for instance, if i were to set an RP in 1950 and decided to make a character that used the n word a lot, would it be allowed? just a precaution:|

I believe it is against the rules. I'll bold the parts you need, as I'm using the OG rules and not the newer fun ones.

2.1- Posting contents and links of pornographic, political, immoral, offensive material, or excessive violence which may breach applicable laws are forbidden, and appropriate actions will be taken against the offender. Above all, do not post any material that supports illegal or dangerous activity or depicts nudity/sexual acts. Remember, we have lots and lots of minors who read this site.

Examples: Illegal, harassing, libelous, defamatory, abusive, threatening, harmful, vulgar, obscene, profane, pornographic, racially offensive, intentionally inaccurate or otherwise objectionable material.

Here at RPA we accept people of all kinds so it's usually frowned upon to put anyone down. Even if it's not intentional. So I'm pretty sure it is, in fact, against the rules, but I'm not a mod so I will tag one of them for you. I just wanted to give you a response as soon as I could since it doesn't appear any mods are online.

Also it’s like a touchy topic, yknow? Even if it’s not banned it’s probably better for private, pm based rps.

I've moved this thread to the appropriate section.
MadHatter41; and to clarify for you all, ( Omac; Griff; ) the rules Omac has linked apply when posting Out of Character, as yourself. The same restrictions do not apply IC - for example, we do not allow discussion condoning illegal activity, however having a character in a roleplay who was a drug user, or murderer is fine.

So to answer your question, yes, In Character in the context of the rp that would be fine. I would suggest (though it is not mandatory) that if an RP is going to contain themes that might be upsetting for some people then perhaps have a trigger warning in the opening post.

IC wise, trigger warnings and mature ratings are your best friends, but also consider discussing OOC with the players and GM of the game, to make sure that it's okay and that they know it's simply your character, nothing more.
