves to be a rather humble person when questioned about his abilities or training. Though lacking in most social skills, he does his best to be involved when he is able despite his rather intense temper. Along with his temper, Malpais can also be seen as mildly obsessive compulsive. Most of his personality quirks are attributed to his level of psionic ability.

Weapons:
His primary weapon is a force sword fashioned similarly to a cavalry sabre. However, the blade is slightly longer as is the grip to allow for a comfortable two-handed grip should Malpais desire it. The weapon was forged and crafted specifically for his hands.

Other:
Malpais is a high-grade gamma-level psyker and an accomplished pyromancer and telekinetic along with his very domineering mind-reading capabilities.

His armor consists of simple, matte black flak armor fashioned for a snugger fit to the wearer's body consisting of chest armor, gauntlets, and greaves.

He also possesses a set of wrist mounts built in with the equivalent of a lighter flame. The purpose is to assure he has a source of open flame for his pyrotechnic abilities.

Background: His early life is of little consequence save only to say that he was lucky enough to be discovered as a psyker when he was young. His sanctioning and training marked him out as a one-in-a-billion find: A high-grade gamma psyker with relatively few personality disorders. His temper proved to be the greatest issue with his placement, but in the end a small temple who trained psykers as warrior-monks took him.

The temple renamed him Malpais and set about shaping him into a soul that could be of use to the Imperium as more than an abused mind on some distant battlefield. He was taught proper humility and trained in the psychic disciplines he showed natural talent for. He was encouraged to stay away from telepathy as he proved too domineering a mind to properly conduct a psychic interrogation without damaging the subject.

Upon completion of his training and rites, Malpais was given a force sword crafted specifically for his grip. Not long after he left the ranks of the trainees, the psychic warrior was snatched up the Inquistion as a psychic resource against threats to Mankind.

03-06-2014, 04:20 PM
Name: Sapphira
Age: 28
Position / rank: Sister Hospitaller

Appearance: Sapphira stands just over five a half feet with an athletically petite build. She is fine featured with pale skin that starkly contrasts with her black hair, which is styled in the conventional Sororita manner. Just below her catlike gray eyes, on her left cheek, is a small and delicately done fleur-de-lys tattoo that affirms her allegiance as a Daughter of the Emperor. The right side of Sapphira’s face was struck with shrapnel fragments during the Venatora incident. While the minor scratches have fully healed and are all but faded away, the more serious lacerations have healed into what will be prominent scars.

Sister Sapphira (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1857455104/tt1104001)

Carapace (http://images.wikia.com/warhammer40k/images/0/08/Hospitaler_Sister.jpg)

Personality: Sapphira genuinely cares about the complete well-being of her patients and colleagues, and does not hesitate to offer her assistance if necessary or requested. Years spent working alongside other branches of Imperial service as a healer has made her more tolerant than a more orthodox Sororita would be, albeit up to certain limits that no Sister could abide. Despite her general amiability Sapphira is still a devoted and dutiful professional who can and will set aside her own personal reservations to do what needs to be done.

Equipment:

Attire: Sapphira is typically seen in the modest dove gray dress of her order, when not in crimson surgical robes, and almost exclusively without the habit unless in formal situations. When Sapphira is on field assignment they are worn over a black body glove reinforced to resist bludgeoning or stabbing attacks, which also serves as the under-suit of her carapace armor. She keeps her chaplet ecclesiasticus on person and prefers to wear it around the neck in non-combat situations. When the need to be armed arises Sapphira wears a functional black leather utility belt that holsters her weapons, ammunition, and smaller pieces of equipment.

Carapace: Heavily damaged in the Venatora incident, Sapphira’s distinctive glossy black Hospitaller carapace has been rebuilt and repaired by the Mechanicus fabricators aboard the True Bane. On the left forearm is an underslung, energy cell powered bone saw. Mounted below the right shoulder plate are reservoir vials of kalma and paralytum, with fluid lines that run down the arm and end with an injector array. The fabricators have also made a ballistic helmet that is reminiscent of the Sabbat pattern worn by the militant orders. It has been enhanced by photo lenses, automatic noise dampeners, and an inbuilt rebreather.

Plasma Pistol – Ryza Pattern: Sapphira acquired this weapon during the Venatora incident, and it has recently been returned to her following re-sanctification by the Mechanicus armorers. Like all Imperial plasma weapons it is undeniably potent and potentially unstable, even fatally so. The small plasma flask can accommodate ten shots at normal power and three at maximal power. Due to the impractical and often unnecessary nature of reloading plasma weapons in combat, Sapphira does not keep a spare flask on her person.

Stub Revolver: Sapphira’s original sidearm and the practical alternative to her plasma pistol. She has taken to using the aptly named amputator rounds, which are vicious munitions filleded with explosive micro-shrapnel, since the events on Venatora. While using these rounds the humble stub revolver can be as damaging as a bolt pistol, but it lacks the armor penetration of revered bolt weaponry. This weapon can accommodate other specialized or normal stub rounds as available or necessary.

Data-slate: Primarily used for physical evaluations when coupled with the diagnostic scanner wand. Sapphira keeps her clinical notations and acquired evidence on the slate, so it has been further augmented with standard Inquisitorial encryptions. It has been further enhanced with a hardened and shock resistant exterior case for field deployments.

Medi-Kit: Sapphira’s satchel bag of medical equipment, the contents of which are higher quality and quantity than the typical kit carried by an Imperial Guard medic or Officio Medicae field surgeon.

