This is a thread for posting random facts about the world.

For example did you know that the scots have this dreadful thing called a deep-fried Mars Bar, which is basically a chocolate bar fried in batter like a fish.

The Browning M2 .50 machine gun will be celebrating its 100th birthday in a couple years, and it's still in service in the Army.

A Florida man butt-dialed 911 while discussing (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/scott-simon-fla-man-accidentally-calls-911-and-reveals-murder-plot-police-say/) murder plans. He was charged with 1st degree murder after man discussed was found shot in car after getting into an argument with murderers at a Waffle House restaurant.

A man once robbed a store during a parade so he could escape and use it as cover and put the gun down his pants stepped outside it discharged and in the pain he fell forwards onto the street and died being run over by a float. Talk about an atypical death.

Reindeer herds being raised for meat in Norway still need to be tested (http://www.rferl.org/fullinfographics/infographics/chernobyls-reindeer/27575578.html#) for radioactivity due to fallout from the Chernobyl disaster. Reindeer that are too radioactive to eat are released into the wild.

A user on Imgur claimed to have found a secret spiral staircase behind a bookshelf in his house that led down to a crevice where someone had been living in his house secretly... Stealing his food, and sleeping in his house without his knowledge.

Did you know that the "middle" finger in Britain is actually holding up the pointer and the middle fingering in the shape of a V. It's like the peace sign, but flipped.

Further did you know that the reason this became their "flip-off" symbol was during the hundred years war with the French, any captured bowman would have those two fingers chopped off. This was done as most bowmen were farmers and so by removing the fingers they were no longer able to draw the bowstring, but could still go home and work. So it became the "fuck you" to the French to show that they still had their draw fingers.

And even FURTHER, did you know that Bush Jr. while visiting England accidentally flipped off spectators when he attempted to wave the "peace" sign at the assembled people. All because he didn't learn what was inappropriate with a culture he was going to visit.

Now the question...Crazy is this true? About the symbol at least? Or did my Medieval History professor just get me to believe something completely false? XD

Did you know that thing about the archers' fingers isn't true? It is a thing a lot of historians say but not one can actually find any source that makes that claim.

Did you know just because there are no WRITTEN primary sources discussing the "Two fingered" salute. Doesn't mean that it's not true. Lots of history was passed down verbally and legends are often based in some form of truth.

Honestly I have no idea if it's true or not. The modern meaning is certainly quite vulgar so I'm not sure how well it fits. I'd also say it's pretty much fallen out of use now. During the last 20 to 30 years the one fingered version has largely replaced it.

Did you know that Berserkers were not wild and insane pagans who went into a frothing rage and just ripped and tore everything?

They were actually a member of a Jarl's retinue and fought duels for their lord and were the Viking equivalent of a Champion. There were some who were even Christian.

Did you know that, compared to many other swords, Katanas really are sub-par? Yes, they are very sharp, but they are very brittle and don't work against heavy armor.

And the folding thing was just to evenly distribute impurities because Japanese iron was of very poor quality.

Did you know, Vikings didn't really have horns on their helmets? To my knowledge, no Viking helmet has been found with horns on it like they are often seen in movies and such. No one is really sure how the horn thing started.

Did you know that the whole 'death before dishonor' and many aspects of what we popularly attribute to samurai did not exist before the peace brought on by the Tokugawa Shogunate? During the warring states period, it was common for an army to take a some losses, and then retreat from battle. It was not seen as cowardly, but pragmatic.

Did you know the Matrix films were made by two women? The Wachowski Sisters!

Griff
03-09-2016, 03:14 PM
eh--no. Technically, they both identified as male when they made the movies. So...technically, no.

Did you know that the Heathers movie was made into a great musical?

eh--no. Technically, they both identified as male when they made the movies.

Well actually we don't know that. It is quite possible that one or both self-identified as female long before.

The Matrix films are full of trans allegories and in either case they were both women back then even if it was before they realized it.

Did you know in the Star Wars EU there was a little trend of clones of characters not getting a new name but just getting an extra vowel? Such as clones Luuke Skywalker and Luuuke Skywalker(Though Luuuke was never canon).

Did you know that Ben Solo (aka Kylo Ren) was called Jacen Solo in the original Star Wars EU

I am assuming that is who they based him off of
