The music boomed inside the car. Jeffery Middleton was driving the large SUV while everyone else laughed, drank, and smoked inside the vehicle. They were on their way to New Orleans for a big party. Jeff felt like the party itself was inside the vehicle. The road was so barren, they hadn't seen a car in miles. For the past hour they have been driving through a swamp, barely seeing the light of day. Jeff was getting agitated by his friends jumping around in the vehicle and bumping into him.

Every so often, he would look beside him to see Jade. He secretly liked her, ever since the 8th grade. Of course he would never tell her that. She was one of the quietest ones in the SUV besides himself. When she looked over at him, he smiled embarrassingly and looked away quickly. One day he would tell her how he felt.

Another 15 minutes ticked by, when they passed a sign that said 'Welcome to Forest' the population was scratched out in red paint, atleast he hoped it was paint. "Hey, guys!" he attempted to yell over the music. "We might have to stop here for gas!" he shouted. No one heard him of course. He passed another sign that said the nearest gas station was 45 miles from there, but he could have sworn he saw a small sign below it saying 'Turn back!' The smoke must be getting to me.. he thought to himself.

The sky was husky, the land around a barren waste land with a SUV booming with music with smoke filled inside with loud laughter as everyone talked. But one girl was sitting quietly looking out the window in the front seat, her hand in her hair with her arm propped up from the window. Jade Margaret never liked the noise inside the vehicle and would like to stay inside her room then outside.

But she could never turn an offer from her crush Jeffery, even if he looked like a normal boy from town, while she was a brooding nineteen year old. He was out of her type as a lot of people said whenever they hanged out but he had something about him that she couldn't place. Sighing, she looked over to him and they locked eyes. Jeffery seemed to flush and look back to driving, and she smirked before looking back out the window.

Jade thought about things while they drove, about a poem she could possibly write from the scenery, and different music then the one playing from the radio as it was hip hop and not her genre of music.. She would rather listen to Depeche Mode or Suicidal Romace as it soothed her rather then making her wild as it seemed to make everyone else.

Charvi was curled in a corner of the van, smiling as she watched the rest of her friends and acquaintances party. She herself wasn't much of a party-goer, but she liked to people watch and this trip to New Orleans was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for her. She coughed quietly as she choked on the smoke every now and then, but otherwise chatted casually with the drunk people near her. Not being much of a smoker nor a drinker, she wasn't sure why she wasn't passing on the party in favor of exploring New Orleans but at the moment she didn't quite care. Carpe Diem, right? From the front was the vague sound of Jeffery's voice, but she couldn't hear him over the music.
"What did you say?" she shouted up to the front.

The loud music in side the vehicle made Kate feel incredibly free. She sipped on her Martini happily, than tried to stretch a bit and found out she couldn’t. Even though the car was large, there were too many people inside to sit comfortable. “Sorry Charv” she said to the girl directly next to her. Kate didn’t know if she could hear her, the music was really at the highest volume. She tried better to sit still, but every now and than she shifted just a little and sipped some more of her drink. Maybe the Martini was getting to her already. After all, she didn’t drink that much usually.

But Kate wasn’t complaining. This holiday was going to be the best time of her life. She looked at the people in the van. It was amazing how soon she had been accepted in their group. By now she could call them real friends. Even thought they were all different personalities, it seemed liked it fit great together. Just like the two J’s in the group, Kate thought, but she wasn’t going to spill that out.

Suddenly, she felt her phone buzzing. She picked it up and read the text-message. It was from her mother. 'Hi girl! What do you think of Florida? Hugs!' And of course the message didn't said anything about the trip with her friends. Kate sighed. It was as she had forseen, it took her mother long enough to stay put, they would be moving soon. Again. She wondered what she had done to get fired this time. Kate thought about texting back, but than decided not to. It was very much unlike her. The text-message made her mood a bit sad, but she had told herself to have fun this holiday so she tried to ignore this feeling for now. She tried to concentrate on listening to the music once more.

