Congratulations graduate,
First off, let me congratulate you on your graduation earlier this month – your test results have been satisfactory for you to join our society in Toronto, one of the few major cities and save heavens in North America. As you know, each member is born nameless, assigned only the standard XXXX code with their own personal identification number. The guilds, your teachers, your parents and all members of society started to watch you and guide you since your early days, honing out your potential and determining where you would fit in. At 5, 9, 13 and 16 you received a new part of your code significant as to where you most likely would fit in. Now, 18 years after your birth, you have finally been given a real name, a name to call your own. No matter what you choose or what happens to you, wear it proudly and bring honor to those who bore it before you.
I am pleased to say that you have been selected to join this year’s group of Alpha trainees, an opportunity to train and join the Alphas that guard our city. This is a big honor and not to be taken without consideration for it is easy to be blinded by the prestige and glory that we associate with being an Alpha. It is hard and tedious work, emotionally and physically draining, full of pain and death. Fear is a constant factor in our line of work but fear is what keeps us alive. Training will consist of two parts – physical and psychological lead by the finest instructors in the field.
Should you pass the training, you will be assigned into a two year internship program with one of the Alpha groups, rotating between scout and patrol. Your pack members will deem your worth once the two years are up – if they deem that you are a true Alpha, you will pledge to the Guild and become a full member of Toronto’s Alpha Pack. If at any point, your performance is deemed unsatisfactory or your attitude is deemed inappropriate for an Alpha, you will be removed from the program and your punishment will be determined by the inner-city Guild Council.
We expect your answer within three days after which, if there is no answer, you will be removed from guild and re-evaluated into another guild (excluding Gamma) that will contact you with their own rules and regulations. Do be aware, becoming an Alpha is a privilege and the Alpha guild can terminate its offer at any time unlike the other Guilds. City protection is not to be taken lightly, please understand this when making your decision.
After your acceptance, we will send you full rules, expectations, additional information, training schedule and contract that you are expected to bring, signed, when you sign in at the Head Quarters.
All the Best,
Juliet Deware, Head of Alpha Training
AAAA932
This is the letter you have received almost 3 years ago. Much has changed since then, much that you never anticipated. You didn’t think that you’d fail when you took up the challenge. Training passed, good for some, painful for others but none the less, you labored away at the physical and mental alike under the watchful, ever evaluating eyes of Juliet Deware. Some of you have passed – out of the 200 invited to join the Alphas, only 50 managed to end up being placed as a trainee in an Alpha pack. Others were returned to their original placements, training to become the best in their discipline, applying what they learned in the Alpha introduction to advance ever quicker through your studies.
That was about two years ago, a little less. You have never intended to end up in the cages, awaiting your punishment. And when they left you alone for a few days, there was so much what went through your head, so much that no one will ever know: perhaps it made you stronger, perhaps it started to drive you mad, maybe it simply started to break you, reducing you to desperation. You knew the law as well as anyone – all violations of the laws deem exile outside the city walls and permanent banishment from the city. So as you sat there in your cell, you waited for what was truly about to come.
However, fate seems to have so many twists. When you finally stood the Council, you were given a choice. No one ever gets a choice but, unknown to the world, some do. Strong ones, warriors and survivors, those who have seen death and felt pain – those just like you. And the choice is simple really, more of a joke: try to survive the Wild as is or become part of the Gamma experiments. For some reason, something forces you to become a specimen, to join the program easily nicknamed “Fauna”, a dedication to the ancient Greek Goddess…or was she Roman? You don’t really care – no one ever survives the Wild and you are desperate to take any advantage you can to survive. Even temp death.
You wake up in a hospital bed, lights glaring and some masked doctor leaning over you, asking you to blink. He mumbles something about your eyes or teeth but you are too drained to care what the details are. Beside him, an assistant it scribbling away on their notepad, frowning and fumbling with the stylus and their latex gloves. All you just want to do is sleep – you don’t feel any different – but the doctor keeps asking you to do something, to move this or that, look here, stick out your tongue. You obey as you were always taught to do but the second he’s gone, you tumble back into oblivion.
In a week, you are moved to a room with three others. You have seen them around – they were Alpha trainees too. The doctors are asking more now and the tests are getting stranger: distinguish under which cup a carrot is based on smell, calculate how big an object is based on hearing, withstand as much heat or cold as you possibly can. You follow instructions but it makes you wonder. Eventually, they move you to a dorm, heavily guarded and the tests become a lot more physical – balance, agility, stamina. Some are easy, some are hard as they usually are but the doctors seem pleased. You don’t know why for you are never told the results.
