New players are always welcome!

With a start, your eyes open. Brown walls, a small candle flickering in the corner and your gear exactly where you'd placed it. Everything was just as you'd left it when you fell asleep, so then why…? You let your legs dangle from the side of the bed for a few moments before the satisfying thunk of the floorboards signals your departure from the bed. Careful as you always are not to let your talons sink into the wood, you creep over to the door and listen. Again, nothing. By your estimations, it has to be morning by now. So then why…?

Why?

Why did everything feel so wrong?

“You really are interesting, aren't you?”

In an instant, you turn, only to face nothing. No, not even your room. Just empty void. You turn once more in the hopes of being comforted by the sight of the door, but again all you see is blackness. Looking down and up yields no better results.

“I'll be watching you, little one.”

As the sensation of falling takes you, you begin to scream.

Still screaming, you shoot up, throwing the blankets aside. If you could be sweating, you imagine you would be. Muttering a few choice curses in your native tongue, you roll off the bed and start pulling your clothes on. This time, you can hear voices from outside the door. It's a comfort, but not by much. Most of the Argonians of Skyrim are seen as little more than just-better-than-slaves. The fact that you have a sword strapped to your side doesn't make them think that much more of you, either.

Now fully equipped, you leave the small inn room and make a beeline straight for the door. The Winking Skeever is a strange name for an Inn, but no one else seemed to care as they drowned themselves in mead. You'd never liked the stuff, always too sweet. A part of you had wanted to visit the Blue Palace, but Torygg, the High King, seemed like a busy man. Maybe another day? Before you so much realise what you're doing, you exit out the main gates as they open to let in some travellers.

Ignoring the overwhelming urge to throw your boots off, you trod on down the stony path. Two turns and then you come across it, your favourite spot in all of Solitude.

The docks.

With a large breath of the salty air, you find a lonely spot along the wooden structure to take a seat and stare out over the water. It always cleared your head. Now…

[] Try and find someone with some work for a sellsword. The steward usually does stuff like that, right?
[] Stay by the docks for a while. You're enjoying the breeze.
[] Go and buy yourself some better gear.

Mind set on the idea of looking for work, you pull yourself up. It's only after two steps that you curse at your boots, enough to garner some looks from a nearby ship. Muttering obscenities under your breath, you bend over and pull the boot off. And out comes…

A rock?! How did a rock get in your boot?!

Slipping the offending piece of armour back on, you make the journey back up the stony path towards Solitude's gates. It's truly a magnificent sight from the outside, with enough thickness to make it resistant to siege as well. With a perfect balance of looks and actual usefulness you didn't doubt Solitude's place as the Capital of Skyrim. Still, you did doubt the cushy people stuck in its walls.

It takes a few minutes for a guard to notice you standing outside and order the gates open. Apparently their wariness was backed by something, but you had no idea over what. As you walk past the numerous stores, you make a mental note to stop by them before too long. You have a fair bit of gold leftover from your last venture, so some new gear shouldn't be a problem. After the market area is the houses, all lavish and far too large. You think yourself a simpler person than this, but even you have to admire it. Then, it comes up in front of you.

The Blue Palace, in all its splendour. Home to the High King of Skyrim, guarded ferociously by its people. Considering its position on a cliff, the only way to it was through Solitude's front gates. They'd truly thought of defence when building this city. No one pays you any mind as you walk through the first arch and then the set of doors etched into the stone. Inside, there's a lot of bustle, with a line of people on one side with a pair of Nordish men chattering on the other. In front of it all is yet another archway, which only barely fits considering you're inside the building proper.

“Another one to wish the High King a happy birthday the day early?” one of the men says suddenly, spotting your entry.

“He doesn't look like a local,” the other shakes his head. “You here for something else, Argonian?”

You recognise the finery one of them is wearing, and the armour of the other. A Steward and Thane respectively, if you had to guess.

“I'm here about work,” you respond carefully, keeping your hands well away from your weapon.

“A sellsword, huh? Away with you then, we have-” the Thane starts, already shaking his head.

“No, I actually think I have a job for you,” the Steward cuts him off, smiling. “There's word of a small camp at the base of that Daedric Shrine between here and Dragon's Bridge. You know of it?”

You nod. You'd passed it on the way here a few days ago, after all.

“We don't know who they are, but anyone camping out at a Daedric Shrine is bad news. I want you to go deal with it. After it's done, come back and I'll reward you. Sound good?”

Not seeing anything wrong with the deal, you nod.

“Good, now off with you. With good time, you could clear it out and be back before sundown.”

Taking his advice to heart, you leave the Blue Palace behind. The city of Solitude passes by in a blur until you reach the great gate, which opens almost immediately on your arrival. One of the guards even nods at you. Had the Steward sent word ahead? How? As you step out into the open, you realise you'll need to plan ahead. How should you approach this?

[] Carefully. Take your time and keep your eyes open. A day out in the wildnerness is nothing to you if you get kept out of the city.
[] Quickly. They probably aren't all that dangerous and what are the odds they have people watching for you?
[] Realise you didn't buy anything and head back to the blacksmith about gear.

In the instant that you cross the threshold you remember something very important. Turning back, you walk straight through the gate and back into the city. One of the guards gives you a strange look, but you ignore him and continue forward. A small slope leads up to the second level of the city, where there are two shops. One is inside, whereas the other…

The familiar clang of metal on metal is pleasing to your ears as you walk up to the Nord man. He doesn't acknowledge you at first, but after you make a few inquiries he seems more than happy to help. Didn't look like he got a lot of work these days.

“A refit of the armour and a new sword, huh?” he looks you up and down before grinning. “Leave it to me.”

You're asked to strip out of your armour and put it back on more times than you count. You'd been through a refitting process before, but none quite as… thorough as this one. After the better part of an hour, the armour now fits snugly around you and actually covers the parts it's supposed to protect. Similarly, the new weapon at your side looks far more reliable than the one you were using earlier that morning.

“This is some quality work,” you note, twisting and turning to get a better look at yourself.

“Can't claim to be the best in Skyrim, but I work hard at my craft.”

“Well, thank you. I hope I won't need it where I'm going,” you laugh, handing over the payment. Beirand looks at it curiously before glancing back up at you.

“There's an extra ten septims here, Argonian.”

“It's a tip for your services.”

For a moment, you think he's about to take offence, but he breaks out into a grin.

“Wait there a moment.”

He's only gone for about a minute before he comes out with a mixture of leather belts and a small sheath. No, not just a sheath, there's a blade stuck in it. A dagger? He walks up to you and begins strapping it on without another word. You don't stop him, simply letting him do whatever it is he was doing.

“Alright, all done. This piece was made by my son, he's a quick learner, eh? His masterpiece. He wanted me to sell it, but I couldn't rightfully do that… so consider it a gift for your patronage.”

Looks like you just made friends with Solitude's Blacksmith!

Relationship gained!
Beirand the blacksmith (Acquaintance, +5 to social rolls with Beirand and his family)

Item gained!
Iron Longsword: No masterwork, but it'll get the job done. Just point the pointy end at the enemy, alright?

Item gained!
Well-Fitted Leather Armour: It actually covers the important parts, which is more than most bandits can say for their armour.

Item gained!
Sharp Iron Dagger: Small and unassuming, but capable of killing a man if you stab him in the right place.

Thanking the blacksmith one final time, you descend back down to the first level of Solitude's city. The guards at the gate look annoyed, but you wave them off and they turn their heads.

Determined not to lose too much time, you set out. It's a bit of a strain to keep your eyes open and alert for the entirety of the way, but you manage. You've had to keep guard while others slept, after all. So this is nothing if you put your mind to it. Looking at the sights of Skyrim as you pass is more than worth it, in the end. Although you aren't attacked and you don't notice any wild creatures, you still feel a sense of foreboding. As you reach the forked path, that feeling only grows. The sun begins its descent from its high point and you march on, your stomach turning.

Without the sun continuing its descent much further, you come into sight of the Daedric ruins. The architecture of the place is… stunning, in its own right, but it still feels unnatural. You hadn't bothered to learn whose shrine this was and you didn't really care. The Daedra were unnatural beings and you wanted nothing to do with them. So close to the source of your mission, however, you immediately drop down into a low profile. You can see three tents near the base of the building, but what's odd is that no one is moving around.

That's when it hits you.

There are only two types of people that would seek refuge at a Daedric Shrine. Daedra worshippers, and…

Muttering curses beneath your breath, you sneak forward. Before you've even made it a few feet, however, figures in the tents begin to stir. They don't sound friendly, either, being awoken from their slumber in the middle of the day. Your fears soon come to light as the first man crawls out, a hand between his eyes and the sunlight. Even in the shade of his palm, you see it – his red eyes and pale skin.

A vampire.

“A delivery meal?” he remarks, tongue dancing over his lips. “Oh my, how generous. Come here, little lizard.”

You want to refuse, but your body-!

[] Run!
[] Draw your sword!

As the vampire closes in on you, the only thing that comes to mind is how stupid it would be to die here. Apparently, the Gods agree with you. A brief moment of clarity washes over you as the vampire looks to the side briefly, and you regain all your faculties. Slowly, you inch your hand towards your dagger, keeping the stupefied look on your face as the blond vampire closes in on you. Scant inches from you, teeth bared at your neck, do you strike. In one fluid movement, the small dagger comes free of its sheath and slashes out at the Nord's neck.

He takes a few steps back, surprise lighting his eyes. His fingers reach up to claw at his neck, but they are quickly covered in crimson from the fountain of blood. Eyes rolling back, he collapses back. You draw your sword and continue forward over his corpse, coming face to face with the other two vampires. They watch you cautiously, one with a small steel shortsword and the other with… what you can only assume are iron claws jammed into her skin. You have no time to think about how painful it must have been as the shortsword wielder dashes forward.

Unfortunately, he trips on a jutting-out piece of rock as he moves forward. As easy as it would be to dodge, you're still woozy from the attempt by the vampire and only barely deflect the blade with your sword. It glances past your blade and over your forearm, slicing it open. Luckily you feel more than awake from the wound as the clawed woman moves forward too, trying to claw at side of your cuirass. Some swift manoeuvring on your part makes her attempt useless, however. Not wanting to be left behind, you step forward and raise your weapon.

Now on your right side, you focus on the man first. His dark hair covers his features, but you notice from his height that he's likely a Breton. Your wild swing is far too powerful for his shortsword to handle and ends up cutting the blade in two as he moves it up to defend himself. Your blade sings as it moves, slicing the man's face and splaying blood all over your armour. Not wanting to be caught unawares, you pivot and throw your dagger in a spur of the moment, catching the Imperial lass before she can stab you in the back. It's fatal, as the blade somehow managed to stick in her throat. Satisfied, you turn once more back to the dark-haired man, who's only barely clinging to life at your feet.

“Picked the… damn best time… for it...” he manages between breaths, staring up at you with his deep red eyes. “A day before or after and we'd have… wiped the floor with you… lizard.”

Unable to hold on any more, he breathes his last. Looking back, you confirm the other two are dead just as their skin crumbles away and starts to turn into ash. Wiping the blood off of your sword on your pant leg, you sheathe it and move over to the woman's disintegrating corpse. Pulling the dagger free, you wipe it on what remains of her clothes before sheathing it as well. Now...

Realising that looting the corpses is probably a good idea, you turn back and pat them down as their bodies take to the wind. By the time you're done, your disappointment is more than a little palpable. Just a few pieces of broken metal from their blades. You think of collecting the ash, but it's already gone in its entirety.

Item gained!
Broken Weapon Fragments: Just a collection of metal and a hilt or two. Nothing special, but could probably be smelted down.

Eyes slanted, you stalk over to the main entrance of the building in hopes of finding something better. As your hand reaches out to the handle, you feel a force compelling you to stop. To not go any further.

Your thirst for exploration caves that in, however, as you press down on the contraption and step forward into darkness. It only takes a few moments for the light to seep in from outside, but really it's the smell that hits you first.

A chamber, with over a dozen bodies lying in coffins.

Some stir at the sudden influx of sunlight – some more than others. They're all in varying degrees of transformation into vampires. Suddenly, it all becomes clear. They were transforming travellers day by day in hopes of creating a coven. This was pretty close to the road to Solitude, after all, heaps of Nords available.

… but then, what should you do with them?

[] Walk away.
[] Cut their throats while they slumber, it's a mercy.
[] Try and wake one up to talk to them?
[] Find a torch and burn them alive.

Drawing your dagger, you make your way up to one of the slumbering creatures. With no remorse, you slice open its throat. As blood spills forth, you move onto the next… and then the next. Under your feet is a sticky pool of blood, but you pay it no mind. In fact, you aren't even really there. Such an act isn't something any normal person could do. This is for the good of Skyrim… for the good of Skyrim.

You keep telling yourself that, right up to the little girl.