Background: Sapphira was born into a family of Imperial servants on an equally valuable and deplorable mining planet. Not even half a decade after her birth there was a global labor rights and welfare strike that exploded into a full blow anti-Imperial uprising. Despite horrendous initial losses, loyalist elements were able to hold until an intervention force arrived. The secessionist revolt was comprehensively quashed by an Astartes spearheaded taskforce. While a comparatively short affair it was notably bloody for the native population. Orphaned like so many other young girls and boys throughout the millennia, Sapphira was turned over to the nearest Schola Progenium for education and indoctrination.

The post-graduation track chosen for Sapphira was to enter the Sisterhood as an aspirant Hospitaller. Shortly thereafter she was sent to the Convent Sanctorum on Ophelia VII and inducted into the Order of Serenity. Once her formal education and training was completed, Sapphira was honored by her order to remain on Ophelia VII and work directly for the Ecclesiarchy alongside other Imperial organizations. With an understandable amount of frequency she ended up working alongside Inquisitorial representatives. One of those operatives, a senior interrogator for Lord Immanuel Sidonis, extended an offer of service almost four standard years ago and Sapphira accepted.

Here goes! I hope it works.

Name: Solvan Balannor
Age: 143 (Looks 45 due to rejuvenation drugs)
Position/Rank: Priest (former bishop of Torvex IV)

Appearance: Aristocratic face, slightly tanned skin with green eyes and carefully trimmed hair and beard (both grey). Medium build which seems lighter in his loose priest robes. An inch less than 6 feet tall, but tends to walk slightly hunched over. All adds to a somewhat forgettable look at a quick glance.

http://reelybored.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/exorcismus_640x360_07.jpg

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qVWlNFOAQ74/T2xxMVmPNTI/AAAAAAAAAGw/TDB2BnhADGk/s1600/Exorcismus-03.jpg

Personality: Calm and amiable, has an innate ease to win the trust of people around him. With a core of unshakable faith, yet tries to avoid getting too preachy with fellow teammates unless he deems it absolutely necessary (for the saving of their immortal souls) or specifically asked for. Has a passion for books that doesn’t only concern theological texts but also philosophy, history and almost any subject he happens to stumble across. A lover of fine dining and expensive liquor (a weakness he carries from his former life) but he tries not to indulge in these earthly desires too often. The time he doesn’t spend reading he spends it praying and performing the holy rites, he rarely sleeps more than a couple of hours a day. Despite his humble attitude he has no issues in speaking his mind. As a priest he acts as counselor and confessor for any who may ask.

Equipment:

Weapons:

-Holy Warhammer of Guldanor: Antic family heirloom, passed along the family members that took the path of priesthood. It works as a thunderhammer, but since it is so old the mechanism is starting to fail, most of the time works properly, but sometimes it is just a simple blunt weapon and others it overcharges, deals tremendous damage to the target and gives Solvan a hard electric shock, Solvan of course attributes these fluctuations in weapon efficiency with signs of the Emperor’s will).

-Blessed Autopistol: High quality gun, engraved with holy text in blessed silver.

-Hand Flamer

Armor:

-Priest robes and faith (although the flak armor vest under it sure helps).

-Rosarius

Other:

-Holy water, incense burner (one small chained to his belt and one large that he keeps for ceremonial purpouses), a gold aquila pendant, assortment of holy texts, bishop’s ring, seals of purity, a red silk richly embroidered in gold and silver ceremonial bishop's gown he rarely wears.

Background:

Born into a wealthy family in the Hive World of Torvex IV Solvan had every comfort money could buy, though he didn’t see much of his parents he had a happy childhood. Since his older sister Allana (which he loved dearly) was chosen to be the heir to the family’s wealth he was sent to join the ranks of the Ecclesiarchy. He started his priesthood formation at the age of 10 and quickly showed great potential. Despite his distaste for physical violence Slovan found out he was a decent fighter due to the obligatory training that was enforced on the new Ecclesiarchy members, after all the enemies of the Emperor rarely surrendered to words alone. By the age of 35 he was a bishop and already an expert in diplomatic and political struggle having to go over several colleges to reach his position. He hardly was a man of great faith and usually spent more energy attending to the fancy dinners and parties with the Hive’s elite than to watch out for the spiritual health of the populace. It was at this time he started using rejuvenation drugs to keep him at a healthy 30. He was smart enough to hide his vices and maintaining his superiors happy (everyone has vices as he quickly learned).

But everything changed when Inquisitor Lossek Walldrun showed up with evidence of heresy festering in his flock. He was of course outraged, demanded to have these heretics found and punished. He put his resources and his servants at the inquisitor’s disposal. After a month the efforts bore fruit. A rich black market for heretic artifacts was dismantled and in the heart of it all, was his own family lead by his loving sister Allana. Despite thorough searching no evidence that linked Solvan with his sister’s crime was ever found. Even so the inquisitor handed him the responsibility of giving out the verdict at the trial, as a test of loyalty. He spent a week without sleep and without food, he kneeled in the Great Cathedral and prayed until his knees bled. In that week his soul was reformed, convinced that the Emperor was punishing him for his lack of faith and his failure to fulfill the duty bestowed upon him. When the time came he was a new man, he sentenced his sister and her accomplices to death by fire without so much as a blink (he even carried the torch at the execution) not only that but on a totally unexpected move he sentenced himself (though he wasn’t charged with any crime) for his lack of zeal to a lifetime of servitude to the Inquisitor. It has been 15 years since then, now his age is starting to show since he doesn’t use rejuvenation drugs. Lossek died 3 years ago, terminating Solvan’s debt, but he immediately volunteered to remain in service. Due to his usefulness both in combat and political intrigue it wasn’t long before his skills were put to use by another inquisitorial agent, Alia Machairi.