In two months, you are finally sentenced to be exiled – the experiment was a success. You are lost for you have no clue whether the experiment helped you or not, have no idea what it even was. The doctors all seem satisfied though and praise you each time they see you but you aren’t any different, are you? Did the society lie? You don’t know – all you know is that you are now standing before the heavy outside doors leading into the Wild, the same doors you have once entered with excitement alongside your pack members, the doors that hold your doom. Twelve of you are exiled today, twelve facing their destiny. And all you have for protection is your knowledge, your training and the hypothetical experiment that may have worked.
Welcome to the Portolage
The Portolage
The Portolage is an event that happened in 2254 C.E. and marks the epiphany of human kind, the tip of the mountain before humanity took 10, 000 steps back, starting down the slippery slope. The United World Research and Development in Science (UWRADS for short) has made a breakthrough in their long, seemingly hopeless experiment – recreate living organisms from historical DNA, making their cognitive abilities as close as possible to those of human. The hope was to one day be able to restore the greatest minds of the past to work on solving problems such as hunger, diseases and other social issues.
The experiment – named “Castling“– focused on recreating the unique abilities of the human brain that diversify a common man from any other creature capable of thought on Earth which bringing back to life prehistoric predators, mainly from the Pleistocene era, as the physical brain size of these large creatures was roughly the same as those of humans and skulls were big enough to grow an enhanced cerebral cortex, closely resembling those of humans. Earlier versions of the experiment included work with prehistoric prey but were unsuccessful. The animals continued to be bred and genetically modified to provide more nutritious meat, effectively adding a small solution to the food shortages around the world.
The animals, kept in tight quarters, constantly supervised and restrained by the latest technology available, were being genetically modified and enhanced to show signs (early stages) and later on full comprehension of the following concepts: Humor, Appreciation of beauty, Self-consciousness, Awareness of death, Understanding time, Connections between words, Meaning of life, Malleability, Lack of harmony with nature, A sense of morality, Character, Free moral agency, Capacity for wisdom, Desire for worship and Love.
Although Castling was only a partial success, it was the beginning of the end. While the predators displayed most of the cognitive features of men, UWRADS continued to treat the subjects as simple, dumb organisms driven by desire instead of adapting to the newly formed individuals. Frustration grew within the captives all over the world, species separated and recreated in UWRADS’ labs corresponding to their original territory (North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia), slowly the creatures becoming more aggressive. However, it wasn’t until the first casualty that the end really began.
On December 15th, 2254, young scientist Robert Abernell was killed during a standard, daily session with a beardog in the North American lad near Vancouver, Western Canada State. No one ever understood what exactly had passed between Robert and experiment 408 nicknamed “Teddy” but no one in UWRADS was willing to risk other employees being destroyed by the apex predator.
Experiment 666 was immediately disposed and all would have been well if a passing smilodon, led by its handlers back from a medical procedure hadn’t witnessed the event. The news caused an uproar within the holding pens and that night, the North American rebel began. All experiments broke out of their confinement, killing humans and destroying the lab. Escaping into the wild, they started attacking villages and towns, vicious and merciless. Unprepared for such an attack, humanity was hit by surprise. By February 11th, 2255, only six cities remained in North America.
The news spread like wildfire and experiments saw it as their chance for freedom and for vengeance – on December 20th, the same containment breach occurred in the southern continent, on December 23rd Asia saw mass destruction, December 28th and 29th marked the downfall of the African and European labs respectively. Finally, on January 15th, Australia was the last to fall.
Within a year, humanity was reduced to only 24 cities still standing, the animals taking over the majority of the land. The human world was in ruins – knowledge, science, weapons and much more was lost or destroyed, the blueprints damaged or resources lacking. Both sides made a truce, staying in their own zones to allow for lick their wounds and restore some order. Since then, the fauna has bloomed, becoming stronger and more dangerous. Humanity too has changed and survived but it is no longer the dominant species, unable to expand into the land it once called its own. And that is how the age of the Partolage began.