Matthew was the last one in the car, since they had to pick him up at Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot, and thus was sitting in the back with Jade. Although he would've preferred to be up front in the passenger seat so he could fuck with Jeff, he knew that it was reserved for his queen. And being in the back with Jade had it's up sides, there he could smoke and drink with someone else who would smoke and drink and have a good time. Throughout the car ride, he had been collecting a small pile of empty beer cans and an empty Vodka bottle on the floor in front of them, as well as a empty cigarette pack or two. Ever since he was picked up, he talked like an idiot and split beer on his MCCUU, seeing as he hasn't had the opportunity to change.

"Not a problem, Kate," Charvi said graciously. "It's rather cramped back here anyway; can't be helped." She nudged the toe of Matthew's boot with her own foot. "Report on sobriety, Marine," she joked. She knew he was probably hammered by now.

Jane was sitting in the back seat with Matthew, puffing on a Malboro and drinking a strawberry daquiri cooler. The hip hop song was beginning to get on her nerves because it was an overplayed one, and she wished some rock or techno/trance would come on. "As soon as we get to New Orleans, I'm getting a voodoo doll!!!" she yelled at the top of her lungs. "And I'm gong to use it on whoever sings this damn song!!!"

Jess took a sip of the Sprite he had been savoring for the long drive. His eyes watered from the smoke. The sun was going down, so he turned on the headlights. Jeff rubbed his hand across his face and looked at Jade next to him. He smiled when he saw her looking outside, absent-minded. When he looked back, he saw something in the middle of the road. Jeff barely had time to react, he swerved the van around the black figure, sliding into the marshy waters. Water splashed over the whole van. Everyone panicked for a minute. "Calm down! I'll go outside and check what that was." he yelled for everyone to be silent.

He opened the door and stepped out into the dense night. There were bull frogs and crickets sounded off into the night. He pulled out his cell phone for more light, turning it on and shining it on the road. "Hello? Anyone out there?" he asked loudly. He could feel everyone watching him from the van. He turned around and shrugged at everyone, when he felt someone put a hand on his shoulder.

Jeff spun around and put his cell phone up to the man's face. "What're y' doin out her, son!" A man holding an axe stood about 6 feet tall looming over him. Jeff didn't know how to react..

The second the SUV swerved off the road, Matthew had been on high alert and his marine instincts, that come from days of serving on the field in combat, kicked in. He waited anxiously in the truck for something to happen and kept a hand on the hilt of his KA-BAR. He sat inside the van, where the atmosphere was that of pure suspense. He saw Jeff spin around, and instantly knew something was wrong. He jumped from the last row of seats, over the second row, and opened the door of the SUV as fast as he could, then ran outside. It took a second for his eyes to adjust from the brightness of the SUV to the darkness of dusk, but sooner or later he saw the man with the axe, and yelled to Jeff, with his hand still on the knife.
"Hey! What's going on out here?"

The SUV swerved and Jane let out a yell of surprise, spilling what was left of her daquiri all over her clothes. When they landed in the water, Jeff got out and she watched as he did, wondering what the hell was going on. She gasped when she saw a tall axe-wielding man grab him. Matthew startled her as he made hasty movements to hop out of the car and help. Jane felt fear creep up her back. She didn't like this, not one bit.

Sam was furious. It was usually her job to go and lure the groups of passersby in. But no, her father had to go and do it, and ruin her fun. Like always, he stopped her from having the joy she deserved. And now she was stuck in this old gas station waiting. She grabbed a hunting knife and threw it at the nude corpse of a girl long dead. It landed in her head, blood pouring out the wound and down the body. "I'll get you fer this, daddy. You mark my words I will. Taking my fun away. Just wait. When I find out which of them dag gum varmits is your pick to take care of, I'll get them befer you. How you like dat, daddy?" She said to noone. She went to the front of the station and looked out the window, hoping to see the group or her dad showing up.

Charvi screamed a little as the van swerved off the road and water splashed around it. Once Matthew and Jeff had jumped out, Charvi cautiously climbed to the back of the car and poked her head out the rear doors. She'd seen a man with an axe; never a good sign, doubly so in the middle of the night.