She can't be more than 12, sleeping peacefully amidst all the blood. Her skin isn't pale like the others, but it is… strikingly white. With her beautiful blonde hair, you can only assume she's a Nord. If you were of the human races, you might even consider her a little beauty, but you turn your nose at that. But this girl, she isn't a vampire, surely? If she is, do you have it in you to kill a child? Turning back, you look at the remaining corpses and shudder. No, you have to…

She stirs.

Instinctively, you sheathe your dagger and place a hand over her eyes. A sharp gasp of complaint emanates from her, but you shush her.

“Quiet, child, something horrible has happened,” you murmur, lifting her up without allowing her to see the act you've just done.

She doesn't try to bite you, so you take it as she's still human and trudge back to the shrine entrance. Sweet sunlight envelops you, or, well, what's left of it. Keeping the girl's eyes covered, you close the shrine doors and breathe a sigh of relief. Plopping the girl down, you finally uncover her eyes.

They're a beautiful, unnaturally vibrant purple.

“What's your name, little one?”

“… Liss,” she manages after a few moments of fidgeting. “Are you going to kill me?”

“No.”

“Do unspeakable things to me like they did?”

Your heart breaks.

“… no.”

She breaks out into a radiant smile.

“Then can you help me find my Mother? I came up here to Skyrim to look for her, but then these people caught me and...”

She goes on, but it very quickly turns into a child babbling.

“Is it far? I still feel really tired,” she suddenly states, looking from you to the road a few times.

Without so much as a second thought, you crouch down. It takes her a few moments to realise what you mean, but she eventually comes over and wraps her arms around your neck. You hold back a hiss as you feel how cold she is. How long had she been trapped in that tomb? She had to be starving, and…

“You're really warm.”

“… us Argonians are different from you Men,” you respond, standing back up. “Where are you from, little one?”

“A place really far away.”

That didn't help in the slightest, but you take note of the sad tone in her voice. It must truly be far.

“I'm from a place far away too,” you start as you trot over towards the road, intent on making it back to the city before nightfall. “Where I'm from, there is nothing but swamps and deadly creatures as far as the eye can see.”

“That doesn't sound like a really nice place to live.”

“No, perhaps not, but it was still my home. I would not trade it for the world.”

“Oh, what's your name, Mister?”

“Swims-In-Deep.”

The sound of a child giggling by your ear is perhaps the most embarrassing thing you've heard in years.

“Why do you have a name like that?” she continues to giggle despite the seriousness of the question.

“I'm very good at swimming,” you chuckle.

Trait gained!
Good Swimmer (+10 to rolls while in water): You have your name for a reason, after all!

With the sun already setting, you make your way through Solitude's massive gate. The guards eye the girl on your back cautiously, but don't question you, even as you weave straight through the market towards the Blue Palace. Liss is, by this stage, fast asleep. You can't blame the poor girl, as exhausted as she must be. You doubt they let the people sleep as they tried to change them. What worries you, though, is the nature of it all. That didn't seem like any normal vampire you've heard of. Some of those people looked like they'd been there for weeks, not days. Shouldn't they have turned already?

Before you know it, you've come up to the entrance of the Blue Palace. Here, a guard stops you and shakes his head.

“Leave the girl.”

“No.”

He looks shocked.

“Look, you can't go in-”

“It's fine, Hernsing,” a voice behind him calls out. “That's the one Falk sent out earlier. Let him pass.”

Not looking at all impressed, the guard stands aside. You note that he has a decorated pauldron in addition to the rest of his armour. Did you just piss off someone important?

Relationship gained!
Guard Captain Hernsing (Distrusted, -10 to social rolls with Hernsing)

You make your way into the Blue Palace, which is rather empty at this time of day. With no one in the intermission area, you move forward into the throne room itself. The spiral stairs are a little difficult to climb with a girl clinging to your back, but you somehow manage. Sitting atop the throne is the High King himself, busy talking to a woman beside him that you can only assume is his wife.

“Ah, the Argonian! I was hoping you'd return today,” the Steward walks up to you, a smile on his face. “Please, the High King requested you tell the tale directly to him, should you return.”

Nodding, you continue forward. Surprisingly, no one mentions the girl clinging to you. Right up to a few feet in front of the throne.

“So, what's your name, Argonian?” the High King starts off.

“Swims-In-Deep, sir.”

“Sir?” he laughs, drawing everyone's eye. “Well, at least it's better than 'my lord' and 'my liege'. What happened at this Shrine? And why do you have a girl clinging to your back?”

A part of you wants to lie about Liss, but you can't find it in you to persuade him with a lie.

“They were vampires,” you start, thinking back as best you can. “Three of them. I surprised the first and struck down the other two. I decided to explore the Shrine afterwards and...”

“… found the girl?” Torygg finishes for you, frowning.

“Not just her. There were at least a dozen of them. I slit their throats while they slept, but they didn't turn to ash. Most were in the process, but this girl had been left untouched.”

“That will be for Sybille to decide.”

A woman steps forward, clad in what you assume to be the garb worn by a Court Mage. Nodding, you crouch down and the woman moves further forward, peeling the girl from your back. This awakens her, of course.

She's not too happy.

“No! Don't make me leave him!” she cries out, immediately going to cling to your back again.

Everyone in the room freezes, hurt in their eyes. Whatever this girl had gone through, no one had been through anything quite so traumatic. Even the High King who had an entire city to think about could only look on with sadness at the scene in front of him.

Well, everyone except Sybille.

Despite her protests, she prods and checks the girl's neck. Forcibly pulling her face so that she can look into Liss' eyes and running her fingers along the girl's skin.

“She's in no danger of turning,” the Court Mage confirms.

A collected breath of relief echoes around the room.

“Good. Well, your service to Solitude won't be forgotten, Swims-In-Deep. In fact, I think we may have need of you again soon enough. Would you perhaps like to stay with us in the Blue Palace for a few months? The girl is free to stay too, of course.”

This is an offer unlike any other, to stay in the same building as the High King of Skyrim.

Not wanting to deny the most powerful man in Skyrim, you nod your head.

“Torygg, this is ridiculous!” one of the men near him suddenly exclaims, shaking his head. “We barely even know this lizard, let alone-”

“I am not asking him to stand by in my chambers, Erikur. Calm yourself.”

Grumbling, the Nord takes a step back. Torygg once again focuses on you with a small smile. The man certainly knew how to talk to people, you had to give him that much.

“I'll have Falk find a room for you and one nearby for the girl,” he states. “Also, a payment for services rendered, I think you deserve it.”

“No, same room!” the girl now clinging to your leg calls out.

Most everyone is stunned, but Torygg simply laughs.

“Very well. Falk?”

“There's a lot of rooms available, of course, but one for these specifications...”

The well-dressed Nord from earlier that day walks over to you and makes a gesture. You follow him from the Throne Room and out a side door, which leads to the actual Blue Palace itself. There are a lot of hallways and you half-wonder if you're going to get lost in this place more than once. He stops outside a particularly ornate door and experimentally pushes it open. You take a sharp breath. Inside is a room cleverly split into two with an arch in the middle, effectively combining two rooms into one.

“I'm glad they kept this place in good care,” he nods, satisfied. “You should be fine together here. I'll send for new clothes for tomorrow, as well.”

Liss is barely listening, having already wandered in and claimed the room further from the door. Sighing, you enter yourself and make a mental note of all the placement of the furniture. Your life as a sellsword isn't going to make living in a Palace any easier. Although are you even a Sellsword at this point?

“Oh, before I forget.”

You hear a quiet clink and turn just in time to catch a single coin. A brief look at it reveals it to be worth 1,000 septims. Better than carrying them individually.

You somehow manage to convince the guards of Solitude to have you stand in on their drilling practice. Despite your best attempts, however, you make absolutely no progress with your own training. From what you can tell, everyone here is about your own skill level too, so training with them isn't going to achieve anything. Maybe you should find a personal trainer when it comes to Swords?

No gain!

After wandering the Solitude Market for the better part of the day, you eventually find yourself in the general store. The Nord behind the counter doesn't seem very interested with your questions and eventually pawns off a small doll to you. It isn't very beautiful, but you suppose you will take what you can get. Maybe another time you'll get lucky.

+16 to next roll with Liss!

With fond memories of the atmosphere of the Winking Skeever, you return to what you can only attribute to as happy hour. You're not much of a heavy drinker yourself, at least not of ale, so you sit in a corner and watch the reverie with a smile. To your surprise, though, a person taps you on the shoulder. As you turn, you find yourself face to face with an old comrade.

Lifts-Her-Tail, despite her rather… loaded name, was actually a rather modest looking Argonian woman. Covered with steel scale plating and armed with a giant blade strapped to her back, she was the very epitome of someone you 'really did not want to get into a fight with'. The best part of it all? You'd worked with her on a number of jobs before coming to Skyrim. So that begged the question:

“Litail, what are you doing freezing that nice ass of yours up here in Skyrim?” you chuckle, offering her a seat.

“I could say the same to you, Sideep,” she replies happily, taking the seat. “You don't seem the type to hide up away from the world.”

“I manage to make things interesting.”

She raises her brow at that, but doesn't prod any further. With a quick order of mead for the both of you, you reconnect over old stories and talk well into the night. It's good to find an old friend amidst all this frozen landscape.

“You staying in Skyrim for long?” you inquire through the honeyed liquid you can't help but guzzle.

“A few months. Just looking for work, honestly,” she admits, leaning on the table far more than a normal person would. “You got any leads on that?”

“I might, actually, I'll see what I can do.”

“Fancy meeting you here again… uh...”

“Swims-In-Deep.”

Beirand looks at you apologetically in between hammer swings.

“I'm not very good with names,” he admits with a laugh. “Great with faces though. What can I do for you, lad?”

“Ended up with a lot of scrap metal after my last… outing. Think you can do anything with it?” you ask, placing the components out on a nearby bench for him. He looks at it from a distance before grinning.

“Yeah, I've been looking for scrap stuff to give to the boy for practice. This is perfect. Here, I've got to do something to repay you.”

He takes a step back from the forge and strips his apron off before making his way inside the house. You're waiting far longer than you were the first time, but when he walks you, you don't regret it for a moment.

“This is my masterwork,” he grins, handing you the sheath. “Noticed you use one-handed blades, so thought this might interest you.”

You pull the blade from its protective case and look it up and down. Definitely a longsword, too thin to be otherwise. But that's pretty perfect for your fighting style. In fact… the more you look at it, you see tiny improvements that seem to have blended it between some kind of katana and longsword. Like a hybrid.

“Thanks for this, Beirand.”

“It's nothing. I appreciate the patronage. Just make sure you come back and pay me lots of gold, y'hear?”

Upon returning to the Blue Palace after running an errand, you come across what is most definitely a raging Liss. Any immediate attempts to calm her down end in failure and you can only watch on as she eventually breaks down into a fit of sobs.

“I miss my Mama,” you hear, over and over.

Your heart breaks for her, but what can you do? You don't know kids. You've never worked with them before. Without knowing what else to do, you drop the gift you'd bought a few days earlier by her side, thinking this is likely the best time. As you leave, you hear her pick it up, but the sobbing doesn't stop.

She'll probably resent you for not really being able to help her.

Many tales were shared and reminisced upon, and you remembered how skilled Litail was (and presumably still is) at unarmed combat. Hell, that reminds you of how you two met!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About two years ago, after clearing out a camp full of bandits, you'd decided to reward yourself with a couple of drinks down at The Flowing Bowl in Anvil. You were celebrating on your own but managed to make friends with three male Redguards who had just finished guarding a caravan on its way into Cyrodiil. After you'd all shared your best stories, and after several more rounds of mead, the Redguards mentioned that they'd never actually seen an Argonian stay underwater for a large amount of time, and the ones they had met either weren't willing to demonstrate, or kept their head above water. Having enough alcohol flowing through you, and feeling festive enough, you volunteered to entertain them.

You made your way down to the docks, placed your leather armour and iron sword on the floor, and turned around to address your audience - arms outstretched - before diving into the water.

"Stay moist, friends."

The night's water was freezing, and the alcohol you'd had wasn't helping either. The sudden change in temperature was more than a shock to your system, but your liquid confidence made sure you weren't going to be one to disappoint. You swam underwater for well over two minutes in what was almost pitch-black water; thankfully the temperature of the water had become less of a problem, but it really was near-impossible to see from what little illumination the torches provided. Despite the darkness, you'd managed to spot a glimmer on the bottom of the sea floor and swam closer to discover a silver ring that you pocketed and sold later on.

When you finally emerged 50 meters from shore, the cheering had to be loud enough to wake the whole town. Not wanting to venture out much further and get snagged by some beast, you headed back to shore to be greeted by three disappointed characters.

"C'mon, Argonian, you can do better than that!" one of them said, they were all still cheering you on,
"Yeah, just a bit longer!"

"Not tonight, my friends," you replied, killing the buzz whilst re-equipping your leather armour. This caused their smiles to quickly fade, and the once joyful atmosphere fell sombre.

"But tonight's your last night, Argonian. Don't you want to have fun?"