The Council
In 2352, the delegated leaders of the 24 remaining cities left met together in New York as by then, it was the most rebuild city in the human realm, having built up the first wall and successfully expanding beyond its original bounds as survivors had flocked to it during the years following the Partolage. In New York, after two months of discussion, the Society was created.
The Council became the governing body within the system. Each of the 24 sectors would nominate a lead specialist, each residing in a different city. They would meet once a year to discuss rules that are to be imposed worldwide including security standards, resources allocated towards each sector, tests determining placement of new Society members and ect.
Similarly, each independent city had a council. World Council Members were not allowed to be part of the city councils, instead asking as voices of reasons. The way the council works is simple: all 24 members have equal votes at times of peace. In times of crisis, the council member(s) in whose sector(s) the crisis falls under, would have more authority but upon aversion, the council returns to equal votes and rights. Example, during an epidemic, the Delta leader would have more authority but during an internal revolt, the Beta leader.
The Society
The way the society works is that within each city, there are 24 sectors, each following the Greek alphabet letters. Each sector or “guild” is responsible for a certain area ranging from doctors to transportations to education to internal and external security. The guilds are as follows:
• Alpha - External scouts and wall protection, this is the elite force of any city and the first ones to take arms against the Megabeasts. The Alphas are broken down into “packs” of 10, rotating on weekly (or biweekly depending on city) shifts between wall duty and scouting. The training of new members is starts with a year of physical and psychological training followed by two years as a trainee with one of the packs.
• Beta - Internal police, this is the force that deals with most human against human conflict. During revolts, unrest or simply street crime within the wall boundaries, the Beta teams of 5 deal with those problems. Training resembles the Alpha one except trainees have only one year of being part of a team before becoming (usually) a full pledged Beta.
• Gamma - Military Engineering and Science, these are as elite as the Alphas but more known for focusing their research and experiments into fighting the Wild. In a way, they are the remains of UWRADS, playing around with anything that would give them an advantage. In New York, the Gamma’s are running “Fauna”, a secret project rumored to be dwelling back into genetics and alterations. Some even say it has reached human experimentation.
• Delta – Doctors and Surgeons, they are the ones to operate, diagnose and heal. Education varies depending on individual, ranging usually 4 – 6 years after graduation and another 2 – 4 years of practice. Young doctors are supervised first few months.
• Epsilon – Engineers, they invent anything from basic cutlery to advanced machinery. There are many subgroups within this guild and new members specialize after 4 years.
• Zeta – Justice, the members of these sector are level-headed and run the courts that determine the fate of individuals. They are responsible for keeping the laws of the Society available to all, counselling those who are on edge with those laws and determining boundaries between sectors if disputes arise.
• Eta – Education, the people in this sector prepare the potential members of society from their earliest age (usually 1 or 2 years). Most become a second family to the kids they mentor. Knowledgeable in all fields, a teacher is usually given a class when the kids are 6 years of age and sees them through until graduation. These teachers also help determine future suitability (codes) while caregivers focus of early development of those 5 and under. Caregivers, unlike the teachers, rotate groups every six months to allow for more diverse development.
• Theta – Architecture, this sector is responsible for coming up with new innovations, renovating old buildings, demolishing those unsalvageable and building new buildings in its stead. A special subgroup exists to ensure the security of the wall. All manual labor is performed by the Distilled.
• Iota – Electricity, the guild responsible for constantly providing power to the city but more importantly, the walls as most walls have electric barriers alongside physical and other modes of protection. Members of this guild undergo extensive training for three years before starting with small projects, eventually working of power plants and water mills.
• Kappa – Communications, from radio to television, verbal announcements in needed places and town squares to establishing connections between cities. Kappas work closely with all other sectors and sometimes, tend to pick up little skills here and there. They can build a radio and transmitter from almost any material – actually, that usually is the final test for fresh trainees.
• Lambda – Logistics, this sector is the one that deals with the distribution of resources, mostly human in the form of the Distilled. The Distilled are those members of cities who were unable to become part of the Society during graduation and resort to doing the manual labor of the city. Lambdas assign jobs, take care of organizing meals, lodging and time off.
• Mu - Nutrition Science, the focus of this sector is to find innovative ways to sustain the ever marginally increasing population of the city through food mutation (anti-freeze corn, pesticide free crops, ect) as well as determining the correct balance of vitamins and minerals. They are the ones who also determine whether each food is eatable and allowed to be offered to the citizens of the city.