"Is everything okay?" she called. "Any service?"

Kate had just swallowed another glass full of Martini, when the van suddenly swerved to the side of the road. She shrieked and glanced quickly at Jeff, trying to see what was going on, but the amount of people in the car blocked her view. Usually Jeff drove very carefully, so Kate felt surprised.

The SVU came to an abrupt stop and water gushed over the vehicle. Kate tried to look out of the window, but her view wasn't too well, due to the water. In the meantime the music was still playing loudly and it was getting on her nerves. Jeff had stepped outside shortly after the van had stopped and was immediately followed by Matthew. "Can somebody please shut off the music?" she asked loudly.

She wondered what was going on. Charvi was looking outside, so she decided to just ask. "Why did we stop?"

Charvi shook her head. "I don't know, but we should stay in the car, let the boys handle it," she said slowly, crawling back in. "There's a man out there with an axe." She tried to hide her fear, but did so very poorly. Her eyes gave her away.

Jade looked at Jeffery when he turned on the lights and blinking, the car swurved. Hitting her head on the window hard, she screamed as it hurt bad and and then her head hit the back of the seat as they hit water. Putting a hand on her head, she closed her eyes as she felt blood goozing from a small crack. She felt dizzy and her body ached from the collision and opened her eyes slowly and struggled to get the door open to fall to the ground below.

The water seemed to wake her up but only made her hurt more and looked up to see a man with an axe in front of her crush, "What the.." Jade muttered.

Hearing Jade up front, Charvi remembered there was yet another to their number.
"Is everybody okay?" she asked as she crawled toward the front. She'd heard a crack earlier, but nobody in the back seemed to be bleeding. "Jade are you alright?" Uh oh...Blood was running down Jade's cheek from her head. "Here..." She parted her hair gently and tried not to let Jade see her wince. How did they fix that? She was no medical professional and she doubted any of the others were, either. "Okay um...just...I know it will hurt, but try to keep pressure on it, okay?" She crawled over to the driver's seat and rolled down the window. "Jeffrey!" she called. "We need to get Jade to a doctor; she's hit her head and she's bleeding. Does anybody have any bandages?" she added in a quieter tone, turning to the back to look at the others.

Jeff quickly put his hand up, stepping back. "Whoa, sir! Please, put the axe down! We're just passing through!" Jeff continued to put his hands up and stood next to Matthew. The man stepped closer. "Why in da hell did y' run off da side of the road son." He said putting his axe down and extending his hand to them. "Didn't mean te scare y', boy. The names Billy, Billy... Feral."

The man seemed to hesitate on the last name. He smiled a toothy smile. Jeff uneasily shook the man's hand. "I'm Jeff, this is my friend, Matthew." He said pointing to his friend. "I'm sorry, about what happened. I didn't see you in the road." Jeff said, looking back at the van.

Jeff heard his name and turned quickly. "What? Jade is hurt?" Jeff quickly went to the van and picked Jade up in his arms. "Sir, she needs help, is there a Hospital nearby?" Jeff asked quickly. The man ran towards them. "Hmm, seems pretty bad. Y' can take 'er to ma Motel in the middle of town. It's called Croc Inn. I meet y' dere." Jeff was in a panic, but kept his cool. "Thank you, sir. We'll be there soon.

Jeff put Jade in the passenger seat and looked over to Matthew and Charvi. "There will be no more music. Could you explain what is going on to everybody in the back?" Jeff turned and went to the Driver's seat.

Charvi her suggestion to stay in the car sounded very reasonable. Kate didn't even dare to leave the car, after Charvi had mentioned the man with the axe. She felt a bit guilty because the two guys were standing outside of the vehicle and hoped the two would get back soon. Charvi looked scared too.

Than Jade screamed. Apparently the front of the car, with a little bit more space, had done damage to Jane her head. Kate leaned forward and tried to gather all the medical information she knew, but she didn't came up with any. Stress situations made her black-out very easy. She offered her handkerchief, the one who had her embroider initials in it and stared towards the blood on Jade her head.