Holy Shit, an Ecclisiarch? Dayum. "You get faith! and You get faith! and You get faith!" XD

Although, I am surprised and appalled that his power maul (regular humans can't wield thunder hammers without power armor as far as I know) is malfunctioning so. That, in and of itself is a sin. No self-respecting anyone in the imperium would go into battle with it. Blessed or not. and No Tech-priest would let him use it in that condition.

I also think that an ancient weapon like that wouldn't be broken (Example, the Sword of Hieronymo Sondar is over 3,000 years old, and works better than current technology)

But that's just my opinion.

Plus, if it shocks him as you say, that'd outright kill him. Powers weapons aren't exactly low voltage XD

Also, I thought only bolters or other rifle-types could be combi-weaponed?

I also think that an ancient weapon like that wouldn't be broken (Example, the Sword of Hieronymo Sondar is over 3,000 years old, and works better than current technology)

It isn't a thunderhammer perse, but works like one. Didn't seem out of place with other weapons included thus far. If necessary I will change accordingly to a power maul though, no problem. Humans without power armor can use power fists, thunderhammers don't seem that different? On the broken issue, it is mainly intended for giggles, and who knows perhaps it IS the Emperor's will? Since he is a high ranking member in the Ecclesiarchy I'm guessing there aren't many who would be bothered to convince him to stop using it until repaired, plus the only one who would know it isn't working is him, and he thinks it is a blessing xD.

Plus, if it shocks him as you say, that'd outright kill him. Powers weapons aren't exactly low voltage XD

Also, I thought only bolters or other rifle-types could be combi-weaponed?

Well the idea is the electricity that goes through the handle is a fraction of what the weapon is capable of, so while it hurts it doesn’t kill him.

In Dark Heresy you can combi pretty much any weapon as far as I remember. I had a shotgun with combi-flamer and was legal.

But as I said before. I'm open to change whatever needs changing.

Cheers.

I know, I'm not complaining. Just, like, talking. I like your guy.

And a thunder hammer is exactly like a powerfist. AP1, and unwieldy. The difference is it's size. THunder hammers are HUGE, seeing as how only terminators can one-hand them, and a regular marine has to use both hands. But I could be wrong.

But combi-weapons are only one shot, aren't they?

Why not simply get a hand flamer, you know, like this:

That sir... is awesome! O_o

Ok, I'm sold. Hand flamer it is I'll get to editing.

On the thunder hammer issue I found this on the 40k wiki:

"Lathe Pattern Thunder Hammer - The Lathe Pattern Thunder Hammer is a huge warhammer that features an oversized head. Like standard Thunder Hammers, these weapons store energy and then release it in a violent explosion upon impact. The tremendous concussive force released is equivalent to a concentrated grenade explosion, strong enough to punch holes in vehicles and knock those nearby to the ground. Though extremely cumbersome to wield, Lathe Pattern Thunder Hammers are often used by Adeptus Ministorum priests to both smite the wicked and invigorate the faithful. A Lathe Pattern Thunder Hammer is lighter than most other Imperial variants, and is intended for use by unaugmented humans."

Thought about it. I also think it is an awesome piece of gear, was really tempted to equip one, but adding an inv. save seemed a bit much. I don't think every priest has one, but an archbishop certainly could own one of those bad boys. I would like to pass that through the GM first for the OK. If I had one I wouldn't need the flak vest.

Yep, that's a melta / inferno pistol. Machairi has one.

Good character Thrannix, but I would request that he be reduced from an archbishop to a regular preacher / bishop, just because it would be odd for someone that important to be running around with a simple interrogator. You can keep the rest of his background - indeed, judging by her writing in the prologue, Machairi would probably respect his ability to choose faith over family and keep him around as a sort of aspirational figure.

I also think that an ancient weapon like that wouldn't be broken (Example, the Sword of Hieronymo Sondar is over 3,000 years old, and works better than current technology)

You are correct in that age is a completely different thing from ageing (effective maintenance is why there are so many oil rigs still operational in the north sea) but even though 40K plays the "ancient = better" trope ad absurdium, the very fact that it is often LOST technology means that maintaining it can be hard!

Also, I thought only bolters or other rifle-types could be combi-weaponed?

As has been pointed out before, don't fall into the trap of only acknowledging stuff that appears in the codices rather than the wider lore. All a combi-weapon requires really is some plausibility that it would be physically possible and a tech priest willing to build it.

And definitely don't apply the highly abstract 40K core rules to my lore-compliant yet realistic and logically consistent RPs! *ahem* ¬_¬

And what about a Rosarius? Not only is it badass, but it generates a refractor field. Every Ecclsiarchy priest has one, I think, as do most inquisitors.

I think it's just the higher up priests that get them (the ones who have demonstrated their commitment to the faith, and also need to worry about personal security). Similarly, it'd only be especially and openly pious inquisitors with strong connections to the ecclesiarchy who'd get gifted with one. I've sometimes wondered how the astartes chaplains got theirs - they might be the Emperor's holy angels of death and all, but someone must have noticed that they always omit the "god" part of the Emperor's name. Then again, the chaplaincy might have been something partially foisted on the astartes by the emerging ecclesiarchy, which they accordingly only pay lip service to.

dakkagor
03-07-2014, 01:31 PM
the chaplains actually predate the Ecclesiarchy by a considerable degree, and they where gifted the rosarius to show their 'strong link' to the emerging faith, which leads me to believe it was a propaganda stunt by the Ecclesiarchy to get the Space Marines on side. Bribe them with fancy toys and hopefully the genetically altered superhumans won't be quite so narked the secular empire they where building is turning into a theocracy.

My other personal theory is that a Chaplain saw a priest swanning around with a Rosarius, decided he wanted one too. He kicked down the Ecclesiarchs door and demanded one, and one for all his mates, at bolter point. To stop this happening the Ecclesiarchy created the frateris militia and the rest is history. . .