• Nu - Nurses and Medics, these are assistants to the Doctors, the staff that run hospitals and the newborn wing. Nurses focus mainly on hospital duties, anything from giving out daily medication to minor injuries when all doctors are busy. Medics focus on immediate assistance and transportation of patience to hospitals. Both have similar training to Doctors although the time needed to have practice is shortened to 2 years.
• Xi – Transportation, the sector focuses on both internal and external transportation. Creation, innovation, engineering, development and maintenance are all major parts of the sector, forming the subdivisions. Figuring out where to lay tracks, providing service on all vehicles and researching new fuel solutions also fall under Xi.
• Omicron - Production and Factories, the workers here focus on producing all items used within the city, adapting to the environment in which the city is located. Machine supervision, maintenance, ect are all part of the Omicron field.
• Pi - Pharmacy and Drugs, this guild is the one to focus on producing the most efficient medication. Training is very similar to those of Nurses and Medics however, supervision is constant for two years after full pledging.
• Rho – Religion, separates into many sub sectors, each representing a certain religion. New members must become familiar and in tune with all before specializing in one. The priests here act as guides to lost souls, unjudging and bringing hope. They are the ones to perform all ceremonies of naming, baptising (if needed), marriage, divorce and funerals.
• Sigma – Scientists, they focus on researching and developing more global things unlike specialized sectors (i.e. Xi). Sigma all about progress and recovering past knowledge however experiments are never as wild as those of Gamma nor are their facilities and possibilities as great.
• Tau – Textiles, they come up with new materials and fabrics. Fashion and clothing, repair and durability, waterproof or enhanced, this sector is responsible for all things from creation to production. Military uniforms are also created here by the Gamma designs.
• Upsilon - Electrical and Software engineering, they run all the electronic systems and programs of a city. From new interfaces for the Gammas to medical software for Surgeons, they are a major part of any society. Electrical also focus on fixing, maintaining and creating new hardware for the software components.
• Phi - Philosophy, sociology and human sciences, this rather small sector dedicates itself to understanding the past, the future and the present. Psychologists are also found here, making Phi work closely at times with Delta and Nu. Historians and all those seeking higher, personal knowledge are also part of this guild.
• Chi – Farmers, they determine what crops grow in which field, focusing on maintaining the soil as fertile as possible. Engineers in Chi focus on creating farming tools while other members plant, water and harvest with the help of the Distilled.
• Psi – Culture, anyone creative and talented is with Psi. Musicians, artists, storytellers and the like appear here and it is one of the smallest but none the less important sectors for “appreciation of beauty” is one of the rare things that differ us from dumb animals.
• Omega - City maintenance, they are responsible for making sure the internal city stays in top shape. Omegas determine sewer safety, construction, detours, weather stations and ect. They are the ones who work most closely with the Distilled after the Lambdas.
Each person within the Society is given a unique identification number, consisting of 4 letters and 3 digits (i.e. FRDS190). Babies are born under a code of 4 Xs and 3 digits (i.e. XXXX543) and are constantly observed by parents, teachers and caregivers. At the ages of 5, 9, 13 and 16, they acquire a letter in place of one of the Xs, ranging from A to Z, giving a sense of the child’s potential (A mean high potential, Z mean low). The code does not change and while it gives a rough identification, it is by no means the only way a child is tested.
Each year, students must pass exams. Those who fail are given a two month grace period before retaking them. If they fail a second time, they are moved to the class below them. At 18, final examinations to enter the Society take place. Individuals who fail those exams immediately lose their ability to be invited to become an Alpha or Gamma. If they fail the exam a second time, they cannot be part of the Society and become the Distilled.
After a successful pass of their exam, each 18 year old is placed within the sector to which they have the most potential EXCEPT Alpha and Gamma. These two guilds have the right to hand pick the best of the best, inviting them to join the training to see if they would be deemed fit. At any point, an Alpha or Gamma trainee may be returned to their original sector, continuing the education there.
The Society itself runs on a Communist type structure – all sector members get an apartment or housing big enough to fit a kitchen, at least one bathroom, living room, bedroom for family and rooms for a private room for each kid. When a family grows, they are relocated to a new place, once kids marry and move out, parents are relocated to a smaller place. Children may only move out once married and starting their own family unit. Resources such as food are rationed and given out once a week, clothing and other things are given as needed. For good work and service, families are allowed to visit the warehouses and “shop” for objects.