After a short while Jeff came back to the car. She heard him telling them about the music. Well, that sounded like a very good plan, because the noisy music was getting very very irritating. Than he went back to the driver's seat and Kate started to wonder why she didn't call the hospital already. Maybe better deliberate with the others first. "She definitely needs a professional to look at her" she suggested, "I could call a hospital?"

Jane heard Charvi asking for bandages and looked through her purse sitting beside her and found a pack of Band-Aids to lend. "Hey, I got some Band-Aids right here if that will help" she said leaning forward to pass them up. Suddenly, she tripped over the cooler bottle she had spilled earlier, and went forward into the seats, making an "eep" sound as she did, but luckily the seats prevented her from getting hurt.

The Lifted Lorax

Charvi nodded and slid into the back seat, taking the Band-Aids from Jane. She doubted they would help much, but they may help a little.
"There's no cell reception, we can't call anyone," she explained to Kate. "The man out there said we could stay at a motel in town, so we're going to follow him." She crouched by the front seat, gently placing the Band-Aids over the cut on Jade's head and hoping the way she placed them would absorb as much blood and snag as little hair as possible.

Jade saw Jeffery run up to her and pick her up and felt the world turn and yelled out, "Ah!" as he did and tried to sit in the front seat, leaning her head back and looking at the people in the car. "This is a great day isn't it..." Scoffing, and parted her hair lazily as Charvi put the banadge on her head. Jade could feel the sticky feel of the blood still oozing from the wound and then with eyes half closed looked at the window, which only had a small crack.

Rolling her eyes but feeling the dizziness come once more, made her stomach nauseous and put a hand to her mouth. Feeling liquid coming quickly up, she leaned forward and barfed near her feet. The disgusting puke staining her boots and the odor quickly traveling up Jade's nostrils.

She couldn't believe this was happening...

The second that Jeff was back in the car, Matthew rushed back in and slammed the door. He gave Jade a quick look over, to make sure she was alright, and simply told her to keep light pressure on it and it should stop bleeding soon enough, then promised that he would see if she had a concussion when they get to the motel. After that, he slid into the back seat and waited to go.

Jeff started up the van and tried to back out of the water. The tires spun in the mud. "Damn it more delays!" he yelled throwing his hands up in the air. He looked over at Jade. She didn't seem to be ok, a worry expression came across his face. He reached over and took Jade's hand, "Everything will be ok, I promise, Jade." He put her hand down in her lap and stepped out of the van.

He looked at what the van was stuck in. Thick swamp mud. This is great.. he thought grabbing his face. He looked behind the van, which was halfway on the road. He looked down both sides of the street. Looks clear.. He turned back to the van and poked his head inside, "I need somebodies help, please." Jeff yelled looking at everyone in the back seat.

After Charvi had explained the phone situation, Kate had checked her phone just to be sure. Of course Charvi had been right and the lack of reception with her cellphone disturbed Kate very much. There weren't that much areas left where she couldn't use her phone and she felt rather useless.

In the mean while, she continuously peeked towards the front seats through the mirror in the car. Jane had thrown up and didn't look much better after it. At least, the wound on her head looked mostly covered with all the bandages.

Jeff and Matthew had gotten themselves back into the car, but it looked like the car was stuck in the muddy water. Although Kate was still scared of the blood and unsure about the whole strange situation they suddenly have found themselves into, she decided to help when Jeff asked. "I will try my best" she said, shaking a little while stepping out of the car. Her eyes shifted the area around the car, the gloomy street looked a bit strange to her and she tried to ignore her changed mood. Quickly she checked her phone, but there was still no reception and she put her phone into her coat. Kate wasn't that strong, but they got going to help Jade. Her friend needed rest to heal and getting to that motel seemed like the best option. She tried to concentrate on the tires of the car, it looked as if the car was sucked into the muddy ground. "What do you think is best?" she asked, her voice a bit quieter than normal, "try to remove the mud or push?"