Reaching for your sword, you managed to wrap your hand around the hilt and then-!
One of the Redguards tackled you to the deck, and as much as you struggled you couldn't escape his grasp.

"Say goodnight." You remember the Redguard pinning you down saying that as he unsheathed his dagger, but a female Argonian, at the exact same time, said the exact same thing...

In what seemed like the blink of an eye, the three men you'd befriended at the tavern were unconscious, bleeding and missing teeth. Then, like an angel descending from the heavens, this beautiful Argonian was standing over the top of you with a hand outstretched, her arms and fists covered in what you'd guess was the Redguards' blood.

"You're gonna have to be more careful, Argonian. Are you alright?" She told you this as you accepted her hand and got back onto your own two feet.

You just stood there, mouth gaping slightly, in awe of how sexy you found her to be. In your drunken state you were very tempted to pull out the ring you'd found and get down on one knee.

"...hello?"

"Apologies, uhh..."

"They call me Lifts-Her-Tail, and if you saw any of what just happened you'd understand why."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hoping to see Litail around town, you head towards The Winking Skeever, and you spot her just as she's leaving. After a short jog, you catch up with her before she has chance to carry on with what she had planned.

"Ah, Sideep! I was hoping I'd see you again. Any news about a job?"

"Nothing just yet, but if you've got a few hours free, I have use of you." The disappointment in her face fades.

"Something decent for daylight, I would hope."

"Is that really what you'd be hoping for?" Grinning, you carry on with what you came to her for, "Could we find somewhere where you could teach me how to get better at using my body for combat? I've always had an interest but we never did seem to find the time for that."

Agreeing to your proposal, she leads you to just outside of the city, down towards the sawmill. Hjorunn is busy cutting wood, and he's never minded people coming down to the waterside all that much, and that's where Litail and yourself train. Lifts-Her-Tail begins to show you various ways to improve the punches and kicks that you throw, and she even teaches you how to disarm someone holding a sword.

After a good several hours of training, you're both in need of a good clean, you moreso than her - you've been put on your arse more than a few times, and you only managed to knock Lifts-Her-Tail off-balance once, when her guard was down.

The both of you sit on a nearby rock, looking out towards the marshland. This is when you decide to tell her about your latest job with the vampires, and about the shrine and finding Liss. Litail listens with interest, intent on helping out an old friend. Once you've finished speaking, she asks if the girl is staying with you.

"Yes, but not at the tavern. She's staying with me at the Blue P-"

"The Blue Palace?! Talk about changing the course of the river, huh Sideep?" You can't really say that you were surprised by this reaction, but she allows you to carry on, still struck with amazement.

"Sheer luck, I guess. Interested in finding this girl's mother?"

"Without a shadow of a doubt."

"Great - you two can meet today, if that works for you."

Without even pausing to think, she tells you "It does. But we can't go to the Blue Palace like this..." she pauses, gesturing towards the dirt on both of your bodies, "Race you!"

With a twinkle in her eye, and an unfairly advantageous leap from the rock, she beats you into the river - but that doesn't mean you can't have some fun with her in the water...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You enter your chambers to find Liss fast asleep, cuddling up to the doll you'd bought her the day before. Sitting on the edge of the bed, you place your hand on her shoulder and her eyes instantly open.

"Don't worry, little one, you're safe here." Your words bring some comfort to her, but it seems as though she's still on edge from everything that's happened to her. Who can blame her for it?

"Have you found her yet?" Liss stays motionless, staring blankly ahead.

"I'm afraid that may take quite some time; I ran into an old friend, though, and they tell me they're willing to help," it was then that Liss turned over, and saw her. "This is Lifts-Her-Tail, you don't really want to know why she has that name though, trust me."

Both of you turn to face Litail, and she just looks at you before shrugging and demonstrating why exactly she has that name.

"I like her." Liss says to you, with a contagious smile creeping onto her face.

You don't know it happened, but you somehow ended up dragging little Liss around Solitude to explore. Despite not having explored the city yourself, you have a good sense of direction and somehow manage to end up not going down any dead ends. Liss seems appreciative, taking the opportunity to talk to every random person that will talk back. She's energetic, you'll give her that much. As you make your way up past Castle Dour, however, her expression changes.

“Is that a temple?” she murmurs, looking up at the grand building as you pass by it.

“Indeed, child,” you respond smoothly, following her eyes.

“Can we go inside?”

Not seeing any harm in it, you turn and lead her towards the grand doors. They open rather smoothly despite their size and you creep inside, feeling like small insects against the grand scale of it all. Briefly, you imagine just how much money must go into a place like this. The thought of where it all comes from leaves a small scowl at your lips. You yourself aren't a believer of the Nine, or the Eight, whatever they call it. These giant buildings are still things of beauty, though, so you guess you have to give them that.

“Welcome,” a middle-aged balding Nord walks up to you, smiling, eyes switching between you and Liss. “It's not often I see an Argonian up here, much less one with a child. Have you come to pray?”

“I haven't, but the girl...”

“I don't know how,” she blurts out, looking a little embarrassed.

“It's fine, child. Come, I'll show you.”

He leads her to one of the pews and has her sit down to bow her head. As he starts chanting words, you begin to look around. The small shrines in their little alcoves interest you and you walk over, touching it gently. As expected, nothing happens. Maybe if you were a follower of the Eight…

Suddenly, a small invisible wave passes through you.

It's small, but you feel it. Curious, you turn back to the middle of the room, only to see the Priest take a few steps back.

“This is...” he gasps, bowing his head. “I've never seen someone react to the Eight so strongly before.”

“Is that a good thing?” Liss questions, cocking her head to the side.

Looking to you for advice, you merely smile and shake your head.

“I do not know, little one, but we should keep moving on.”

“Okay!”

Leaving the stunned Priest behind, you make your leave of the temple.

“How are you enjoying your time in the Blue Palace, Argonian?” the High King asks, leaning on one side far too much as he sits in his Throne.

“It is… different,” you manage, thinking far too hard about it. “I have spent most of my days on the road, it is difficult to adjust.”

“Ah yes, the difficult life of the sellsword. Tell me, did you enjoy it?”

Surprised by the question, you think back on your adventures. Most of them were… dark. Merely a means to an end. Killing people isn't all that hard once you know how, and you know how to kill people. Still, it has led you to a few great things. Litail, for instance.

“It was my life for a long time,” you reply simply, shrugging. “So I suppose I did, yes.”

“I'm glad to hear that,” he smiles, finally righting himself. “Sometimes we must be content with our lots in life, even if it means doing something we don't want to.”

You feel like he's talking directly from experience. Although what would a High King not like about his position?

Perhaps it's best not to ask.

The High King is naturally surprised when you approach him regarding training in the arts of persuasion. He seems more than happy to oblige, however, and does his best to teach you the way of the spoken word in court. You take to his lessons well and find yourself far better at orating than before – but the High King notes you still have a long way to go. He seems happy to continue your lessons at a later date, so you make sure to thank him politely before going on your way.

You find yourself in the Blue Palace's library by chance one day. You've never really been into reading books, but you decide to rummage through the shelves out of curiosity. “So, this… Lifts-Her-Tail...”

You're standing in front of the High King's throne, surrounded by his Thanes and peers. Most turn their nose up at the name, but you notice a few are holding back snickers. It's quite a famous name, in fact. You imagine that's part of the reason she took it. Well, that and…

“Is she as good as you?” he asks, leaning forward on his throne.

“Better,” you state confidently. “She's better with a blade than this one, but she cannot glide through water.”

“So you're saying you're a better swimmer?” a Nord calls out from the side, sounding nonplussed.

“Everyone has their skills,” Torygg smiles. “You can vouch for her?”

“I spent a number of years working with her. She's not a slave to coin like most sellswords, she just wants a chance to prove herself.”

“Very well, I'll take her on as well, then.”

Well, that went far better than expected. You'll have to tell Litail the next time you see her.

More than a little surprised at the development, you somehow ended up in the High King's personal chamber. This is perhaps the first time you think you'll be talking to the man with no one else around to hear your words, so you're understandably nervous. When the man walks in, you can only stare. Where there is usually confident smile is now a sullied frown, along with downcast eyes. He'd invited you here on important business, so why…?

“Ah, Swims-In-Deep, good, I was hoping you'd accept,” he attempts a smile as he notices you. “Would you like some mead, perhaps?”

“No thank you,” you decline, remembering what happened the last time Liss caught alcohol on your breath. Torygg simply shrugs and walks past you to a cabinet, pulling a large stein out along with a bottle of mead. Nords and their alcohol.

“Now...” he takes a seat across from you. “There's something I wanted to tell you. Or… well...”

He trails off, falling into what you can only assume is deep thought. As the silence extends on and on, he eventually fills it by pouring some mead into the metal stein. A few moments of drinking later and he seems to have figured out what he wants to say.

“I've received intelligence that someone wants to kill me.”

Well, that was unexpected.

“Who?” you ask, leaning forward.

“That's not important. What is important is that I can't eliminate them before they reach me. It would… create the wrong example. I'd be doing nothing but making a martyr. No one can stand up for me, either. No Nords, at least. Our ways are too old, too set in stone.”

You think you know where this is headed, so you raise a hand.

“You want me to deal with him?”

“Not like an assassination, mind,” he clarifies, staring into his drink. “But when… when he comes to challenge me, I need you do something. Challenge him instead, as a warrior rather than a Nord. Or just… anything. Attack him. No one here will stop you and I can pardon you afterwards.”

This is… a very big risk. You know nothing of the man supposedly wanting to kill the High King. It could all very well be a setup.

Or some cruel joke.

Unable to help yourself, you make your way out of Solitude's Main Gate with the intention of heading to the docks. There have been… rumours floating around of something unsavoury going on. There was nothing concrete, of course, but you've taken it on yourself to deal with it.

Whatever it is.

As you arrive with the beating sun shining down on the water, you quietly thank the Hist for your good fortune. The water is clear today, enough that you can almost see the bottom from above. Should you wish to enter, you'd be at an advantage. Now, how to go about this?

Ah yes, that's right, the rumours were relating to some actions by the dock workers. Smuggling, perhaps? Intent on putting an end to whatever it is, you start asking questions. The first Nord you pull aside doesn't seem interested in talking to you, but the second quietly ushers you into a corner as soon as you try to ask about what's been going on. Half expecting to get a dagger in your back, you keep a close eye on him and the surroundings. What he says next, however, surprises you.

“They're planning on cleaning out all the warehouses.”

“… excuse me?” you cock your head.

“One of the ships docked, she's a pirate ship, ser,” he explains, his face alight with fear. “They've bribed most of the workers and filled their heads with promises if they keep quiet and do what they're told. You're that lizard sworn to the High King, yeah? You have to stop them somehow.”

“Why not tell the city guard?”

“They'd make a break for it as soon as they saw the red cloth.”

Yes, that's true. While wearing red had a lot of good things attached to it, you somehow doubted its value in stealth operations. So that pretty much left you to deal with the problem.

“When are they making their move?” you question him.

“In a week,” he responds carefully, eyes flicking between you and the people working a fair ways behind you. “The closer you get to the time, the more alert they'll be.”

So you're lucky you decided to check this out so early, then. What should you do?

[] Take the direct approach and fight your way through these pirates. Dead men can't steal a thing.
[] Take the sneaky approach and get on board their ship. From there, you could probably do as you please. So long as you pull it off.

Careful not to attract any attention, you make your way down the docks as far as you can go. When you notice no one's watching, you dive into the water. It's hard to swim with all your gear weighing you down, but you've had far more practice than most. Making sure to stick out of sight and keep as low as you can, you slowly glide through the water back up the path you'd just taken. It takes some time and a critical eye on your part to avoid notice, but eventually you come to the biggest ship currently moored. With the clear water and your sharp eyes you notice the anchor's chain coming out of a porthole in the side of the ship.

Entirely self conscious of your actions, you cling to the freezing steel and climb up. It takes more than a little effort to squeeze through the small hole at the top, but you manage. You find yourself in what you can only assume is a storage area. Before you've even made it a few steps, however, a light catches your attention. Caught out, you try your best to hide behind a row of boxes, but it looks like whoever came had a sharper eye than you were expecting.

“Who's hiding back there?” you hear a voice call out, in tune with the sharp sound of a sword escaping its sheath. “That you, Fjolnir?”

Praying to whatever Gods there may or may not be, you draw your dagger and rush out from behind the boxes you'd been hiding behind. Unfortunately, alert as he'd been before, you don't manage to surprise him. He's ready, blade drawn, and easily deflects your first blow. Cursing, you fall into a ready stance as he does the same. Surprisingly, he doesn't call out for help. Maybe he thinks he can take you on your own?

You wish him luck with that.

After a few moments of companionable silence, you charge at each other. You don't have time to draw your blade, but watching the pirate's movements show just how little that matters. He's sloppy, not a warrior. You imagine he's only slaughtered people before, not gone against a trained sword. So your blade strikes true, weaving straight through his guard and into his throat. Blood fountains out as you draw it free, mixing with the liquid he coughs up. Your breathing is heavy, your arms are shaking and your mind is cluttered; but you have to keep moving.

