Steam 'n' Ragnar rock!

[Prologue]

At that moment it began five years ago.
The emperor known only by his single name 'Echo' rose to power after the great renegades of the north came crashing down with their fierce steam-powered juggernauts. The amount of firepower brought to the field on their side was nothing of what this world had ever seen before.
Their machines were at least six men high, and four man wide. And along with their gating guns and grenade rifles little of what our nation had could stand up to them.
Swords and arrows were completely useless against their unstoppable might, and our only line of defense came from our catapults and our cannons that soon were blasted into oblivion. It was what would be called 'the perfect assault' they came... And they conquered almost without losses.
The army we had would soon be broken, their morale shattered and soon they would rout.
In the meantime the armies of Echo would take hold of of our capital and behead the king along with his closest servants without mercy.

After that they would force the peoples surrender, and as none could stand up to their superior technology many would quickly fall into line. Then as time passed and after many promises of how things would improve people again started living their daily lives while trying to forget that we once was lead by someone else. We were a conquered people, but we still had our lives and what freedom our new leader would grant us which was not much less than our king before him, so matters stand that not much have changed other than that our own army do not exist and that the Renegades of the north do whatever they want with our land and our people.
The question remain thought,
why would they conquer our land and our people?
What do we have that they do not?
The answer is simple, they want our land because its vast and rich on resources. And they want our people because we have a rare talent among us that they do not.

What we have they want... Because we, we have magic....

[Chapter one: Ashes...And Stashes]

And so Tuesday the second arrived, it was the day when the peddler from out of town came into the city with goods he had brought from outside the empire. And many eyes peered from their wooden window down the road outside to the wide road that lead from the town to the gate and out into the wilderness. Many was waiting eager to see what goods that would became available to them that didn't simply exist here any longer. Yet everyone knew that the event was observed carefully by the eyes of the emperor for the slightest hints of magic, and all mages whom was spotted would be imminently caught and brought before the emperor. During the five years that had passed most of the known mages had perished either by the hands of the emperor or because of by means of their own choice. The emperor fear magic, and would quickly cast down those even showing hints of it, and those who didn't obey to serve him would be killed.

And so in the distance he came, a lonesome cart rolling down the road dragged by a single workhorse. A Young man maybe in his thirties would be sitting at the front to drive the cart, while chewing on some tobacco and occasionally spitting in a pot. He was a strange man indeed, physically fit and much on the muscular side, wearing a double vest and cotton pants he could pass for a workman in the fields or one whom worked with their hands. On his head he wore a coif, making him look somewhat like a smith, yet it didn't' remove the fact that he indeed was a peddler. The peddler was the only one allowed to leave the emperors land, mostly because nobody else was trusted to return if they were allowed to leave freely, and partly because he always seemed to bring the most curious of goods from far and vide.
