"On the night of the 31st October, 1928, the Grand Marconi Hotel held its annual Halloween Masquerade, a lavish ball with rich guests from all over the world. At the end of the night, when the ball has nearly come to an end, only a few guests remain.

As they dance their last dance, a horrifying shriek pierces through the night.

The 98-year old Baroness Von Liechten lies sprawled across the marble floor, a deep puddle of red growing around her. The cause of death is clear; a stab through the heart. From this moment on, everyone is a suspect.

Only one question remains...

Whodunnit?"




A classic, film noire-inspired murder mystery roleplay, complete with dark twists, character deaths, and scandalous affairs.

The story will focus heavily on character development, but there is also of course the plot of the murder. For the most part, though, it's essential that you simply have fun. This story is least of all things to be taken seriously. It is not a scary horror RP.

The RP will function as follows;

• You will create a character. This character is a guest at the Halloween Masquerade, and cannot be one of the hotel employees. These are NPCs controlled by the GM (Craze).
• As soon as there is a sufficient amount of players, the GM (Craze) will send each individual player a secret related to the character, and possibly another player. This could be any number of things; your character could be the murderer, or he/she could have a love affair with another character.
• Once the RP kicks off, the GM (Craze) will have his own character as well as function as the narrator of the game. The role of the narrator is to tell things to drive the story forwards, or to describe character deaths or events in the RP. Think of it as a D&D game master.
• Every week, a character is chosen by the GM and that character will die. Death is inescapable once it has been decided, but there is always the chance your character might return...
• The game ends when either all the characters are dead, or when the murderer has been discovered.




#1: All RPA rules apply.
#2: Craze is the GM of this RP and his word is law. This goes for OOC as well as the Narrator role in the IC.
#3: Have FUN. I cannot stress this enough. Take this RP with a grain of salt.
#4: Make your character creative and colorful. I want a very diverse cast, preferably with characters that are a tad whimsical and cheesy.
#5: I will NOT tolerate anime or cartoon pictures as an appearance description. This is not only because of my personal preference, but also because I want this RP to feel like a TV show or film. Realistic images are therefore preferred.
#6: At least two paragraphs per post.
#7: Again, all players are guests at the Masquerade. No hotel employees.
#8: Obviously, all the characters wore masks at the Masquerade ball. Do whatever you want with this information.
#9: The guests are annually invited to the ball. This means that there can be no first-timers, unless you have a good reason.
#10: Only the GM can timeskip.
#11: Do not mess up the character sheet. I am very anal about my coding and I'd like for you to keep to it.
#12: Got plot ideas? Hmu boii
#13: One character each. No exceptions.
#14: Hotel employees are ALSO suspects. Even though they are NPCs, you may still suspect them.

What's a hotel without its employees? The Marconi Hotel features a colorful ensemble of servants... and each one of them could'a dun it.

Raoul Marconi is the Marconi Hotel's manager, and has been in the business for a long time.
He came up with the idea of the Halloween Masquerade and has hosted it for 15 years. Raoul is a very strict businessman, with money on his mind.

Raoul came into the position of manager through family, following directly after his father, Sal Marconi.

Jerry Marsh is the Marconi's loyal bellboy, doing what he does; opening doors, carrying luggage,
pressing the elevator button, being yelled at by Mr. Marconi...

Jerry is kindhearted and friendly, though also a bit of a sycophant - he continuously sucks up to Mr.
Marconi, and will do anything to save his own skin. The death of Baroness Von Liechten shocked him greatly.

Scottish-born Andrew Finch has been the hotel clerk for nearly 8 years, and always aware of who is staying in the hotel at which time.

He's friendly, charming and cheeky, to Marconi's annoyance, who claims he doesn't take his job seriously enough.

Gordon is the Hotel's cook, and strangely enough only goes by 'Gordon'. No surname or middle name, just 'Gordon'. Despite his vulgar language and attitude, he cooks exquisite meals and hasn't had a single complaint about the food in 20 years.

Gordon is known for hating the Halloween Masquerade. He usually secludes himself in the kitchen as much as he can.

Vera Byle has been the hotel's maid for nearly 50 years, serving even before Raoul Marconi was the head honcho. Having interacted with countless guests in the span of her lifetime, she knows many secrets and is usually fond of gossip.

Rumor has it that she and Baroness Von Liechten were chlidhood friends.

Jefferson Fillmore, nicknamed 'Filthy Jeff', lives in the hotel's basement and has been in employment since he was a boy. He's known for smoking cigars and wearing the same shirt for too long, as well as his basement which is infamous for its liquor stench.

Despite his nickname, Jeff is excellent at keeping everything clean and fixing things. He knows the hotel like the back of his hand.

He was invited to the Masquerade the very first time and has attended it ever since, functioning as the watchful eye of the law.

Age: 21, just. It was her birthday three days ago.
Country: England, the North-West.
Profession: Technically nothing serious at the moment. Teddy has recently dropped out of studying fine art at Oxford of all places.
Sexuality: Both sides of the coin agree with her truthfully. Although it's heavily rumoured she is currently seeing a gentlemen fellow.