Breathing heavy, you stumble through the wooden halls of the ship in an attempt to find the captain's cabin. With how much noise you're making you can only be surprised when no one comes across you. Is something else going on? Rather than question it, you take advantage and blatantly search without fear of being caught. Soon enough you come across a door that's far too gaudy to be anything but the captain's door. Steeling yourself, you step forward and push it open.

Before you is an extremely lavish room, a plush red carpet, multiple bookshelves and a desk with a great number of jewels and books strewn across it. Behind it stands a Redguard woman with a wicked-looking scimitar, a solemn face and numerous scars across every patch of skin you can see. You're not sexist, but… a female captain?

“So you're the one who's been stomping around my ship,” she sighs, not even reaching for her sword. “Why are you here, lizard? Planning on joining my crew?”

Shocked, you don't even manage a response before she smiles.

“Ah, no, that's not it. You came here to get rid of us 'pirates', no? Well, I won't even bless you with the truth. You're going to die here, lizard.”

She finally draws her exotic blade, falling into a ready stance you're not familiar with. Drawing your own two blades, you crouch low and wait. There's a tension in the air for a few moments before she screams a warcry, vaulting the table. The way her blade moves is something you can't even begin to follow, so you rely totally on your instincts to drive the blade aside. A great ringing fills your ears as she steps back, blade twirling.

“Oho, you're pretty good, lizard. Come at me seriously, then!”

Personal Destiny Point used – LardDude! +15 to next combat roll!

Roaring, you descend on her like a creature from Oblivion. She's obviously surprised and can't react as well as she might otherwise. With your off-hand you jab your dagger repeatedly into her side as your main hand keeps her blade occupied. Eventually she can't hold against you any longer and you slash out, cutting straight through the front of her blouse to reveal… metal beneath? It doesn't matter, as your masterwork blade cut straight through it, but-

“Good, good!” she coughs, one hand clutching at her chest. “But I'm not done yet!”

Not expecting a retaliation, her blade strikes around your guard and slices straight through your cuirass like a knife through butter. You scream and leap back, but know that it could be far worse.

Lost 5 health!

Not as used to dealing with injuries as an Argonian, you notice that the woman is breathing heavily from the loss of blood. One more push and-! Your dagger leaves your hand as you throw it at her. Surprised, she bats it aside, but it's not enough. Your blade plunges through her midriff, piercing the metal beneath her clothes like it's nothing. As you pull it out, the blood pools through her clothes and drips to the cabin floor. Miraculously, she's still standing.

“That was a good fight, lizard,” she coughs, dropping the sword. “Now hurry up and finish me off.”

But there's another option.

[] Kill her.
[] Spare her.

10-06-2015, 01:04 PM
You don't imagine that sparing her will really achieve anything different, but you sheathe your weapon. She looks surprised. Her eyes question your decision and you merely shrug.

“Hah, you're an interesting one, lizard,” she coughs, holding a hand to her stomach. “If you're going to spare me, does that mean you'll help me clean up?”

… clean up?

“Well, I'm not going to die here!”

“Excuse me for being ignorant, but surely with a wound like that you'll be carried away by the river today,” you frown, looking her up and down.

“I keep some medicine stored in case of emergencies, you idiot.”

With strength you didn't know existed, she manages her way over to her desk and rummages through a drawer. Eventually she pulls a vial free, one that you're very familiar with.

“Hist sap,” you gasp.

“Ah, so you're a native to Black Marsh, eh?” she grins, popping the cork off the top. “This is purified stuff. Way more potent.”

You don't even have time to stop her before she throws the glass back and chugs. It's… almost horrifying to watch. You'd only seen one person other than an Argonian drink of the Hist and the outcome wasn't pleasant. You almost want to avert your eyes, but you watch on. Noticing you, the Captain quickly strips off her top and reveals the tightly linked chain beneath. You notice the slit where you stabbed through, but beneath it is-

“You're not wounded?”

“Told you it was pure stuff,” she laughs, leaning on the desk far more than you expect is needed. “Takes a lot out of you, though. Don't know how you lizards do this.”

“We and the Hist are one and the same,” you explain. “Just looking at that bottle reminded me of home, not because of the appearance, but the voices.”

“… voices?”

You nod.

“The Hist is forever with you, wherever you go. It is said that those born outside of Black Marsh are not connected to the Hist. I cannot imagine such a lonely life.”

The Captain breaks into guffaws in front of you, causing you to furrow your brow in response. Judging the Argonian people for their connection to the Hist was beyond rude. Still, you were an understanding individual. Barely.

“Wish I knew what that was like. Name's Elia, by the way. I suppose in a roundabout way I owe you my life, so… keep that in mind,” she snickers as she sits down, leaning back. “I'll forget about the men you killed on the way up here. Oh and I'll explain this thing we've got going on, but not now. Hist sap is one hell of a high.”

It only took a whole two minutes before you were whisked away by a small gang of pirates onto the ship. You'd come with the intention of talking to Elia about whatever it is they were doing, but being dragged by a mob of sweaty sailors didn't fill you with much hope. As you arrive in front of the engraved door for the second time, however, you find yourself with a change of heart. You'll enter with a clear head and take it as it comes. Considering the men had been yelling your name only a few moments before, you don't bother knocking as you open the door.

… ah.

“Oh, the lizard?” you hear Elia through her grin. “I didn't think you'd be coming back to check me out so fast!”

Well, she was practically naked. Maybe if you were… well, not Argonian you'd be interested. But as it was? Nothing. Her efforts were wasted.

But you couldn't break it to her.

“I have a name,” you deadpan, leaning against the wall aside the door.

“So does everyone, but names are boring. I prefer nicknames. Even my name; Elia! It's not my real one, but I'm guessing you knew that already.”

She laughs at the surprised look you give her.

“What, you didn't realise? Sorry to break it to you,” she 'apologises', sitting down in her chair. “So, you want to know what's going on here, right?”

You nod in response and her faces turns serious.

“Well… I do like you, lizard, but I can't tell you the real reason we're here. Not yet. What I can tell you is we're not going anywhere soon, we're not pirates and I will explain things to you when I can. Is that good enough for you?”

Her presence is so overwhelming as she talks that you simply nod and she smiles. Not the fake ones she's been putting on since you met her, but a genuine smile. Beneath all those scars, you imagine she was a beauty once. Not someone trying to overplay her gender, either.

“Is there anything else you needed?”

This woman was absolutely crazy.

Insane.

Suicidal.

And you were loving every minute of it.

Elia had commandeered a small sailboat at your mention of wanting her to teach you how to sail. She seemed surprised, considering your race, but obliged with a grin. Her method of sailing is anything but orthodox, but you feel it's something you can pick up on. So long as you survive the trip back, at least.

“Oh look, it's the King's pet lizard.”

Cursing under your breath at your misfortune, you find yourself face to face with the Guard Captain of Solitude. You'd heard stories of him, but none of them really did him justice. He really was more of an asshole than people were saying.

“What are you up to today, lizard?” he looks down on you, his mouth a thin line.

That looks to have been the right thing to say, as he's suddenly grinning.

“I was an adventurer before, you know,” he blurts out, folding his arms. “Was kind of famous, even. Someone on the guard force said I should join up after I got hit in my sword arm, so I'm not as good as I used to be. Still know how to teach, though. You really want to learn, lizard?”

“Yes, sir,” you nod enthusiastically.

“Good, then come find me in the training yard, I'll drill you proper.”

He walks off, leaving you alone amidst the greenery of Solitude. Well, that went pretty well, you think.

For some reason, you decide to make your way to the Blue Palace's throne room. It's a spacious enough area, although you note how well it suits defenders. As you make your entrance and stand to the side, you note a peasant appealing to the High King about something or other. He's ushered out after a quick response and replaced with a particularly well-dressed man. He and the High King quickly fall into discussion about one of the other Jarls and you find yourself intrigued. By the end of it, you've picked up on a few things about Skyrim's politics.

The icy rush of freezing water does a lot to wake you up. It's refreshing, considering how little you get to practice your swimming. You quickly fall into old routines and remember most of your techniques in an incredibly short time. In fact by the time you exit the water, you have a small crowd watching.

You were always pretty good at swimming.

“This is a pretty big cut,” Beirand notes, looking over your mangled armour with a trained eye.

“My opponent was… quite strong,” you admit with a small grin.

“No kidding. Well, I can get this repaired pretty easily. 100 septims for the lot.”

Noting that it's far cheaper than the usual deal, you accept in an instant. It's fun watching Beirand ply his craft, but just from watching you don't pick up anything. Maybe if he were to teach you directly you'd be able to, though.

Armour repaired!

With her legs hanging off the edge of her bed, Liss eyes you thoughtfully as she ponders your request. As far as requests go, you don't find it all that strange. You'd noted how lucky she was in her goings-on in the Palace, so you'd asked her to teach you. There wasn't a good chance that it was actually luck, but maybe she just had an ungodly perception.

“It's kind of hard to teach,” Liss murmurs, wringing her hands. “But I can try. I think Mama would be okay with it.”

Somewhat confused at that, you ask her what she means.

“Just… close your eyes for a few seconds.”

You do as she says, right up until you feel an incredibly cold digit press against your temple. You go to open your eyes, but find them frozen shut. You want to move, but you can't. Everything has stopped.

Eventually the coldness retreats and you open your eyes again. Every thing’s the exact same, except…

As you go in to visit Beirand, you notice that he's actually got another customer for once. You decide to wait it out, but the minutes pass into hours very quickly as the man continues his never-ending order. “If I didn't know any better I'd think you had feelings for me, lizard.”

You scoff as you and Elia lean over the edge of her ship, watching the dock workers go about their business. You'd noted that no one actually seemed afraid of her or her pirates. In fact, the more you saw of them, the less you thought of them as 'pirates' at all.

“Or are you after someone else's tail?” she guesses, nudging you thoughtfully.

“I've got more important things to ponder over,” you respond, leaning forward over the railing.

“Ah, how sombre. Hold your face like that too long and it'll get stuck like that.”

Her cheery attitude is infectious and you soon find yourself laughing and grinning along with her. You have a good time, feeling as though you're a little closer to understand the woman's personality as a whole.

Well, as much as a man can understand a woman anyway.

“Do you think it's foolish to hate your own life?” the High King blurts out as soon as the guards are out of earshot.

Stunned, you think the question over. Unable to come up with an answer that you think would satisfy the King, all you can do is shake your head and respond that you don't know.

“Sometimes I wonder,” he continues, looking straight through you. “It gets so tiring sometimes.”

You hadn't really noticed it when you first met him, but the High King is quite young. Younger than you, definitely.

It must be hard.

For what feels like umpteenth time you check all your gear. You don't really expect the outing to be all that troublesome, especially with Litail by your side. She'd said something about hunting down a pack of rabid animals. With your natural resistance to diseases it was a normal job for you, especially with the pay she mentioned. Agreeing to split it halfway seemed fair, so long as you pulled your own weight.

Well, you definitely planned on doing that.

“I didn't keep you waiting long, did I?”

You turn to your travelling companion, who's decked out in her scale armour. With the huge sword on her back you can't help but grin. With someone like her by your side you couldn't imagine getting attacked by bandits on the road.

“Not long at all,” you shake your head in response, a tiny smile at your lips. “Let's go.”

The pair of you make your way through Solitude's main gate and down the road. It's a clear day, with the sun beating down on you both in a warm fashion. It's a far cry from some of the places you've been to, so you take it in stride. The pair of you make good time on your journey and somehow end up arriving at the cave before the sun's started to set. Litail still has you light a torch, as she can't wield both her sword and the tool at the same time. That limits your own options, but she is the better fighter so you acquiesce.

After only a few steps inside, however, you feel… wrong.

Deciding to remain quiet, you and Litail enter the cave quietly. It doesn't take long for the air to get heavy with the stench of rotting flesh. It's something the both of you are used to, but you wrinkle your nose anyway. So obsessed are you with the smell that you miss the pitfall until it's too late. You miss it entirely due to Litail so casually walking over it, but you step right into the hole and fall. It's not that deep, but the torch you'd been carrying falls from your hand and smacks against the rocks.

The cavern you're now in lights up ever so slightly, reflecting the dulled glow from the torch. Most of the stone is red and… wet. As you stand, you wince and put a hand up to your ribs. You may have broken something.

Lost 1 health!

As your eyes survey the room, two things catch your eye. One is what you can only assume is an exit, a sloping tunnel leading upwards. The other is a… rock? It's huge and unnaturally placed.

You take a step forward, but through some ridiculous blunder you trip and kick the torch. It rolls over the ground and jumps up at the last moment, hitting the 'rock' with a loud echo. Instinctively freezing, you stare with horror as the rock… no, the monster, wakes up.