Money does not exist in the world as all is regulated by the Council. Any disobedience of the laws of the Society and the Council mean exile for any individual above 18. Underage delinquents are moved to a different city and placed under close surveillance. Exiles cannot, under any circumstances, return to the city they have offended however, nothing but the Wild stops them from reaching another city and starting new (though no such events have been documented yet).
The Current Cities
There are currently 24 cities around the world that have survived and grown significantly stronger. Each one has a marginal advantage in one sector. You have been raised in New York City, the Alpha Council leader residing inside the walls, thick and massive, a barrier between the outside Wild and the citizens. There are two sets of wall - the thinner inside wall, separating the city itself from the fields and lands surrounding it. Farms and fields as well as the airport and train station are in between the walls. The thick outer walls mark the boundary between safety and peril. Only the Alphas - and the exiles - ever set foot outside.
The other cities in North America are:
~ Mexico City (Pi Sector)
~ Toronto (Nu Sector)
~ L. A. (Beta Sector)
~ Huston (Sigma Sector)
~ Havana (Phi Sector)
The map can be viewed here. (http://www.zeemaps.com/view?group=1340962&x=-101.586146&y=44.282545&z=14)
The Prey
These animals are not as highly developed intellectually as those who hunt them however, they have adapted to become faster and their survival instinct has evolved to allow them to outrun most predators. They were released during the Portolage although some species are kept within city walls as a food source, captured in the Wild and brought back.
http://www.prehistoric-wildlife.com/images/species/m/mammuthus-primigenius-woolly-mammoth-size.jpg
The woolly mammoth was roughly the same size as modern African elephants. Males reached shoulder heights between 2.7 and 3.4 m (9 and 11 ft) and weighed up to 6 tonnes (6.6 tons). Females averaged 2.6–2.9 metres (8.5–9.5 ft) in height and weighed up to 4 tonnes (4.4 tons). A newborn calf weighed about 90 kilograms (200 lb). It was covered in fur, with an outer covering of long guard hairs and a shorter undercoat. The colour of the coat varied from dark to light. The ears and tail were short to minimise frostbite and heat loss. It had long, curved tusks and four molars, which were replaced six times during the lifetime of an individual. Its behaviour was similar to that of modern elephants, and it used its tusks and trunk for manipulating objects, fighting, and foraging. The diet of the woolly mammoth was mainly grass and sedges. Specimens could probably reach the age of 60.

The stag-moose is a large, moose-like deer slightly larger than the moose, with an elk-like head, long legs, and complex, palmate antlers. It reached 2.5 m (8.2 ft) in height and a weight of 708.5 kg (1,562 lb). The stag-moose prefers wetlands and behaves similarly to modern moose. They live in large packs and tend to have an average life span of 25 years.
http://www.prehistoric-wildlife.com/images/species/p/paramylodon-harlans-ground-sloth-size.jpg
Paramylodon is a ground sloth measuring about 3 m (9.8 ft) in height and weighted as much as 1089 kg. It exhibits the interesting characteristic of having had dermal ossicles, small bones embedded in the skin, presumably adding a degree of protection to the animal. Usually travels in small groups of 4 or 5. Lives up to 40 years, has only one mate per life.
http://www.prehistoric-wildlife.com/images/species/m/megalonyx-jeffersons-ground-sloth-size.jpg
Megalonyx is a giant ground sloths measuring about 3 m (9.8 ft) and weighted up to 1 ton.It was a large, heavily built animal about 8 to 10 feet (2.5–3 m) long. Its maximum weight is estimated near 1,000 kg (2,205 lb). This is medium-sized among the giant ground sloths. Like other ground sloths it had a blunt snout, massive jaw, and large peg-like teeth. The hind limbs were plantigrade (flat-footed) and this, along with its stout tail, allowed it to rear up into a semi-erect position to feed on tree leaves. The forelimbs had three highly developed claws that were probably used to strip leaves and tear off branches.
http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs13/i/2007/115/0/9/Bootherium_bombifrons_by_Dantheman9758.jpg
Bootherium also known as woodland muskox, helmeted muskox or, bonnet-headed muskox. Bootherium was significantly taller and leaner than muskoxen found today in Arctic regions. Bootherium were estimated to weigh around 423.5 kg (934 lb).[5] Other differences were a thicker skull and considerably longer snout. The horns of Bootherium were situated high on the skull, with a downward curve and were fused along the midline of the skull, unlike tundra muskoxen whose horns are separated by a medial groove.