You can keep the rest of his background - indeed, judging by her writing in the prologue, Machairi would probably respect his ability to choose faith over family and keep him around as a sort of aspirational figure.

That might actually bring up a confrontation with Remus, he would probably relent. Actually probably is a rather loose term, he would relent. He values his life. He understands the cold logic behind it, but that doesn't mean he has to like it.

Late, because of recursive procrastination.

Name: "Lia"

Age: 16

Occupation: Gamma Class Psyker, sanctioned by Inquisitor [REDACTED]

Personality: Lia is a breath of fresh air compared to the often-dour demeanours of most Inquisition agents. Though usually quiet, she's bright and sometimes curious, and among those who find her good company (rather than irritating) her optimism can be infectious. Not being used to human interaction, she'll often miss social cues, though in some cases her perception will key her in that she shouldn't be talking at the moment.

Appearance: Lia is a small, slender girl with straight nut-brown hair and bright green eyes. She wears a simple outfit consisting of a black vest and loose trousers, sometimes throwing a slightly too-large jacket over top. She refuses to wear shoes.

Abilities: Lia's psychic powers are heavily influenced by having spent most of her young life on Settler's Bane, a world whose wildlife renders its Feral Ork infestation a "minor nuisance" in comparison. Much of her skill is in manipulating her own body, which she used as a primary survival skill. Through long (and sometimes frantic) practice she can render herself immune to just about any toxin and alter the density and physical properties of her body. She also has demonstrated the ability to metaphysically connect herself with objects that she is in contact with, allowing her to feel the object as if through proprioception. With this she can sense other beings in contact with the object (and who have had contact recently), allowing her to scout and track effectively. She can also spatially "lock" herself to the object at hand, attaching herself physically to it. She also displays a powerful telekinetic ability, but curiously is unable to project it; instead, she uses it to boost her movements, meaning she is far stronger than she appears.

Items:

Hellpistol: Lia often has to be reminded to bring this token weapon along with her. A weapon of the classic Lucius pattern, it is slightly too large for her hands especially with its expanded power pack. While proficient with it (though she handles it strangely) she rarely ends up using it, reasoning that it's more effective to just hurl things at her opponents.

Necklace: A thin but very tough chain hooks through a solid silver ring and a massively oversized canine to form this necklace. Lia wears it at nearly all times.

History: Lia came to the Inquisition's attention during an operation on Settler's Bane, after she had found and followed the team for some distance out of curiosity. She eagerly identified the team as Inquisition (quietly adding "I knew people like you would be coming...") and lent her assistance in navigating the death world. When the mission was complete, she insisted on being taken back with the team, though it was only because of a bureaucratic "mixup" that she narrowly escaped being sent to the Black Ships. Yet another "mixup" led her into the massive Inquisitorial organization of Immanuel Sidonis, where she begged, pleaded and punched a grown man through a bulkhead for a chance to work for the Inquisitor.

Lia was part of Interrogator Schaefer's team on Venatora, and proved herself an effective if somewhat erratic asset.

Perfect. And now we can begin.

As some of you may be aware, I'm not a fan of the cliche "briefing scene" at the start of inquisition RPs, so I'll keep this one short (also, it's more of a meet and greet...Machairi wants to see first hand who she's hiring and how well they'll mesh with her usual team). So I'm pretty easy about what your first posts consist of - anything that helps introduce and define the character, set at any point in the past or present, as long as they ultimately end up in the conference room.

Dakkagor, you can NPC Vincent and the Blacks if you need to, because they and Kally will presumably be arriving together.

That wouldn't have worked - remember the brief specified that the team are Machairi's most trusted henchmen, which a newbie couldn't possibly qualify for.

On a similar note, other writers may assume that Abdur speaks up after one of the new people (that is; Sapphira, Remus, Lia or Kally) walks in, as he presumably wouldn't be introducing himself to the people who already know him.

Well the post did say in several occasions that he felt unease and the feeling she would turn into a daemon or something along those lines. After all she has some dampening device on her that lessens the effect of her blank nature, If I'm not mistaken? I'm assuming she is seated too far from Solvan for him to feel anything at this point.

Thrannix has the right of it: Kally has a high quality limiter that means when its turned up to max she's merely unsettling.

I like to think of the pariah affect as working a lot like the uncanny valley, but its even more disturbing in some ways because its not running on visual cues.

Now the psychics, on the other hand. . . .

Azazeal849
03-12-2014, 11:45 AM
I like to think of the pariah affect as working a lot like the uncanny valley, but its even more disturbing in some ways because its not running on visual cues.

I've thought of it sometimes as that and sometimes as the sort of involuntary urge you get to keep your distance from someone with a visible disease. You could even say that the effect gets mentally filtered depending on the situation - for example, when Marc first met Kally he had a gut feeling that she couldn't be trusted, and there was a scene in Replicants when he was already stressed and blew up at her when he normally wouldn't have done.

I also think it's possible for non-psykers to "acclimatise" to (limiter-dampened) blanks, or at least to ones they know - think: if you had a friend with a serious disfigurement, after a while it wouldn't really bother you. To use Marc as an example again, this is why come Replicants he can "look at Kally and smile without having to force it", and even give her a hug at one point in Kaleidoscope.

Now the psychics, on the other hand. . . .

True. Again I've kind of assumed that it varies (just as psychic sight does). The last time a psyker character of mine saw one, I think I described it as a particularly nasty sort of vertigo - like a black hole that if they stared into it they felt like they were physically losing balance and falling into it. And for an astropath, for whom auras are the only way they can see people, a black hole where someone's soul should be must be pretty horrifying in and of itself.

Too bad that Alia seems to like keeping a lot of psykers on her staff (maybe its because she wants to see the future...)