It unfurls away from its body, extending out to a full length of what you can only assume is about ten feet. Giant pincers make up its mouth, with tiny beady eyes staring down at you. You'd heard tales of this particular monster, but never seen one in your life. Wandering around caves wasn't a favourite pastime of yours, so that seemed sane enough.

But here you were, face to face with a giant Chaurus.

Doing your best not to antagonise the Chaurus, you draw your blade and wait. It doesn't seem interested in attacking you just yet, at least not until a familiar voice calls out to you.

“Sideep! Are you okay down there?” Litail's voice echoes throughout the chamber.

The beast doesn't seem too happy about that.

You're lucky you've already drawn your sword as it comes down on you. You stumble and trip backwards as its pincers try to tear you in half. Through a minor stroke of fortune, you avoid the attack entirely and even manage to tear a gash in its face. This only serves to make it angrier, however, rearing back with a loud chorus of clacking mandibles. Pulling yourself to your feet, you ready your sword again for the next charge.

Luck isn't on your side this time, as the jaws close around your abdomen. With a cry of pain you plunge your sword into the creature's soft neck over and over, trying to make it release you.

Lost 5 health!

However much you try, you can't make it let go of you. The pincers dig deeper and deeper until you hear a wet squelch from behind. It screams, if you could imagine such a thing, and drops you. Blood spills to the ground – your blood.

From behind, you hear Litail roar as well, striking at it from behind. Its mandibles clack together in pain as rivulets of black blood spray onto the nearby rocks. It turns, frustrated at being attacked from two sides.

Taking advantage of the situation, you rush forward with your sword raised. Screaming, you bring it down on the creature's neck. This time, your sword finds an easy spot to slice straight through. The steel is coated in blood, but it's just not enough. Drawing your dagger, you bring it up and stab it over and over again. Over… and over…

“Sideep.”

And over…

“Sideep, we're fine.”

You take a step back, breathing heavily. She looks you over with a quiet smile before bringing you into a tight embrace.

You end up describing Liss to a dozen people, all who don't seem to have any idea what you're on about. More than one is suspicious of you, but to your surprise it's not a merchant that ends up having the information.

“You asking about a foreign beauty, lizard?” a guardsman walks over, pulling off his helmet to reveal a young Nordic man with barely a whisker of facial hair on him. “I think I know who you're talking about, you've been staying with her daughter in the Blue Palace, yeah?”

Too shocked to properly respond, you merely nod and the man grins.

“Yeah, she said she was coming through looking for her. Left a note with me in case the girl came through herself, telling her where to go.”

“Why would she leave a note with a random guard?” you question, suspicious.

“Beats me, she said 'it was fate' or some other such thing. Look, I know you're taking care of the girl, you want it?”

You nod and he digs his hand into his pocket before pulling out a small scrap of paper. It's severely crumpled, suggesting he's had it for a while.

“How long ago did she come through?” you mutter as you peel the paper back so you can read it.

“About a year, I actually forgot until I saw you wandering around the markets asking about her,” he laughs.

As you read over the words, you only end up frowning.

“This isn't the Cyrodilic,” you sigh, folding it and putting it in your own pocket. “Guess I'll just have to hope the girl can read it.”

“Aye, with luck, she might be capable. The name's Fanar, by the way. Glad to help, lizard.”

It was only a few days ago that you'd heard of a Hist Tree growing near Solitude. With the High King's blessing, you got leave for a few days to go and visit it. He at least understood the gravity behind your… 'religion'.

Remembering that the tree was due East, you leave the walls of Solitude with a spring in your step. It's only after you've descended down into the marshes themselves that the blizzard hits. It's harsh, it's freezing – and you're nowhere near wearing enough warm clothing to survive. Even now, you can feel the chill creeping up your spine.

Lost 2 health!

Unwilling to give up, you keep slogging through the freezing winds, water occasionally lapping at your feet. Unfortunately, the winds don't let up and you make little progress.

Lost 1 health!

Cold seeps through your scales as you continue the march, freezing all the while. In your head you can imagine the layout of the map you'd seen before coming and think you're heading in the right direction. It can't be far now…

Lost 2 health!

It's now, so close to collapse, that you stumble straight into the entrance of a cave. The winds aren't so strong here, but you're weak, freezing and feel the need to rest.

Lost 1 health!

But…

It calls to you.

[X] Go into the cave.
[] No, leave.

Unable to resist the call in your current state, you disappear into the welcoming darkness. Slowly, the roaring of the winds from outside die down as you descend further and further. It's a gentle slope, but you fall onto your hands and knees countless times. This singing… those words… you know them. You know them well. Eventually, you come across a giant chamber, with giant holes in the roof of the cave pouring in light. A gentle stream runs around the centre, almost like a little moat.

Then, in the middle of it all…

For some reason, the draw you feel to the tree is…

Different.

There's something more primal forcing you on, making you want to drink of the Hist. It's not your usual drive, similar to addiction, but merely a compulsion to act. Even if you'd wanted to leave, you don't think you'd have had the power to resist the call. Weary from the blizzard outside, you descend down to the tree's level. As you step through the gentle waters, you feel the tiredness wash away like it was nothing. At the bottom is a small wooden tap, with a single jar beside it. With practised hands, you turn it and catch the sweet substance before it hits the ground.

When it touches your lips, you feel pure ecstasy. This was what you should have done from the beginning. You crave this, this… feeling of wholeness.

You need more.

Ah yes, the voice.

“I have a gift for you.”

A gift?

Gasping for air, you shoot up off your back and slam your head straight into the Hist. Cursing, you rub your forehead as you stand.

It's about then that you realise something's wrong.

What happened?

“I'm guessing you're questioning what happened, right?” she smiles, almost reading your thoughts.

“Well, yeah.”

“My Mother sent you back.”

You have a double-take.

“That's your Mother?” you exclaim.

“Mm-hmm, she sent you back 3 years so you can prepare for what's going to happen. I guess she likes you.”

“No?”

“I can't go with you until you explain what's going on,” you huff, standing in place.

“It's because you have a destiny to fulfil,” she starts, staring straight through you. “That's what Mama told me, anyway. She said I should take care of you and make sure you live long enough to get to the end.”

“… but wasn't I supposed to help you look for her?”

“You still are. I see her in my dreams every night, I talk to her, I laugh with her – but it isn't her right here with me. That's what I want. Is that too much to ask?”

It's a simple request from a child, you surmise. So, you decide; no that isn't too much to ask. To spend time with your Mother, whether or not she's some Godlike entity. That does beg the question of what exactly Liss is, but you decide to leave that for now.

“Alright, so I have a destiny. To do what, exactly?”

“That… that I don't know,” she shrugs apologetically. “All I know is you'll have to be ready. Hopefully you can shape your own fate well enough by then.”

Content to let the girl take you, the pair of you trek right through the marsh and continue heading East. It quickly becomes apparent that wherever you're going is nowhere you've been before, as the snows get high enough that you find it hard to walk. Luckily there's no storms, nor are there are any attacks from wildlife. Liss barely even seems to notice, so focused on the path set out in her mind. It all passes in silence, even as the sun begins its eventual descent towards the horizon.

You just think of opening your mouth when a column of smoke catches your eye in the distance. A few minutes later and it's revealed to be coming from a chimney of… a keep? A ruined fort, from a distance, but as you close in you realise it's anything but. People move on the battlements, fitted with what seems to be leather armour and bows slung over their chests. If you didn't know any better, you'd say they were bandits.

But Liss continued to walk forward confidently, so you couldn't quite believe that.

There's a lot of shouting as the pair of you move through the archway. It doesn't seem aggressive, but the few words you catch have you realise that these people don't know who you are. You or Liss. This effect is only compounded when an aging Imperial man approaches the pair of you, flanked by a disturbingly large gold-furred Khajiit and a petite Breton woman. The pair flanking the man seem on edge, the woman's hand clutching at her sword's hilt tightly.

“You two kids lost?” the old man cuts straight to the chase, eyes flitting between you and Liss. “Can't offer you safe passage to wherever it is you're going, but if you need to have a look at some maps-”

“Is this the Free Fort?” Liss cuts him off.

He seems visibly shaken and the woman even inches her sword out of its sheath.

“It is, what business do you have here?”

“We want to join you.”

That definitely shocked them. A few people who had been listening in started to laugh, but a sharp glare from the man cut them off.

“And why should I allow that?”

“Because we have nowhere else to go. You wouldn't turn down an Akavir, would you?”

“An Akavir, don't be silly girl, you're no Akavir,” he smirks, waving his hand dismissively.

“Not me; him.”

All eyes turn to you. Under the weight of so many trained glares you feel yourself shrink a little, but you still manage to stand tall. Figuratively, of course.

“He's certainly no Imperial… hmm. You know what you're getting into asking this of me, girl?”

“Of course, Mama told me to come here,” she explains. “If I ever needed a place to stay, the Free Folk were the only choice for someone like me.”

The Free Folk? That was a name you recognised from your sellsword days. Another life, maybe, but the memories were still fresh. They were a group of bandits, apparently. Very good, too.

“Um, I don't mean to interrupt, but who are the Free Folk, exactly?” you question, definitely interrupting the conversation.

Once again, all eyes turn on you. Whereas before they'd been inquisitive, now they were just… well, stares.

“You went along with this girl not knowing who we were?” the elder frowns, eyes glancing between you. “What sort of trust is that in kids your age?”

“I saved her life, so her saving mine should be normal, right?”

A wave of silence goes over the group.

“I see. Well, you want to know who we are? Most call us bandits and we take that moniker with pride; it's better than the alternative. We're rebels, against the Nords. We believe their way of going about things is archaic and should be changed to better suit everyone.”

“You have groups in places like the Summerset Isles too, right?” Liss cuts in, apparently very knowledgeable on the subject.

“Indeed girl,” the man manages a quick smile in her direction. “That's our biggest group and with a fair few people backing it to boot. This one is entirely self-sufficient, but we have the right people to make it work. Hence why if you want to join we can't really turn you away, so long as you understand our cause. It's a good thing you asked, or you might have thought we were actual bandits, eh?”

Rebels… well, that doesn't entirely conflict with your moral code. But it does remind you of a promise you made to a specific High King. Considering you're backwards in time, you're pretty sure that Torygg's Father is still alive.

“Are you planning on killing the High King?” you venture cautiously.

“Eight Divines, what do you take us for?” the woman at the elder's side speaks up, glaring at you. “We arm ourselves because we must, not because we want to. All we ask is that the Nords take up a democratic system and respect the common people, rather than ponce around in their longhouses.”

“That's quite enough, Aleri,” the man cuts her off. “She speaks the truth, we don't intend to turn this into a War – we'd lose after all. We want to inform the common people and go from there. Do you want to be a part of this?”

Liss looks at you with an expectant glance. She's leaving it up to you?

As the old man leads you into the fort proper, you can't help but marvel at how big it all is. From the outside everything looks like a decrepit old building, but on the inside? Through the main doors were a single flight of stairs and a giant underground dome. Multiple pathways branched off in all directions, but the man takes you down one directly to your left. You note that most of the architecture and metal hint at this being Dwarven-make. A stronghold disguised, perhaps?

Your thoughts are cut off as you move into what you can only assume are living quarters, with bunk beds scattered all over the place. There are a few people sleeping and others sitting around a table, all different races. You'd noticed most of the men on the walls were Nordic, but the people in here didn't look like fighters. Just… people.

“There's a set of beds in the far back that's not claimed,” Ennav states, folding his arms. “Unfortunately we don't have the space to accommodate you your own room… yet. We're still in the progress of expanding.”

Wait.

“You built all this?” you sputter, looking around.

“Not me personally, but this is all new structural work. We have a rather excellent engineer working on it night and day, be sure to introduce yourself when you get the chance.”

With a slight wave, he turns and leaves. He's probably got far more important matters to worry about, so you don't run after him with questions. Liss, however, looks at you expectantly. Shrugging, you leave the room with her in tow. It doesn't take long to get back to the Dome with its branching paths. Now…

As you go down the hallway it quickly becomes apparent that the artificial lighting set on the walls is growing dimmer and dimmer. What started out as a warm yellow light morphs into a dark red, barely giving you enough light to continue the march onward. Just as you consider giving up, you and Liss come out into a room with an impossibly high ceiling. At first you're confused, but as you turn to look back you come to the realisation that you'd been walking downhill the entire time.

With one question solved, you cast a critical glare over the room. Innumerable metal benches piled up with tools, weapons and scrap goes as far as the eye can see. There's no real rhyme or reason to it and you expect the only one that would have any idea on how to navigate the room was its owner.

Which was nowhere to be found.

Liss sticks close to your back as you peer towards the back of the room, but a particularly large pile of junk blocks your view. Just as you're about to try and peek around it, the sound of a door slamming open causes you to jump. Your eyes track the noise, which lead you to turn around completely. Set into the wall by the entrance to the room is a single door, which leads into an even darker room. Standing in it is…

“Newcomers? Welcome!” a particularly… curvaceous Orcish woman greets you, grinning all the while. “Didn't hear about you lot, so you must be volunteers. Come to help me with my work?”