http://tcpermaculture.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Giant_Beaver_03.jpg
The giant beaver looked similar to modern beavers, but as the name implies, was considerably larger; it grew over 8 ft (2.4 m) in length — making it the largest rodent in North America during the last ice age and the largest known beaver. It weighed roughly 60 to 100 kg (130 to 220 lb), the size of a modern black bear. The incisors were 15 cm (5.9 in) long, and had blunt, rounded tips, in contrast to the chisel-like tips found in modern beaver cutting teeth. The molars were well adapted to grinding, and resembled those of capybaras with an S-shaped pattern on the grinding surfaces. One of the important anatomical differences between the giant beaver and modern beaver species, besides size, is the structure of their teeth. Modern beavers have chisel-like incisor teeth for gnawing on wood. The teeth of the giant beaver are bigger and broader, and grew to about 15 cm (6 in) long. In addition, the tail of the giant beaver must have been longer but narrower and its hind legs shorter.
http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2013/302/6/b/bison_antiquus_by_sinammonite-d6s8iss.jpg
Bison antiquus, sometimes called the "ancient bison", is a direct ancestor of the living American bison. It was taller, had larger bones and horns and was 15-25% larger overall than modern bison: It reached up to 2.27 m (7.5 ft) tall, 4.6 m (15 ft) long, and a weight of 1,588 kg(3500 lbs). From tip to tip, the horns of Bison antiquus measured approximately 3 feet (nearly one meter).
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/82/High_res_mastodon_rendering.jpg
Mastodons are an extinct group of mammal species related to elephants, that lived in herds and were predominantly forest dwelling animals that fed on a mixed diet of browsing and grazing with a seasonal preference for browsing, in contrast to living elephants that are mostly grazing animals. Mastodons were similar in appearance to elephants and mammoths, though not closely related. Compared to mammoths, mastodons had shorter legs, a longer body and were more heavily muscled, a build similar to that of the current Asian elephants. The average body size of the species was around 2.3 m (7 ft 7 in) in height at the shoulders, corresponding to a large female or a small male, but large males could grow up to 2.8 m (9 ft 2 in) in height and weigh as much as 4.5 tonnes (5 short tons). Like modern elephants, the females were smaller than the males. They had a low and long skull with long curved tusks, with those of the males being more massive and more strongly curved. Mastodons had cusp-shaped teeth, different from mammoth and elephant teeth (which have a series of enamel plates), well-suited for chewing leaves and branches of trees and shrubs.
http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/071/f/7/combination_of_horse_3_by_sinammonite-d5xuyq9.jpg
Equus lambei (Yukon horse, and Yukon wild horse) is much like the extinct Tarpan and the living Przewalski's Horse of today. It had long blondish mane and tail hairs, coarse whitish upper body hairs, and dark brown hairs on the lower leg. Faster and more dangerous that common horses.
The Predators
Little is remembered about these animals. Most of the information from the original experiment was destroyed when all the Predators escaped confinement and currently, it is impossible to collect adequate data. It is safe to assume that these animals are highly intelligent with their own languages, cultures and ideals.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9e/Smilodon_fatalis_life-restoration_'08.jpg
Smilodon was around the size of a modern lion or tiger, but was more robustly built. It had long canines, a reduced lumbar region, high scapula, short tail, and broad limbs with relatively short feet. Smilodon had shorter and more massive limbs than other felids. It had well developed flexors and extensors in its forearms, which enabled it to pull down and securely hold down large prey so it could deliver a killing bite without endangering the vulnerable elongate canines. The heel bone of Smilodon was fairly long which suggests it was a good jumper.
Smilodon is most famous for its relatively long canines, which are the longest found in the saber-toothed cats, at about 28 cm (11 in) long. Those of S. fatalis reached their full size in 18 months at a growth rate of 7 mm/month. These canine teeth were slender and had fine serrations. They were fragile and could not have bitten into bone; thus, these cats did not use their long teeth while taking down prey, due to the risk of breaking. Only when their prey was totally subdued did they use their teeth to slash the throat.