Who was suppose to call Skip? You know Skip hate to miss all the fun!

Ix, you're still active? :O

Skip wouldn't work because of continuity issues (he'd still be in the Guard at this time, plus the only inquisitor he served with prior to A Wash of Black was Suffolk), but a different character wouldn't be totally unfeasible to accommodate.

How open would you say that has Solvan been about his past, at least within the Ecclesiarchy community? That could color Sapphira’s initial opinions about the bishop.

Well the events that led to the beginning of his work with the Inquisition would be common knowledge (at the very least there would be a rumor of him burning half his family for heresy). Certain other people, like inquisitors, have the power to sanction psykers (on at least a de facto basis, even if they don't file all the paperwork). Still, it is a valid question to ask both in and out of universe.

I'm glad you have such a black and white view of such things. You're going to have fun in this RP.

No, I just know how the imperium works.

lesser people would find it upsetting, but anyone who really matters (like inquisitors, IG generals, Astartes, Sororitas, The Lords of Terra, and so on) would think he did the right thing, no question

Burden of proof. Even in this schizophrenically tyrannical setting, people are still subject to the burden of proof. You don't just burn part of your family to death and get off with no questions by claiming they were heretics.

The need for proof is why the Inquisition conducts investigations before formally leveling charges. Same with the Arbites even if they do assume everyone is guilty of SOMETHING.

If there were no need for real justification, the Ecclesiarchy would be burning a lot more people to death.

There was an investigation, and they were, in fact, found to be part of a heretical cult.

The faceless, monolithic Imperium and the individual human beings who physically enact the Imperium's agenda are very different from one another. Sure, it's academic for macro level individuals like Inquisitors, Generals, and the Lords who in most cases issue orders from plush offices. It's perhaps not so simple for the underlings who are in the field doing the dirty work.

Just curious, why doesn't Sapphira have a bolter? I mean, I know she's technically a medic, but even the Sisters Hospitallers have bolters. I read in the book 'Warriors of Ultramar' that they have a special one that's like a badge of honor or something. I forget her name and the name of the thing, and this is just a question, not a criticism or anything.

Something that it's very important for you to appreciate Cfavano is that the Imperium (and the 40K universe as a whole) is not homogeneous - there are very few facts anywhere in the background where you can definitively say "this is true everywhere in the Imperium". The 40K fluff is more about examples than absolutes.

So while a certain Sister in Warriors of Ultramar had a bolter, it doesn't necessarily mean that all Sisters Hospitaller do. If you think about it, it wouldn't make much sense anyway - because although some Hospitallers are combat medics, the organisation as a whole operates more like a charity (although, knowing the Sisterhood, most likely with some quiet genetic / purity checking of all their patients on the side as well).

Hell, there's no reason why some Orders Militant out there might not even use bolters (maybe there's no forge worlds nearby) and make do with flak and las. The Sisters are defined far more by their ideology than by the weapons they use.

really? I never saw it like that. I figured that all sisters were trained soldiers, then everything else second. And that they were given like, the best, since they're the Military arm of the Ordo Hereticus, just like the Astartes are always given the best, regardless wherever they go or are (never see a company captain wearing flak armor, do you?)

but, first and formost, it is your world, and I don't really by comparison know that much.

I've never read Cain, Eisohorn, Ravenor, or most of the novels. I've only read one Gaunt Omnibus and one Ultramarines Omnibus, and lexicanum. SO, that's really all I know, and believe it or not I am learning and willing to learn more.

Also, your last line made me LOL because isn't their sign of the cross equivalent something like 'By the Bolter, and the Flamer, and the Melta, Amen' or something like that?

really? I never saw it like that. I figured that all sisters were trained soldiers, then everything else second.

For the militant orders, yes they are (and they're the ones featured most prominently in the wargame for obvious reasons, so it's a forgivable mistake). But you also have many non-combat orders; like the orders famulous who advise and purity check the Imperial ruling class, the orders dialogous who translate and archive, the orders sabine who work as missionaries, and the orders pronatus who look after holy relics. None of these would be expected to fight on a regular basis...although they can easily call up the people who do.

And that they were given like, the best, since they're the Military arm of the Ordo Hereticus

Technically, they're the military arm of the ecclesiarchy (due to some loophole abuse of the Decree Passive) but they very often work with the Hereticus because their remits are very similar.

just like the Astartes are always given the best, regardless wherever they go or are (never see a company captain wearing flak armor, do you?)

I can't say I have yet. But I have seen plenty of scenes in BL stories where marines fight without their guns and armour (usually after being captured, or during some sort of ritual), and the lack of their signature equipment doesn't diminish their literary badassery in any way.

Also, your last line made me LOL because isn't their sign of the cross equivalent something like 'By the Bolter, and the Flamer, and the Melta, Amen' or something like that?

Yes (though, again, this is the creed of the militant orders rather than the Hospitaller). Although that said, I don't think being caught without a bolter would cause a Sister to slack off in punishing any heretics who were stupid enough to parade around in front of her.

I wrote a piece (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?217962-Hearts-of-Darkness-IC&p=4084081&viewfull=1#post4084081) myself once where a marine dropped his bolter in favour of a lasgun and still managed to kick ass (admittedly, he was an ultra-pragmatic Night Lord...and he was dual wielding them :D).

Cfavano

I recall a story kinda similar to that, a Loyalist marine headshotted a chaos marine, and blew the guy's head clean off, helmet and all, with a single shot from a standard lasgun.

My partial out of character answer is that it’d be unfair to have a bolt weapon and a plasma pistol. Of course Sapphira has an in character rationale for her gear as well. Abdur is more than welcome to ask about if he’s curious.