“Ah, well-”

“Oh, no matter. The name's Yazgar, resident engineer and smith. You got something that needs fixing, you come to me; it'd be better than all this other work they pile on me. Can you believe they expect one person to write up all the plans for future expansion in this place? Ridiculous!”

You open your mouth to say something, but eventually close it when you realise you have no idea what to say to that.

“That reminds me, I have a lot of work to do today! Shoo now, before I end up boring you to death.”

And with that, the door slams once again – leaving you and Liss alone in the giant room. You turn to the girl, who simply shrugs.

What a strange woman.

As you and Liss make your way down the wolf tunnel it's obvious how different it is to the other. While the lights don't change, the pathway does. You hadn't noticed on your entry, but it's noticeably wider and has small piles of hay here and there along the sides. As before, it ends in a giant room – except this one couldn't be more different.

There's no roof, instead having the dome open up to the sky. Little light comes in due to the time, so you have to rely on the numerous Dwemer devices to look around. There are at least a half dozen stables scattered about, all likely for different kinds of animals. Apart from the few horses in the nearest one, though, it all seems rather empty. A lone figure is working in one of the empty pens, so you and Liss exchange a quiet look before making your way over.

“Ah, hello?” you call out, hoping to catch the man's attention.

He physically jumps before turning, his eyes wide.

“Eight Divines, don't scare me like that!” he yells. “Oh, wait.”

His eyes look you and Liss over before he almost physically shrinks.

“I don't know you.”

“Ah, no we're new here,” you explain. “I'm Sahlos and this is Liss, we're-”

“I'm Dandre,” he interrupts, turning back to his work. “If you wouldn't mind, I have a lot of things to do before nightfall, so could you just leave me be?”

All is quiet when you and Liss return to the barracks. Most of the other people in the room are already sleeping, making you think that everyone was on a tight work frame. Not wanting to seem irresponsible, you and Liss quickly head to your beds as well. It's a simple bunk frame, to which Liss insists you sleep on the top mattress. You don't think to ask her why as you slip under the simple sheet and close your eyes.

You have a dreamless sleep, much to your relief. Liss is still asleep as you drop down to ground level, but before you can wake her the Breton woman from yesterday taps you on the shoulder.

“Ennav wants to see you,” she states simply. “Alone.”

Before you can ask anything, she takes you by the shoulder and pulls you out of the room. Well, you can only hope that Liss doesn't wake up before you get back. You're brought to the main dome, where Ennav is standing by with a small group of people. A couple of faces you recognise – Yazgar and Dandre, while the other two are a mystery to you. As soon as you're close enough to talk, the woman lets go and pushes you forward a little before taking a step back.

“Thank you, Aleri,” Ennav nods courteously before turning his attention to you. “You, what was your name again?”

“Sahlos, sir.”

“Sir?” the older man chuckles. “Well, it could be worse. After giving it some thought I decided against putting you into the usual labour. These four have been hounding me for an assistant a piece since we started up here and you're young enough to learn. Because you've been a good lad up till' now, I'll even let you choose.”

Choose? As in-

“This here is Yazgar,” he starts with the curvaceous Orc from yesterday. “She's our resident engineer and smith, looking for an apprentice to do the simple stuff so she can focus on the big projects. Next up is Dandre, needs a stable hand to take care of the animals while he focuses on training them.”

Next up, then, are the people you don't know.

“This is Shabael,” he moves to a hooded man's side. “He's our… intrigue specialist, wants someone to deal with the paperwork and learn the ropes. More hands on the others, might even give you a chance to leave the fort on business with him.”

You catch that the man's skin is ashen and his eyes deep red as he nods to you; a Dunmer.

“Lastly, here's Erissa. She's our research and development, responsible for getting all this Dwemer machinery up and running. A total genius, one-of-a-kind.”

“Please, you're flattering me,” she smiles at him, then at you. You notice her pointed ears and fair skin. An Elf, but… which kind?

“You'd be helping her with her research in whatever way she deems fit. She'd probably be able to tell you more after you choose.”

Of all the things you notice on the path towards the laboratories is that it's unusually cold. Even with the now blue light, that's all you can focus on. Erissa notices your discomfort rather early on, patting you on the shoulder.

“I'll give you a coat when we arrive,” she apologises. “It's necessary for the tools I'm working with.”

“You don't work with forges and smelters?” you question, thinking back on your few experiences with smithing.

As she starts laughing, you feel as though you've said something stupid.

“Not quite. I managed to repair a few Dwemer devices that have… helped speed things up considerably. I tried to convince that Yazgar to use a few of them, but she's stuck in her ways. With you helping out I think we could go places!”

She doesn't have a chance to say anything else as you exit out into the lab's main chamber. Your breath catches in your throat as your eyes try to take everything in.

It's…

Amazing.

You'd rarely seen Dwemer ruins before this, but you can't imagine they'd look better than this room. Remnants of creations were scattered around, taking away from the overall aesthetic – but set into the walls and scattered here and there…

“I brought my life's work with me,” she explains, walking forward with her hands clasped behind her back. “I've made so many of these constructs that it's second nature to me now. My parents… were very insistent that I learn young.”

“Wait, you said made, so you…?”

“Most of these are made from scratch, yes.”

“Wow,” is all you can manage.

Now you understood why Ennav called the woman a genius. She simply shakes her head and smiles, though. As if… as if it was natural for her to be this way. You weren't sure if that counted as being humble or secretly bragging, though.

“Now, as Ennav said you'll be assisting me with my research. I have no particular field I need assistance with more than the others, so please take your pick.”

You imagine that whatever you choose will end up being what you learn the most about.

After hearing your request, Liss dragged you through the halls of the Free Fort to a secluded room. It was totally empty, bar a few cobwebs here and there. Rather than lighting from the Dwemer system that you'd gotten so used to the past few days, there was an actual window letting some of the dulled sunlight in. Despite your insistence that she was still a child to you, Liss looked… rather stunning.

Despite it being a day off, you find yourself trekking down the long hall towards the research lab. Erissa had interested you since you'd arrived, and not just because your ages were similar. She was… no ordinary Mer, you'd realised. Definitely not Altmer, nor Wood Elf. Too fair skinned to be a Dunmer and in no way was she Orcish. Her understanding of Dwemer technology was that of a savant, so much so that you couldn't chalk it up to chance.

As you arrive in the dome, you notice Erissa leaning over a table, lost in thought. You want to call out to her, but you can't find it in you. She's so lost in her work that you can only watch as she suddenly jumps and plucks a quill from its inkwell. Her hand arcs over the paper gracefully as she draws what you can only assume is some sort of plan.

This process goes on for the better part of an hour, you watching her as she works on whatever it is she's doing. Eventually, she seems to slow down until she sighs loudly and turns. Your eyes lock for an instant before she looks surprised.

“Ah, Sahlos; how long have you been there?” she asks innocently.

“Well… a while,” you admit, rubbing your head awkwardly. “Perhaps an hour or so.”

“An hour?! I'm so sorry! If I'd known I would have stopped straight away, please, you must be tired.”

Before you can explain that it was more your own fault, she takes your hand and drags you straight to a side room. You'd seen her disappear in there after your work, so you could only assume it was her room. Much to your embarrassment she doesn't even seem to care as she pulls you 'cross the threshold and into a…

This isn't what you expected at all.

You'd been thinking she was the sort to sleep amidst a ruin of Dwemer artifacts and technology, but it was far more basic than that. A normal bed, wooden drawers, a small washbasin and a walled off section in the back that you couldn't quite see into. All with a warm fireplace on the side, with two chairs in front of it. Not a piece of Dwemer technology in sight.

“Come on, have a seat,” she insists, pulling you over. “I always end up keeping people waiting, it's a flaw.”

“I think a genius like you deserves a bit of time to themselves, though,” you smile as you sit.

“You're too kind. I'm not really all that smart, you know. My Father was far better than I. I just do my best to honour his memory.”

She seems a little sad talking about him, much to your dismay.

“I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bring up bad memories,” you apologise, lowering your head.

Surprised, she shakes her head and takes a seat across from you.

“No, I didn't mean- I'm fine.”

An awkward silence hangs over the pair of you for a few tense moments.

“You came to see me about something?”

“Ah, not really, I just wanted to see you.”

“… to see me?”

To your surprise, she breaks out into a blush before looking away.

“I'm flattered, but-”

“Not like that!” you clarify, waving your hands in front of you. “It's just… I don't know many people my age, so I thought it would be nice to get to know you.”

“That could still mean the same thing, you know,” she points out with a small smile. “But I guess I understand what you mean. It must be hard, coming to a place like this.”

“I've always been alone before, so if anything this is a welcome change.”

She raises an eyebrow at you, but when you don't expand she goes back to her usual smile.

Suppressing the urge to let out a grumble, you turn to leave and explore somewhere else. A short bark makes you turn back, just in time for a large dog to descend from on high on top of you.

-?!

It takes all of a second for it to basically pin you down and bring its jaws down on you. You bring your arms up like a cross over your face and neck, but it just settles for that instead. Searing hot pain is all that fills you as it tears straight through the soft flesh, eliciting a loud scream from you. The pain doesn't get any better as someone tears the creature off of you.

Before you can say anything, another man brings his sword down on the creature's neck. It takes more than a little effort to not weep for the creature, even if it had attacked you. Blood still pouring from the puncture wounds on your arms, you're shuffled off back into the Fort. You doubt they'll be letting you out to do what you want without an escort, now.

It's early morning when Liss shakes you from your slumber. After a few tired words it becomes apparent she wants to explore the fort with you. Considering what happened last time you somewhat doubt the men will let you explore outside. With that in mind…

“So, what happened to your arms?”

The girl looks at you curiously as you rub the bandages in thought. It probably wasn't a good idea to lie to her, so you sigh and explain it briefly. Liss simply nods and takes a few steps to get ahead of you before turning 'round, walking backwards as you make your way through the tunnel.

“So what have we learned?” she sings with a big smile.

“Not to aggravate dogs?” you venture.

“Mm, close enough, I guess.”

She turns back and you sigh. The pair of you make general smalltalk about your time in the Fort up until you come to the main Dome. Liss seems to know where she wants to go as she immediately starts down a tunnel with no sign on the top. Having already agreed to her little adventure, you start after her. The tunnel itself gets rather dark extremely fast, but Liss continues on unperturbed.

“Ah, Liss?”

“Oh, right,” she says, as if having forgotten something. With a quiet clack, the sound of flint hitting together echoes twice before a torch appears in the girl's hand.

“Where did you even get that?” you exclaim.

“You shouldn't ask a lady about her secrets!”

Groaning, you move up to her side so as to get the most out of the light and continue on. You walk for what feels like the better part of an hour, seeing nothing but the tunnel. Right as you think to say you should go back, a breeze rolls over you. The flame wavers for a few moments, but stays steady.

Ignoring the ominous breeze, you and Liss continue on. The cause is quickly revealed to be a cave in, with a few holes amidst the rubble that shows the outside world. Another gust comes through, nearly putting out the torch light, but it stays steady. Curious, you step up to the remains of the cave-in and pick amidst the rubble. Liss stands back, watching. After moving a few rocks, however, you stop.

There's a hand.

It's cold and pale, but it hasn't decayed yet. This cave-in must only be a few days old then. Muttering a short few words of prayer, you continue to move the rubble right up until you hear a hacking cough. You turn back to Liss, whose eyes are wide with surprise. Without a second thought, she drops the torch and comes to your side to help you throw the rocks aside. It still takes the good part of ten minutes, but the form of a young man is slowly revealed.

He's gaunt and obviously barely clinging to life; but he's still alive. You don't have any food or water to offer him, and so far from the others-

“There's a small sack over here,” Liss murmurs as she pulls a small cloth bundle over. “It's… full of bread, cheese and I think there's a flagon here.”

“Is it still good?”

“I think so, the bread isn't even hard.”

Thanking your luck, you pull the flagon out and pop the top off. Placing it by the man's lips and tipping up, you watch as the clear water pours out through his parched lips. It doesn't take long for him to realise what's happening and suckle at it earnestly, leaving you feeling accomplished.

This was probably going to take a while.

“I owe you two my life,” the man places his hands on the ground and lowers his head. “I'll never be able to repay you.”

“I'm just glad we were able to help,” you admit. “You still don't think you can walk?”

“No, my leg is...”

You all look at it, mangled and torn. It's a miracle with a wound like that he'd lived, but you'd seen people survive far worse yourself. Liss didn't look all that surprised either, it was more a matter of timing. He likely would have died of thirst before anything else.

“Sahlos will just have to support you back, then,” Liss announces, clapping her hands.

“Wait-”

“I guess that'll have to do,” the man nods. “My name is Eric, by the way.”

Making a mental note to get Liss back for this, you slip the man's arm around you and help him to his feet. It was going to be a long way back.

