Equinox

Mid July, 2016.
After over a month of excavation, a secret room hidden deep beneath an Egyptian tomb is entered for the first time in several millenia. Instead of finding ancient treasures, the room contains only one thing. A single scroll of papyrus. Archaeologists find the effort made to hide the scroll perplexing, almost as perplexing as the seeming extinct language that the scroll is written in. After several people had had their hands severely burnt by just touching the scroll, the scroll was taken from the tomb, the heavy gloves used to hold the scroll badly burnt.

Early September, 2016.
The scroll is put on display in the Museum of Cairo. After it was put on display, a flux of less than desirable people began visiting the museum, solely to look at the scroll.

This story starts on September 12th, after the scroll went inexplicably missing, with no security footage of any suspect being found. A large reward is offered to anyone that knows anything about the scroll, without knowing what the scroll is for, or why so much effort was put into hiding it.
Meanwhile, across the planet, people more in tune with spiritual energy felt an abnormally large presence of evil energy, moreso than the other solstices and equinoxes of the past few centuries.
Something bad is about to happen, and the scroll is closely linked with the event.

Profiles coming soon.

(I'll just go ahead and post...)

Mercedes sat on the ground, her clothes tattered and face dirtied, black glass being where sand once was, matching the endless expanse of black water under a blood red sky. She slowly pulled the pistol from her left hip, then pointed it at the ground and fired a single round. She reached down, carefully picking up the shards of glass, then placed them into her Nalgene bottle.

Mercedes' eyes slowly opened, and after a moment she sat up. The same dream, two nights in a row. She looked to the clock on the wall, then to the blueprint storage tube on the table. She'd have to meet with Jason soon, then figure out how to translate the scroll. She got out of bed and walked across the room to the dresser. She pulled out a large button-up shirt then put it on, buttoning it up, then picked up the pack of Camel No. 9's and her lighter, then walked out to the balcony.

Mercedes pulled the tee on and looked at the vanity mirror for a moment. After deciding she looked presentable she picked up the blueprint tube and Dodge key off the dresser and left the room.

"But the current keeps bringing me back around. Seems the only place for me is underground, so tomorrow when the sun comes up, I'll be going down."
Shelby sat in a chair next to a hangar, her pink carbon and white Stratocaster sitting on her lap, her feet propped up on the Fender amp. She was wearing all white, the head of Hello Kitty on her shirt and on the front of her baseball cap. She pulled the carbon pick away from the strings and looked north and stood, seeing the plane approaching to land.

Somewhere in Cairo, an alarm went off for the fifth time that day. Jason's arm flopped towards his phone.
I've been taking care of business, it's all mine
Taking care of business and working over time.

He pulled it to his face and pressed the power button. The display lit up. 10 AM. "GROAN." He said the word groan out loud. He was trying out being more dramatic, lately. It was fun. He noticed his nail, just a little too red. Jason reached for his glasses and slid them on his nose. Better. Looked more human. He checked under his blanket for anything extra. Nope, just the usual parts. No claws or a tail. Had to be presentable for when Mercedes got here.

Shelby crouched down, looking at the angle of the boards sitting on the unloading ramp of the plane. She then walked up the loading ramp, pulling the Datsun keys from her pocket.
The car started then idled for a moment, the sound of the engine accompanied by a soft whine. There was a clunk as the car was shifted into gear, then it slowly rolled out of the back of the plane. The front end of the white 510 scraped lightly across the boards before the wheels rolled onto the boards.
The Datsun coasted down the boards, the front scraping the ground as it came off. The car then revved hard, the whine now much louder accompanied by a whistle, both almost drowned out by the engine. The car then leaned back as the tires began the spin. The car then shot forward, leaving two black lines and a thin cloud of white smoke behind it.

The Dodge slowed down and swerved to park along the curb. As it idled, it emitted the trademark sound of a classic Hemi engine. The engine was shut off then Mercedes stepped out. She placed a pair of milkshakes on the hood of the car then leaned back in, grabbing her rainbow studded gun belt. She clipped the gunbelt around her waist, the slide of the 1911 extending past her left knee, the handle hanging halfway down her hip. She then pulled the blueprint tube out of the car and slung it over her shoulder, then closed the door of the car and grabbed the milkshakes, then began walking toward the door of the building.

