RATED M FOR DRUGS, ALCOHOL, GRAPHIC VIOLENCE, POTETIAL SEXUAL THEMES, AND OTHER ADULT THEMES
It has been almost thirty-seven years since the end of the Serpent Wars, and the Naga have been actively dealing with the peoples of Rokugan. The two races flourish together, and the odd Naga is allowed to join one of the Great Clans, though this is still a relatively rare occurrence.
What started as only a hundred awakened Naga has turned into a thousand, and they actively rebuild most of their cities within Rokugan, allowing the Rokugani embassies and centers in each of them. Although their race is still on the decline, the rate of this decline has actually decreased as they integrate more with the humans of Rokugan.
The Pearl Champion, once the intermediary between the Naga and the humans of Rokugan, has extended to include several other nonhuman races. One of the previous Pearl Champions, Soshi Tamashi, the child of a Naga mother and human father, was granted the right to found the Salamander Clan. The Clan had the duty of being the intermediary between each of the nonhuman races, and often worked closely with each of the Pearl Champions.
As for Tamashi himself, the young courtier and shugenja spent time with several of the other races, learning their culture and their ways. He spent years with the Nezumi and the Naga, and even spent time with a small band of free Ogres. In his time with each of them, he learned much. He even managed to convince the Emperor of the time to allow a small band of free Ogres to found a village in the Colonies. He ultimately disappeared into the Burning Sands seeking the fabled Ashalan.
The Great Clans have seen peace in most of this time, and even the Crab and Spider have ceased to war among each other. The large rise in Susumu courtiers and Order of the Spider Monks, now the Michio Family, have led to a rise in uncorrupted Spider. The Crab wholly enjoy this, often attributing the rise to their constant watch over the Spider. The Spider shrug this amusing assumption off. The other Clans remain as they have for hundreds of years.
Peace does not last forever, however. The Naga contemplate their mass awakening, increasing in numbers ever year, but do not understand why it is that they awaken. They recognize the difference in the Spider and the forces of the Shadowlands as two similar but also dissimilar entities. While the Shadowlands remains a breeding ground for the Foul, the Spider use their connection for the benefit of the Empire.
The Obsidian Champion and Onyx Champion, now official positions of the Empire, seek to maintain a balance in the forces of Jigoku. Tasked with the martialing of the tainted, the Obsidian Champion also makes sure the undead and Shadowlands beast remain wholly within the Spider and not free agents. The Onyx Champion, tasked with the spread of the worship of Fu Leng and Daigotsu, is also charges with taking out errant maho users, offering them death of fealty to the Spider.
But there are whispers of a force in the Shadowlands that oppose Daigotsu and his rule, and actively seek to overthrow not only the Lord of Jigoku, but also claim the Emerald Empire as their own. If anyone even knows what is happening, they have yet to step forward. What remains is a hushed whisper of what may be stirring in that dreaded place, and what strife will soon befall the Empire.