Personality: Ted's very much what you'd call a modern young lady. She has a rather, revolutionary and often unconventional, way of thinking about things. And that's putting it lightly if we're being honest.

In truth she's a girl very much shaped and defined by her past and her upbringing. She wears her history like a badge of pride, proudly displaying it at any and all opportunities given. There's a forwardness about the girl that can (and has) put a lot of people off her. She voices her opinions and feelings in a shockingly casual manner for a girl that's more often than not placed in such high circles. And as you might expect, this practically mundane truthfulness sometimes doesn't make her the most respected or popular young Lady. But that doesn't bother Teddy, if anything she probably prefers it that way.

But she tells some absolutely cracking dirty jokes though.

For how long have you been going to the Halloween Masquerade?: "They've been forcing me to go for my birthday for the last four years now. I'd have stopped turning up ages ago in truth, but the drinks are decent, and more importantly free, so there you go.."

History: Teddy is the only grandchild of Lord Thomas Norris' illegitimate Son, Edward Norris. This single fact may as well be the only thing that's ever put on her tombstone, because good god, it's dictated about every other factor of her life up until now.

Initially such a fact didn't affect her in the least. Her Father barely recognised the fact and lived his life as a completely ordinary Northern Labourer. And such was Teddy's existence too for a time. Aware but embarrassed and unwilling to recognise any nobility she may possibly possess. It was only until a scholarship for Oxford was gained that people began to take a interest in her heritage at all. Her rather snobby course friends and chums at Uni began to drag her up and into higher social circles. They did it for an ultimately cruel reason, pure hierarchical humiliation. Of course Teddy had no idea how to behave in such places. She was a Northern girl who said things like 'brew' and 'scran'. God knows she wasn't the type of Lady who went about giggling because Penelope from down the road was wearing pink shoes instead of blue or whatever.

Likes: Dirty jokes, tea, being able to create in peace, football (Man City's her team) and bad wine (the cheaper the better).
Hates: Posh twats (specifically the ones with titles), cheese, small talk, and fish.
Fears: Being for humiliated for something other than her heritage. If her artwork were mocked for example.
Other: She fucking loves Cats.

I'm debating between either a fortune teller or other entertainer hired for the Masquerade, or perhaps a character inspired by the 1920's Tutmania craze (e.g. An archaeologist or financial backer from a recent dig in Egypt). Either way, I'm still working out how to go about each of these designs.

Personality: 'Mysterious' would be the best word to describe Madame Chernova's public persona. She seldom speaks much in public, and she speaks her predictions using very cryptic words and clues that sometimes make little to no actual sense until later. Some say this is all part of her act, while others believe this is simply because these cryptic clues are what she sees of the future. Either way, however, few can deny that this aura of mystery has helped to boost her fame and attract many prospective clients over the years.
For how long have you been going to the Halloween Masquerade?: 5 years
History: Very little of Madame Chernova's past has ever been conclusively verified. According to the woman herself, Ludmila Chernova was born in a small village near St. Petersburg (now Leningrad) and inherited 'the gift' from a very early age, as had her mother, her grandmother, and countless other women in her bloodline. Amid the rise of the Bolshevik movement and the birth of the Soviet Union, Ludmila had to keep her gift secret lest she face persecution, but then one day she accurately predicted that a local farmer would lose his crops in a fire; in retaliation, the farmer reported Ludmila to the authorities and accused her of starting the fire, forcing Ludmila to flee to America.

In America, not only was Ludmila free to use her gift publicly without fear of persecution, but she also quickly discovered that her gift could be quite profitable. She began to earn a decent living as a medium and fortune teller, becoming professionally known as Madame Chernova, but it wasn't until one especially high-profile incident six years ago that her career really began to take off, after she was credited with accurately predicting the whereabouts of a kidnapped Egyptian diplomat and thus aiding in his rescue. Madame Chernova has since become a highly controversial figure, with some hailing her as one of the greatest mediums of the decade and others calling her one of the most successful charlatans of the decade, and her growing notoriety led to her being hired to tell fortunes at the Grand Marconi Hotel's Halloween Masquerade for the last five years, where her notoriety and the supernatural charm of her profession both fit perfectly with the theme of the Masquerade.

Likes: Card games, fine foods and drinks, practicing with her gift.
Hates: Being mocked or ridiculed, stubborn skeptics, people actively trying to prevent her predictions from coming to pass.
Fears: Heavy storms (esp. thunderstorms)

For how long have you been going to the Halloween Masquerade?: For the past seven years. My boss doesn't like to attend such gatherings but I enjoy a lively crowd. So He provides the air fair ticket and sends me as ambassador while he gets to spend the week doing my job.
History: Chicago born and raised in a fairly wealthy family of four. She has always been the black sheep of the family by wearing mourning clothes most of the time and thick makeup. Her mother tried keeping her contained until she was of age but you see how that turned out. Anywho She will not conform with the new fashion disasters sprouting about like wildfire. This caught the owner of The Drifter's eye. The man had just the job for the little black lamb. Now Vivian is twenty-six years old and is enjoying life.