The museum had been closed off to the public as soon as the theft of the newly-discovered scroll had been reported. Now the exhibit area was swarming with ENP personnel surveying the scene and collecting anything that might constitute valuable evidence.

Detective Kadin Noor examined the hole cut in the display case: perfectly circular, about 40cm in diameter. Six diamond shards and a pile of what looked like white sand had been photographed, then promptly collected and labeled as evidence. They would learn more once the shards and sand were properly analyzed, but for now, how the thief had removed the scroll from its display case was clear: a hole had been cut in the glass, obviously by a professional, and the scroll was taken out from there.

Detective Noor was already going through several scenarios in his mind. By all accounts, no guards had been in the immediate area during the theft itself, and an initial review of the after-hours security footage showed that some of the cameras had been angled conveniently away from the scroll's display case. The crime scene personnel were already checking the cameras and the rest of the security system for any signs of tampering, but Noor was able to draw a few conclusions based on what they knew so far. The thief was obviously very familiar with the security measures at the museum, and sufficiently well-prepared to be able to execute a professional heist like this without any immediate trace left behind.

The diamonds and the white sand were their next two leads, and those were on their way to the lab for further analysis. In any other circumstance, all they would have to do was wait. But Noor was never good at waiting, and with such a major archaeological find, Noor knew he would need to get statements from the curator as well as those involved in the expedition. With such a well-organized, well-prepared M.O., it was not out of the question for a professional rival of the museum or an unscrupulous collector or smuggler to have the scrolls stolen - for the right price - for reasons ranging from simple greed to a deliberate attempt to damage the museum's reputation.

Walking past the ENP personnel, Noor made his way to the curator's office to begin questioning him.

Jason kicked the door of his little hotel room. It opened with a tad more force than he had meant, slamming into the wall and sticking where the doorknob penetrated the stucco.

"Oops." He looked up at the custodian, standing there mouth agape. "Things could be worse," Jason shrugged, "You could've been standing there when I kicked it." He whistled and slid down the railing. He went outside and sat on a convenient rock, waiting for Mercedes. Waiting was always the hardest part.

Mercedes was halfway to the entrance from her car when she saw Jason walk out and sit on a rock. She approached him, then extended a milkshake towards him, "Güten morgen. Sprechen sie Deutsche?"
She sat down next to Jason, pulling the pack of Camels out of her pocket with her free hand. She used her index finger to open the pack, placing it next to her mouth, pulling out a cigarette with her lips. She replaced the pack back into her pocket and pulled out a lighter, then lit the cigarette.

"Net, no ya govoryu na russkom." He took the milkshake in his hand, appreciative of the cold cow juice. "Peanut butter and bacon. What will you guys think of next?"

Mercedes then spoke in English, with a German accent, "Not a big fan of bacon unless it's on a breakfast plate. I got vanilla."
She took a drink of her milk shake, then a drag from her cigarette, "We should go somewhere else. People are gonna start getting suspicious seeing a 14 year old with a 50 cal. That's also smoking. Follow me."
Mercedes stood up and began walking toward the Demon, placing her cigarette in her mouth to retrieve the keys from her pocket.

Shelby looked out of her windows, Cairo Museum of Antiquities. Blue Skodas with light bars in front of the museum. She couldn't get in, no matter what she did. She opened the door of the Datsun, placing her right foot on the ground. She then stood slightly, stepping out of the car, or attempting to. Instead came a yell, "JESUS FICKEN CHRIST" and Shelby fell onto the ground face first. She slowly stood and brushed herself off. She sighed, closing the door of the Datsun and began across the street. She crossed the street and found a seat on one of the ledges edging the pond in front of the museum. She felt a vibration from her phone and drew it out, then looked at it, "Ordentlich, Sandshrew."