Hi Levhitor - I'm really sorry but the current team is getting very full and I think I'm going to have to put a cap on recruitment for now. However, I will send you a message straight away if a space becomes available. In the meantime, please check out Atrum Daemon's adeptus mechanicus RP The Silent Forge (http://role-player.net/forum/showthread.php?t=55308) which is currently light on players and would be the perfect place for an explorator. You could also try submitting a similarly themed character to Dakkagor's Wreckage (http://role-player.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56856) (not 40K, but centres around a salvage ship where a tech-focused explorer character wouldn't be out of place).

The loophole is literally that the decree states that the Ecclesiarchy cannot raise MEN to fight for them, therefore the Sisters did not have to disband. One of my favorite bits of politicking in the setting, personally.

Name: Sebastian Thor

Age: 34

Occupation: Field Medic / Xeno Researcher

Personality: Growing up Sebastian was a fidgety child, never able to stay focused on one task for more than fifteen minutes at a time. Now that he has found a passion for all things medical, he thinks of nothing else. Most people who meet him think he is trying to keep his focus when he starts chewing on his pencils, when in reality that is his way of showing just how focused he truly is on the matter at hand.

Appearance: Sebastian is tall lanky male, standing at 6’ 3” and as thick as a stick. He did get toned while attending basic training and has kept up with a basic workout routine since. He has short cropped blonde hair and keeps his face clear of facial hair. He has stunning green eyes and a nice bronze skin tone. He keeps is nails trimmed as best he can, but tends to forget about them when he gets caught up in his research. Sebastian tends to wear relaxed slacks and a simple shirt with his combat boots. The one thing he actually liked from basic training. He tends to wear his white lab coat as an outer jacket which has resulted in the lab coat becoming more grey than white.

Equipment:
+ Medical servo-skull that he pieced together using equipment salvaged from servo-skulls that he found in disrepair. Since none of the skulls were usable he ended up sticking everything in to the skull of an over grown alley cat. As such, he has begun calling the servo-skull “Fluffy”.
+ Sebastian carries two surgical scalpels, kept razor sharp.
+ Standard Imperial Guard medical field kit.
+ Accatran Pattern Mk IV Lasgun.

History:
Sebastian was born and raised on Harnia Tersias in the hive known as Valley. Valley was named as such due to being located in the valley separating the two largest mountain ranges on the planet. Having an IN officer for a father and a warehouse manager for a mother Sebastian grew up in the outskirts of the hive near the spaceport. Growing up Sebastian couldn’t focus on anything for more than fifteen minutes, as his mother put it. In hopes of bringing some peace to his mind Sebastian’s mother ensured that he attended Church on a regular basis, no less than three times a week. His father was hardly around, serving in the Imperial Navy, so he spent little time with him. When Sebastian was thirteen his mother failed to show up at home after her night shift at the warehouse. He found out later that day that no one from the warehouse that was working that night, and the surrounding blocks it was located in were accounted for. Everyone had simply vanished in the dark. After this Sebastian was sent to live with an aunt and uncle on the other side of the hive. His aunt and uncle not being as pious as Sebastian’s mother, he slowly drifted away from the Church, though he did keep up with his prayers. His lack of being able to focus got worse after his mother’s disappearance and he became more adept at running away from problems after he started to get in to fights at school, no longer being privately tutored.

When Sebastian reached the age of eighteen and had no papers filed showing his intent to attend a program of higher learning he was immediately drafted in to the Imperial Guard. He had trouble adjusting to the rigors of training, mainly he had trouble focusing on the assignments he was given. His father recently back in system soon learned about the troubles Sebastian was having and started working to get his son out of the service. This took the better part of a year and by the time the arrangements were made Sebastian was graduating from Medic training. On the day Sebastian received his certificate proclaiming him a qualified field medic he also received the news that he had been discharged and was unceremoniously removed from the base.

Having enjoyed the medical training Sebastian quickly applied to the Schola-Biogois in hopes of earning a degree in as a doctor. For the first time in his life Sebastian found something that he could focus on and truly felt alive. He soon received sponsorship to the schola and began his training. Much to the surprise of his instructors, Sebastian showed great aptitude to research, especially when he was taken in to the field. The one thing that they did not like was all the pencils Sebastian kept chewing through, though they struggled to overlook it.

Nearing the end of his final year Sebastian was searching for a topic he could write up for his last dissertation paper. In regular contact with his father he had learned of a rumor detailing an unknown virus appearing at the shipyards on Delgoria III. Sebastian quickly set to work to equip himself for some field research, but lacked the funds to purchase anything new. He went to the labs and gathered what broken servo-skulls he could find that wouldn’t be missed, or that had been labeled already for disposal and set to work on building his own servo-skull. With none of the skulls being usable he acquired a large feline skull from the biology lab and did the best he could to cobble together a working servo-skull. The results were far less than perfect, but what he had was usable, and “Fluffy” was born. He then secured passage to Delgoria III on a small system patrol vessel scheduled for maintenance, as payment he agreed to serve as medic if needed. Unfortunately, as Sebastian later reflected, the trip was uneventful.

Once he disembarked from the vessel Sebastian quickly found an apartment complex looking for onsite medical staff and was hired on without delay. As part of his deal he received the right to live in the complex at no cost. Sebastian has spent all of his free time researching the new virus, setting up a clean room in the unused bedroom of his apartment, spending any income on needed supplies and spending as much time in the Eastern docks collecting what samples he can as well as speaking to anyone willing detail what they were doing before and after showing signs of the virus. What Sebastian did not take in to consideration was how the virus came in to being; and the truth awoke him to a whole new world. The next year saw Sabastian grow in to a survivor as he chased down the cause of the virus, encountering a Xeno, who over time he believed to behind the virus, though he was never able to prove it. Eventually his path crossed that of Alia Machairi and her team; taking a chance, Machairi recruited Sebastian. Still shaken from his encounter with the unknown Xeno, he did not argue, even when she demanded that he undergo rigorous combat training to ensure that he would not be left behind on a mission.