Matt let out a slight huff when Jeff hinted that he needed help, since he always seemed to be asking for help from someone. The second his ass hit the seat, he got right back up and got out. He walked to the front of the car, then the back, and inspected the situation.
"Okay, we're going to need everyone out of the car to help us push it out. Let's try rocking it out of the mud. It that fails, grab a shovel."
Matt stood around for a second, then decided that he would be more useful pushing than rocking. He positioned himself in front of the car and got into a good postition to push it out.

Jeff nodded. "Everybody out of the vehicle! Jade stay where you are. Also, I need one person at the driver's seat to set it in reverse and floor it." he yelled to the van. When everybody started piling out of the van he looked at the mud again.

Stuck pretty good.. He looked at Matthew and Kate. I hope it'll be enough.. he sighed and got ready to push the heavy van.. He saw someone in the driver's seat ready to reverse. He looked back at everybody. "We need all the help we can get." he said to everybody. Some of the guys walked to help, one of the drunk ones tripped over himself. "Ready? One.. two.. three.. Push!" the all pushed.

Her head was dizzy, she was hurting as hell and now her boots were dirtied with vomit. Jade tried breathing calmly but air was coming out ragged and heavy. The brain needed oxygen. Leaning her back against the seat careful not to rest her head, she watched mostly everyone got out of the vehicle to push. She wished she could help but the crash hurt her badly unlike everyone else.

Sighing, she closed her eyes and put her hand into a fist, letting her nails dig into her flesh to concentrate the pain to her palm, but it didn't seem to work. Opening her eyes once more, she opened the sun visors mirror. Jade saw a pale sick face in the mirror and turned her head to examine the wound and saw blood sticked to her hair. She couldn't believe this.

"I'll get behind the wheel," Charvi volunteered. Her footwear and clothing weren't exactly conducive to slippery mud; sandals or bare feet would only ensure that she would slip sooner, and the yards of silk would only give the clumsy girl more to trip over.

She crawled up into the front seat again, trying not to let Jade see her reaction to the smell of vomit. At the smell her throat closed up and she had to close her eyes for a moment.

"Here, why don't we get a bit of fresh air going?" She leaned carefully accross Jade and rolled down the window before rolling her own down. That was sort-of better. "Ready when you are!" she called out the window. On three, she threw the van in reverse and floored it. Technically, not having a U.S. driver's liscence, she really shouldn't have even been behind the wheel...but this, she figured, was an exception.

Jane jumped out of the car as fast as possible when Matt said everyone needed to get out and help push. She had on combat boots, so she probably wouldn't sink in too deep into the mud. She got went to the others and when Jeff said push she pushed as hard as she could, her muscles straining because they hadn't been used like this in a while. She gritted her teeth and hoped they could get out of this jam soon. 'the faster we get out of this place and to New Orleans or civilization the better. Jade needs a doctor, and I doubt that redneck knows how to help.' she thought.

Drops of sweat appeared on her forehead, while Kate and her friends tried to push the car forwards. This just had to work, they needed to move the van out of here. She didn't notice she sank a little bit further into the mud and her shoes got really dirty. "Oh come on" she muttered. She glanced at the wheels of the car. Maybe it was wishful thinking, but the wheels did look a little like they started to move. She continued to push and put all her strength against the backside of the van.

When the car backed out of the mud, causing everybody to trip over themselves, it swerved and halted onto the pavement. Jeff stood up out of the mud, wiping it off the best he could, "Ok everyone back in, quickly!" he rushed to the van, in hopes of everyone following him. "Come on," Charvi muttered to the car, leaning forward to pat the dash board. "You can do it."

Suddenly the wheels squelched free and she sped backwards. Swearing loudly, she panicked and stomped on the brake as soon as she felt the tires hit pavement. She sat there, shell shocked and staring wide-eyed at the road in front of her with a white-knuckle grip still on the steering wheel. Suddenly, the driver's side door opening startled her out of her shock and she nodded at the thanks, sliding backwards into the back.

"We know this place is safe...?" she questioned, frowning.