Likes: drinking, dancing, singing, attending social events, car rides, dark clothing, and the Wiccan faith.
Hates: Conforming to the social norm. Having bright dresses a happy disposition all the time, not being able to speak her mind since she's female.
Fears: Being caught by police and being hung for her crimes. Being labeled as the witch of Chicago which would make her a high priority target to gang leaders such as Al Capone to have on their side. Claustrophobia to a minute level.

For how long have you been going to the Halloween Masquerade?: Lance has been attending ever since he can remember. Appearances are big with his parents and being invited to this ball is everything to them.
History: Lance comes from a wealthy family, his father is in politics and his mother comes from old money. He grew up seeing a nanny more than his parents, attending posh events every weekend and forcing a smile for the camera when it was pointed at him.

His childhood was controlled by his parents selfish agenda to propel his father’s political career. It wasn't until high school he had a little more wiggle room to do what he wanted, and he wanted to do it all. High school was a wild ride and his father’s reputation was at steak so they sent their son off to military school to rid them of the risk.

He came back a “reformed” young man and went off to college at his father’s alma mater, Harvard. He’s enjoyed college, a little to much, but he doesn’t have to worry to much about his parents freaking out over his every move.

The only time he has to deal with them are on the holidays and of course the annual Halloween Masquerade. Time to slap on that fake smile and act like the perfect son…and maybe ruffle some feathers when they aren’t looking.

Likes: Alcohol, freedom, girls, cooking.
Hates: People that act like something they aren’t, being forced to do something, the smell of peanut butter.

Personality: Lukas' personality is as unique and flamboyant as his clothing. An unassuming smile is always present on his face, that is, if his mind hasn't wandered off into the distance. His students adore him for his upbeat style of teaching, gracefully moving around the classroom and keeping up an active discussion. While Lukas will engage in conversation with just about anyone, he prefers to talk on a deeper level than just casual conversation. He is also seen as a bit of a dreamer, and seems as though he is constantly on the cusp between reality and dreams.

For how long have you been going to the Halloween Masquerade?: Lukas began attending the Masquerade 6 years ago, when he turned 21. His father, a long time attendee of the Masquerade, always wanted his son to focus on his studies and contributions to the community before being exposed to more lavish events. After Lukas finished his undergraduate degree, his father began inviting him each year to attend the event with him.

History: Lukas grew up accustomed to modest living conditions in Germany. His father was a concert pianist, and his mother the daughter of a well-to-do diplomat. Despite his parents' good fortunes, they both placed heavy emphasis on Lukas being involved with the entire community, not just those of equal status. He excelled in school, both academically and socially, and entered the Gymnasium to further his academic studies and prepare him for college. After finishing school in Germany, he was accepted to the University of Cambridge, where he studied English literature and education, and then took a post teaching English at a secondary school in London.

Likes: Coffee, classical music, and peaceful landscapes.
Hates: Time frames, restrictions, and suits.
Fears: Not being able to create something new.
Other: He always dreams of owning a quaint cottage by the shore to spend holiday in, where he can read and write in peace.

For how long have you been going to the Halloween Masquerade?: 9 years.

History: Cora only just managed to jump into her acting career. With so many aspiring competitors, Cora nearly didn't get a debut 12 years ago. However, once she managed to play a few supporting characters, she was granted with larger roles, more screen time, and ultimately, more fame and money. However, she has nearly lost her opportunity many times, such as with the scandal 8 years ago. During this scandal, she had even been accused of sleeping with a director to get a better part, which was not true. Since then, she has presented a polished version of herself and has grown in popularity as an older actress in the last few years.

Likes: Wine, mystery, and a good-looking guy
Hates: Pretentiousness, forced respect towards her, and spicy food
Fears: Suffocation, bugs of any kind, and the destruction of her reputation

Quick Question :: I know the rules said not to share our secret with anyone. Does that include the IC thread, even if someone were to ask about something related to it? It's fine by me one way or the other, but I wanted to be sure what our limits are.

AH! A perfect question. Thank you for asking this, I almost forgot to mention it.

The short answer is YES, you are absolutely allowed to share your secret with anyone in the IC.

It entirely depends on whether your character would want to share it. Eventually, all of it is gonna have to surface at some point - whether through questioning or in a dire situation.

Or just when your character feels like it.

So yeah, your information may absolutely be shared in the IC and it's even encouraged!

Mind you, though, do be careful with what you share even through exposition. If your character is the murderer, and you post something along the lines of:

"Harry just came back from murdering the Baroness when he found the crowd standing around he corpse."

Then everyone OOC is going to know you did it. So, don't do dat. c:


EDIT: Oh, and another thing - don't be an asshole. If someone posts that they held a PRIVATE conversation with another player in which they described what they were doing at the time of the murder, don't go ahead and have your character MAGICALLY know about it too. Even though you know about it OOC, your character IC does not. That would be godmodding.

I see. I used to use Photobucket but now you have to pay to be able to link to images in your library, so I tried to use the RPA image feature, which says it lets you either link to an image via URL or upload the image file from your computer. I've been trying to figure out how to do the latter.