Despite being more powerfully built than other large cats, Smilodon actually had a weaker bite. There seems to a be a general rule that the saber-toothed cats with the largest canines had proportionally weaker bites. However, analyses of canine bending strength (the ability of the canine teeth to resist bending forces without breaking) and bite forces indicate that the saber-toothed cats' teeth were stronger relative to the bite force than those of modern "big cats".
http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g62/TigerQuoll/nthamerica/800px-Atrox.jpg
The head-body length of the American lion is estimated to have been 1.6–2.5 m (5 ft 3 in–8 ft 2 in)[7] and it would have stood 1.2 m (4 ft) at the shoulder. Thus, it was smaller than its contemporary competitor for prey, the giant short-faced bear, which was the largest carnivoran of North America at the time. The American lion was not as heavily built as the saber-toothed cat Smilodon populator, which may have weighed up to 400 kg (880 lb).The American lion to weigh an average weight for males of 256 kg (564 lb) and 351 kg (774 lb) for the largest specimen. The features and teeth of the extinct American lion strongly resemble modern lions, but they were considerably larger
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bd/ArctodusSimusReconstruct.jpg
The short faced bear weights about 900 kg (0.99 short tons), the largest being 957 kg (2,110 lb). It stands 8–10 feet (2.4–3.0 m) tall on hind legs while a large specimen would be 11–12 feet (3.4–3.7 m) tall with a 14 foot (4.3 m) vertical arm reach, and 5–6 feet (1.5–1.8 m) high at the shoulder when walking on all fours, it is tall enough to look a man in the eye. A series of claw marks up to 15 feet (4.57 m) high have been found along the cave wall indicating Short-faced bears over 12 feet (3.65 m) tall. The short faced bear inhabits more southerly areas, ranging from northern Texas to New Jersey in the east, Aguascalientes, Mexico to the southwest, and with large concentrations in Florida.

The dire wolf averaged about 1.5 m (5 ft) in length and weighed between 50 and 79 kg (110 and 174 lb). The dire wolf is estimated to have been 8% shorter at the shoulder than the modern Northwestern wolf, and of equal height to the typical gray wolf, but more heavily built. Despite superficial similarities to the gray wolf, the two species differed significantly. Today’s largest gray wolves would have been of similar size to an average dire wolf; the largest dire wolves would have been considerably larger than any modern gray wolf. The dire wolf is calculated to have weighed 25% more than living gray wolves. The legs of the dire wolf were proportionally shorter and sturdier than those of the gray wolf.
The dire wolf's teeth were similar to the gray wolf's, only slightly larger, the dietary characteristics were primarily carnivorous, as well as partially omnivorous. Using their large teeth, they crushed bones and had a stronger bite and slicing ability than the grey wolves. The dire wolf's robust skull and susceptibility to tooth breakage suggests that it hunted for large prey or scavenged the carcasses of large prey. Direwolves kill in a manner similar to its modern relatives, by delivering a series of shallow bites, strongly indicating pack hunting behavior.

The bear dog is the apex predator but unlike other carnivores, it lives alone, protecting its own territory and fighting against other of its kind for mates and land. An ambush predator, it waits in hiding until launching a fast and deadly attack. Males are larger than females and pups are born in dens. These are the largest terrestrial carnivorans 50 to 200 kilograms (110 to 440 lb) and stand as tall as a black bear.
http://prehistoric-fauna.com/image/cache/data/size/Hyaenodon-738x591.jpg
Typical of early carnivorous mammals, individuals of Hyaenodon had a very massive skull but only a small brain. The skull is long with a narrow snout - much larger in relation to the length of the skull than in canine carnivores, for instance. The neck was shorter than the skull, while the body was long and robust and terminated in a long tail. Despite the name, these creatures are not related to hyenas. The average weight of adult is estimated to be 500 kilograms (1,100 lb) and around 10 feet (3.0 m). Compared to the generally larger Hyainailouros, Hyaenodon dentition was geared more towards shearing meat and less towards bone-crushing.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3d/Homotherium_serum.jpg
Homotherium reached 1.1 m (3.6 ft) at the shoulder and weighed an estimated 150–225 kg (331–496 lb) and was therefore about the size of a male African lion. Compared to the Smilodon, Homotherium had shorter upper canines, but they were flat, serrated and longer than those of any living cat. Incisors and lower canines formed a powerful puncturing and gripping device which aided in lifting and carrying prey. The molars of Homotherium were rather weak and not adapted for bone crushing. The skull was longer than in Smilodon and had a well-developed crest, where muscles were attached to power the lower jaw. Its large canine teeth were crenulated and designed for slashing rather than purely stabbing.