Jane tripped over her own two feet as the car was pulled back onto the road. When she landed, she felt a sharp pain go through her right ankle. She winced and bit her lip hard, hoping no one had noticed. Jane slowly got up and walked a little. It was only a sprain, which was good compared to what it could have been, so she got back into the car behind the others and sat down. "I'll just be glad if we find a hot shower now." she said, the mud making her feel icky.

The good thing was the car had finally left the mud and now they were back in the van. The bad thing was that everyone looked really dirty. Kate tried to brush the sticky mud of her clothes. She started with the right sleeve of her jacket, because that is where she had hit the ground when the vehicle had moved. Her elbow stung a bit, but for now she only worried to go somewhere else to fix their friend Jade. Kate glanced at her in the mirror, seeing she still looked very pale.

Everyone seemed to be quiet. Too quiet. Their holiday was rapidly going downhill. It looked like everyone was a bit dazed. Maybe all her friends had felt the strangeness when they were outside of the car as well. Well, everyone except for Jeff, who was trying to reassure Jade. Kate had already decided she would let him be Jade's hero, if he wanted to be. They definitely seemed attracted to each other.

The comment that Charvi made after his speech, made Kate winch. She nudged Charvi in the shoulder and gave her a warning look. Surely Jade definitely didn't need more stress.

As most of the people were out pushing and the van seemed to slide out of place and onto the road, the vehicle jerked and made Jade's head pound even harder. As if someone was hitting her with a sledge hammer, and it didn't feel good at all. Closing her eyes, she wanted to imagine herself at home, sitting on her bed with her laptop in front of her talking to online friends from Vampire Freaks. But no.

Jeffery seemed to comfort her, but his voice seemed miles away and just patted his shoulder to reassure him. Jade never liked sympathy as it was people looking down at others, but let it slide for now.

So much for pretending that everything was okay. "I saw him too Matthew, but have you seen another car in the last hours? We don't know when we reach the next opportunity for a stop." Kate sighed. "At least, in a motel there will be others. Not just that one guy." I hope, she added in her thoughts. "I mean, it can't be that bad, right? There just has to be a telephone and a first aid kit, than we can call the hospital and move on." Oh my, this monologue didn't sound that convincing at all. "Of course, if you all think the same way.." She trailed off, looked down and studied her fingernails. They were still covered in mud.

If we don't stop soon and atleast help her a little, things can get alot worse!" he gripped the steering wheel tightly.

"No, I don't trust this man. No, I don't want to stop in the middle of nowhere. And No, I did not ask for this." he closed his mouth in silent rage. He didn't want to take it out on them, unless it was too late. The van was silent, save for the engine and the road. Jeff sighed. "I'm sorry.. Just worried is all.." his voice trailed off when he glanced at Jade, looking paler than ever.

Hearing them basically fight over her, made her get angry but flinching from their loud words but said aloud, with a lazy but stern tone. "Stop fucking worrying, I'll be fine. Let's just go to the Motel." She gripped her hand, digging the nails into her flesh so she wouldn't wince from the pain that was going in her head. Jade now felt like little critters were crawling inside her brain as it was becoming numb or somewhat. She was losing a lot of blood, but didn't want to show it.

Jane sat there listening to the others throw about opinions and sighed. This really wasn't doing Jade any favors, and she wished they would stop before she could decide to hit them all in the head and give them a reality check. She stifled a giggle when she heard Charvi use the words Psycho hillbilly to describe that creeper outside. Suddenly, a thought crossed her mind. She peered out into the darkness. "By the way guys, where did that old redneck psycho go?"

"I don't know..." Charvi frowned, worried. She peered out into the darkness as well, then between the two front seats up at the road. She didn't see anyone. "I really have no good feelings about this.." she added slowly.

She had rolled her eyes at Matthew's reason for him being the best qualified at tending to Jade being that he was a Marine. She'd taken several first-aid courses herself and was just as qualified, but didn't feel the need to brag about it. She'd done the best with Jade as she could given the limited supplies.

"I suppose we have no choice, though, do we?" she sighed.