Dragging a man along nearly doubles the trip's time, as you have to make sure you don't aggravate his wounds any further. When you eventually exit out into the main dome, you're greeted by Ennav flanked by his two lieutenants. At first you see he has an angry glare, but after noticing the man clinging to your side his expression changes considerably.

“Eric?” he mutters, face paling. “We thought you were still on patrol.”

“The tunnel collapsed on the way back,” he deadpans. “Everyone else got crushed, I was on the edge of it.”

“Tunnel of death,” Do'zahr shakes his head.

“True enough, that thing was cursed the moment we found it. Did you find anything on your mission, though?”

“There was a… perhaps it would be best to continue this somewhere away from these children, Ennav.”

“Of course.”

With a nod from the older man, you allow Aleri to step forward and take his shoulder. You briefly notice a single tear roll down her cheek.

“We'll talk about this after we sort out what happened,” Ennav nods to you and Liss. “Head back to the barracks for now.”

After a while of waiting, Aleri comes back to drag you and Liss out. You're taken up the tunnel but turn off just before the main dome down a smaller hallway. There are a number of beautiful doors here, and you're taken to the biggest. She opens it for you, but steps back, nodding at you. Taking the hint, you and Liss cross the threshold.

It reminds you of Torygg's room in the Blue Palace, with how lavish everything is. Beautiful warm rug beneath your feet, an inviting fireplace and a beautifully crafted desk. There's five chairs in front of it, one already occupied by Eric who you note has a metal contraption around his leg. Ennav is sitting behind it and signals for you to both take a seat.

“Normally I'd punish you for… well, exploring,” Ennav admits with a defeated sigh. “But I can't ignore the fact that you saved Eric's life. By the time we would have sent out a search party he would be long gone, as shameful as it is to admit. So, ask anything of me and I'll do what I can to give it to you.”

This was…

This felt eerily similar to that offer from High King Torygg, minus the 'ask anything you want' part. You better come up with something good.

“So you want to be in the know, then?” Ennav leans forward. “You know what that means, right?”

Eric lets out a short bark of laughter as your face falters.

“That's right. If we tell you what's going on, you won't be able to leave. Having you as a part of the Free Folk on a permanent basis is fine by me, but you have to be sure of your decision.”

“You said you trust me, right?” you ask, placing your hands on the desk. “Why can't I be a part of this too, then?”

Eric barks out a quick chuckle.

“Let the boy stay, Ennav,” he grins. “He saved my life, didn't he?”

“Very well then,” Ennav nods, sighing. “So, to catch you two up, let me explain. That tunnel led to a small cave system that opens out to the sea, which we'd been using as a dock. It was how we moved most of our supplies, communicating via traders on their way to Solitude. The system is led by a particularly over-the-top woman, but that's not the problem. What worried us was the lack of communication this past month. We sent Eric and his team to investigate, however...”

“The place was empty,” Eric continues for him, shaking his head. “Total ghost town. Some of the shacks even had food on the plates, rotted. It's like they all just up and walked off in the middle of dinner. No signs of a fight, no blood, nothing. Not a chance that they all up and left, so there's something else at play here.”

“Magic?” you venture.

“Who knows. Might explain the phantom cave-in, you and the girl were only a few hundred meters off the cave system where you found me. Had barely even started on the trip back when we got hit, I was lucky I made it out with only a busted leg.”

The thing that interests you most about this is…

For some reason, you feel you know the woman who was running the business at the docks, but no matter how much you think on it…

Yeah, nothing.

“Well, that's the entire situation,” Ennav sighs. “Got anything out of it?”

“Not at the moment, but I'll think on it,” you promise.

“Good enough, Aleri will take you to your new quarters so just follow her when you leave.”

You nod and stand, as does Liss. Ennav looks happy with the outcome despite you not really helping out, so you can only guess that this was more or less what he had in mind all along. You don't think there's much you can really add as a 'member' of the Free Folk, so understanding his train of thought isn't really something you can fathom. As you leave the room, Aleri looks you up and down before huffing and starting down the hall.

There's no way she could have heard what was going on in the room, but even so she leads you to a door and knocks on the wood.

“This one's for the girl.”

She takes a few steps more to another door and taps it next.

“This one's for you, boy.”

Without anything else to say, she turns and starts her way back up the hall. You could probably try to talk to her so you can mend this rift between you two, but…

You chuckle nervously, maybe she didn't like the joke.

“Looks mostly like scrap metal, mixed with some advanced stuff I have no idea what to call,” you add.

“Close enough,” she sighs. “Most of this stuff is advanced tech, but it looks like most of it never ended up working. As you know, Dwemer technology was powered via Soul Gems, but that entire line of thinking is archaic. The Dwemer were on the verge of new technology, which is what we're going to try and achieve here.”

“You want to do something that the best engineers the Dwemer had couldn't?”

“Exciting, isn't it?”

And so it begins that you and Erissa tinker with the old machines in hopes of figuring out what the Dwemer were trying to do. After a few days, it's almost like Erissa is about to give up.

But you make a discovery.

Accidentally, of course.

You're carrying one of the 'advanced spider bots' over to a workbench at Erissa's command when you trip. It falls and lands near a small work bot, which turns to examine the device before powering up its Soul Gem for a charge. Erissa doesn't have time to tell it to stop before it zaps its inactive brother. You both stare in wonder as the whirring of gears and telltale signs of a running machine hit both of your ears.

“That… doesn't have a Soul Gem in it, right?” Erissa confirms with you.

After a few minutes of going over the plans, you eventually realise that you can't make out any of the words. Asking Erissa to come over reveals that they're about some sort of device related to storing energy and utilising it whenever the device needs it. It's ingenious, really, but where does the energy come from and how to use it properly?

Together, you and Erissa go through a ludicrous number of tests with a gargantuan sum of different materials. The concept of conductivity isn't lost on you as you test and eventually you settle on a mixture of orichalcum and copper to form the wiring system. After a quick chat with Ennav it turns out that the Free Folk are in the middle of trying to find another way to get resources after the docks incident. Land-based trade routes are dangerous and easy to spot, after all. Maybe you could help out in some way?

“So, you want to know about the language of the Dwarves, huh?”

You nod enthusiastically, which seems to elicit a big smile from Erissa.

“Well, I'll do my best, but no promises! A lot of it is gibberish and hard to understand at first, so you'll just have to persist,” she states rather seriously. “Not to mention you'll have to work at it as often as you find time.”

After giving it some thought you give her a quiet nod and her grin gets wider.

“Good! Well, let's get started, shall we?”

True to her words, it becomes apparent that learning a language like this one is… extraordinarily hard. Your brief escapade with Dovah feels like nothing compared to Erissa's lessons and you end up leaving with a lot of words ringing around your head that you have no idea what they really mean. Still, you feel like you've made some minor progress.

Language gained!
Dwemer Language – Non-Existent

While browsing the library, you stumble across two books related to dreams and being visited by others. Ennav ends up suggesting one that seems based on trying to manifest your own consciousness into the Daedric realm while sleeping, which you quickly discard. The first, on prophecies and seeing into the future doesn't seem likely either. So, you end up studying the book related to Vaermina.

Vaermina is, as most know, the Daedric Prince of Nightmares. There's far more than that listed on the pages you flick through, however. Psychological terror, torment, evil omens and even stealing memories. Records of Vaermina seem to show the Prince as a female, which would match the woman from your visions.

Some of the book is written in a script you don't recognise, which Ennav merely shakes his head over. If it's a language he doesn't recognise…

Ambition gained!
Learn how to read ????: The language that you came across… you want to learn how to read it. Rewards: +20 Destiny Points, plus trait.

After a particularly boring day in the lab, you file into the large mess hall. Most of the tables are stone, with benches carved from a similar slab. As uncomfortable and unappealing as the aesthetic of the room is, it had really grown on you. Somehow. To your surprise, though, there's only one other person despite it being about the time for people to begin filing in for dinner. You grab a small plate and pile on some random food items before making your way over to reveal it as…

Dandre.

He's looking forlornly at his plate, as though he's deep in some unhappy thought. Hoping to cheer him up, you tap him on the shoulder. As he looks up at you, you give him a bright smile.

“Howl you doing?”

He blinks.

“Having a ruff day?”

He blinks again. Just as you think you've made a mistake, his expression morphs into one of joy as he falls into a fit of laughter. Thankful, you take a seat next to him.

“I didn't think I'd be cheered up with puns,” he manages through laughs. “Thank you.”

“Glad to be of service,” you admit, shovelling a small spoon of food into your mouth. “You want to talk about it?”

“No, no, it's nothing that bad. I appreciate the thought though.”

It's almost like he's forgotten he was ever angry with you. Score!

Relationship changed!
Dandre Gansley (Acquaintance, +5 to social rolls)

You end up in front of Eric's door at his request, but a quick knock reveals that he's not in. You initially set up to wait it out, but after checking to see if the door is unlocked it slowly opens. Curiosity overwhelms you and you make your way inside, revealing the intrepid explorer's room. There's the same stack of books and no sign of the owner.

Unable to stop yourself, you make your way over to the pile and look at the title of the topmost book. It's…

It's blank?

Confused, you pick the book up. As you turn the cover, all you see are blank pages. You flick through it, until-

Words start appearing.

It-

Through no small amount of will, you slam the book shut and let it drop to the floor. Your breathing comes in ragged gasps as you collapse to the floor, thoroughly exhausted. When Eric eventually shows up, you can't even hear him as he tries to talk to you. You're escorted back to your room.

The feeling never really leaves you.

Trait gained!
Strange Feeling (Random chance to become exhausted, nullifying an action): Every now and then, you find yourself collapsing on the spot. No one knows what's wrong with you…

You spend the night with Erissa at her behest. It's… rather educational in its own way.

You never knew that spending an entire evening talking to and learning about someone could make you feel so happy with your life.

Trait gained!
Content with your Relationship (+5 to all rolls): So long as you and your significant other – Erissa – remain happy with each other, you'll keep this Trait.

On the way to Ennav's room, you find yourself pouring over your thoughts. Coming up with another way to get resources to the Free Fort wouldn't be easy, but you thought you'd come up with something pretty clever.

Which was?

At your own behest, Erissa had come with you to help explain the idea. As the both of you file into Ennav's office, he almost groans in expectation.

“If you've brought her along, I imagine it's going to have something to do with your constructs?” he guesses, leaning back with a rather tired look.

“It does, but!” Erissa starts, just as Ennav groans again. “I wasn't the one that came up with it, Sahlos did.”

“Oh? Well, let's hear it then.”

“Well, with our latest advances in automatons, we've made a batch that could effectively work as worker bots in a number of environments. I thought if we had a skeleton crew work with them, it would be entirely possible to move resources through the marshes with little to no effort, effectively making it possible to utilise the inland traders,” you explain with a confident air.

“That's...” Ennav trails off, thinking. “Actually quite genius, now that I give it some thought. We'd never been able to utilise the traders proper, but if I pulled some strings with the main branch… yes, this could work extremely well. Maintaining ship-based supply lines is a hefty investment, so this would allow us more money to spend on actual supplies instead. You can supply all the necessary materials and expenses for the constructs, Erissa?”

“Of course! I'm still working through all supplies from the ruin we stumbled across,” she admits with a small smile.

“Good, well then, make it happen.”

“So, you fell in love with the research girl, I see.”

Well, way to lay it out in the open. Liss doesn't look angry, more bemused than anything else. It's… an odd expression to see on a girl of her age, now that you give it some thought. Some of the responses you'd been giving were well beyond your years too, but considering your circumstances it made some semblance of sense. Whereas this was just worrying.

“I guess Erissa and I are in love, yes,” you frown, scratching your head. “I don't see why it's important, though.”

“Oh no, there's nothing wrong with it,” Liss adds with an almost sadistic grin. “It's just that getting too close to her might end up poorly for you. I'm glad she'll find happiness before the end, but...”

“Ashley, save me!”

You pull the rock from your pocket and throw it at Liss, much to her surprise. What follows is…

Nothing?

You look at Liss closely, only to notice her face seems… frozen in place. A quick look around confirms this as Ashley, the rock, is floating in mid-air between the two of you.

What on Nirn is going on?

“What a chain of events you've gotten yourself into,” a voice sighs dramatically.

“Who's there?” you respond in an instant, looking around but seeing nothing.

“It's Ashley, silly!”

Your eyes turn towards the rock, still floating in mid-air.

No way.

Not a chance.

Right?

“You picked me up back outside Solitude,” the voice continues as if it was the most natural thing to admit to. “You had no idea what I was back then, but you held onto me through and through.”

“But… you're just a rock,” you deadpan.

“Am I? Am I really?”

It slowly dawns on you that, yes, this is actually happening. Ashley isn't just a rock. It's…

What?

The world shifts ever so slightly and everything seems to return to normal. Liss is looking at you expectantly, as she was about a minute ago. It looks as though time has gone back a few steps. But… what just happened?