I believe the virus reference is because the character was originally written to fit in with previous RP A Wash of Black, which had a mechanicus-manufactured plague as a plot point. So yes, I suppose a Resident Evil connection can be drawn.

Questions of Machairi aren't mandatory - it's just a test both in character and out to make sure I've set the scene adequately. well, as a scout and all, Abdur would need familiarity with the terrain and important people (in case he's ordered to assassinate anyone, in his line of work, that happens), so he's definitely going to ask for files on all important people and on the planet itself. He's then going to lock himself in his quarters until he memorizes everything.

Ooh, I know what could be fun! To get on the planet stealthily...grav-chute insertion!

So that way the enemy won't know we're here! (I kid, of course, but it would be fun!)

dakkagor

Surely, them knowing we are there (as Rogue Traders looking to cut a deal) makes more sense, as we can then tap into peoples assets to complete the mission.

Azazeal849
03-19-2014, 11:23 AM
As Dakkagor says. Although, I will reveal that there are a couple of points in the story where you might, possibly, be required to jump out of an aircraft via grav-chute.

Don't Nikolai and Raechel from The Silent Forge count?

Cfavano

I thought raechel was like, an assistant or acolyte or something, not a full-fleged more machine than man techpriest.

Azazeal849
03-19-2014, 03:13 PM
She's a fully qualified priest; she just hasn't been working long enough to "earn" (or medically require) many bionics. I've also often wondered about different schools of thought within the mechanicus regarding emulating the machine ("The flesh is weak") without becoming slaves to it ("The soul is the conscience of sentience"). Raechel leans somewhat further towards the latter than is commonly depicted, but it makes her interesting to write about.

Is anyone else planning on posting questions? If not I'll get to work on the first plot mover.

Atrum Daemon

She's got that in common with Vizkop in that she still looks human despite being an ordained techpriest and having served for a number of years. Yes, Vizkop still holds to Ad Mech tenants such as placing almost zero value on human life but when you aren't desensitized to annihilating entire planets, it can still screw with you.

Yeesh, such acid. Who knew Vizkop would be so sensitive. XD

It's one thing to defend a flaw that only one person sees, but to get offended at the mention of a flaw that all operators of said weapons know?

But that's just him being cranky.

I also was unaware that plasma weapons used ammo, really. I mean, I know the plasmagun and plasmacannon in Space Marine had limited ammo, but I figured that was just because they were main and heavy weaponry, respectively, plus the plasmacannon had unlimited ammo when on it's stand, as did the Plasma Pistol (although, the bolt pistol did, too XD )

You learn something new every day.

And I too am ready to go.

I didn't say like tinkering with it XD

I meant like, different ways of holding it, and such.

Although, perhaps wiring Frag missiles to be an IED might tick him off. Or purposely causing a weapon, generator, or reactor to overload to use as a bomb.

But, such is life in his line of work

Atrum Daemon
03-20-2014, 12:17 AM
Improved explosives and such, if they are necessary, don't bother him so much. He'd care far less about someone futzing with grenades unsanctioned than he would someone futzing with a less common piece of weapon tech. And it's quite possible he misheard Abdur or took his words too literal.

In all fairness, it really did read like Abdur was implying he could tinker with a plasma weapon. Particularly the 'as well as ways to get round some of their defects' section of that dialogue.

Cfavano
03-20-2014, 12:41 AM
well, yeah. When you live on a desert planet and have weapons that tend to overheat, you get REAL familiar with how they work.

New post. Erased the last part of my previous post, I'll save it and adjust it for later. Let's see if Solvan gets burned, now that would be ironic. XD

On the Abdur Vizkop issue. I think Vizkop had enough reason to get mad. But Solvan doesn't really care all that much for machines and the Omnissiah.

Cfavano
03-20-2014, 12:58 AM
Makes sense.

Maybe Vizkop and Abdur can have a chat. And he can tell Vizkop what it's like being hundreds of miles behind enemy lines, knowing full well that you're alone, and if captured, there's no chance of rescue, and your very existence will be denied.

Just curious, I mentioned Grav-chute insertion earlier, and Az said tht, at some point, we might do that. Other than Abdur and Remus, does anyone else know how to USE one, let alone know what they are?

Atrum Daemon
03-20-2014, 03:32 AM
Vizkop is a deep-cover assassin. He knows full well what it's like to be among the enemy with absolutely zero chance of support.

And I would like to point out that grav-chute insertion is very dangerous and could very kill everyone if even one small thing goes wrong. It'd be safer to simply land in one of the more friendly areas and move on from there rather than risk everyone's live using grav-chutes.

Cfavano
03-20-2014, 04:01 AM
No no, he said that at some point we may have to do that to get into an area. We're landing normally now.

I'd also like to say that Vizkop was probably armed to the teeth with the best the mechanicus has, while Abdur...is a guardsman. I hope no one's forgotten that. He was recruited from the Ranks of the IG itself, and was not an original Inq agent.

To put it into perspective (at least, how I see)

Vizkop: T-800 (Terminator) or perhaps the T-X (girl terminator from 3 )

Abdur: Rambo (I know that it's the Catachans that are the Rambo-ites, I just could not think of an arabic stealthy action hero off of the top of my head XD)

Atrum Daemon
03-20-2014, 05:02 AM

Cfavano
03-20-2014, 05:30 AM
Well, what I mean is, he has access to much better gear and supplies, being backed by the admech and all.