It had the general appearance of a cat, but some of its physical characteristics are rather unusual for a large cat. The limb proportions of Homotherium gave it a hyena-like appearance. The forelegs were elongated, while the hind quarters were rather squat with feet perhaps partially plantigrade, causing the back to slope towards the short tail. Features of the hind limbs indicate that this cat was moderately capable of leaping. The unusually large, square nasal opening, like that of the cheetah, presumably allowed quicker oxygen intake, which aided in rapid running and in cooling the brain. As in the cheetah, too, the brain's visual cortex was large and complex, emphasizing the scimitar cat's ability to see well and function in the day, rather than the night as do most other cats.

The Rules
GM is Breggo (http://role-player.net/forum/member.php?u=48768) and Co-GM is Eli (http://role-player.net/forum/member.php?u=2518)
1. This roleplay is rated Mature for a reason. Your characters are trying to survive against dangerous, impossibly cunning and seeking revenge creatures. Yes, there will be gruesome scenes as you will see creatures killed, kill and injure. Yes, your character will always be in a state of peril and may be mimed or injured. Yes, romances can happen and so can foul language, fights, random events and all that jazz. By submitting a character, you are agreeing to be mature about everything.
2. Please no God modeling. This is super important!!! What I mean by this is that no player can kill off or involuntarily move another player’s character. No player may also have their own character invincible, unnatural, unrealistically powerful or somehow rapidly developing abilities. I will ask posts and CS to be modified and toned down.
3. No Mary-Gary-Sues. Make your character original while making it possible within the Society. This world is very dear for me and I will be picky with the backstory and characters, be warned now. If you are not prepared for criticism and maybe drastic changes, mayhap you aren’t ready for the Portolage.
4. The GM’s (and Co-GM’s) word is law. Do not argue – if I say your character is hurt, you cannot ignore it. If you ignore it, you will receive a warning about changing your post and if no action is taken your character will be killed off and you will not be allowed to make another.
5. Please tell me or Eli if you are leaving – we understand there is real life as we have one as well, but give me and fellow RPers a fair warning. If either of us have had no word from you and you are gone for over 10 days, one of us will take control of your character till your return or kill them. Similarly, please do not expect us to post every day – with university, directing theater and dancing, I will not have the time and Eli has other commitments as well.
6. No arguing or fighting in the OOC. Come on guys, we know this. If you have an issue with someone, take it out to PMs or better yet, tell me! We are here to have fun, discover secrets and create one heck of a story. Also to explore a new universe.
7. All Mature section RPA rules apply, no exceptions!
8. Please write a good few paragraphs per post. Yes, we all get writer's block but at least try. It is very hard to respond to some events when players give nothing but "He said, she sat, he killed, they fled". Add some flavor.
9. HAVE FUN! I want you to fall in love with the Portolage as I have, as terrifying as it is. Challenge yourself, push your limits and become stronger :D
Please add “In Society we believe in, it’s rules, justice and protection.” at the end of your CS

Frequently Asked Questions
How many characters were experimented on? You say 4 in a room but 12 left the city...
There are 12 characters (assuming we get that many) and each has been experimented on. After the initial awakening, they live in rooms of 4.
Do all characters have to be Alpha?
No, but all characters should have been training as one at one point or another. Most/some dropped out or were tossed due to medical reasons or inability/unsuitability to continue on.
What is this crime you speak of? What is considered a crime?
Pranks affecting the security of the city, stealing, killing, violence, staying out past curfew, using city equipment (transportation, drugs, ect) illegally, not following protocol. Ask and I will say yay or nay but usually, anything bad is crime.
What is this Fauna experiment and how does it affect the children?
As we move outside the walls, I will tell you in more specific terms your abilities and limitations but for now, you notice slight physical changes and tend to follow your gut more. Some gained agility, some strength, some eyesight however NO ONE YET NOTICES WHAT THEY GAINED.

The short faced bear inhabits more southerly areas, ranging from northern Texas to New Jersey in the east, Aguascalientes, Mexico to the southwest, and with large concentrations in Florida.
http://th08.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/i/2011/113/6/6/canis_dirus_by_dantheman9758-d3ccj0y.jpg