Destiny Token gained!

“What just happened?”

“What do you mean?” Liss cocks her head to the side. “You've been standing there quiet for a while now.”

“Well, I guess… what do you mean, anyway?” you frown, recalling what she'd said before the incident with Ashley.

“Well, she's going to die, of course!”

“You mean Erissa?”

“Her, and all the others. It's their fate.”

But…

“Then what about my fate, Liss?”

She looks taken aback at that, but recovers quickly.

“Your fate? Well… you can do whatever you want, you don't really have one.”

“So does that mean I can change other people's fates?”

Liss' mouth opens to respond, but before she can everything crumbles. The walls fall in on you and you scream.

And scream.

And scream.

You wake with a start, sweat pouring off your body. Luckily, it seems like you'd managed to not transfer the scream from your dream into reality. Still, it looks like you'd managed to succeed in having a successful dream, but…

What did it mean?

And why did you see Liss, rather than the woman?

So many questions, and not enough answers.

It's the day of your trip with Shabael! You'd been sent to the armoury to gear up, which means you have a few choices to make!

You'll wear:
[] Just plain clothes to deal with the freezing marshes
[] Some leather armour in case you're attacked

And wield:
[] A longsword
[] A bow
[] A shortsword and dagger

You immediately gravitate towards a familiar looking leather cuirass, which you end up having to get some help from the person on duty to fit the straps to your size. It doesn't take long for you to move over to the weapons and pick out a steel shortsword & dagger, which you also end up needing help to fit over the armour. He gives you an apologetic look, which you can only smile back at him for. A lot of the gear is made for an adult Nord, really, so refitting it down to your size is kind of expected.

As soon as you're finished, you make your way out of the armoury and straight into the waiting figure of Shabael. He's still wearing his customary robes, but as he walks you can hear the tell-tale clink of armour beneath it. Strapped to his side is a single blade, the material hidden by the rather plain looking sheath. His eyes look over your choice of armament for a few moments before he nods, content. After a few brief goodbyes and a particularly long embrace from Erissa, you and the Dark Elf depart from the Free Fort through the gate you'd initially entered from.

It had been in the back of your mind that this would technically be a perfect time to escape, but they did still have Liss. If you'd had any intent to leave, though, you're sure she could escape on her own. Still… you've had no reason to want to, and now you have Erissa.

“You're dressed rather lightly for an expedition like this,” the Dark Elf points out as you descend down into the marshes. “I didn't know Akaviri had such thick skin.”

“I just deal with the cold really well,” you admit with a proud smile. “It's not all that special.”

“If you say so, lad.”

Silence falls over the pair of you for the better part of an hour as you pick your way into the depths of the marshland. After you've settled in to the rhythm of the walk, however, you try to spark up the conversation again.

“So, how did you end up with the Free Folk, anyway?”

He seems to stop for a split second, as if struck, before continuing on like nothing had happened.

“It's not all that special, really,” he responds with a sigh. “I had nowhere else to go after something that happened, but they took me in. I ended up with the Skyrim branch after some issues with the main one, but I don't have any complaints.”

“So what happened before the Free Folk?”

A pained look creeps over his face.

“A lot of things, child, a lot of things.”

He hasn't really said all that much, but despite that, you feel a lot closer to him now than you were before.

You and Shabael make good time through the marshes; amazingly so, even. By the time you arrive at the road snaking up to the outer gates of Solitude the sun has only just started to descend in the sky. Usually it would take the better part of a day to even consider making the trip, but it seemed that you and the Dunmer worked well together.

At the gates, the guards bow at the sight of you and open it before you even get close enough to be truly recognisable. Was Shabael really that important? You don't question it, though. Not your place to know things like that, you imagine. As you make your way into the city proper a lot of sights come as familiar to you. The Winking Skeever, Radiant Rainments… all still there. It's comforting in its own way.

“We'll be making our way to the Jarl's residence, so just keep your head down and do what I say,” Shabael murmurs to you.

After a quick nod in response, he sets out on a brisk pace through the rest of the city, cutting your sightseeing short. It's barely any time at all before you're at the familiar Blue Palace, in all its glory. Unlike the other time you were here, the guards aren't nodding in recognition of you, but rather your companion. Just who was he, that everyone had such respect for him?

Even as you file into the building itself, people are bowing and moving aside so he can move straight through into the audience chamber. As you ascend the stairs, however, the sight that greets you is one you aren't familiar with.

Or, well, the man isn't at least.

Rather than the soft-hearted Torygg that you knew, it's a large Nord with a small yet honest smile plastered on his face. A long scar runs down the right side of his face, but it's anything but ugly. If anything, it only adds to his rugged charm.

“I thought you'd be arriving later this evening, old friend,” the High King greets your companion as he stands. “Come, I'll put the rest of my appointments on hold for now.”

Uh… what do?

“Ah, actually, I was wondering if I could meet Torygg,” you blurt out just as the pair move to leave.

All eyes turn to you.

It's extremely uncomfortable, but through no small amount of will you push through it.

“I heard he's a bit younger than me, right? It might be good to have him interact with another kid, and all.”

Silence continues to drift over the room before the High King breaks out into a smile. A collection of held-in breaths are released as he walks over to you and slaps you on the shoulder.

“I think that would be excellent, boy! Any friend of this gentleman here is a friend of mine,” he states happily, causing a nervous shuffle from the Dunmer. “I'll have Sybille show you the way.”

As he commanded, a woman breaks free from the group of retainers to take you by the hand. You note, funnily enough, that it's ice cold. She doesn't say a word as you make your way through the Blue Palace and towards the royal chambers. You know the way already, of course, but you can't point that out to her. It doesn't take long to arrive at Torygg's quarters, where you stumble across the boy in the middle of reading a book.

“Torygg? You have a guest?” the woman calls out, speaking for the first time.

Rather than the usual tone you heard her take before, this one is warm and kind. It's… almost unsettling, knowing who she is.

“Hm?” he looks up, revealing his young childish face. “A guest?”

“This is...”

“Sahlos,” you smile as you stand forward, bowing. “A pleasure to meet you.”

“Ah!” he exclaims as he stands up to bow as well. “Likewise!”

“Torygg, you don't need to bow back,” Sybille groans.

“It's fine, you can leave us, if it please you.”

The woman nods and makes her departure. There was a lot of trust here, leaving a young man with a sword alone with the crown-prince. Still, that must just be the amount of power Shabael commanded.

Or maybe you weren't as alone as you previously thought.

“So, Torygg, what's it like being… well, you?”

He seems taken aback at that, but after a few moments of consideration he smiles.

“It's pretty good, I spend most of my time studying and training. It's a tiring life, but it's what's expected of me. One day I'll have to take over my Father, so that the Jarls think our family is worthy of leading Skyrim.”

That's… a lot of burden for one so young to carry.

“Would you like to play a game, perhaps?”

“That sounds like fun! What did you have in mind?” the young prince cocks his head, still smiling.

“Hrm… how about a game of riddles?”

“Okay! You go first.”

“It has a tail, a side and a head I call it what I call a snake, it has no body and it is dead.”

“Oh, that's from a book of riddles!” Torygg exclaims. “But… I don't remember the answer.”

“It must be a drake,” you recite with a grin.

“Ooh, okay, one point to you. Now for me… I like this one; Turn us on our backs, and open up our stomachs. You will be the wisest of men, though at start a lummox.”

You're stumped, you can't even think of an appropriate answer so you merely shake your head.

“A book!” Torygg grins, lifting up both his hands with one finger outstretched on both hands. “Your turn.”

“If you lie to me I will slay you with my sword. If you tell me the truth, I will slay you with a spell.”

“You will slay me with a sword!”

Oh, well, you tried. Torygg raises a finger on his left hand.

“My turn! It occurs once in every minute, twice in every moment, and yet never in one hundred thousand years.”

“The letter M!” you exclaim, with a grin.

Torygg grins as well, as he raises a finger on his right hand. You're tied. It's time for your best riddle-!

“A natural state, I'm sought by all. Go without me, and you shall fall. You do me when you spend, and use me when you eat to no end.”

“...”

Torygg looks genuinely focused on the question, until…

“Energy?”

“No, it's balance,” you proclaim with a grin.

“Ah, you got me!” he laughs, lifting the third and final finger on his right hand. “Alright, you win. Winner takes all the spoils, I suppose.”

Winner takes all the spoils, huh…?

“Alright, I want your shoes.”

Torygg blinks a few times.

“Um...”

“Your shoes! Hand 'em over!”

Rather confusedly, Torygg slips his pair of narrow tapered shoes off and hands them over to you. Shoes get! Fortunately, your nature denies holding onto the shoes, however-

LardDude burns 20 Destiny Points to spawn an assassin in Torygg's closet!

A man jumps out of the closet! He's clad in glass armour from head to toe, with a brilliant glass shortsword and steel dagger in hand. It looks a little mismatched, but you're too worried about him charging over with an intent to kill you. In a panic, you throw Torygg's shoes at the assassin, through no small amount of dumb luck, you manage to hit him both in the face and in the arm, effectively blinding him for a moment and forcing him to drop his dagger.

In an attempt to catch him off guard, you charge forward and unsheathe your blade. There's a cry from them, but you still manage to thrust your sword forward. It sinks deep into their unprotected flesh on the inner side of their leg, but as you pull it free you note that it wasn't a particularly damaging wound. In fact, the assassin even manages to bring their blade down on your shoulder, sinking the green metal deep into your flesh. With a yelp, you jump backwards, but the damage has already been done.

Damage taken!
28 damage taken!

Injury sustained!

The assassin moves forward to strike at you, but the wound is obviously slowing them down. You easily parry the blow with your dagger and even manage to get a strike in at their side. Your shortsword pierces the brittle armour, hitting flesh and eliciting a hiss from the person underneath all that green.

“Guards!” you scream with all your might, hoping that somebody hears your call.

Anticipating your move, the assassin steps inside your guard and shoves their sword straight through your stomach. In the same movement, knowing you can't dodge, you thrust your own sword through the assassin's other shoulder. You're standing body to body with this person, and…

Gods does it hurt.

Damage taken!
20 damage taken!

Serious injury sustained!

With a fury you didn't know you had, you bring your dagger up and stab at the assassin's face. A feminine scream emits as you keep stabbing, and stabbing, and stabbing…

“Sahlos?”

You come back to reality over the corpse of the assassin, who now without the helmet is unrecognisable due to what you'd done. Resisting the urge to throw up, you take a step back and realise that there's still a very major problem. That is, the sword jutting out from your stomach. Almost out of pure reaction, you pull the sword free of its fleshy prison. Blood starts to pour out and even as you press a roll of cloth handed to you from Torygg to your stomach, it doesn't get any better. Words pour out from the crown Prince's mouth, but you don't hear any of them.

You fall into the abyss.

You wake up in… a place.

A place that you're familiar with.

Buildings that don't make sense and an overwhelming presence crushes you as you look around. Yes, this is the place of your dreams.

“I see you made a few bad decisions, young one,” the voice says to you.

You instinctively turn to look for the source of it, but find nothing.

“You dragged another into your destiny, even though you knew you wouldn't truly win.”

“It was my only choice,” you respond.

“No, you had an ample number of choices – but you chose to make a stupid decision. Really, do you have any idea how much trouble you're making for me right now?”

“Fight me.”

“Excuse me?” the voice responds, glowering with anger.

“Fight me!” you yell.

“Okay then, if you wish.”

The world shifts from a grey expanse of twisted buildings to a glaring desert. Warm sand heats up your feet, even through your shoes. In front of you stands a woman (http://i.imgur.com/iXc2e3E.png). At a glance she doesn't seem threatening, but the aura surrounding her… is…

“You wanted to fight? So be it. You may have the first strike.”

You slowly walk up towards her, climbing the dune she'd decided to take her stance upon. She makes no attempt to attack you as you close in on her. Even as you place your hand on the back of her head and push it towards yours, she does nothing.

Not even as you press your lips up against hers.

Really, it's nothing like what you were expecting. Kissing a God is actually kind of worse than kissing a real woman, now that you've had a chance to try it out. Maybe she's just frigid? You pull your face back from hers, and she regards you with a strange look.

“I think I've changed my mind,” she says.

“About what?” you inquire.

“I don't think I'm going to kill you,” she responds with a sickeningly sweet smile. “I think I'm going to make you my servant.”

Oh.

“What type of servant?” you ask, not really wanting to know the answer.

“When you give men free will, they tend to make stupid decisions. So, I'm going to take away your free will and force you to do whatever I want,” she states with a smile that threatens to consume your very sight.

Through a reservoir of will you didn't know you possessed, you manage to shake off her seemingly loving stare. With what remains of your will, you manage to open your lips to say what may very well be the last words you ever say.

“Can I have another chance?”

Her smile turns sadistic.

“I don't think so.”

You don't even have a chance to move before she's in front of you. Her slender lips brush against your neck and…

All that remains of Sahlos Strunmah dies in that moment.