All Abdur had was the rinky-dink Ministorum. One time, they sent his entire regiment the wrong size power cells for their lasrifles! They had to scrounge and make do with old one, and conserve the ones they had until they got another shipment.

PaintSerf

well, yeah. When you live on a desert planet and have weapons that tend to overheat, you get REAL familiar with how they work.

No doubt they do, although that does beg the question of why the Tallarn would choose plasma as a favored weapon. I suspect it was arbitrarily assigned as most other preferred weapons from the old 3rd or 4th edition Guard codex were.

Although overheats are likely to be as frequent in Tallarn regiments as any other regiment, since Guard units are more often sent to wherever they’re needed for raw bodies rather than where they would be most useful.

Sorry that I had to skip that original section. I just wanted that damn long intro post up, and I suspected Solvan would have something to say after Sapphira spoke up. The dynamic between them should be interesting, at the very least.

Vizkop is a deep-cover assassin. He knows full well what it's like to be among the enemy with absolutely zero chance of support.

And that’s precisely why Sapphira will ask Vizkop for pointers on disguises – after I finish my post for Silent Forge, of course.

They favor the Plasmagun and the Missile launcher because they deal crippling blows with every shot, and are easy to transport.

The main battle strategy of the Tallarn desert raiders is to suddenly appear, cripple the enemy, and then disappear from where they came from. They also favor Scout Sentinels, and also use rough riders.

Though they do have armored and artillery companies, even their armored companies are stealthy.

They are also excellent marksmen, and use specialized lasguns that are longer and more fluid in shape.

I'll let players decide among themselves how they're going to go about disguising themselves, but as you pointed out IC rogue traders aren't expected to blend in and a diverse crew is likely to raise eyebrows but probably not alarm bells.

Eh, unfortunately we can't create energy or matter out of thin air (at best, you're pulling it out of another dimension like the Warp), even in the 40K universe. So all weapons are going to have finite ammo, in some respect. As for plasma weapons, for as long as I've played 40K it's always been in the background that their ammo is "flasks" of liquid or gas that are depleted as the gun fires. The fuel is energised into a high-temperature ionised gas, and then ejected. I also assume that there is some sort of techno-wank electromagnetic field or "tunnel" holding the gas together, for the following reasons:

Without it, the plasma would disperse like steam (and be a really rubbish, short range weapon)
An oppositely charged field stops the (charged) plasma gas coming into contact with the barrel of the plasma gun and melting it
It explains why plasma batteries are longer range in BFG - the field can be manipulated, and thus the bolts can be "guided" (not applicable to handheld plasma weapons, as the travel time to target is only a fraction of a second)
It explains the Ulumaethi plasma siphon - this weapon obviously interferes with the EM field

So in summary: limited ammo, flask magazines, EM, and only the third isn't explicitly canon. It probably won't come up, but this is my personal canon which I would like to be used in this RP. :>

He got offended that someone outside the priesthood claimed to be able to perform unsanctioned work on rare and valuable weapons. If he sees it happen, it's a whole different story.

In all fairness, it really did read like Abdur was implying he could tinker with a plasma weapon. Particularly the 'as well as ways to get round some of their defects' section of that dialogue.

Which is why Machairi tried to head off the confrontation by explaining that all the "tricks" Abdur learned were sanctioned by his regiment's tech priests (you're free to speculate that she might have been lying).

Although, perhaps wiring Frag missiles to be an IED might tick him off. Or purposely causing a weapon, generator, or reactor to overload to use as a bomb.

Knowing how to make IEDs, or perhaps more importantly, knowing the sort of places where people tend to put them will no doubt be useful in a war-torn city.

well, yeah. When you live on a desert planet and have weapons that tend to overheat, you get REAL familiar with how they work.

I'd be less worried about the heat than the sand. Sand and dust plays havoc with all kinds of equipment and makes it break down far more often.

Vizkop: T-800 (Terminator) or perhaps the T-X (girl terminator from 3 )

Abdur: Rambo (I know that it's the Catachans that are the Rambo-ites, I just could not think of an arabic stealthy action hero off of the top of my head XD)

Sinbad?

If by "armed to the teeth" you mean "given a photo of the target with the word KILL stamped across it" then yes. XD

The scary thing? I bet that photo is all he needs to get the job done.

All Abdur had was the rinky-dink Ministorum. One time, they sent his entire regiment the wrong size power cells for their lasrifles! They had to scrounge and make do with old one, and conserve the ones they had until they got another shipment.

Worse cock-ups have happened in real life. If anything, the problems the Munitorium have are more realistic than the settings where the writers just wave their hands and say "Eh, the logistics just work, man!"

They favor the Plasmagun and the Missile launcher because they deal crippling blows with every shot, and are easy to transport.

Makes sense, although the high maintenance requirements of plasma guns might be an issue when you're trying to get from A to B rapidly. At the end of the day, I'm going to let individual players pick what they want to take with them to Hercynia. Barring the occasional plot-relevant misfire, jam or ammo shortage (which I may enforce...we'll see), I'm of the opinion that the weapons a character carries matter far less in a creative writing setting than in a more rules-based RP.

Though they do have armored and artillery companies, even their armored companies are stealthy.

Stealthy tanks? I think I can hear the "tactical genius Creed" meme approaching. Rapid surprise attacks (tanks are fast) and ambushes (you can hide them) I could understand though.

Right, time to write a plot mover... *Cracks knuckles and pours coffee*

I could do that. I'm working on my post now. Is there anyone who wants in, or should I just leave it so you can respond to it in your posts? his 'seminar' is going to last the entire trip and includes lectures, demonstrations, and exercises. Should be, on my end, probably at least five paragraphs.
